3 Brief Note from The Secretary General We have now come to the end of our operating year which gives me an opportunity to thank every member of our Ummah, both local and international, for the support and encouragement and prayers for our work. It would not have been possible for us to showcase our work without your financial sacrifice. May Allah s.w.t. reward you all adequately for your concern for the welfare of our Community. My brief report also highlights some of the many challenges we face. The enclosed report, an illustrative format, makes it easy for the reader to appreciate the extensive scope of our efforts to meet some of the needs of our people. But, as per our Constitution, our main emphasis and focus remains on education. We are happy to report that this year has been a milestone in the field of education for Ummah. (a) We saw the inauguration of the first fully fledged Muslim University known as Umma University at Kajiado. (b) This year, Ummah Foundation crossed a magical number of a total of 1500 students - poor and deserving - who received financial support from Ummah Foundation at different levels of their education - primary, secondary, tertiary and university. (c) We have also seen this year the emergent of several Muslimintegrated schools. We are equally happy to report that this year we have observed that Ummah has made considerable progress in economic, social and public affairs. This is despite the fact that we are still a very much neglected and marginalized community whose basic human rights are regularly trampled, violated and harassed under the guise of fighting terrorism. Despite these impediments we have managed to procure substantial representation both in the Central and County governments. Like all other communities, Ummah will begin to reap significant benefits once the system of devolved government becomes fully operational. UMMAH FOUNDATION We need, however, to be seriously mindful that we are facing the following main challenges: (1) The community continues to disregard and fully appreciate the importance and significance of good education; we currently remain at the bottom of the ladder in terms of our representation at the universities - currently 3% compared to our population estimated at 20%. (2) We are not receiving adequate financial support from members of our community in order to fulfil our ambition and obligation that no Muslim - deserving child should be denied an opportunity to achieve his or her educational ambition. (3) Each member of our Ummah is not accepting its personal responsibility to make some contribution, no matter how small, to uplift our Ummah. (4) Our critical challenge that can never be over-emphasized is the NEED FOR UNITY amongst ourselves. In sha Allah, we shall receive continued and more generous help from both local and international Ummah so that in the next few years we can attain our rightful place in all walks of life of the Nation. Finally, I personally want to express my sincere gratitude to our Trustees and Executives for their commitment, dedication and encouragement. It has really been a united team effort!! Zool Nimji Secretary-General Ummah Foundation ANNUAL ACTIVITIES

10 iv) Ummah Foundation and IAT Scholarship Program 2 - The Ummah Think Tank The purpose of the Ummah Think Tank is to advocate for best values, to influence policies in the Muslim Community, to develop best practices through mutual exchange of ideas and in-depth analysis and concrete recommendations for policymakers. In 2011, the Ummah Think Tank commissioned a research that was undertaken by a lead researcher and his assistants. The research was geared towards assessing the potential of the established high schools in Kenya by the Muslim community irrespective of the mode of establishment towards achieving its maximum potential of admitting more students through secondary schools and thereby posting more qualified students in universities. On average the research found out that we are potentially not utilising fully our resources in meeting the over-all objective of attaining high performances. There was also great need that the research should be documented into a published Brother Fauz Qureishi, the CEO Ummah Foundation (centre) signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Instutute of Advanved Technology (IAT) Representative Fred Mutisya (right). Looking is Brother Musa Wekesa, the Executive Officer of Ummah Foundation. 12 4 - Prison Rehabilitation Program Rehabilitation is one of the ways in which positive changes can be effected in prisons. Ummah Foundation through its Prison Rehabilitation Program has been in the forefront in bringing positive change in prisons through Islamic teaching and other counselling programs. In Naivasha maximum prison, Ummah Foundation established some years back an Educational Centre that also serves as a mosque for the inmates. The Centre also has a facility for an audio - visual program where religious and educational materials are viewed daily. In Kamiti Maximum Prison, Ummah Foundation has again constructed another centre that is similar to the one in Naivasha. With the same setup and programs we have rehabilitated many through Daawah. More concerted efforts are in place to make sure the inmates receive maximum attention in terms of their spiritual growth and moral upgrading. The Mosque is now a land mark that is the centre of attraction for many inmates and visitors alike. In Kwale prison, Ummah Foundation has built another Education Centre that serves the needs of the Muslim inmates there. Our target is to reform all the inmates through spiritual guidance and excellent moral adoption mechanisms. Our Prison Maalims have the vital role to play in making this a reality. Ummah Foundation has also recently completed the construction of an Educational Centre and Mosque at Manyani Camp Prison which will serve nearly 400 inmates.
