3 Strangers are frequently mentioned with orphans and widows in the Old Testament:

4 Deuteronomy 10:18 He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing.

5 Psalm 94:2, 6 Rise up, O judge of the earth; repay to the proud what they deserve! They kill the widow and the sojourner, and murder the fatherless;

6 Jeremiah 7:6 If you do not oppress the sojourner, the fatherless, or the widow, or shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not go after other gods to your own harm, then I will let you dwell in this place, in the land that I gave of old to your fathers forever.

9 Exodus 22:21 You shall not wrong a sojourner or oppress him, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

22 Exodus 23:12 Big Idea- Sabbath rest applied to the stranger among them.

23 Lev. 17:8; 22:18 & Num. 15:14-16 Big Idea- Strangers/foreigners permitted to practice sacrifice

24 Leviticus 19:10, 23:22 Big Idea- Some of each harvest was to be left for the poor and stranger.

25 Lev. 19:33-37 (cf. Dt. 1:16) Big Idea- Strangers/foreigners were to be treated with honesty, fairness and justice.

31 Deuteronomy 1:16 Big Idea- Judges were to give fair trials to strangers.

32 Deuteronomy 10:17-22 For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is not partial and takes no bribe. He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing. Love the sojourner, therefore, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt. You shall fear the Lord your God. You shall serve him and hold fast to him, and by his name you shall swear. He is your praise. He is your God, who has done for you these great and terrifying things that your eyes have seen. Your fathers went down to Egypt seventy persons, and now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars of heaven.

33 Deuteronomy 14:29 Big Idea- The poor and strangers were to be cared for by the tithe of the nation.

34 Deuteronomy 24:14-22 Big Idea- The stranger was to be treated fairly and given provision in the land.

35 Deuteronomy 26:1-19 Big Idea- Every third year, a tithe was commanded for the Levite, stranger, fatherless, and widow that they may eat in thy gates and be filled.

36 In summary, the stranger was to be: 1. Treated fairly 2. Shown justice 3. Given provision 4. A participant in Sabbath rest, sacrifice and worship 5. Loved as the native born (Lev. 19:33, Dt. 10:19)
