Deuteronomy Hand Out Short.doc page 1 of 13 Introduction Moses laid out details in Leviticus, relating more of the why in Deut. In case you missed it.and they did. Deut [29:1] These are the words of the The Most Quoted Book by the rest of the Bible. And the book quoted by Jesus when tempted in the Wilderness. Matt 4 [2] If You are the Son of God, command that these. Deut 8[2] understand that man. Matt 4:6 If You are the Son of God,. Deut 6:[16] You shall not put the LORD your God to the test, as you tested Him at Massah. Bible Knowledge Commentary: Moses envisioned another sin to which the Israelites might be tempted in the new land, that of testing the LORD ( 6:16 ). This implies that at times the people would face hardship as they did at Massah (cf. Ex 17:1-7 ) where they lacked water and thought they would die of thirst. Rather than trusting God in this trial they tested Him by complaining and quarreling. Matt 4[8] I will give You, if You fall down and * worship me. Deuteronomy ( 6:13 and 10:20 ), God has a specific piece of land in mind, and has the authority to designate the nations boundaries: Deut 2[5] Deut 2 [9] Then the LORD said to me, Do not harass Moab. because I have given Ar to the sons of as a possession Deut 2 [19] I will not give you any of the land of the sons of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to the sons of as a possession. Deut 29 [4] Yet to this day the LORD has not given you a to, nor to, nor to. [5]. in order that you might know that.. [9] So keep the words of this covenant to do them, that you may prosper in all that you do. [14] Now not with you alone am I making and this oath, Love of God 1 st occurs in Deut! Occurrences of Love and God together in one verse 1 st John and Deut. Deut 4[37] * Because He your fathers, therefore He chose their descendants after them. Deut 7[7] The LORD did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any of the peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples, [8] but because the and kept the oath which He swore to your forefathers

Deuteronomy Hand Out Short.doc page 2 of 13 Deut 10 [14] Behold, to the LORD your God belong heaven and the * highest heavens, the earth and all that is in it. [15] Yet on your fathers did the LORD set His affection We ve seen the heart of Israel not having ears to hear, but God loved them. In the same way: Romans 5 [8] But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. How does a God of Love conduct war on the inhabitants of the land? Deut 9[4] Do not say in your heart when the LORD your God has driven them out before [ you, Because of my righteousness the LORD has brought me in to possess this land, but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD is dispossessing them before you. See Also Gen 15:12-16, Deut 12:29-31 Deut 18:10 Love for God What are the Two Greatest Commandments? Matt 22[36] Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law? [37] And He said to him, YOU SHALL LOVE WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND. [38] This is the great and * foremost commandment. [39] The second is like it, YOU SHALL LOVE AS YOURSELF. [40] On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets. Occurrences of Love and God together in one verse included Love For God Dt 6:5 You shall love the LORD your God... Dt 11:13 to love the LORD your God... Dt 13:3 if you love the LORD your God... Dt 30:6 God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your * descendants, to love the LORD your God Why are the 2 greatest commandments appropriate? God is the initiator Because He Loved You Deut10[12] Now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require from you, but to * the LORD your God, to in all His ways and Him, and to the LORD your God with all your and with all your, [13] and to the LORD'S commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today for your good? [14] Behold, to the LORD your God belong heaven and the * highest heavens, the earth and all that is in it. [15] Yet on your fathers did the LORD set His affection to love them, and He chose their * descendants after them, even you above all peoples, as it is this day. TWOT Strength: muchness, force, abundance Mind: to focus on and think over, understanding, intellect, intellectual faculty, thought, What does He require? See Also Micah 6:8 Law of Christ John 14 [21] He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him. Love Your Neighbor Interesting that this command does not explicitly appear in Deuteronomy, a book that talks much about Love and God!! Leviticus 19[18] You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the LORD.

Deuteronomy Hand Out Short.doc page 4 of 13 The second note from Henry was to look at Moses Example. He left palace of Pharaoh to invest in his people. He turned down God s offer to start a whole nation from his offspring. He kept leading his people dispite several rebellions and 40 years in the wilderness. Love for man is how you show your love for God. Although Love Your Neighbor does not occur explicitly in Deut, many of the laws are about their relationship to people; treating the rich, the poor, and the alien with justice, dealing with false accusation. Others address your responsibility toward people and the value of human life; multiple witnesses, ox goring, penalty for kidnapping, murder and cities of refuge for manslayers. It is interesting to note how often the laws of our land are similar to the provisions in O.T. law. Deut 24 [16] Fathers shall not be put to [ for their sons, nor shall sons be put to [ for their fathers; everyone shall be put to for his own sin. Not following this could become an ugly thing among men, choosing favorites etc. Yet what Love God shows when Christ is put to death for our sin. Love is by God Deut 10 [17] For the LORD your God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God who does not show partiality nor take a bribe. [18] He executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the alien by giving him food and clothing. [19] So show your love for the alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt. 1 John 4[10] In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. [11] Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. In the NT it is we are no longer aliens Eph 2:19 and are to show hospitality to strangers, 1Tim 5:10 and Heb 13:2. In Titus 3:2 Consideration for all men 1Cor 14:24 Unbelievers may attend our meetings, as aliens attended some of the Feasts of Israel. Love for one another is to be obvious to all. John 13[34] A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. [35] By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another. See also 1 John 2:7,8 and 2 John 5 Remember and Teach your Sons Deut 6 [6] These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. [7] You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. [8] You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as * frontals [ on your forehead. Deut 6 [20] When your son asks you in time to come, saying, What do the testimonies and the statutes and the judgments mean which the LORD our God commanded you? Deut 6 [24] So the LORD commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God for our good always and for our survival, as it is today. [25] It will be righteousness for us if we * are careful to observe all this commandment before the LORD our God, just as He commanded us. Righteousness??

Deuteronomy Hand Out Short.doc page 5 of 13 Theological Workbook of the OT This root basically connotes conformity to an ethical or moral standard. It is claimed by the original significance of the root to have been to be. In the context of Deuteronomy observing the law is how you show the that comes by, when you love the Lord. But if you do not love the Lord attempting to observe the law should only remind you how you are. Through the Law comes the knowledge of sin, Rom 3:20. And the Law is our tutor to lead us to Christ. Gal 3:24, Deut 4: [9] but make them known to your sons and your grandsons. Deut 11 [19] Deut[11:1] your sons... [7] your own eyes have seen all the great work of the LORD which He did. Deut 12[28] Be careful to listen to all these words which I command you, so that it may be well with you and your sons after you forever, for you will be doing what is good and right in the sight of the LORD your God. Judges 2[7] The people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who [ survived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of the LORD which He had done for Israel. [10] All that generation also were gathered to their fathers; and there arose another generation after them, nor yet the which He had done for Israel. The result for Israel is different, (promise of living in the land,) but we also need to instruct our children Eph [4] Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Feasts for Rememberance Deut[16:1] celebrate the Passover to the LORD your God so that you may remember all the days of your life the day when you came out of the land of Egypt. Do you remember the day of your salvation? Not instructed to remember the day your mother bore you, nor the first day of our salvation But the word remember is used frequently in the NT, and specifically in regard to our salvation: Ephesians 2 [8] For by grace you have been saved through faith; Eph 2[11] Therefore that formerly you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by the so-called Circumcision, which is performed in the flesh by human hands [12] that you were at that time separate from Christ, [ excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. [13] But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off [ have been brought near [ by the blood of Christ. And we are to remember Him, the source of our salvation and our deliverer. 1Cor 11 Deut 16[10] Then you shall * celebrate the Feast of Weeks to the LORD your God with a tribute of a freewill offering of your hand, which you shall give just as the LORD your God blesses you; [13] You shall * celebrate the Feast of Booths

Deuteronomy Hand Out Short.doc page 6 of 13 [16] Three times in a year all your males shall appear before the LORD your God in the place which He chooses, at the Feast of Unleavened Bread and at the Feast of Weeks and at the Feast of Booths, and they shall not appear before the LORD empty-handed. [17] Every man [ shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD your God which He has given you. giving as each is able.. 2 Cor 8[12] For if the readiness is present, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have. [13] For this is not for the ease of others and for your affliction, but by way of equality [14] at this present time your abundance being a supply for their need, so that their abundance also may become a supply for your need, that there may be equality; [15] as it is written, HE WHO gathered MUCH DID NOT HAVE TOO MUCH, AND HE WHO gathered LITTLE HAD NO LACK. In the place 9x Deut 16[2] You shall sacrifice the Passover to the LORD your God from the flock and the herd, where the LORD chooses to establish His name. John 4 [20] Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. [21] Jesus *said to her, Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. [22] You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. [23] But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. [24] God is * spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. Separated Ownership The word Possess* is used 59 times in Deut, 3x His Own Possession Deut 14[2] For you are a holy people to the LORD your God, and the LORD has chosen you to be a for out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. Also 4:20, 7:6 Distinction Deut 4[7] For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as is the LORD our God whenever we call on Him? [8] Or what great nation is there that has statutes and judgments as righteous as this whole law which I am setting before you today? Also 4[9] Detachment Deut 20 [16] Only in the cities of these peoples that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, you shall not leave alive anything that breathes.. [18] so that they may not teach you to do according to all their detestable things which they have done for their gods, so that you would sin against the LORD your God. See Also Deut 18[9]

Deuteronomy Hand Out Short.doc page 7 of 13 Ownership for Proclamation 1 Peter 2[9] But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God's, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; [10] for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD; you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY. Ownership for Godliness Titus 2: [11] For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, [12] instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, [13] looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of * our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, [14] who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. The Ten Commandments # Command in Deut You shall have no other gods [ before Me. 2 [8] You shall not make for yourself * an idol 3 [11] You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain 4 [12] Observe the sabbath day to keep it holy, 5 [16] Honor your father and your mother, 6 [17] You shall not murder. 7 [18] You shall not commit adultery. 8 [19] You shall not steal 9 [20] You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor 10 [21] You shall not covet How do you decide what to bring from the OT to our lives in the church age? Most of the 10 are repeated in the N.T. but what about the other laws? Let the NT instruct you on application of the OT. The more I looked at Deut the more I recognized correlations the NT explained. 1 Cor ch 8, 9 and 10 are instructive 1 Cor 8 [4] Therefore concerning the eating of things sacrificed to idols.., 1 Cor 8[7] However not all men have this knowledge; but some, being accustomed to the idol until now, eat food as if it were sacrificed to an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled. [8] But food will not * commend us to God; we are neither [ the worse if we do not eat, nor [ the better if we do eat. [9] But take care that this [ liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. Some people will choose to apply specific laws from the O.T. in their own lives, and for the sake of not violating their conscience we limit our freedom when around them. Some people will practice old testament laws because it creates a visual image that reminds them of life principals, but do not have the expectation that others must follow those same rules.

Deuteronomy Hand Out Short.doc page 8 of 13 1 Cor 9[9] For it is written in the Law of Moses, YOU SHALL NOT MUZZLE THE OX WHILE HE IS THRESHING. God is not concerned about oxen, is He? [10] Or is He speaking altogether for our sake? [13] Do you not know that those who perform sacred services eat the food of the temple, and those who attend regularly to the altar have their share [ from the altar? [14] So also the Lord directed those who proclaim the gospel to get their living from the gospel. How would you know the Rock was Christ? 1Cor[10:1] For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea; [2] and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; [3] and all ate the same spiritual food; [4] and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was * Christ. [5] Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased; for they were laid low in the wilderness. [6] Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved. [7] Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, THE PEOPLE SAT DOWN TO EAT AND DRINK, AND STOOD UP TO PLAY. [8] Nor let us act immorally, as some of them * did, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day. [9] Nor let us try the Lord, as some of them * did, and were destroyed by the serpents. [10] Nor grumble, as some of them * did, and were destroyed by the destroyer. [11] Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. Probably a reference to Deut 6[16] You shall not put the LORD your God to the test, as you tested Him at Massah. Exod17 [3] But the people thirsted there for water; and * they grumbled against Moses and said, Why, now, have you brought us up from Egypt, to kill [ us and * our children and * our livestock with thirst? [7] He named the place [ Massah and * Meribah because of the quarrel of the sons of Israel, and because they tested the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not? Num14[36] As for the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land and who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing out a bad report concerning the land, [37] even those men who brought out the very bad report of the land died by a plague before the LORD. Gal 4. [9] But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how is it that you turn back again to the weak and worthless [ elemental things, to which you desire to be enslaved all over again? [10] You observe days and months and seasons and years. [11] I fear for you, that perhaps I have labored [ over you in vain. Romans 14[5] One person * regards one day above another, another regards every day alike. Each person must be fully convinced in his own mind. [6] He who observes the day, observes it for the Lord, and he who eats, [ does so for the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who eats not, for the Lord he does not eat, and gives thanks to God. Col 2[16] Therefore no one is to * act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath [ day [17] things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the * substance [ belongs to Christ. Col 2 [20] If you have died with Christ [ to the elementary principles of the world, why, as if you were living in the world, do you submit yourself to decrees, such as, [21] Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch! [22] (which all refer to things destined to perish [ with use) in accordance with the commandments and teachings of men? [23] These are matters which have, to be sure, the * appearance of wisdom in * self-made religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body, but are of no value against fleshly indulgence. Note the parallel to Christ s comments, regarding eating certain foods, restricted in the law: Mark 7 [14] After He called the crowd to Him again, He began saying to them, Listen to Me, all of you, and understand: [15] there is nothing outside the man which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man. [16] * * If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear. ]

Deuteronomy Hand Out Short.doc page 9 of 13 Mark 7[17] When he had left the crowd and entered the house, His disciples questioned Him about the parable. [18] And He *said to them, Are you so lacking in understanding also? Do you not understand that whatever goes into the man from outside cannot defile him, [19] because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and * is eliminated? ( Thus He declared all foods clean.) Some Laws were amplified by Christ. Deut 5 [17] You shall not murder, [18] You shall not commit adultery. See Matt 5:21-27 Murder=You Fool, and Adultery = Lust, It is very easy to be mislead into thinking we are more spiritual by doing specific practices, often rooted in the O.T. law. Words like deluded, captive, deception and defrauding describe ways to fall into this thinking. Col 2[4] I say this so that no one will delude you with persuasive argument. Col 2[8] See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, [ rather than according to Christ. Col 2[18] Let no one keep * defrauding you of your prize Illustration of walking in the footsteps left in the snow. As I walked to work for the second day following the last snowfall I noticed how difficult it was to place my feet exactly into the footsteps made the previous day. One had to focus exactly on the next place to set your foot. But later in the week when the snow was gone I could look at the radio tower 2 miles away and set a course to arrive at the same destination, but with much greater freedom on where to place my feet. Hebrews [12:1] Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, [2] fixing our eyes on Jesus, the * author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. [3] For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary [ and lose heart. Children need specific instruction at a young age but as they grow we need to be helping them consider obedience as conforming to the nature of God and that is driving our specific instructions. As we mature in Christ we are not adding more rules to live by, but seeing more clearly who He is, and by His power living as He would, His priorities, His way of loving God and loving others. Col 3 [3:1] Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. [2] Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. [3] For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Other Examples/Issues I have with things being added to our list of rules to live by: Deut 4:2 Not add or remove from Word ie Rev 22:18-19 Matt 15 Not honor Father and Mother for doctrine of men. Pharisees added to the Word. How about this one? Deut 7: [25] The graven images of their gods you are to burn with fire; you shall not covet the silver or the gold that is on them, nor take it for yourselves, or you will be snared by it, for it is an abomination to the LORD your God. [26] You shall not bring an abomination into your house, and like it come under the ban; you shall utterly detest it and you shall utterly abhor it, for it is something banned.

Deuteronomy Hand Out Short.doc page 10 of 13 Maybe the NT example is 1 Cor 15:33 bad company corrupts good morals???? Deut 22[5] A woman shall not wear man's clothing, nor shall a man put on a woman's clothing; for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD your God. Deut 22 [11] You shall not wear a material mixed of wool and linen together. Deut 22 [12] You shall make yourself tassels on the four corners of your garment with which you cover yourself. (Well why not apply this one too??) Deut 12[22] Just as a gazelle or a deer is eaten, so you will eat it; the unclean and the clean alike may eat of it. [23] Only be sure not to eat the blood, for the blood is the * life, and you shall not eat the * life with the flesh. OK to eat meat but not the blood continuing our recognition of Blood Theme. But was does NT say? Don t eat blood because of unnecessarily offending the Jews, Acts 15:21. Land Covenant Possession based on Obedience The words occur 10 times in this book, Palestine has its origins in the name Philistines (who were of European decent, not Arab) still occupying the South West part of Israel in King David s time. In the time of Christ the area was referred to as Judea, Samaria and Galilee. And the New Testament twice identifies it as the land of Israel. There was a great destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 AD, and after another Jewish revolt in 135 AD the Roman emperor desecrated any remaining holy sites and renamed Israel and Judea to Palestine as propaganda to remove any legitimacy of the Jewish Nation. A propaganda which lives on today. Deut 5[32] So you shall observe to do just as the LORD your God has commanded you; you shall not turn aside to the right or to the left. [33] You shall walk in all the way which the LORD your God has commanded you, that you may live and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you will possess. The Land Covenant is a further clarification of God s Promise of Land Seed and Blessing to Abraham in Genesis 12 The title to the land is theirs, but is based on obedience. Deut [6:1] [3] O Israel, you should listen and * be careful to do it, that it may be well with you and that you may multiply greatly, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey. Deut [28:1] Now it shall be, if you diligently [ obey the LORD your God, being careful to do all His commandments which I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. [2] All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you * obey the LORD your God: [3] Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the * country. [4] Blessed shall be the * offspring of your * body and the * produce of your ground and the * offspring of your beasts, the increase of your herd and the young of your flock. [5] Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. [6] Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.

Deuteronomy Hand Out Short.doc page 11 of 13 [7] The LORD shall cause your enemies who rise up against you to be * defeated before you; they will come out against you one way and will flee before you seven ways. [8] The LORD will command the blessing upon you in your barns and in all that you put your hand to, and He will bless you in the land which the LORD your God gives you. [9] The LORD will establish you as a holy people to Himself, as He swore to you, if you keep the commandments of the LORD your God and walk in His ways. [10] So all the peoples of the earth will see that * you are called by the name of the LORD, and they will be afraid of you. [11] The LORD will make you abound in prosperity, in the * offspring of your * body and in the * offspring of your beast and in the * produce of your ground, in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give you. [12] The LORD will open for you His good storehouse, the heavens, to give rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hand; and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. [13] The LORD will make you the head and not the tail, and you only will be above, and you will not be underneath, if you listen to the commandments of the LORD your God, which I charge you today, to * observe them carefully, [14] and do not turn aside from any of the words which I command you today, to the right or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them. Deut 28[15] But it shall come about, if you do not * obey the LORD your God, to observe to do all His commandments and His statutes with which I charge you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you: [16] Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the * country. [17] Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. [18] Cursed shall be the * offspring of your * body and the * produce of your ground, the increase of your herd and the young of your flock. [19] Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out. [20] The LORD will send upon you curses, confusion, and rebuke, in all [ you undertake to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, on account of the evil of your deeds, because you have forsaken Me. [21] The LORD will make the pestilence cling to you until He has consumed you from the land where you are entering to possess it. [22] The LORD will smite you with consumption and with fever and with inflammation and with fiery heat and with * the sword and with blight and with mildew, and they will pursue you until you perish. [23] * The heaven which is over your head shall be bronze, and the earth which is under you, iron. [24] The LORD will make the rain of your land powder and dust; from heaven it shall come down on you until you are destroyed. [25] The LORD shall cause you to be * defeated before your enemies; you will go out one way against them, but you will flee seven ways before them, and you will be an example of terror to all the kingdoms of the earth. [26] Your carcasses will be food to all birds of the sky and to the beasts of the earth, and there will be no one to frighten them away. [27] The LORD will smite you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors and with the scab and with the itch, from which you cannot be healed. [28] The LORD will smite you with madness and with blindness and with bewilderment of heart; [29] and you will * grope at noon, as the blind man gropes in darkness, and you will not prosper in your ways; but you shall only be oppressed and robbed continually, with none to save you. [30] You shall betroth a wife, but another man will violate her; you shall build a house, but you will not live in it; you shall plant a vineyard, but you will not * use its fruit. [31] Your ox shall be slaughtered before your eyes, but you will not eat of it; your donkey shall be torn away from you, and will not be restored to you; your sheep shall be given to your enemies, and you will have none to save you. [32] Your sons and your daughters shall be given to another people, while your eyes look on and yearn for them continually; but there will be nothing [ you can do. [33] A people whom you do not know shall eat up the produce of your ground and all your labors, and you will never be anything but oppressed and crushed continually. [34] You shall be driven mad by the sight of * what you see. [35] The LORD will strike you on the knees and legs with sore boils, from which you cannot be healed, from the sole of your foot to the crown of your head. [36] The LORD will bring you and your king, whom you set over you, to a nation which neither you nor your

Deuteronomy Hand Out Short.doc page 12 of 13 fathers have known, and there you shall serve other gods, wood and stone. [37] You shall become a horror, a proverb, and a taunt among all the people where the LORD drives you. [38] You shall bring out much seed to the field but you will gather in little, for the locust will consume it. [39] You shall plant and cultivate vineyards, but you will neither drink of the wine nor gather the grapes, for the worm will devour them. [40] You shall have olive trees throughout your territory but you will not anoint yourself with the oil, for your olives will drop off. [41] You shall * have sons and daughters but they will not be yours, for they will go into captivity. [42] The cricket shall possess all your trees and the produce of your ground. [43] The alien who is among you shall rise above you higher and higher, but you will go down lower and lower. [44] He shall lend to you, but you will not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you will be the tail. [45] So all these curses shall come on you and pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed, because you would not * obey the LORD your God by keeping His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you. [46] They shall become a sign and a wonder on you and your * descendants forever. [47] Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joy and a glad heart, for the abundance of all things; [48] therefore you shall serve your enemies whom the LORD will send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in the lack of all things; and He will put an iron yoke on your neck until He has destroyed you. Deut 29[22] Now the generation to come, your sons who rise up after you and the foreigner who comes from a distant land, when they see the plagues of the land and the diseases with which the LORD has * afflicted it, will say, [23] All its land is brimstone and salt, a burning waste, * unsown and unproductive, and no grass grows in it, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in His anger and in His wrath. [24] All the nations will say, Why has the LORD done thus to this land? Why this great [ outburst of anger? [25] Then men will say, Because they forsook the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt. [26] They went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods whom they have not known and whom He had not * allotted to them. [27] Therefore, the anger of the LORD burned against that land, to bring upon it every curse which is written in this book; [28] and the LORD uprooted them from their land in anger and in fury and in great wrath, and cast them into another land, as it is this day. [29] The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law Interesting thought from the Emmaus class on Abraham. One of the secret things may be God s choosing whom He wills. Deut 32[44] Then Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people, he, with * Joshua the son of Nun. [45] When Moses had finished speaking all these words to all Israel, [46] he said to them, Take to your heart all the words with which I am warning you today, which you shall command your sons to observe [ carefully, even all the words of this law. [47] For it is not an idle word for you; indeed it is your life. And by this word you will prolong your days in the land, [ which you are about to cross the Jordan to * possess. Deut 30[19] I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your * descendants, [20] by loving the LORD your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him; for * this is your life and the length of your days, [ that you may live in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them. Be really careful about applying this to us in the Church age. Both Old and New Testament offer intimacy in our relationship to God based on faith that is followed by obedience.

Deuteronomy Hand Out Short.doc page 13 of 13 The New Testament does not offer us the physical blessings promised to Israel, and many have fallen by the delusion of the prosperity gospel Isaiah 55, John 14:21, 2 Peter 1 Future Things: Immediate Deut 31[7] Moses Epitaph Deut 32[51], Deut 34[1]-[12] 1st Coming of Christ Deut 18[15] 2 nd coming of Christ, the True Latter Days Deut 30[:1] See Also Deut 4[25] Summary: Key concept is Possession based on.
