While going through the selection process of the new priest, and learning about its details, I realized that it was very ignorant of me not to have written about our priests, their importance and vital role they play in the society in any of my president's message of Like me, many of you may not realize that these priests are highly educated in their fields. Selection process of new priest consists of, not only the review of resume, but also personal interview. Like any super specialty, Hindu priest must know the proper procedures of conducting pujas for different occasions. They are required to conduct a public puja as the part of the interview process. Mr. Sharma and other learned people judge them. This is no less than any professional interview that many of us have faced. This realization has given me a deeper respect for our priests, who are the center of our religious activities. I will encourage all to acknowledge your appreciation to them. Youth group of HSNC arranged their open house on Jan.5. This was an overwhelming success. More than 50 new students signed up to volunteer. We are very proud of the activities and success of OM Squad in the past 5 years and look forward to another successful year. Summer camp plans are already in making. We plan to have 5 camps this year due to the high public demand. Our gratitude to all the adult volunteers and in particular to Mrs. Pinky Tapiawala and Mr. Aman Gupta, who have anchored this group since its inception Pongal was celebrated with usual fun and fair. This is the first major religious event at HSNC and keeping with the tradition, the new board was introduces to the general public. With the introduction, the board also laid down its priorities for this year. They are: Policy Manual publication. This will help to inform the membership and the new comers in the BOD and BOT, on the established and agreed policies that govern the society. Without this document in place, BOD has to make new policies, as we go, which some times causes concern and conflict. New Construction: We will give a new push to the construction of the main hall extension, a process that is stalled at the town of Morrisville for the permit at this time. Hospitality Committee: This will be a support system for the community. Details were mentioned in the January newsletter. Membership: Even though there are thousands of users of its facilities, HSNC membership has stayed very low. Although we are not at the point of requiring membership for all users, we will again try to launch a campaign to increase the membership. Auto draft donation: We encourage all donors to donate their planned yearly donation amount in twelve equal monthly installments, by auto draft from their banks. This gives us a steady income to pay the society s bills. Public relations: No board can succeed unless it can communicate and connect with the members. All who volunteered in the board are there to make you happy. At the least, the expectation from us is that we will listen to you and be courteous, fair and humble, even if we cannot fulfill all the requests. 13 What is YOGA I hope you enjoyed the article on Boat Pose (Naukasana) which I presented in the Yoga Corner last month. Today s column will be devoted to some introductory and background information on what yoga is and how yoga is beneficial for us. The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj which, depending upon the usage, can either mean to join/yoke or samadhi (total mental absorption). In the classical yoga text Yoga Sutras by Patanjali, yoga is defined as the ability to control the fluctuations of the mind-field. In this context the meaning samadhi is more appropriate since one can reach the state of Samadhi only after mind s fluctuations have been fully arrested. Traditionally, however, yoga is taken to mean the union between the individual self (the jeeva or atma ) and the universal consciousness ( paramatma ). Patanjali emphasizes concentration and meditation in order to achieve a calm and peaceful mind. The need to maintain a steady and comfortable seated posture for meditation for long periods of time necessitates a body that is healthy and free of disease and a mind that is free of worry and fear. The art and science of hatha yoga was developed to achieve such a mind-body complex. Several great yogis, including such names as Yogi Matsyendranath and Yogi Gorakhanath, are considered to be the 'forefathers' of hatha yoga. However, it is Yogi Swatmarama who compiled the wisdom of Hatha Yoga in his Hatha Yoga Pradeepika (HYP) which expounds the techniques such as asana, pranayama, mudra and shatkarma (the six-fold cleansing techniques). Through regular practice of these techniques, the body is purified of all the toxins, the nadis (channels of subtle energy) are opened for free flow of prana (vital energy), and kundalini shakti (the dormant serpent power) gets awakened. Through control of prana, the mind is automatically controlled and one can achieve a deeper experience of meditation. Patanjali, in his Yoga Sutras, has defined an 8- fold path called Ashtanga Yoga (more on this in a later issue) which is prescribed as a means of sadhana (individual endeavor) to achieve the objectives of yoga. It is unfortunate, however, that most people, and especially those in the West, associate the practice of yoga only with asana (physical postures) which is only one of these eight limbs. Even though asana is an important component of the practice of yoga, it needs to be integrated with other limbs to achieve full benefits from the practice. A traditional yoga class consists of asana, pranayama (breathing techniques), relaxation (yoga nidra) and meditation. A common misconception among people is that they need to be flexible to practice yoga (I often hear statements like, I can t do yoga because I am not flexible ). Nothing, in fact, could be farther from the truth. As stated earlier, the objective of yoga is to attain a state of mind which is peaceful and stress-free. Flexibility happens to be a natural by-product of a regular yoga practice. Yoga is suitable for people of any age, gender, and physical condition. A regular yoga practice can provide a large number of benefits, some of which are mentioned below: a) Red u ce stress, an xi ety an d d e- p ressi o n and stay rel axed. Deadlines, financial worries, relationship issues, traffic, prolonged sickness, negative emotions of anger, greed, jealousy etc all these are potential sources of stress. Chronic stress is acknowledged as the major cause of various illnesses like problems of the digestive, respiratory, reproductive, endocrine, and immune systems etc. It also results in heart problems, high blood pressure and other major illnesses. By practicing some simple stretches, breathing techniques, relaxation and creative imagery, one can learn to cope successfully with stressful situations, and stay calm and relaxed, even under the most trying circumstances. b ) L o se w eig h t, n aturall y. Most people who are trying to lose weight are aware of the basic guidelines for weight management proper diet and regular exercise. However, what they lack is the willpower to follow a routine on a regular basis that will ultimately result into a lifestyle change. Yoga helps develop the necessary willpower, reduces craving for food and alcohol as well as helps burn calories through the physical and breathing exercises in a yoga routine. Yoga also helps in improving digestion, eliminating toxins and regulating the endocrine system; all of these help regulate the weight and bring it to an optimum level. c) Increase you r mob il i ty in shou l - d ers, hi p s and o ther j oi n ts. Your range of motion tends to decrease, as you get older. Well, as they say - use it or lose it. Yoga takes all your joints through their full range of motion, increasing your mobility and flexibility over time. You ll be amazed at how much easier everyday activities like walking or running can become when you increase the range of motion in your joints. d) Sleep b etter and revi tal i ze. After practicing yoga even for a few days you will begin to sleep much better and wake up in the morning fully revitalized. You will continue to have abundant energy throughout the day to carry out your daily activities. e) Stren gthen, l eng then an d ton e you r mu scl es. Through the practice of yoga stretches, breathing techniques and relaxation, you will develop a deep sense of overall wellbeing and feel peaceful and tranquil from within.
