2014 HOLY WEEK DEVOTIONAL GUIDE OVERVIEW It is widely thought that Holy Week was established in the fourth century A.D. by believers in Jerusalem. Christians there observed the culminating events of Jesus life by going to the historic places on the days they would have occurred. The purpose of an observance like this was to help worshipers remember the life of Christ, specifically the final events of His time on Earth in human form. The reason we remember is to offer an act of worship to Him. In this guide, recommended Scriptures and songs will help your times of reflection. During the times of prayer that follow the reflections, please don t limit your prayers to a one-way conversation (talking to God). Try to listen so you can hear from the Lord as He speaks to you this week. PALM SUNDAY, APRIL 13 Also called Passion Sunday, Palm Sunday is the Sunday before Easter. It commemorates Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem before He is crucified. It helps us frame the significance of Holy Week. The joy we associate with Palm Sunday is a stark contrast to the passion events later in the week. The shouting (Mark 11:9) as well as the spreading of cloaks and palm branches on the road were ways in which the Jews honored Jesus as He entered Jerusalem. As we gather to worship the King of kings and the Lord of lords, let s celebrate His person, His glory and His lordship as the Bride of Christ. Scripture: Mark 11:1-11 (The Triumphal Entry) 1 Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples 2 and said to them, Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it. 3 If anyone says to you, Why are you doing this? say, The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately. 4 And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. 5 And some of those standing there said to them, What are you doing, untying the colt? 6 And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go. 7 And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. 8 And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. 9 And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest! 11 And he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. And when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve. Song Reflection: Hosanna (Praise Is Rising) Praise is rising, Eyes are turning to You; we turn to You. Hope is stirring, hearts are yearning for You; We long for You. 'Cause when we see You, We find strength to face the day. In Your presence All our fears are washed away, Washed away. Hosanna, hosanna; You are the God who saves us, Worthy of all our praises. Hosanna, hosanna; come have Your way among us. We welcome You here, Lord Jesus. Hear the sound of hearts returning to You; We turn to You. In Your Kingdom broken lives are made new, You make us new 1

MONDAY, APRIL 14 There is generally not a significant theological focus given to the days immediately following Palm Sunday. The Scriptures shared are the passages following the Triumphal Entry, and traditionally represent the next days following what we observe as Palm Sunday. Additionally, as we move closer to Easter, continue to ask the Lord to reveal places in your life that need to be confessed as sin. Repent from those dark places, so that you can be a clean vessel before the Lord this week as the church family gathers to worship together. Pray that God will prepare you to hear what He has for you this week. Scripture: Mark 11:12-19 (Jesus Curses the Fig Tree; Jesus Cleanses the Temple) 12 On the following day, when they came from Bethany, he was hungry. 13 And seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 And he said to it, May no one ever eat fruit from you again. And his disciples heard it. 15 And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. 16 And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. 17 And he was teaching them and saying to them, Is it not written, My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations? But you have made it a den of robbers. 18 And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and were seeking a way to destroy him, for they feared him, because all the crowd was astonished at his teaching. 19 And when evening came they went out of the city. Song Reflection: Power of the Cross (Johnson) Once in darkness, now in light; Once blind, now you see; Once a sinner, now a saint; Once bound, now free. That's the power of the cross, See the chains fall; That's the power of the cross, See the chains fall. Once a stranger, now a child; Empty, now filled; Once condemned, now reconciled; Broken, now healed. Once a prodigal, now home; Once lost, now found; Once an enemy, now a friend; Once poor, now crowned. TUESDAY, APRIL 15 As we saw yesterday, there does not appear to be a sizeable focus given to the theological significance of the Tuesday before Easter. The Scriptures shared are the passages following the Triumphal Entry, and traditionally represent the next days following what we observe as Palm Sunday. Continue to seek the Lord as the week progresses, that He might reveal any sinful places in your life that need to be confessed. The decision of repentance follows the deliberate act of confession. Both involve a dedicated reversal of trajectory from darkness into light, which enables us to become pure before the Lord. This week, as the church family gathers to worship together, come to the services ready to hear what God has for you. 2

Scripture: Mark 11:20-25 (The Lesson from the Withered Fig Tree) 20 As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. 21 And Peter remembered and said to him, Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered. 22 And Jesus answered them, Have faith in God. 23 Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, Be taken up and thrown into the sea, and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25 And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. Song Reflection: Jesus Died My Soul to Save I stand amazed at Your love for me That lonely night in Gethsemane. This sinner's heart can't help but thrill To hear You pray, Father, not my will. What depth of love, what reach of grace! Oh, how my grateful heart now aches To sing it louder, the refrain, Jesus died my soul to save. Atonement full, applied to me; The blood that spilled at Calvary Has swallowed all my sin and shame, I'm reconciled in Jesus' name. Oh, such pleasure, oh, such pain; The Father's wrath and fury lay On Christ, Who saves and angels praise Jesus died my soul to save. Come you broken, bound by sin, And let your weary journey end. Come, and lay your burdens down Where mercy rules and peace abounds. What can wash away my sin Nothing but the blood What can make me whole again Nothing but the blood WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16 Historically, the Wednesday of Holy Week (also dubbed by some as Spy Wednesday ) commemorates Judas plot to betray Jesus into the hands of His enemies. How have we betrayed Jesus in our own lives? Maybe we have an area in our life that is betraying the Lord ask Him to illuminate your soul on this subject. Plead with the Lord to open your eyes so that you can see any potential place to which you sell out and betray Him. Lift prayers of confession and repentance, and ask God to purge those areas from your life. Pray that God will prepare you to hear what He has for you as the week progresses. Scripture: Matthew 26:14-16 (Judas to Betray Jesus) 14 Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, What will you give me if I deliver him over to you? And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. 16 And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him. Song Reflection: How Deep the Father s Love for Us How deep the Father's love for us; How vast beyond all measure; That He should give His only Son; To make a wretch His treasure. How great the pain of searing loss; The Father turns His face away; As wounds which mar the Chosen One; Bring many sons to glory. (song continued on next page) 3

Behold the Man upon a cross, My sin upon His shoulders; Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice Call out among the scoffers. It was my sin that held Him there Until it was accomplished; His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished. I will not boast in anything, No gifts, no pow r, no wisdom; But I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection. Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer. But this I know with all my heart: His wounds have paid my ransom. MAUNDY THURSDAY, APRIL 17 Jesus shared a final meal with His disciples, known as The Last Supper. This Passover meal is generally recognized to have occurred on the evening before the Crucifixion, which is known as Maundy Thursday. The term Maundy Thursday comes from the Latin, mandatum novum, which literally means a new commandment or new mandate (see John 13:34). Following the Passover meal, we read in Scripture that they sang together and then went to the Mount of Olives (see Matthew 26:30), where Jesus went to pray, and was eventually betrayed by Judas into the hands of those seeking to kill Him. There is gripping narrative describing the gut wrenching events that ensued following The Last Supper. For additional narrative detailing the events that transpired in the hours following the Passover meal (all the way to early the next morning), read verses of Matthew 26. Scripture Matthew 26:17-29 (The Passover with the Disciples; Institution of the Lord s Supper) 17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover? 18 He said, Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, The Teacher says, My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples. 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover. 20 When it was evening, he reclined at (the) table with the twelve. 21 And as they were eating, he said, Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me. 22 And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, Is it I, Lord? 23 He answered, He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born. 25 Judas, who would betray him, answered, Is it I, Rabbi? He said to him, You have said so. 26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom. Song Reflection: The Power of the Cross (Getty/Townend) Oh, to see the dawn, of the darkest day, Christ on the road to Calvary; Tried by sinful men, torn and beaten then; Nailed to a cross of wood. This, the pow'r of the cross, Christ became sin for us. Took the blame, bore the wrath; We stand forgiven at the cross. (song continued on next page) 4

Oh, to see the pain, written on Your face, Bearing the awesome weight of sin. Ev'ry bitter thought, ev'ry evil deed; Crowning Your bloodstained brow. Now, the daylight flees, Now, the ground beneath; Quakes as its Maker bows His head. Curtain torn in two, dead are raised to life. Finished, the vict'ry cry. Oh, to see my name, written in the wounds, For through Your suff'ring, I am free. Death is crushed to death, Life is mine to live; Won through Your selfless love. This, the pow'r of the cross, Son of God, slain for us. What a love, what a cost, We stand forgiven at the cross. GOOD FRIDAY, APRIL 18 Also known as Black Friday (yes, a theological term!), Good Friday is observed on the Friday before Resurrection Day (Easter). It is probably the most somber day observed by Christians, as it commemorates the Crucifixion. The word good seems on one level to be an unusual descriptor, but, because of the ultimate good that comes from the tragedy of Christ s suffering, the word is associated with this day. We read in 2 Corinthians 5:21, For our sake, he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. Jesus took on our sin (and the sin of all humanity), so that we might have hope for eternal life. Our hope is in Him. It is interesting that the day is listed as the day of Preparation, (see John 19:31). It had a cultural meaning in the context of the Jewish calendar and their Sabbath. However, on that day, preparations were made not only for the Sabbath, but also for all eternity! Most New Testament scholars attribute the actual year of Jesus Crucifixion to be either A.D. 30 or A.D. 33. While some respected scholars hold to the earlier date, evidence suggests a stronger case can be made for the latter date. One of the more significant aspects of Good Friday is the number of Scriptures about Jesus that are referenced and/or fulfilled on this day alone. Space does not permit them all to be listed here, but would make for an interesting follow-up study. Some examples are listed below. Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. Compare/confer (cf.) Luke 23:32-33 and Isaiah 53:12. They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. Cf. John 19:24 and Psalm 22:18. After this, Jesus, knowing all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), I thirst. Cf. John 19:28 and Psalm 69:21. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Cf. John 19:32-33, 36 and Psalm 34:20. Jesus cried out with a loud voice My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Cf. Matthew 27:46 and Psalm 22:1. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. Cf. John 19:34 and Zechariah 12:10. Scripture: John 19:16 b -30 (The Crucifixion; The Death of Jesus) So they took Jesus, 17 and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. 19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. 20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, Do not write, 5

The King of the Jews, but rather, This man said, I am King of the Jews. 22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written. 23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, 24 so they said to one another, Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be. This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. So the soldiers did these things, 25 but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, Woman, behold, your son! 27 Then he said to the disciple, Behold, your mother! And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. 28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), I thirst. 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, It is finished, and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. Song Reflection: Jesus Messiah He became sin who knew no sin, That we might become His righteousness. He humbled Himself and carried the cross. Love, so amazing. Love, so amazing. Jesus, Messiah, Name above all names; Blessed Redeemer, Emmanuel. The Rescue for sinners, The Ransom from heaven; Jesus, Messiah, Lord of all. His body, the bread; His blood, the wine; Broken and poured out, all for love. The whole earth trembled, And the veil was torn. Love, so amazing. Love, so amazing. All our hope is in You, All our hope is in You. All the glory to You, God, The Light of the world. SATURDAY, APRIL 19 The terms Holy Saturday or Easter Eve are used to describe this contemplative day between the Crucifixion and the Resurrection. While Holy Saturday seems to be more widely used in labeling this day, the function of the day is one of reflection and preparation. When looking back one day, there is cause for intense introspection related to Christ s sacrifice on the Cross. Moreover, once that contemplation is complete, there is a wonderful opportunity of excitement and expectancy in anticipating the arrival of Resurrection Day. The hope that comes in the vein of Sunday s a-comin! brings great exuberance for the believer. Scriptures: John 19:38-42 (Jesus Is Buried) 38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. 39 Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there. 6

Matthew 27:62-66 (The Guard at the Tomb) 62 The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63 and said, Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, After three days I will rise. 64 Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, He has risen from the dead, and the last fraud will be worse than the first. 65 Pilate said to them, You have a guard of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can. 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard. Song Reflection: O the Blood O, the blood, crimson love, Price of life's demand; Shameful sin, placed on Him, The Hope of ev'ry man. O, the blood of Jesus washes me; O, the blood of Jesus, shed for me; What a sacrifice that saved my life; Yes, the blood, it is my victory. Savior, Son, Holy One, Slain so I can live; O, see the Lamb, the great I Am, Who takes away my sin. O, the blood of the Lamb; O, the blood of the Lamb; O, the blood of the Lamb; The precious blood of the Lamb; What a sacrifice that saved my life; Yes, the blood, it is my victory. O, what love, no greater love; Grace, how can it be That in my sin, yes, even then, He shed His blood for me. What a sacrifice that saved my life; Yes, the blood, it is my victory. EASTER SUNDAY, APRIL 20 Believers observe this day as Resurrection Day, when Christ arose from the grave. Psalm 30:5 b summarizes the hope we have in Easter: Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning. Can you imagine what the disciples (and those with them) experienced on that glorious day? They watched Jesus die on Friday, so it had to be a challenge just to get to Sunday morning. Do you ever feel like that? Can I make it to Sunday? Well, those followers who went to visit the tomb that morning experienced the surprise of the ages, as the angel of the Lord had a simple, yet profound message, Jesus is alive! Their transformation went from hopelessness to excitement, and from despair to hope. WOW praise be to our God! As Christians, we celebrate the glorious Resurrection of our Lord. We also have a tremendous opportunity to help point people to Jesus. Let s pray that today, the Gospel message will be powerfully proclaimed through praise and proclamation, and that God s Word will draw all men to Him. The redemptive act is completed as death is defeated. Hallelujah, He is risen! He is risen, indeed! JESUS IS ALIVE! Scriptures: Luke 24:1-12 (The Resurrection) 1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. 5 And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise. 8 And they remembered his words, 9 and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the 7

rest. 10 Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, 11 but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. 12 But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened. Matthew 28:1-10 (The Resurrection) 1 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. 5 But the angel said to the women, Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you. 8 So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, Greetings! And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me. Song Reflections: Forever (We Sing Hallelujah) The moon and stars, they wept, The morning sun was dead; The Savior of the world was fallen. His body on the cross, His blood poured out for us; The weight of every curse upon Him. One final breath He gave As heaven looked away; The Son of God was laid in darkness. A battle in the grave, The war on death was waged; The power of hell forever broken. And now, death, where is your sting? Our resurrected King, He s overcome, He's overcome. Christ the Lord Is Risen Today (Easter Hymn) Christ the Lord is ris'n today, Alleluia! Sons of men and angels say, Alleluia! Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!
