The Youth Group held an Ice breaker event on February 15th for children, ages 5 and above and a detailed description of the event s proceedings has been summed up by Nikita Prabhakar and Dr. Seema Mattoo in this issue. Saraswati Puja was celebrated on February 16 th with a lot of fanfare and was very well attended. To learn more about the significance of the event, read Dr Rupa De s article in this issue. Then on February 24 th, the halls of BTCCGL reverberated with melodious music as members of the Indian Classical Music Association of Purdue (ICMAP) got together with BTCCGL to celebrate Thyagaraja Aradhana. Meanwhile the Temple is open every evening from 6:30-8:00 for Nitya Puja and from 10:30-12:00 on Sunday mornings. If you are already an annual member of BTCCGL then consider upgrading to Life Membership. Likewise we encourage all our Life Members to upgrade to Bronze/Silver Level to extend your support even further and sustain your organization. 2 P a g e 2 Saraswati Puja Dr Rupa De Basant Panchami or Saraswati puja is an important Hindu festival, which is celebrated in the month of Magh (Jan/Feb) on Shukla Panchami tithi. As a result, in the dead of winter, when the dark dreary days are upon us, Maa Saraswati arrives with her serene white beauty, filling our world with the notes of her Veena. With her raised palm, She assures us that spring is not far behind and brighter days will be here soon. Maa Saraswati is the goddess of learning, wisdom, and arts and is primarily worshipped in Bihar, Orissa, and West Bengal in India as well as Bangladesh. However, now she is worshipped all over the world, wherever people of these three Indian states reside. The Purdue community is no exception to that. The Bengali community here has been worshipping Her since As in India, where students normally arrange the puja, here also the puja used to have a lot of student involvement. The puja this year began with fervent phone calls to find out if the Bengalis here would hold the puja at BTCCGL. Once that was decided, meetings were held, lists made, cooking assigned, recipes exchanged, and tasks delegated. The people I personally had the privilege to work with were bubbling with enthusiasm. Through this event, I met some great organizers and it was a pleasure to work with them. My thanks go to all of you who worked so hard to make the event a great success. It truly was a community puja just like the community pujas in Kolkata. The night before the puja many volunteers came and arranged the mandap, and put up the decorations and lights. Food tables were also set up. It all got arranged so smoothly, almost magically. Professor Suranjan Panigrahi performed the puja, assisted by Dr. Pankaj Sharma. They did it with utmost devotion and minute attention to detail. Professor Panigrahi s explanations helped us understand the rituals better. The puja was followed by shanti jaal and prasad. A delicious lunch was served afterwards. In the evening, there was aarti and bhajan, and in the next morning, bisarjan was performed. Goddess Saraswati showers special blessings to students; so, students often bring their books, (computers), and musical instruments to be blessed. Many students here, too, brought their books, especially in the areas where they might need a little more help. One very important aspect of this puja is Vidya Arambha or Hatey Khari, where kids are taught to write for the first time with the help from the priest, under the watchful eyes of the Goddess. A number of kids were initiated here as well. Personally, I am very pleased that all of you participated in this puja. Many thanks again to all the volunteers who worked so hard to make it a success. 4 P a g e 4 BTCCGL Youth Group News Ms. Nikita Prabhakar and Dr. Seema Mattoo Quietly in the background, the Youth Group has been toiling be it by keeping young children entertained during temple poojas and seminars or by creating crafts and toys for temple events. But on February 15, the Youth Group let off some steam and held its own Ice Breaker party! About thirty kids of all ages attended the event and had lots of fun getting to know each other, learning about Indian culture, and making crafts. From learning the meaning of Bharatiya to eating yummy homemade brownies (thank you to Dr. Aparna Puri for baking them!), kids got a chance to engage with other youngsters in their community. The evening started off with everyone introducing themselves onstage with a microphone, an effort meant to instill confidence in the shy newcomers. This truly "broke the ice" as everybody easily became comfortable with each other. There were a few quick speeches by some of the group leaders regarding the multiple programs that the Youth Group wishes to undertake. Specifically, Arthi Puri and Anuj Patel described the Recycling program and how youth can implement simple recycling efforts at a personal and community level. To this end, the Youth Group has arranged for BTCCGL to get its own recycling bins. Krithika Subramaniam next described the Hunger Project that she and Kaveri Sheth are spearheading. For this effort, the youth group plans to implement donation and food collection drives for the homeless. Devna Patel and Seema Mattoo then described the Quarterly Seminars Series, wherein teams of youth from each of the three age groups (grades K-3, 4-8, and 9-12) will prepare short presentations on various topics related to their Indian- American heritage. To illustrate such topics, Seema Mattoo led an interactive and lively round of trivia questions and presented cultural information; it's safe to say we all learned something new! The night ended with snacks and an exciting game of musical chairs. The Ice Breaker was a huge success; thank you to all those who attended! Parents, please be sure to send your kids to the next Youth Group event!!
