1 A note to webpage materials: As this project has become larger, its contents now reflect a blended text. As more materials and photos become available, the nature of the materials will be updated from the original uploaded materials. From Akkaraju Sarma, MD., Huntingdon Valley, Pa akkaraju1@verizon.net The mission in presenting this web page based materials are to let our extended families know a bit of each other. In this achievement oriented society, we lose track of who your relatives are and on our many visits to India, we were chagrined to find that one family member does not know anything about his/her cousins, brothers/sisters and not visited them in a long time. We hope that will improve. The internet and social media sites are improving the picture and more needs to be done. In our immediate family, the prolific writings of some remained little know, beyond the immediate families. The need for developing family lineages is important. Thus, in this phase, the works of my late father, Dr.Akkaraju Venkata Subrahmanya Sarma is presented here. The lineage history developed by Sri.Dhurjati Subbarao is presented to you. This is a fundamental piece of excellent scholarship. While it is a beginning, work needs expansion(s) with all your inputs. In organizing the original lineage materials, there were many flow charts in the original text needed additional work (i.e. clarifications and sorting out into family trees). I could find no additional time and it can be done from India end as well. At this time, it is difficult for me to do this. I need all your help. In the written document, many of photographs and lineage charts are now inserted. Undoubtedly some more need to be added and needs updating. We have been residents in USA since middle 1965 and over the years did our social services in modest ways. A few of our efforts are included for your review and I invite others that have contributed to these causes to send materials that we can include in the web page. The download texts on the web page. 4 Introductory note by Dhurjati Subbarao, PhD. To Dhurjati Text. An idea inspires, motivates and drives a person to act. During my 50 years career in education, I had been exposed to, (while in College, University stage, Research stages) to subjects like history, geography, philosophy, psychology, sociology, anthropology, religion, and mythology. The study of roots of a society or community fascinated me. The idea to study the origin or roots of the Dhurjati family began about 3 years ago, when I visited Punuguntapalem Village, the birthplace of my father Sri. Dhurjati Narayana Rao. This village is located 25 kilometers (16 miles) from Gudur, 5 Kilometers from the Bay of Bengal. The sandy dunes (Isaka Dibbalu in Telugu), Mango and Cashew groves, the stream that runs across the village attracted me. The Dhurjatis in the early part of 20 th Century (1910 to 1950s) used to walk from Gudur to Punuguntapalem or take a but to Gudur or Muthukur, walk and cross Buckingham canal, take a boat to reach Gummala Dibba, Varagali to reach Punuguntapalem. Also the linkage of Dhurjatis to Dhurjati Kavi of Kalahasthi (of Emperor Krishna Devaraya times) fascinated me. As I progressed with my work, noted was some Dhurjati families relocated to Kalathoor from Kalahasthi. And a bit later from Kalathoor, one lineage moved to Punuguntapalem 200 years back. Later, the close relatives of Dhurjatis, through matri-lateral cross cousin marriages (Adapaduchulu in Telugu language, of Dhurjati lineage) brought in the lineages of Akkaraju, Amancherla, Sarvepalli, Chittamuri, Dittakavi and others. So information was gathered with the help of former Karanam and a cousin of mine, namely D. Srinivasa Rao of Punuguntapalem. With the help of another cousin, D. Prabhakara Rao, retired official of State Bank of India, Hyderabad, lineage charts were prepared for each of the main and well known families of Dhurjatis (at various locations), I hope this project will inspire others to undertake similar studies and map out their family histories, which will go in a long way, to understand their roots and about their ancestors. (Poorveekulu in Telugu) I invite all suggestions from family, friends and well-wishers. I will try to incorporate these in the next edition. I want to thank all that helped me with the project. 5 Foreword to Dr.Subbarao s book by Amrutavakkula Seshakumar, PhD.. Prof. Dhurjati Subba Rao has requested me to write this foreword. He has dealt with the glimpses of Kavi Dhurjati and his descendants. The fragrances of the Kavi Dhurjati poetry have given happiness. To the readers of this work and it is Dr.Subbarao s gratitude as offered to the forefathers, i.e. the pitrurunam (the debt of fore fathers). This is the real offering to a Tarpana by which the writer gets Tarana from the mortal body and gets to the celestial place near Lord Siva. Dhurjati Kavi is a well-known poet in Andhra that handed us great writings. In Telugu, from the reign of Sri Krishnadevaraya, who was besides being an emperor and also an eminent poet. There are so many works devoted to Sri Kalahastiswara Swami. Now too, many Telugus from all nook and corners only are repeating hundred poetry pieces of Dhurjati as Kalahastiswara Satakam. Readers will recall of Kannappa, in the exceptional devotion to Lord Siva who was offered threads, diamonds, water, also raw flesh a small spider, a serpent and an elephant. Dhurjati Kavi is not only a literary giant but his legacy is dedicated to literature and theistic outlook. Now Dr. Subba Rao wanted to extend his gratitude to his precedent, Dhurjati Kavi, Dr. Subba Rao took really great efforts to draw out the eminent and excellent stalwarts of the Dhurjati lineage in this work. He is an accomplished scholar in the fields of History, Sociology, Religion and Mythology. Dr. Subba Rao writings not only deal about the Dhurjatis but also other lineages like Akkaraju, Amancherla, Chittamuri Kamaraju, Revuris Sarvepalli, and Valluri,. It is really a monumental task to gather information on so many families and their origins. Because of this, the materials presented are filled not only with the fragrances of Dhurjatis, other flowers releasing many sweet fragrances in the Dhurjati gardens with other lineages The story of Dhurjaties written by Prof. D. Subba Rao is dedicated to the Lord Sri Kalahasteeswara swami and Gnana Prasunamba Ammavaru, the supreme mother. 6 With Gratitude a note from Dhurjati Subbarao, PhD. As a humble servant of God, as human being interested in the welfare of all, let me extend my gratitude to all the persons who helped me to collect data, meet the concerned persons, young and old, friends and relatives. They gave their time and energy to tell about the historical facts and events connected with Dhurjati Kavi, his brother Madhavudu and his successors right from Sri Krishnadevaraya times to modern period 2005 covering nearly 4-5 centuries. A lot of changes have taken place, migration of families from Sri Kalahasthi to Kalathoor (both in Chittore Dist.) then to Punuguntapalem (25 Kilometers from Gudur), another section moving to Gopannapalem in Nellore District 9 Kilometers from Kavali (Divisional Head Quarters). During the last years, people of Dhurjati origin mainly Poets and Writers, went to places like Nuzividu in Krishna District, Venakatagiri in Nellore District where Rajas, Zamindars encouraged scholars, poets by giving titles and also Inams. These Inams helped them to take care of their daily needs, so that they can devote time to create literature. The founder of Dhurjati family, after his work in Sri Krishnadevaraya Asthanam reached Sri Kalahasthi and devoted major part of his time to Lord Siva. He composed his monumental work Sri Kalahasthi Mahathyam. The book contains the great leelalu of Lord Siva. He assuming several forms like Jangam Devara before he bestowed His divine grace, gave boons and allowed the devotes to merge in Himself. The story of Tinnadu who offered his eyes to Lord Eswara with blood stained eyes is a wellknown story of a sacrifice. During my school and college days, teachers used to call me Dhurjati. While working in Andhra University ( ) Prof. S.V. Joga Rao, Head of the Telugu Department, later Principal, College of Arts, Commerce and Law called me by my full name and asked me to tell others my full name, when being introduced to dignitaries and others like Sri Bezawada Gopala Reddy (ex-chief Ministry of A.P), who visited Andhra University. After getting my children settled in life with the help of my wife Girija Devi (who left me alone on 6 th January, 2002), I turned my attention to social work and spiritual activities. When I went to Punuguntapalem, my father s birthplace, I was overwhelmed by a strong desire that I should trace my family history back to the great Dhurjati Kavi. The book written by Dr. (Smt.) Kanthalakshmi, Dhurjati Kavula Sahithya Seva helped me a lot. (See References). My cousin D. Srenivasa Rao (my father s elder brother s son) gave a lot of information on Dhurjati families, who were staying for the last 250 years in Punuguntapalem, then migrated to other places like Gudur, Nellore, Madras, and other places.. When I went to Sri Kalahasthi, with the help of a local friends met the Principal of Govt. Sanskrit College, retired and staying with his son at Tirupati. He gave lot information about Dhurjatis who were staying in Kalahasthi. One family of D.L. Narasimham moved to Delhi along with his mother. Four months back along with another cousin D. Rajeswar Rao of Naiduper, I went to Kalathoor Village, saw the temple of Sri Prasanna Venkateswara Swami, which was constructed by Dhurjatis 300 years back. Six months back, another cousin D. Prabhakara Rao, Retired. Official, SBI Hyderabad had helped me to prepare tables, giving decimal notations. Another cousin and my former student Dr. D.C. Madhusudhana Rao, Guntur gave a lot of information. Mr. Rajeswar Rao who is operating a printing press at Naidupeta helped me to meet B. Viswanath of Aruna Graphics, Rayaji Street, Nellore., AP that helped with printing of this book. I am also thankful to Smt. A. Mrinalini (W/o my brother-in-law Dr. A.V. Ramamurthy of Hyderabad) for giving lot information about the family history of Akkarajus, Kamarajus, Dittakavis and others related to us. I am equally thankful to A. Satchidananda Rao, Secretary Retd. LIC employees association, Hyderabad in helping me to get data about all my relations on my mother s (Smt. Annapurnamma) side about her parents, brothers, sisters and families.

7 At this stage in my life I should express my heart felt gratitude to Ekkirala Krishnamacharyulu (EK), founder of World Teachers Trust at VIZAG. I used to call him as elder brother (Annayya), who recommended to me to study Psychology (1954) after that, to pursue Philosophy instead of Economics in First I obtained a MA in Psychology in 1957, a MA Philosophy in 1962 both from Banaras Hindu University. That changed the course of my life. This happened when EK was lecturer in Telugu in Hindu College. Guntur. He also motivated us to study theosophical books specially Secret Doctrine and other books by renowned Madam Blavatsky who is one of the founders of Theosophical Society in Adyar, Chennai. Later, I studied books on Sociology, Mythology and epics like Ramayana, Mahabharatham written by Sri C. Rajagopalachari, published by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Books on Sri Rama Krishna Paramahamsa, Vivekananda, and teachings of Sri Adi Saibaba, Sri Satya Saibaba of Puttaparthi created interest. In 1998, I had an occasion to visit Puttaparthi along with my wife. So the influence of great persons and great books changed my outlook on life and to render service to mankind (Sarveyjana Sukhino Bhawanthu). Last but not the least, I thank my children for allowing me to visit different locations, to spend time with knowledgeable persons collecting information. I also thank my friends and well-wishers in Korba for the help and kind thoughts expressed by them. May Almighty (Bhagawan) shower his blessings on them, friends, family and relatives. A lot of work was involved in collecting data from various sources, analysis, and writing. In this task have included brief accounts on related families of Akkaraju, Amancherla, Revuri, Dittakavi, Kamaraju, Revuris and others. I hope after this publication and publicity given in mass media, similar studies will be undertaken by interested persons. I thank all who helped me in academic pursuit. I am very much thankful to Dr. Amruthavaakula Seshakumar M.A., Ph.D., Asst. Professor Govt. Sanskrit College, Mulapeta, in Nellore for the foreword to this work. He gave suggestions for further literary studies regarding Dhurjati Kavi and his descendents. My gratitude and obeisance to Lord Parameswara who gave me the energy to undertake and complete the task. I dedicate this work to almighty mother Gnana Prasoonamba and Lord Sri Kalahastheeswara. I seek their blessings. Dhurjati Subba Rao, Vizianagaram, A.P.

9 ORIGIN AND HISTORY OF DHURJATIS The origin of Dhurjati families can be traced to the Dhurjati Kavi, one of the renowned poets (Astadiggajas Kavulu 8 famous poets equal to Eight great elephants that carry the Earth on their back at the eight corners of the Earth) of Sri Krishnadevaraya, who ruled Andhra and Karnataka in 17 th century. Dhurjati Kavi is the renowned author of the books Srikalahasti Mahathyam and Sri Kalahastheeswara Satakam. Sri Krishna Devaraya praised him what beautiful words came out of his mouth. How sweet and renowned the poems are. FAMILY HISTORY OF DHURJATI POETS (Krishna Devaraya Time onwards) JAKKAYYA (Grand Father of Dhurjati Kavi) NARAYANA and SINGAMMA (Parents) DHURJATI KAV,I FAMOUS POET, ONE OF THE ASTA DIGGAJAS OF KRISHNA DEVARAYAS ASTANAM AUTHOR OF SRI KALAHASTI MAHATYAM. MADHAVUDU VISWANADHUDU DHURJATI DANDAKAVI KALAYAMATHYUDU KUMARA DHURJATI LINGARAJA KAVI VENKATARAYAKAVI KRISHNAYYA MATYUD 1760 n 1830 SUBBA RAYADU RAMANAYYA In his treatise, he mentions that his parents as Singamma and Narayana and grandson of Jakka Narayana. He indicated as a Saivaite of Sri Kalahasthi and hailed from Bharadawaja gotram. He had no progeny is indicated. Sri. Kumara Dhurjati S/o Sr. Kalayamatyudu, Grandson of Dhurjati Dandakavi went to Nujiveedu and gave his poetic work (Kavyam) to Narasimhapparayudu. The works are Krishnaraja Vijayam and Hindumathi Vivaham. The poet composed his firs work at the age of 16 years. His son Lingaraju Kavi gave is work Kalahasti Mahatyam to Damerla Venkatapathi Nayak of Kalahasti. Dhjurjati Kavi had no issues. All the decedents are of Madhavadu, brother of Dhurjati Kavi. 7 generations of Dhurjaties became we known as poets. A few families of Dhurjati in trying to find out new pastures due to drought in Kalahasthi areas relocated to nearby Kalathoor in the same Taluk. Another section of Dhurjatis moved to Gopannapalem, which is 12 miles away from Kavali in Nellore District. One of the reasons may be due to Gopannapalem as more land and facilities were available at that time. Another reason for shifting to Kavali area is the establishment of rail tracks in the last quarter of 19 th century. Later,, Bitragunta became a prominent Railway Yard and Engine Shed under MSN Railway, where Repairs were carried for engines. Some families who migrated there obtained positions as Assistant Station Masters, Ticket Collectors and so forth. The move to Bitragunta is the first major movement outside Kalahasthi area in early part of 19 th century. Some of the important families of the present and past are given in different tables.

10 ORIGIN AND SETTLEMENT OF DHURJATIS IN PUNUGUNTALAPALEM: PHASE 1 ( ) Punuguntapalem and its surroundings The landscape of Punuguntapalem is enchanting with sand dunes and vast stretches of sand spreading hundreds of acres with many cashew trees and a few mango trees. The small villages spread over a wide area, look like the oasis in the desert, also look like village habitat in the Arabian Nights or in the Jaisalmer desert area of Rajasthan, except you don t find camels in this area. There is Buckingham canal nearby separating Punuguntapalem area with Krishnapatnam seashore on the other side. It is being developed as an important minor Port for exporting Marine products, like prawns, fish etc. Prawn and fishponds are being developed in the area using the backwaters of the sea nearby. The fine silica particles mixed in the sand are being processed and later exported to foreign counties through Madras Port, which is 90 miles away. Educational Institutions in the form of Primary and Secondary Schools have come up connecting Punuguntapalem to Gudur (nearest Railway Station) 30 Kms. away. The people are simple and hospitable. The area is predominated by Yadavas, Yenadis, who are either small landowners or agricultural labor. Physical and Social aspects of Pununuguntapalem. Punuguntapalem village is one of importance for the Dhurjati families: Area of the village 20 acres. Nearest Railway Station is Gudur Junction, 16 Kms away. (Broad gauge connecting Chennai to Howrah via Vizag.). The boundaries are North main road connecting Gudur, East-Irrigation Channel, South-Cashew Gardens, West-Sand Dunes and Cashew clusters. The Irrigation Channel stretches 7 Kms., Addepalli Village to Punuguntapalem. The Channel goes further east joins the sea (Bay of Bengal) 10 Kms. Away. Surrounding villages North Momedi, Varagali. East Mannegunta. South Kottapalem, Chintavaram (Place High School). West Yeruru Post Office and Delivery center for neighboring villages. Dhurjativari Kandriga (5 Kms. from Punuguntapalem) is the main agriculture land of 370 acres. It is divided into ten parts, divided among four major families of Dhurjatis. In the last years, Dhurjati families got educated, migrated to Gudur, Nellore and other places. ORIGIN AND SETTLEMENT OF DHURJATIS in Punuguntapalem Phase One: (FOUNDER OF PUNUGUNTAPALEM SECTION OF DHURJATIES) RAMASWAMY SUNDARA RAMAYYA SUBBAYYA AND HIS BROTHERS DHURJATI RAMARAO AND HIS BROTHERS D. NARAYANA RAO The first phase ( ) One of the family members, Dhurjati Ramanayya of Kalathoor, who has relations in Addepalli in the present Chilakur Mandal in Gudur Taluk, Nellore District came on a visit to see his relations. After a few days stay, he went on exploration, to see the landscape, see the flora and fauna. He saw a tree called Purugudu with a lot of green leaves giving shade. Also at the same time, nearby he saw water springs (Vootagaddalu in Telugu) locally mentioned as guntas.

11 The nature, trees and spring waters near Addepalli fascinated him. He consulted his relations brought his family from Kalathoor and settled. He christened place as Puruguda guntas area. Later due to short cutting of the name, it was called Punuguntapalem. He along with his sons, along with local labor class made up of Yadavas (aka Golla a cattle grazing class) and Yenadis (Tribals of Nellore District) developed the spring channel from Addepalli through Punuguntapalem to the seashore (30 Kms. Away covering a length of 70 to 80 Kms. Connecting village lands. As per the 1905 Revenue Records (Published during British time) available with the Karanam, Dhurjati families of Punuguntapalem developed irrigation facilities covering 680 acres to be shared by 10 families, the inheritors of the first family of Ramanayya who migrated to the new habitat, Punuguntapalem. The area was called Dhurjativari Kandriga (a local name for a vast stretch of agricultural land with some dry land for trashing or harvesting dried corn or paddy and also land left for cattle shed etc.). There was another stretch of land called Tamminapatnam Kandriga in Chilakuri Mandal developed by Dhurjatis in later half of 19 th century due to increase in population over 5 decades. In Punuguntapalem under the canal irrigation there was 39 acres under Inam land, 292 acres under Ryatwari totaling 331 acres. This long channel became a source for irrigation, for washing and cleaning. The wells nearby became source for drinking water. Another 4 families of Dhurjati under the leadership of D. Narayana Rao developed 400 acres from Adepalli to Punuguntapalem area. Phase Two (with some family vignettes): The Dhurjati families who were dependent on agriculture slowly began to take advantage of educational facilities created by local bodies like District Boards and Municipalities. These bodies were set up by the British to promote local self-government. Some schools were run by others like Missionaries, enlightened Zamindars (wealthy land owners) and educated Indians. Rapidly High Schools were established in Gudur, Sulurpet, Kavali, Venkatagiri and Nellore Towns. Christian Missionaries in Nellore started CBM Boys School, ABM Girl School. The Zamindar of Venkatagiri started a School cum college known V.R. College at Nellore. The early Dhurjati youth gained competency in Telugu language, English language, and applied skills in Accounting. They were appointed as Karanams (who maintain records of land pattas, birth and death records, and collection of revenue and so on ) and Munsif (to maintain law and order) who were put in charge of village administration. Above them are Revenue Inspectors (assessors of tax) who are below the Thasildar at Taluk level that supervised them. These is institutions are in decline now.. They were replaced by village assistant/v.d.o. (Village Development Officer). The traditional functionaries looking after village administration like Karanam, Munsif, Talari were abolished Many in Dhurjati clan, due to their educational skills filled these posts for a long time. The earliest Dhurjati to take advantage of High School and College education, is Mr. D. Rama Rao who obtained a B.A L.T. (Licentiate on in Teaching) degree. He graduated with a B.A. from Madras Christian College and followed by L.T. from Government Training College, Rajahmundry. The first to complete High school and College Education and come up in life among Dhurjati Subbayya children is the eldest son D. Rama Rao. He became the famous teacher of English, History and Geography. He became the well-known Head master of Nellore District. He worked in important places like Kavali, Butchireddypalem, Sulurpet and Kovur in Nellore District. He commanded love and respect from the District authorities. Being the eldest member, he helped his 4 younger brothers to pass SSLC (which was equivalent to matriculation of Universities), which was the stepping-stone for college studies. In those days passing high school and get the diploma, SSLC was difficult and considered as a great honor. A good command of English, a pass in the SSLC., examination (1910) is equivalent to a graduate study (B.A./B.Com) of present day. They could write essays, read the newspapers and write petitions and letter of public interest to various authorities. They could also speak English and Telugu fluently.

12 He had 4 brothers and 2 sisters of which 1 died at an early age. Having lost their mother at an early age, Mr. Rama Rao s younger brothers were raised by their maternal grandfather. Mr. Ramachandrayya and Mr. Sivayya worked under Venkatagiri Zamindar. Mr. Rama Rao who was married to Venkatasubbamma of Mulumudi Sundararamayya of Paturi village, (the birth place of Tikkana Somayaji one of the three authors of Mahabharatam in Telugu from 18 th century). They have three sons and one daughter. Mr. D. Narayana Rao (father of Dr.Subba Rao, the compiler this family history) after passing F.A from P.R. College, Kakinada obtained a B.A. (Chemistry) from Government Degree College Anantapur around He worked as a tutor in Chemistry in Pachaiyappas College in Madras. Later he joined Bombay Mutual Life Insurance Company as a Field Officer in Guntur with Headquarters in Madras. Later after nationalization, Bombay Mutual was merged in Life Insurance Corporation of India. He pursued a successful career in Insurance Products and Investments. He gave advice to many persons including officers, businessmen and traders. He was conversant with Taxation, Gold Bonds, and Stock Market Shares etc. He could convince a number of people to take up life insurance policies in these days of ignorance and of unknown fears. He had 7 sons and 2 daughters (family tree is given separately along with other Dhurjati families). Dhurjati Narayana Rao and Annapoornamma are seated in chairs. With some family members taken around 1961 or Terace of Brodiepeta House.

One of the early settlements of Dhurjatis in urbanization process is to spread to nearby places like Gudur (30 Kms) and Nellore (65 Kms.) from Punuguntapalem. Nearly families constructed houses at Gudur and called the place Dhurjati Nagar. This is the first instance where a good number of families constructed a colony to be named after their lineage. One such leading family is that of D. Govinda Rao who worked in the Punchayati Raj Department of Government of Andhra Pradesh. Now he has settled down in Dhurjati Nagar. Their family history is as follows: All the family members are well settled. Sri Govindarao is a devotee of Sri Sathyasaibaba of Puttaparthi. He lost his wife. After that he stayed in Puttaparthi for 2 years. He is now staying with his son in Gudur, doing some social work. Another family is that of D. Narayana Rao (S/o D.K. Murthy) given in DR Table 4B in PG 41. He is working in a factory. DHURJATIS AT SREE KALAHASTI AND KALATHOOR (Chittur DT) The Dhurjati Kavi (poet) and his brother s descendants for 7 to 8 generations mainly confined to Sree Kalahasti. Sri Kumar Dhurjati (4 th generation) went to Nuzvid in Krishna District to give his poetic work to Sri Narasimha Appa Naidu, King of Nuzvid. His son Linga Raju Kavi gave his work Srikalahasthi Mahathyam to Damerla Venkatapati Nayak, king of Kalahasthi. It seems in the next generation i.e. 18 th century some families moved to Kalathoor 12 Km away from Kalahasthi. In the 8 th /9 th generation around 1930s one section of Dhurjatis went to Gopannapalem near Kaveli, Nellore District. A memorial of Dhurjati Kavi is near the Railway Bridge at Kalahasthi under a peepal tree (Ravichattu). It has to be protected by Government or Sree Kalahasthi Devasthanam. The Dhurjatis in Kalahasthi were staying in Brahamin Street now called Nehru Street. At present there is no family there. A few families stayed in Ammannapalem 2 Kms from Kalahasthi. When we enquired in 2004, November there was no family yet present. Dhurjati Meenamma house is there. She is the daughter of Munimudi Gurusambayya. Her son D.L. Narasimha Rao is settled in Delhi working as consultant. One of the important settlements of Dhurjatis is at Kalthuru. Kalahasthi to Varadayapalam is 10 Kms. From there Kalathoor is 2 Kms. From Kalathoor, Ventlurupadu is 2 Kms and from there Sulurupeta 8 Kms. So Kalathoor is approachable also from Sulurupeta by road. Sulurupeta is a railway station on the way from Gudur to Chennai (Madras). The Dhurjutis in Kalathuru constructed Sri Prasanna Venkatewsara Swami temple 300 years ago see back cover. There are a few families at present in Kalathuru. One Section migrated to Punuguntapalem 16 Kms away from Gudur as stated earlier. The family trees at Sree Kalahasti and Kalathuru are given in a separate table see table No. I III pages DHURJATIS AT GOPANNAPALEM

32 As stated earlier in the later part of 18 th century the family known as Dhurjati Ramanayya moved to Gopannapalem (10 Kms away from Kavali). His descendents occupied a major chunk of land nearly 320 acres in and around Gopannapalem. Some settled in Pedapavani, Chinnapavani near Kavali some settled near Kasarlagottepalli in Kavali Taluq of Nellore Dist. The descendent of Dhurjatis at Gopannapalem is as follows. Kavali lies 50 Kms from Nellore town headquarters from Kavali, Jaladanki is from 6 Km on the way to Gopannapalem 14 Kms from Jaladanki, Tinkarlavaripalem, Gattupalli villages are there. So Gopannapalem proper is 10 Kms away from Kavali on the next to Chimakurthi. Sri Nataraja Murthy did B.Sc. (Maths), Govt. College, and Rajahmundry. Gold Medallist in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Sanskrit and English in Later did M.Sc. (Maths) from Andhra University and joined as Officer in Indian Postal Services. Retired as Member of Postal Board, Ministry of Communications, Govt. of India, New Delhi Both the sons of R.S.M. are in high positions one is in USA and the second Dr. Sasidhar is working as a Scientist, Environmental Division, General Electric Company, Bangalore. The 3 brothers donated part of the house sites at Musunoor for construction of Navagraha Mandapam, half of the land for construction of Samithi School in the village. In Kavali, they have a base. On the mother side Desibhotla Venkata Rangayya, brother of Lakshmi Narasayya, worked as a President of ADIMA JATHI SEVA SANGAM, New Delhi CHENCHU as the PREFIX IN NAMES OF DHURJATIS It is commonly noticed among some families of Dhurjatis that Chenchu is added before the name. For example, Chenchu Ramayya, Chenchu Subways, Chenchu Madhusudhana Rao. What is the origin for this? Around 1850 (155 years back) elders of Dhurjatis family advised Kampala family whose children used to die very early before completion of 1 year (high child mortality) to pray and perform Puja to Chenchu Muneeswara a presiding deity near Sri Kalahasti Temple. As a result of regular prayers and devotion in Kompalli family, a male child survived and lived with full vigor. He as christened or named as Chenchu Ramayya. So, it becomes a practice to pray to Chenchu Muneeswara in a small temple near the bank of Suwarnamuki River. The temple used to occupy large area in olden days and Narrow Street from the main road used to lead to the temple. This idol of Chenchu Muneeswara remained till Due to construction of shops and other business establishments, the temple with the idol does not find a place, perhaps it was placed somewhere. In view of the above facts, the Dhurjati family members of Sri Kalahasti and their successors in Punuguntapalem area used to worship Chenchu Muneeswara for a long time. Not only that, some families used to prefix Chenchu to the first member born in the family. Another interesting fact is that 4 generations back, some Dhurjati families used to worship Chenchu Muneeswara and used to prefix Chenchu to the name of the child. After Chenchu was added the Children born used to overcome the childhood maladies or diseases (called Balarishtas In Telugu/Sanskrit). The belief gained strength. In the present family of Dr.D Ch. Madhusudana Rao s great grandfather (Muthata in Telugu) when he was a child suffered from ill health for a couple of months. Then the elders in the family took a vow (pratigna) that they will call the first-born child with a prefix Chenchu. After that, he recovered. As he was already named so, next his brother was named as Chenchu Venkata Subba Rao. In the next generation also the tradition continued. His son was named as D. Chenchu Narayana, another son Chenchu Krishnamurthy and so on. In the present generation D.C. Madhusudana Rao and his younger brother named Chenchu Venkata Subba Rao carry the prefix. Dr. D.C. Madhusudana Rao named his daughter Chenchu Bala Anuradha. Dr. Madhusudana Rao s aunt was Chenchu Subbamma. So, the tradition continues in some Dhurjati families. Prof. D. Subba Rao s family:
