Romans 12:1-2 & 21 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Rainbow Forest Mission Statement Connecting the Disconnected to Christ, Community and the Call Our Purpose To glorify God in everything we say and do 2

Connecting Through the Word God s Desire and Design for Our Success Deuteronomy 8 11 Revelation 2:1-5 1 To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: The words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands. 2 I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. 3 I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name s sake, and you have not grown weary. 4 But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. 3

Deuteronomy 8: The whole commandment that I command you today you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land that the LORD swore to give to your fathers. 2 And you shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not. 3 And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. 4 Your clothing did not wear out on you and your foot did not swell these forty years. 5 Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the LORD your God disciplines you. 4

6 So you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God by walking in his ways and by fearing him. 7 For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing out in the valleys and hills, 8 a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey, 9 a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper. 10 And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land he has given you. 11 Take care lest you forget the LORD your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes, which I command you today, 12 lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them, 13 and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, 5

15 who led you through the great and terrifying wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water, who brought you water out of the flinty rock, 16 who fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end. 17 Beware lest you say in your heart, My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth. 18 You shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day. 19 And if you forget the LORD your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish. 20 Like the nations that the LORD makes to perish before you, so shall you perish, because you would not obey the voice of the LORD your God. 6

Children In The Wilderness (Deut. 8:1-5) The three essentials for Israel's conquest and enjoyment of the Promised Land were: Listening to God's Word Remembering God s Word Obeying God s Word Several times in these chapters Moses commands us to remember (Deut. 8:2, 18; 9:7, 27) 2 And you shall remember the whole way 18 You shall remember the LORD your God 9:7 Remember and do not forget how you provoked the LORD your God to wrath in the wilderness. 7

Four more times Moses admonishes us to forget not! (Deut. 8:11, 14, 19; 9:7) 11 Take care lest you forget the LORD your God 14 then your heart be lifted up, and you forget 19 And if you forget the LORD your God and go 9:7 Remember and do not forget how you 2 Peter 1:12-15 Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder, since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things. 8

2 Peter 3:1-2 This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles, Moses pointed out Four Ministries God performed for Israel and that He performs for us today as He seeks to mature us and prepare us for what He has planned for us. God Tests Us (vv. 1-2) And you shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not. 9

God knows what's in the hearts of His children, but His children don't always know or want to know. Revelation 2:23 "And all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and the hearts" Jeremiah 17:9 "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" The devil tempts us to bring out the worst in us, but God tests us to bring out the best in us. 10

God Teaches Us (v. 3) And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. Those who obeyed God in the daily responsibility of gathering manna would be inclined to obey the rest of His commandments. Our relationship to the Word of God (manna) indicates our relationship to the God of the Word. God Cares For Us Deuteronomy 8:4 Your clothing did not wear out on you and your foot did not swell these forty years. Deuteronomy 29:5 I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandals have not worn off your feet. Not only did God feed the Jews "miracle bread" each morning, but He also kept their clothes from wearing out and their feet from swelling. 11

Matthew 6:25-34 The three pressing questions of life for most people are What shall we eat? What shall we drink? What shall we wear?" And the Lord met all these needs for His people for forty years. 1 Peter 5:7 "Casting all your care upon Him; for He cares for you" Matthew 6:32 "For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things" God Disciplines Us Deuteronomy 8:5 Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the LORD your God disciplines you. God saw the Children of Israel as His own children whom He greatly loved. "Israel is my son, even my firstborn Discipline is an evidence of God's love and of our membership in God's family (Heb. 12:5-8; Prov. 3:11-12) 12

God Desires that We Enjoy His Blessings Deuteronomy 8:6-9 6 So you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God by walking in his ways and by fearing him. All of this typifies for believers today the spiritual wealth we have in Christ: the riches of His grace (Eph. 1:7; 2:7), the riches of His glory (1:18; 3:16), the riches of His mercy (2:4) and "the unsearchable riches of Christ" (3:8). We are complete in Christ (Col. 2:10) in whom all fullness dwells (1:19), and therefore we have everything we shall ever need for living a full Christian life to the glory of God. God has a wonderful life planned for each of His children (Eph. 2:10) and He provides all we need to fulfill that plan. 13

The Danger of Forgetting God's Goodness Deuteronomy 8:10-18 Deuteronomy 8:10 And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land he has given you. Moses spelled out the dangers involved in forgetting that God is the source of every blessing that we enjoy. If we forget God, then success has a way of making us proud (v. 14), heart be lifted up and you forget what we were before the Lord called us. Deuteronomy 8: You shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day. 19 And if you forget the LORD your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish. 20 Like the nations that the LORD makes to perish before you, so shall you perish, because you would not obey the voice of the LORD your God. 14

When We Forget We Begin Rejecting God's Authority Deuteronomy 8: And if you forget the LORD your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish. 20 Like the nations that the LORD makes to perish before you, so shall you perish, because you would not obey the voice of the LORD your God. Romans 1:21 "Because, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful" Three Steps Toward Ruin Prosperity Ingratitude Idolatry 15

Moses Reviews Their History and Reminds Them That They Rebelled Against The Lord Deut. 9:1-10:11 For the fifth time in his address, Moses says, "Hear, O Israel!" (See 4:1; 5:1; 6:3-4.) He was giving them the Word of God, and when God's speaks to His people, they must listen. The word "hear" is used over fifty times in Deuteronomy, for God's people live by faith, and "faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Rom. 10:17). Moses Reminds Them of God s Grace Deuteronomy9:1-6 Deuteronomy 9:6 Know, therefore, that the LORD your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stubborn people. 16

Moses Reminds Them of The Discipline Of God Deuteronomy 9:7-10:11 Deuteronomy 9:7 Remember and do not forget how you provoked the LORD your God to wrath in the wilderness. From the day you came out of the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against the LORD. Moses tells them of the three times he went up on mountain to fast and pray 40 days. (Deuteronomy 9:9, 18, 25) Moses Conclusion of His First Message Deuteronomy 10:12-11:32 Obey Because Of God's Commandments Deuteronomy 10:12-13 And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments and statutes of the LORD, which I am commanding you today for your good? 17

Obey Because Of God's Character Deuteronomy 10:14-22 Deuteronomy 10:17-18 For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is not partial and takes no bribe. He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing. Obey Because Of God's Care Deuteronomy 10:21-11:7 Deuteronomy 10:21 He is your praise. He is your God, who has done for you these great and terrifying things that your eyes have seen. 18

Obey Because Of God's Covenant Promises Deuteronomy 11:8-25 Deuteronomy 11:8-9 You shall therefore keep the whole commandment that I command you today, that you may be strong, and go in and take possession of the land that you are going over to possess, and that you may live long in the land that the LORD swore to your fathers to give to them and to their offspring, a land flowing with milk and honey. Obey Because Of God's Chastening Deuteronomy 11:26-32 Deuteronomy 11:26-28 See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you today, and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside from the way that I am commanding you today, to go after other gods that you have not known. 19

Their future victories depended on their present decision, the determination in their hearts to love the Lord and obey His Word. Revelation 2:4-5 But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. Remember, Repent, Return, Repeat 20
