Principal s Corner Dear Parents and Community Members, Indiana Horizon Academy 2ND QUARTER Assalam Aalikum WA Rahmatu Allah WA Baraktuh, VOLUME 1, ISSUE 2 With the blessing of Allah SWT, we started third quarter of the year with much colder weather and snow. I am sure all IHA students are enjoying snow. This semester we have many assessments scheduled to begin at the end of January with WIDA (for eligible ESL students) followed by the second round of MAP for KG to 3rd students in February. Our Third graders will have their state I-Learn and I-Read testing in March and April. Please make sure all students are getting enough sleep and eat breakfast at home. We will send the exact dates as they get closer. I would like to thank all of the parents who help our fundraisers event. We have different fundraising projects (box tops, dining nights are different restaurants, catalogue purchase and bake sales every other Friday). We will be starting a new script card fundraiser (gifts cards at different retail stores that can be ordered a head of time. The school will get a percentage of the card sales. Alhamdulillah our after school clubs are up and running and we looking forward to new clubs as soon as the Lego and Spanish clubs are over. We encourage parents to volunteer and help with organizing afterschool programs. We are looking for new IHA parents got talent! Reading is the foundation of success. The first word in the Quran that was revealed to Prophet Muhammad PBUH is Iqraa (Read). We work hard to instill the love of reading in our children at a young age. Please encourage your child (ren) to read every night in both languages (English and Arabic). The more you read the more things you know. The more that your learn the more places you ll go. InshAllah we are planning an Islamic/Arabic book fair in March to bring you more educational material to have at home and share with your children. 6 Page 6 Ms. Wafaa s Kindergarten Classroom Twirling, whirling, round we go! November, December, and January here we go! Kindergarteners continued to learn to read and write, as they are becoming more mature and responsible citizens not only in our classroom but also in our school community. We continued to work on three values: responsibility, respect, and safety while working on improving their Stamina. They also focused on their decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills. They worked on becoming word detectives. They are learning how to use different strategies in decoding including looking for visual and structural cues when reading new words. We are all sledding into good books and our favorites are: Pete the Cat: I love my White shoes, Pete the Cat: Rocking in my School shoes, Pete the Cat and his groovy buttons by Eric Litwin. Remember that Readers are leaders!! We also honored Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, an African civil right movement leader who helped protect the rights of all Americans. I can t believe it that we will celebrate our one hundred day soon! A note from the teacher s desk: Homework: Please make sure that your child finishes his/her work on timely matter. Please make sure homework packets are returned on the due date. Please help us by emptying, signing, and returning messages in a timely order. Reading: Please make sure you read the weekly news letters and complete at home activities with your child as well make sure that your child read, and record the book that comes with them every night. These books have to be returned daily to school. Furthermore, please continue to read and study with your child their sight words as well listen to them as they read. We are trying to improve decoding, fluency as well boost their confidence. So proud that many started AR, Accelerated Reader program where children read books and get tested in them. Please make sure your child read his/ her book 3 times before taking a test. Our goal is to read a book and get tested at least once a week. Our goal is 2 points each month minimum. Math: Students are learning that math is part of their daily life. They are learning about time, money facts measurement, recording data using different graphs, and addition / subtraction facts using base ten frames. We are also exploring geometry and attributes, flat and 3- dimensional shapes- sphere, cylinder, rectangular prism and their attributes. Please continue working with your children on memorizing their personal information including birthdays, phone number and address. Also, please provide different opportunities for your child to count and practice writing their numbers.as well counting from any given number by 2s, 5s, and 10s. Book-It calendars are due the last day of each month. March will mark the end of the Pizza Hut Book it program. Students who read and turned in their monthly reading calendars for all six months will have a party and will get All Readers medals.
7 Page 7 Ms. Sherry s 1st Grade Classroom I can t believe another nine weeks has come and gone! First grade is moving right along! The students are learning a lot and growing every day. So far this year in reading we have focused mainly on identifying details and main ideas in what we read. The second semester starts bringing in a lot of new skills and it moves really fast! We will start working on sequence, cause and effect, problem and solution, author s purpose, and theme to name a few. Also, another big difference with second semester is that I will no longer read the reading tests. Up until now, I have read the reading test and questions out loud. Now, the students will need to read and answer the questions on their own. I have been preparing the students for this and they know it is coming. In math we have covered many skills including place value, adding and subtraction, and money. Second semester also starts getting more difficult in math. We will be working on time, measurement, fractions, 2-digit addition and subtraction, and geometry. Please continue to work with your students at home by making sure they are doing their nightly reading and math homework. Ms. Pam s 2nd Grade Classroom Wow! Can you believe half of the school year is over? Time is just flying by. We are working hard in 2nd grade. We are doing a research project on the culture and customs of INDIA! We are very fortunate to have a student with an Indian background and she was able to bring in Items for us to see. Our culture day and food tasting will be on Jan. 23rd. We will be celebrating the 100th day of school on Jan.22nd and we are planning lots of fun activities. We are finishing up our Math unit in Geometry. We will be starting multiplication and division. Our spelling words and reading stories are getting tougher. We continue to work daily on comprehension. Please make sure everyone is reading for at least 20 minutes or more each night. Soon we will be taking round 2 of Indiana state tests. Reminder: Report Cards are available to view online. Let me know if you have any questions on logging on. Students should be able to access their accounts for our educational websites at home. We have abc mouse, education.com, and reading a-z. Please try to limit their use of video games during the school week and replace it with educational programs. Also, it is important to make sure kids are getting enough sleep 9-10 hrs. a night is recommended. We look forward to Spring and warmer weather and the start of our expansion project. Our fund raising dinner will be in April date to be determined. Thank you for being so supportive!
8 Page 8 Ms. Jane s 3rd Grade Classroom This quarter we will continue to move full speed ahead. We are working on building our reading fluency and comprehension. We will be concentrating on reading more outside the classroom. We are learning new and exciting math in our classroom, including fractions, decimals, and even geometry! As required by the state of Indiana, in third grade, we will be taking the I-Read state test in March, and the state I-Learn test begins in April. I wanted to say thank you to everyone who sent in food for our food drive this past November. We were able to donate several large boxes of food to the Northwest Indiana Food Bank. Our student council is working on ways to come up with a paper recycling program next. We hope to have our plan in place soon!! Student Council Food Drive
