1 آوآن نيوز Kokan News T H E N E W S L E T T E R O F T H E K O K A N I D I A S P O R A C O M M U N I T Y Volume 2, Issue 4 October December 2010 Editor: Dr. Siraj Mohammed Bijle Foreword RAMADAN, the month in which the Qur an was sent down as a guide to mankind and as clear (signs) for guidance and to differentiate between right and wrong, is again with us, calling upon us, yet again, to reflect on our lives and judge ourselves to what extent we have lived, and live, by the Divine Guidance. True, we observe fast and attend night prayers. But do we, in the 11 interposing months, remember that while the fasting is for a fixed number of days ; the spirit of self-discipline and the sense of mission that it is meant to instill in us are for the whole lifetime? And are we looking forward to this Ramadan as a new opportunity to recommit ourselves to a meaningful life, or as another yearly opportunity to relapse into a month of zombie days and gastronomic nights while deluding ourselves that we are being pious? The Qur an is quite specific about what fasting is. It is neither to punish the body with thirst and hunger nor to indulge it with fat and sloth. O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may have Taqwa. Authentic commentators have translated the comprehensive word Taqwa as self-restraint in its widest sense of guarding one s tongue, hand and heart from evil and, hence, as righteousness, piety and good conduct. Fasting and special prayers are an important part of Ramadan, defined as they are as our obligations to our Creator and Sustainer. Equally important are the duties He has placed on us as obligations to our fellow men and other living beings that share this planet with us and to the planet itself the environment, water, air, vegetation and other bounties of nature. Ramadan is the time when we must rededicate ourselves to one of the basic principles of Islam Render unto each his due : To the One God His due worship to Him alone, and to his creations their due their rights. 3 آوآن نيوز Kokan News Fasting in Islam Ramadan is the month of blessing from Allah. The observance of Ramadan has been an integral part of the Muslim society, an aspect of Islam that both challenges and uplifts Muslims. The rich endure fasting no more easily than the poor. The old and the young are the same. The denial of the body s demands during Ramadan also enables observers to concentrate more thought and consideration on the less fortunate, especially those around the world who experience hunger on a daily basis, as well as on the spiritual aspects of human life that transcend the needs of the body. Ramadan creates a tremendous sense of togetherness. Let us turn to our Creator Allah and say a prayer Our Lord, we have heard Your message and command. We believe in it and we are ready to obey You all the time. Please grant us Your blessing and forgive us. Help us to follow the right way and be with us for ever and ever. The test is: Have we been becoming, with every passing Ramadan, more conscious of our obligations to render these dues? Living in a society we acquire obligations as parents or children, wives or husbands, neighbors or colleagues, employers or employees, rulers or ruled, compatriots or aliens, superiors or subordinates. Beginning a verse with It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces toward east or west, the Qur an defines righteousness as, among others,... to spend your sustenance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask and for the freedom of slaves and closes it with (and) fulfill the contracts which ye have made... Such are the people of truth, the God-fearing. An honest look at the Ramadans behind us will tell most of us that, the worst of our failures in Ramadan, in every Ramadan, is our failure to fulfill the contracts we have made specifically or by assumption as citizens, public officials, employers, employed, or ordinary men and women. From dawn to dusk we sleep and from dusk to dawn we eat, and have time for nothing else even to make the salary we receive lawful (halal), by earning it. This lethargy was not the Ramadan that the Prophet knew. For him and his companions, it was a month of action, of fulfilling obligations to their Lord and to their fellow creations. It cannot be anything less for us, if we hope to be the people of truth, the God-fearing. May Allah help us Aameen Dr. Siraj Mohammed Bijle Help the needy students of Kokan Region by becoming member and adopt EASE program of Kokan Committee Riyadh (KCR) kcr042009@gmail.com

5 Volume 2, Issue 4 October December 2010 القرا ن الكريم Qur an The word Qur an means recital, derived originally from the Arabic word meaning to read. Many names have been designated to the Qur an, each bearing a certain connotation, among which are: Al- Furqan (the distinguisher or separator between righteousness and evil), Kalam Allah (the Word of God), Al-Kitab (the Book), Al-Nur (the Light), Al-Huda (the Guidance) and Al-Dhikr (the Remembrance or the Utterance). The Qur an is considered the eternal miracle of Islam, the expounder and elucidator of the sublime truth; it should not be handled without performing the ritual ablution beforehand. It includes the perfection of all moral codes and the best guide for human happiness; it has a style most munificent, concise, persuasive, possessing great force of expression in describing the majesty and sublimity of God and encouraging seekers of truth. The Qur an comprises one hundred and fourteen Suras different in length from just a few to hundreds of verses; in all there are 6214 verses, exclusive of the opening phrase of each Sura, In the name of God, the New Publication on Our heritage Most Benignant, the Merciful. To facilitate its recitation and study by heart, the Qur an is divided into thirty books. For Muslims, the authenticity of the Qur an as the word of God is beyond any doubt. It urges man to look around him, into God s creation and into himself; there he will perceive how creation is perfected in a total harmony. Modern commentators now understand that the Qur an contains numerous allusions to modern scientific knowledge, beginning with the smallest details of creation of the universe and human life, to other scientific fields.
