OUR VISION A movement of conscious Muslim youth striving for a just and sustainable world OUR MISSION To inspire and enable young British Muslims to take positive action for social and environmental justice Registered Charity No: Printed on paper from a sustainable source
Message from CEO and Chair Welcome to MADE s review of 2016/2017 God will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves. [Qur an, 13:11] This verse from the Qur an continues to provide the motivation for the work of MADE: inspiring and enabling young British Muslims to take part in social action. This year, MADE s commitment to young people was profiled by the national youth social campaign #iwill. #iwill has shown that when young people engage in social action volunteering, fundraising and campaigning this strengthens their character as well as local communities. This annual review sets out the work of MADE in 2016/7: training and workshops for schools, raising awareness about the Islamic perspective on the environment and supporting schools with practical actions training for students, providing specific tools for youth-led campaigning social action, supporting young people with volunteering campaigns other environmental initiatives, including political engagement. MADE s work is possible only with the support of our many partners and supporters. Thank you for investing in a positive future for these young people. CEO Lucy Bushill-Matthews / Monowara Gani Chair Sarah Javaid
Training and workshops In Schools This year, MADE s education programme in schools has emphasised the environment. MADE has worked with schools, madrassahs and youth groups across the UK. MADE links up Islamic principles with current environmental issues through assemblies, practical workshops, teacher training and visits. Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! I loved it! Pupil, experiencing sustainability module Working with MADE has impacted and advanced the children s learning across all areas of the curriculum due to the positive impact on their motivation and ability to make deep connections between different elements of learning. 4 Teacher, Ebrahim Academy, London
Training and workshops In Schools Highlights Over 2,200 Muslim children took part in assemblies and workshops in Almost 10,000 pupils taken part to date 98% of young people we worked with learnt something new from the topics they had learnt about through our resources and sessions. Over 80% of young people we worked with felt inspired by what they had learnt to make a personal change in their life. 5
Training and workshops For older students MADE has developed an innovative Changemakers Course, in partnership with Ebrahim College. The course covers the Islamic principles behind campaigning, current campaigns, and practical skills of leadership and campaigning. MADE has delivered tailored courses to three different groups: University Islamic Societies Trainee scholars General public It has really motivated me to be a more active member in the society and take some positive action Saniya, on the General Public course. It has given me an opportunity to see how I can put my big dreams to change the world into action and has taught me how to break down what seems like an overwhelming task into something feasible. 6 Zenab, Manchester Islamic Society Course
Changemaker Course Highlights This year, the changemaker tailored course has been delivered to 44 trainee scholars, 21 members of the General Public, and 81 Islamic Society Students in Manchester and in the Midlands. 909 people have received campaigns training to date. 73% say it has inspired them to make relevant changes to their own lifestyle 79% say it has increased skills to a large or very large extent 81% say it has increased their motivation to take action to a large or very large extent 7 The course for Trainee scholars and the General Public is supplemented with a detailed handbook.
Social Action Volunteering MADE has pledged to the national social action campaign #iwill to increase volunteering for young British Muslims. For the Climate Coalition Show the Love for the environment campaign, MADE organised for tree-planting at Heartwood Forest with Muslim, Jewish and Christian pupils from different schools, and hedge-planting at Willowbrook Farm with people from Muslim and Jewish organisations. MADE is now a signatory of the Charter for Trees at the Woodland Trust. If a Muslim plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, or a person or an animal eats from it, it is regarded as a charitable gift for him. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) It s wonderful to see such pioneering community-based inter-faith work led by MADE. Rushanara Ali, MP This event was a perfect example of young people from different faiths all standing together to show the love for trees in the most meaningful way possible by planting for the future. Their future. Matt Larsen-Daw, Woodland Trust I enjoyed planting trees today because it felt good to give back to the environment because they give so much to us. 8 Georgia, Yavneh College
Social Action Volunteering MADE partnered with the Better Communities Business Network (BCBN) and Keep Britain Tidy, to enable young British Muslims to take part in an annual Sadaqa Day. Youth groups, madrasahs and schools participated in social action by litter picking, with the view to improve the young people s teamwork and confidence whilst teaching people about the virtues of sadaqah (charity). MADE provided participating pupils from schools across the UK with #LitterHeroes t-shirts, litter picks and branded rubbish bags. Highlights 397 pupils took part with MADE from 10 different schools and youth organisations. 100% of participating groups said it increased pupil s enthusiasm for volunteering I enjoyed cleaning the church especially because we park our cars there for Friday prayer Pupil, Woking I loved it, when are we doing it again? 9 Pupil, Blackburn
Social Action Campaigns Every Garment Has A Name 10 MADE s Every Garment Has A Name campaign was built around the verse in the Qur an: God loves those who are fair and just [49.9]. The Rana Plaza in Bangladesh collapsed in 2013 killing over 1,100 garment workers and reigniting the debate around worker safety issues and the human cost of fast fashion. MADE s campaign encouraged Muslims to be more conscious of where their clothes come from and to challenge unethical practices in the fashion industry. The Prophet Muhammad s relationship with his clothing was one that truly embodied the Islamic values of justice, moderation, dignity and integrity. It is narrated when the Prophet put on a new garment, he would in happiness mention the garment s name. Highlights The campaign had 30 active volunteers participating and attending mobilisation meetings at the MADE office MADE s video had over 56,800 views via Facebook, 15,000 views via YouTube and 159 shares. A Film Screening event around the campaign brought in 55 people from the community with at least 20% from those of other and no faith. The result of the campaign was an increased awareness amongst people about the fast fashion industry
Environment MADE s environment programmes are targeted at different groups: Schools: workshops Community: workshops and talks. MADE has run workshops at Friends of the Earth s Basecamp and Living Islam; MADE spoke along with other panel members including the CEO of Friends of the Earth at Women and Environmental Network event. Political engagement: MADE enabled pupils to talk with MPs about the environment at a Greener UK event at the Houses of Parliament, partnering with the Climate Coalition. As a founder member of Muslim Climate Action (MCA), MADE took part in Muslim Climate Action s inter-faith fast and launch of carbon heroes. MADE and other MCA members met with MP Rushanara Ali in the Week of Climate Action. 11 MADE took part in the Government youth roundtable on emissions reduction.
Events and Challenges Tour de Salah MADE held the third Tour de Salah in partnership with Ibn Battuta Expeditions. Participants cycled 100km across London, stopping to pray each of their five daily prayers at a mosque along the route. The event highlighted practically how we can reduce our impact on the environment while raising valuable funds for MADE and other charities. Tour de Salah saw 52 participants take part and 8,200 was raised for MADE. 12
Volunteers None of MADE s work would be possible without volunteers. MADE Volunteer, Zakariya Nur, won Volunteer of the Year at Muslim Charities Forum 2017 Awards, sponsored by Your Online Conversation. After attending MADE events, Zakariya began proactively going to Mosques and getting them involved with local mainstream environmental initiatives such as setting up garden spaces. 13
