1 2017 NORTH AMERICAN DEANS CONFERENCE APRIL 27 to 30, 2017
2
3 WELCOME Dear Sisters and Brothers, On behalf of the Cathedral Chapter, staff, and congregation, I am delighted to welcome you to St. James Cathedral, for this annual gathering of cathedral deans (both current and retired) and spouses. It is a privilege and joy to be the host cathedral for this year s conference, and we are excited and delighted that you are with us. A leading English liturgical scholar, when asked to explain in simple terms what happened in the Eucharist, once remarked, First Christ encounters us and then he changes us! With that in mind, our theme this year links the mission of the cathedrals we rejoice in serving and leading with the transformation that the risen Christ both brings us and commissions us to share with the world. I am deeply grateful to our speakers and preachers who have accepted my invitation to speak to us in the coming days. Rabbi Yehiel Poupko will bring us an insight into a rabbinical approach to Scripture that I am confident will joyfully open our minds and hearts. Dr. Damian Zynda will help us rethink our understanding of sacrifice in the context of the story of Oscar Romero. Tony Preckwinkle, the President of Cook County, will share with us the challenges of living out a vocation to transform society. Professor Martyn Percy will help us reflect on the faithful witness of our cathedrals and their role in the world. These talks will be surrounded by two major celebrations of the Eucharist, at which we are fortunate enough to have as our preachers The Rt. Rev. Jeffrey Lee, Bishop of Chicago, and The Rev. Dr. Mark McIntosh, Professor of Christian Spirituality at Loyola University Chicago, both of whose ministries play vital roles in the life of the church in this diocese. I am indebted to those whose generosity has helped make the conference program affordable and enjoyable, and I hope you will enjoy their hospitality in the context of the meals we will share together. I am also profoundly thankful to my colleagues at St. James Cathedral, especially to our Director of Administration, Robert Black, without whose support this conference would not have been possible. Thank you all for being here enjoy the conference! Dominic Barrington THANK YOU TO OUR CONFERENCE SPONSORS The Rt. Rev. Jeffrey Lee & The Diocese of Chicago CM Almy John & Judy Bross Richard Hoskins The British-American Business Council of Chicago The Conrad Hotel, Chicago

7 CONFERENCE SPEAKERS The Honorable Toni Preckwinkle is President of the Cook County Board, a position she has held since her election in She has been a community leader for more than two decades, providing independent and progressive leadership founded on experience, know-how, and a commitment to practical results. Toni stood up to the City of Chicago s political machine and, despite failed first attempts, ran an improbable campaign against the political establishment and was elected alderman of the 4 th Ward in In her 19 years as Alderman, Toni improved the quality of life of her constituents by providing independent, transparent, and accountable leadership. She ended the old patronage model in her ward that awarded jobs based on political clout. She successfully fought for greater funding for education and affordable housing in her ward. She sponsored the Living Wage and Affordable Housing Ordinances, and was a lead plaintiff in a lawsuit to institute a more racially equitable map of Chicago s ward boundaries. Toni sponsored an ordinance that limits the establishment of payday loan stores and was a lead sponsor of the anti-smoking ordinance. Her independent and progressive leadership earned her the Best Alderman Award six times from the Independent Voters of Illinois Independent Precinct Organization. Toni holds BA and MA degrees from the University of Chicago. She taught high school history for ten years before her election to the City Council. Toni is the mother of two children and grandmother of three. Dr. Damian Zynda is the Director of Ignatian Identity at McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester, NY. She completed a doctorate in Systematic Theology and Christian Spirituality from the University of St. Michael s College and the University of Toronto. Damian is on the faculty of the Christian Spirituality Program and the Master of Ministry at Creighton University and St. Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology. She is a spiritual director involved in the formation and supervision of spiritual directors in the Ignatian tradition. She has given and directed retreats in the United States, Canada, Italy, Spain and Ireland and has presented numerous workshops and lectures on spiritual direction, the supervision of spiritual directors, and the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius locally and at National Conferences. Interested in the intersection of spirituality and psychology, Damian s first book, Archbishop Oscar Romero A Disciple Who Revealed the Glory of God, traces the spiritual development and psychological growth of Oscar Romero, articulating a Spirituality of Conversion that is both human and divine.
