Hence on this day in Kerala, homes are beautifully decorated and auspicious items are kept at the family altar. Tamil and Tulu New year are celebrated by worshiping the family deities, preparation of sweet and other delicacies and the reading of the Panchangam (Religious Almanac). The panchangam reading provides a list of all good and auspicious things as well as any adverse events that are likely to occur that year due to the transitory movements of planets as well as due to the presiding deity for the year. It is believed that listening to the panchangam reading will magnify the predicted good effects and mitigate the effect of adverse events. The word Akshaya means growth and trittiya is the third tithi. It is believed that any ritual done on that day leads to growth and hence jewelry and ornaments are bought on that day for overall prosperity. Every time, roughly about 1500 sandwiches are prepared and delivered to Martha s Table, a DC shelter. SSVT encourages all devotees especially youth to participate in the program. We invite all seniors 55+ to join us at the meetings and share our seniors-related common interests. We invite speakers from within and outside the group to talk on topics of interest to senior citizens, such as those related to health, religion, finance, legal matters. vacation travel, etc. We also hold programs such as music & comedy, picnics and bus trips which would help promote social interaction between members of the group. This day falls on Thursday, May 10 this year according to North American Panchangam. On this day, there will be Sahasranama Archana and a special Vada Alankaaram to Lord Anjaneya. Those devotees who would like to bring Vadas (no onions or garlic in the Vadas please!) for the Alankaram are requested to do so by 5:30 pm so that the priests may plan the decoration accordingly. 5 Priest Sri Easwaran Nampoothiri to Serve only During Ayyappa Mandala-Makara Sankranthi Seasons Sri Siva Vishnu Temple acknowledges with sincere gratitude the exemplary services provided to the temple by Sri Easwaran Nampoothiri as an Honored Priest from September 14, 2000 to March 31, The temple and the congregation appreciates the religious practice, dedication and guidance offered by Sri Easwaran Nampoothiri as Melshanthi, which consistently represented the highest quality in the Hindu Tantric Traditions. He is responsible to elevate SSVT Ayyappa Sannidhi to be known as the Shabarimala of the West. Previously he had served as Melshanthi at Shabarimala Ayyappa Sannidhi, Shabarimala Malikapurathu Amma Sannidhi and Shabarimala Pampa Ganapathi Sannidhi. After 18 years of tireless service to the temple, Sri Easwaran Nampoothiri is retiring from full-time service. He will continue his services as Melshanthi during the Ayyappa Mandala Makara Sankranthi seasons in the coming years. Priest Sri Vishnu Nampoothiry Joins SSVT Priest Sri Vishnu Nampoothiry joined SSVT on November 13, 2017 as Tantric Priest, during the last Ayyappa Mandala-Makara Sankranthi season. He has been trained as a Kerala Hindu Tantric Priest in Krishna Yajurveda. He is proficient in all Kerala Tantric traditional pujas. He is also proficient in Astrology and Vaastu Vidya Shastram, and can diagnose and prescribe remedial measures. He has been performing Ayyappa Pujas, Bhagavati Sevas, and Sarpa Bali. He helps in all the Sannidhis. He speaks Malayalam, Tamil & English. 6 6 Program SSVT EDUCATION PROGRAMS Learn More about Your Roots & Culture Balavidyalayam Children s Educational Program - 10:00am 11:30am (Education room) Students engage in dialogue around inner conflicts between what they want to do, what is an easy choice and what is a better choice, even if they don t really want to do that! Teachers use the Bhagavad Geeta in an age-appropriate manner to teach about sthithapragnya the elusive steady mind. Students are learning select verses in Chapters 2 & 3 working towards the annual Geeta performance on June 10th, Please enroll your student for classes at SAT Classes - 1 st and 3 rd 3:00pm 5:00pm (Education room) Meets every month on the 1st and 3rd Sundays. Students are encouraged to sign-up for guidance on SAT preparation. Classes are organized into two semesters: September - January and February - June Upanishads for Adults - 2 nd 12:00pm 1:30pm (Education room) All ten principal Upanishads are considered from different perspectives. When discussing a Upanishad, often related verses are invoked - from the Bhagavad-Gita, and sometimes even the aphorisms from the Brahma Sutras. After each session, written material is provided to all attendees Narayaneeyam - 2:45pm 3:30pm There are eighteen main Purarnas, in the Hindu scriptures. The most important is Sreemad Bhagavatham. It has slokas. Narayaneeyam is a condensation of this vast Purana, and contains only 1036 slokas, with its philosophical and devotional contents intact. Bhagavatam for Adults - 3:30pm 5:00pm Bhagavatam is considered the purnaana tilakam, vaishnavaanaam dhanam, bhkti, jnaana, vairaaghya pradaayakam. The pancama skandham in the Bharata Rahoogana Savaadam is presently discussed in class, along with word meanings, its explanation and significance. Midweek Yoga - Tuesdays and 6:30pm 8:00pm (Auditorium) This is gentle yoga class for all levels and age groups with modifications for advanced practitioners. The class includes asana-s of all types; forward bend, backward bend, twist, balancing, strengthening, inversions etc. Also included are powerful breathing techniques, energy center cleansing techniques, relaxation, and mantra chanting for spiritual growth. Weekend Yoga - 7:30am 10:30am (Aakaar room) While traditionally yoga is thought as an art and philosophy of the nature of existence and connecting with the source of all, recent development of science in the area of coherence of matter makes yoga measurable and scientific as well. Our Saturday sessions bring this regular practice that is accessible to all: young and old, healthy or otherwise. Please walk-in any Saturday. No prior reservation is needed. The practices are gentle in nature within the capacity of most individuals. It consists of physical, breath, sound vibrations, affirmations and meditative observation. Bhagavad Geeta classes for Adults - 10:0am 11:30am (Education room) The Bhagavad Gita is a doctrine of universal truth. It is a part of the scriptural trinity of Sanatana Dharma. The Gita deals with the most sacred metaphysical science as it imparts the knowledge of the self and answers two universal questions: Who am I? How can I lead a happy and peaceful life in this world of dualities? Spoken Samskritham Level :30am 1:00pm (Education room) Builds on the foundation of beginners Samskritam class. Elements of grammar, further conversation and written skills are emphasized in this class. Santhanam, there is no surprise behind Sri.Ramachandran s unique voice and talent. He has won many prizes in the Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana, as well as in India and the USA. In December 2010 and 2013 music seasons, he got the Best Performer Award from Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, Chennai. Kamalakiran was awarded the Lalgudi G Jayaraman Award, as best violinist in the 2014 Gokulashtami Series in Krishna Gana Sabha. Kamalakiran has been performing in all major venues in India and the US since 2009, including the Kennedy Center, etc. In the 2014 Spirit of Youth series, and the 2016 and 2017 Music Seasons, Kamalakiran was selected as the best violinist in the prestigious Music Academy in Chennai. Vijay Ganesh began learning the mridangam from the age of 6. He had his tutelage under the great and illustrious master, Vidwan late Sri.Kumbakonam Rajappa Iyer. Vijay Ganesh has established himself as a leading Mridangam player, and has performed extensively in music festivals in India, USA and Canada. He has accompanied many leading artistes including musicians of the Hindustani stream. He has won several awards which include Best Mridangist award from Music Academy in 1999, Best Mridangist award from Sri Krishna Gana Sabha in 1998, Government of India Cultural Scholarship for Mridangam from 1995 to 1999 and several other prizes from various sabhas in Chennai. She is a graded artist of All India Radio, Chennai, also a recipient of the Bharat Ratna Dr.M.S.Subbulakshmi Fellowship Award instituted by Shanmukhananda Sabha, Mumbai. Her awards also include Youth Talent Recognition Award - Rotary Club of Nanganallur, Youth Achiever Award - Yuvashakthi, Most Promising Talent - Chennai Times Margazhi Music Award, Parupalli Ramakrishna Panthulu Award - Vipanchee. She has been performing in all leading sabhas like Narada Gana Sabha, Mylapore Fine Arts, Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, etc during the December Music season in Chennai. Madhu (Ganesh) Vadlamani is a junior studying at UNC-Chapel Hill, pursuing a Major in Computer Science and Minor in Astronomy. His initial training started in vocal from his aunt Smt. Sujana Parupalli at the age of 6. He later switched to violin and is currently under the tutelage of Smt. Seetha Ramakrishnan and Smt. Ranjani Ramakrishnan. He has won many prestigious awards at Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana and in India. Karthick Narayanan is from Chennai, India and has been learning mridhangam under Chrompet G. Suresh for over 12 years. He is an All India Radio B-High Graded Artist and has accompanied several senior vidwans in Chennai, as well as in the United States. He has performed consistently during the Madras Margazhi festival and has given concerts in most of the leading sabhas all over India. Karthick has been awarded Guru Surajananda Award from Sri Krishna Gana Sabha for the year 61st Gokulashtami Series and was the title winner of Sangeet Samrat Samyuktha Sreeram is a 10th grader at Briar Woods High School in Virginia. She learns ghatam percussion from Sangeetha Kala Acharya Sri TH Subash Chandran and vocal music from Kalaimamani Smt. Charumathi Ramachandran. She has participated in various music festivals and accompanied concerts in US and Chennai. Samyu has also won awards at Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana and recently, from the VVSF Foundation in Chennai. In 2017, she was selected as an Indian Raga Fellow. 9
