2 Barbara Goldman Shelley Goldman KIDDUSH NOSH We would like to supplement our Kiddush Nosh with healthy alternatives for our children. We are looking for volunteers to purchase fruits and vegetables before Shabbat and to cut up fruits and vegetables on Shabbat morning. If you are interested please Simi Fogel at Q & A Update: Yeshiva University Pre-Med Internship Interns Arriving at YIEB for June 1st Shabbat The Yeshiva University (YU) & Stern College Pre- Med/Pre-Dental Interns will move into our community immediately prior to Shabbat of June 1st, for a period of 3 weeks. Please greet them & make them feel welcome in our midst. To ensure that our YIEB community understands the nature of the program, here are a few Q & A's to explain the history, structure and function of the program: Q: How did the Shul develop this program with YU? A: YU's Center for the Jewish Future (CJF) has run similar undergraduate programs in several career fields in various "out of town communities" such as Kansas City, Boston, Atlanta, South Bend IN, and Houston over the past several years. The YU programs are designed to help put these Jewish community locations "on the map" through extensive coordination & publicity throughout Yeshiva University's network. Torah study responsibilities in the community are a major component of these programs. While at a YU Leadership Conference last summer, we saw the prior success of YU's CJF Internship programs in business, manufacturing, Jewish communal work, and health fields, so as part of our overall recruitment program, YIEB approached YU's CJF with a request to create, administer & develop a new internship program for the first time ever in East Brunswick, with the YIEB community acting as the host site. YU agreed. Q: How much money did YIEB spend on this program? A: NOT A SINGLE DOLLAR of YIEB operating budget funds is being spent on this program. In keeping with the original proposal presented to the YIEB Board of Directors, the program is 100% budget-neutral to the Shul. For example, the glossy full-color brochures you've seen that describe the YU program were paid for, prepared, & printed by YU's CJF, not YIEB. Q: Other than shadowing several of YIEB's health professionals in office & hospital, what do the Interns do with all their "free time" in EB? A: The Interns will have VERY LITTLE "free time" in EB. Each Intern is devoted to working on behalf of the Shul membership to enrich our Torah learning environment PART 2 of the Interns' day begins at 6PM when they return each day to YIEB for a continued role in our Shul. Each weeknight, they have assignments. For example, Monday nights they are preparing material & learning in Chevruta with Adults (Men & Women) at YIEB; Tuesday nights, they are learning with the High School Teens of YIEB; Wednesday nights, they will be attending medical career-related seminars which are open to the entire Shul; one Thursday night we anticipate they will tech/learn in Chevruta at YIEB with Rutgers Jewish Experience students, as well as YIEB college students; on Shabbat they will deliver Divrei Torah and Shabbat Afternoon Shiurim (some for Women, some for Men & Women) and work with the YIEB Shabbat Youth Program; and they will be part of daily Minyan and give Divrei Halacha in Shul each day. So as you can see, this program is as much about enhancing our community's Torah learning as it is about understanding the field of Medicine. Q: How were the interns selected? A: There were approximately 40 applications received by YU for the program from YU & Stern students. An application consisted of an essay and personal information demonstrating 1) excellent academic credentials, as well as 2) strong interest in pursuing a career in the health field and 3) demonstrated prior experience & dedication in learning and working with various demographic groups within Jewish communities to facilitate their teaching responsibilities at YIEB. A personal interview was conducted at CJF offices on 2 occasions by YU-CJF's Rabbi Elie Mischel, Rabbi Weinstein and Judy Goldrich, for each completed application. Final selections were made based primarily on the 3 criteria above. Most of the 40 candidates presented excellent applications. Q: How will the Interns be hosted in our community? A: Several YIEB families are graciously housing the students & providing their meals. Q: Are the Interns compensated for their work in our community? A: No, the Interns are unpaid volunteers in our Shul. They also do not receive any college credit for the medical shadowing or Torahlearning components of their group experience. Should you have any other questions not addressed in this Q&A, please feel free to contact Judy Goldrich or Rabbi Weinstein for more information. Thank you & we look forward to a wonderful upcoming partnership experience. PRIMARY ELECTION JUNE 4th Voter Registration Deadline: May 14th. If you don t vote, we won t be heard. On April 15, 1947 Jackie Robinson broke baseball s color barrier forcing Brooklyn Dodger fans to examine their views on racism. In this class we examine racism in a Jewish context with emphasis on the theme that man was created in the Image of God. We argue that demonstrating God s image in our fellow man sanctifies the name of God. For sources yaakovweinstein@juno.com YIEB & Highland Park Community Kollel. RSVP to Rosanne Koenigson at JEWISH FEDERATION OF GREATER MIDDLESEX COUNTY Honors 13 Past Presidents, CBS News Anchor and National Correspondent Jim Axelrod to Emcee Event SOUTH RIVER, NJ On Thursday evening, June 6th, the Jewish Federation of Greater Middlesex County will honor its 13 past presidents for their leadership and commitment to ensuring the vitality of Middlesex County. The celebration will take place at The Heldrich Hotel and George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick. Past Presidents to be honored and the years they served are: the late Alvin Rockoff ( ), Larry Zicklin ( ), James Stahl ( ), Susan Mandell ( ), Ron Grayzel ( ), Marlene Herman ( ), Roy Tanzman ( ), Kenneth A. Gordon ( ), Phoebe Wofchuck ( ), L Richard Wolff ( ), Philip S. Cantor ( ), Lee Livingston ( ) and Arlene Frumkin ( ). For the first time in our history, we will be honoring all of the past presidents of the Jewish Federation of Greater Middlesex County at one major event. It is so meaningful to recognize those who led in the creation of our vibrant Jewish community, said Federation president Seth S. Gross. "We invite the community to join us in showing support for the honorees who are so deeply deserving, and for the humanitarian work of the Jewish Federation. CBS News Anchor and National Correspondent Jim Axelrod, a Middlesex County native, will serve as the evening s master of ceremonies. We are delighted to have Jim join us for this wonderful evening, said Don Sulam, a member of the Past Presidents planning committee. He grew up in Highland Park and is keenly aware of the important work done by the Jewish Federation here in Middlesex County, in Israel, and around the world. "We are creating a tribute journal for honorees and guests, which will include ads and congratulatory letters that have been pouring in from friends of the Jewish Federation, said Federation executive director Gerrie Bamira, noting an additional fund-raising aspect of the upcoming Past Presidents Celebration. The journal will remain a timeless testament to those who blazed the trail for the Jewish community we now strive to support and sustain. Leadership is a responsibility first. When caring people accept responsibility for helping to identify what needs to be done and are part of the getting it done, the honor associated with leadership is well deserved, said Gross, citing the Jewish community's collective responsibility to be role models to inspire subsequent generations. Recognizing Federation's past presidents shows the admiration and respect we have for those who led before us, and helps us recommit ourselves to the selfless work they began on our behalf. Funds raised at this event will support the programs and services of the Jewish Federation, which enhance education, social services, community needs and emergency responses to strengthen our local community. Tickets for the Past Presidents Celebration are$150 per person. To purchase tickets or place an ad in the celebration journal, contact the Jewish Federation of Greater Middlesex County at or visit JewishMiddlesex.org.
