2 ST AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO 9TH ANNUAL OKTOBERFEST SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30TH Plans and preparation for our 9 th Annual Oktoberfest German Heritage celebration are in full swing. This year s event promises to be better than ever! New entertainment and expanded craft beer offerings are among some of the exciting new additions. The festival committee is grateful for all the support parishioners have given in the past and hope you will continue to do so through volunteering your time. Also, in addition to booster donations and silent auction items, we are in need of 6 packs of beer and summer sausages for paddle game raffles. BOOSTER CLUB As Oktoberfest is our largest fundraiser of the year, offsetting expenses becomes critical. Please consider becoming a booster. SILENT AUCTION ITEMS Oktoberfest is now less than two months away and we are in the process of procuring items for our silent auction. Any new items are appreciated. Popular items include: restaurant gift cards, wine, sports event tickets and memorabilia. Items can be dropped off at the parish office between the hours of 8:00am and 4:00pm Monday through Friday, given to an usher at any of the weekend Masses or we can arrange to have them picked up. Mass intentions are scheduled on a first come first serve basis and are $10 per intention. Stop in or call the parish office. ST VERONICA BUS TRIP-WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3RD DOWN THE ROAD TO AMISH COUNTRY Join us as we drive to Westby and Cashton, WI. Visit the doorway to the Driftless area, a region of un-glaciated mountainous terrain known as the Ocooch Mountains. Lunch at Borgens Norwegian Café, before visiting the Amish Community with stops at cheese factory, bakery and quilt shops. (Need to bring cash for the Amish Community; they do not accept credit cards). Cost is $100 person. Bus leaves St. Veronica at 8:00 am and returns by 8:30 pm. Reserve your spot today with Monica Phillip, IMMACULATE CONCEPTION PASTA AND MEATBALLS DINNER Come join us on Saturday, September 8th for our delicious pasta and meatballs dinner catered by That s Amore. $10.00 for adults, children under 12 $8.00 and children 3 and under are free. Bring the family after Mass and enjoy spaghetti or penne pasta, tossed salad, Italian bread and coffee or milk. Dinner will be served from 4:30-7:00pm in Ryan school hall. Take-outs are available along with scrumptious homemade desserts. Indulge in a beverage of wine, beer or soda. If that isn t enough, there are pull tabs and raffles along with plenty of parking. We are located at 1023 E Russell Ave. Enter the hall off the school parking lot. CHOIR REHEARSALS BEGIN SOON Have you always wanted to sing with a group? Would you like everyone to hear that beautiful shower voice? We would love to have you join us singing at Mass each week. Our first choir rehearsal will be Wednesday, September 12th at 7:00 pm in the church loft. Rehearsals are Wednesdays 7:00 9:00 pm. Enter the door off the parking lot behind the large rectory garage. ADULT BIBLE STUDY BEGINS NEXT WEEK Help us celebrate 10 years of daytime adult Bible study among our parishes by joining the first study 1 Peter/Jude. The group begins Wednesday, September 5; 9am 10am; Sacred Heart of Jesus Community Room.(3635 S Kinnickinnic Ave) The study will last only six weeks and it will be No Cost. WELCOMING ADULTS OR CHILDREN INTO THE CATHOLIC CHURCH Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults will begin on September 9 with the Inquiry sessions. At these sessions, anyone considering becoming a Roman Catholic can ask questions and discuss their interest. No formal decision needs to be made during this period. So if you are: over age 7 but never baptized; were baptized non- Catholic and now want to become a Catholic; or were baptized Catholic but never received Communion or Confirmation you are invited to participate. ELEMENTARY/YOUTH MINISTRY RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Classes begin on Sunday, September 16 at 9am. Registration forms or online registration/payment are available at Children must have attended grade 1 in order to prepare for sacraments in grade 2. For additional questions please contact Rebecca (youth ministry) or Karen (elementary), ADULT CONFIRMATION PREPARATION Our South Shore parishes offer a one semester preparation program for adults to prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation beginning September 24. If you are interested in preparation for this Sacrament of Initiation which is necessary to become a Godparent for Baptism or to complete your sacraments, karen@secatholic.org or check the website at Cycles of Faith 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time "This saying is hard; who can accept it?" The words of Jesus' disciples in today's Gospel must sound familiar. At some point in our lives, you and I have said it about some article of our faith. Christianity makes firm demands on our ethical behavior and gives no easy answers for suffering. Many disciples were confused and dismayed by Jesus' words in the Bread of Life Discourse. "The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life." For some, Jesus' reassurance was not enough. These disciples do not question Jesus further or wrestle with their lack of understanding. The mighty deeds Jesus has done fade to the background. "Many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him." For them, their doubt proves too much. Jesus turns to the Twelve, knowing that confusion lives in their hearts as well. Peter answers. "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God." Notice this is not a confession of perfect understanding. It is a confession of faith in Jesus. The precise words may still confuse them, but they believe the One who said them. In our own lives, we face doubt, confusion, and disillusionment in our Christian faith. The same choice available to the disciples is available to us. Do you have faith in Jesus, even when you lack perfect understanding? Will you stay or will you go? What do you do with your doubt? Jesus then said to the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave?" Simon Peter answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
