These enrichment programs help nurture their hidden talent and interest in your child for this beautiful art and help bring out the best in your child. This summer, the music school is offering the following Enrichment Programs. Please read carefully. It is dated material. Respond and register before the deadline in order to get confirmation of your registration. Please make sure you submit your completed registration forms to the school no later than the registration deadline of Wednesday, June 20 th, 2012 in order to secure your place in the summer programs. Retain this newsletter for your record of the days and timing of the enrichment programs. Enrichment Programs: The music school will be offering two wonderful enrichment programs this summer. Enrichment Program 1: June 25, 27, 29 and July 2, 4, 6 Enrichment Program 2: Songs of Saints Bhadrachala Ramadasa (telugu), Andal (tamil), Meerebai (hindi), Tulasidas (hindi), and Sadasivabrahmendra (Sanskrit) August 20, 22, 24, 27, 29 31

2 Enrichment Program 1: Offered On: June 25, 27, 29 and July 2, 4, 6 Eligibility: Students must be currently learning kritis. This summer, students will have the opportunity to learn and sing the five beautiful compositions of Sri Muthuswamy Dikshitar referred to as the Ganesha Ghanaraga Pancharatna Kritis. Lord Ganesha, the elephant faced god, is the remover of obstacles. He is first worshipped at the onset of an auspicious occasion or celebration. Lord Ganesha is seen as the god of education, knowledge, literature, wisdom, and fine arts. His multiple forms have influenced many composers of Carnatic music, including Sri Muthuswamy Dikshitar. Sri Muthuswamy Diksitar, an outstanding composer and great scholar, was the youngest of the Trinity of Carnatic music composers. His Sanskrit compositions are celebrated for their richness in raga bhava, the sublimity of their philosophic content, and the grandeur of their saahityam. Dikshitar has composed 26 krithis in praise of Lord Ganesha, out of which five krithis are in the ghanaragas that parallel those of St. Thyagaraja s Pancharatna krithis.

3 Enrichment Program 2: Songs of Saints Bhadrachala Ramadasa (telugu), Andal (tamil), Meerebai (hindi), Tulasidas (hindi), and Sadasivabrahmendra (sanskrit) Offered On: August 20, 22, 24, 27, Eligibility: Students must be currently learning varnas and/or kritis. This summer, students will get a unique opportunity to study, learn, and sing some of the beautiful compositions of saints Bhadrachala Ramadasa, Andal, Meerebai, Tulasidas, and Sadasivabrahmendra. These great songs are known for their simplicity and depth of devotion. Students will learn compositions in telugu, tamil, hindi, and sanskrit language. The sanskrit word saint is saadhu, which derives from the root saadh, meaning, To accomplish. A saint is the one who accomplishes things for the sake of others, having freed himself or herself from any personal pursuit of security and pleasure. Saints are living expressions of the living culture of India, Inhabiting different regions, they have greatly enriched the devotional and philosophical literature of their regional languages and inspired millions of people in the religious pursuits.

5 Annual Music Examination This year s annual music examination is scheduled from Monday, September 17 th through Monday, October 1 st. Each year students are required to take the annual music examination to evaluate progress and to help each student to perform well in class. The examination must be taken seriously and sincere efforts must be made to prepare well for the examination. This is accomplished by utilizing the summer holidays with time table for daily practice and revision in mind. Summer months are really the best time to improve the quality of singing by regular practice of voice exercises in three speeds followed by akara sadhana exercises. Please encourage your child to take responsibility for his or her practice and revision of all lessons studied to date during the holidays. Students who do well in the examination are recognized for their efforts in the annual Vijayadashami celebrations.
