1 Passages that shaped my life: Galatians 2:14 By: Shane Robinson April 13, 2014 But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all, If you, being a Jew, live in the manner of Gentiles and not as the Jews, why do you compel Gentiles to live as Jews? (Galatians 2:14, NKJV) The early church had to work through some cultural and traditional issues. When Paul came to town he saw some prominent Jewish Christians withdrawing themselves from their Gentile brethren (Gal. 2:11-13). It wasn t right and Paul was compelled to address those involved. Putting myself in Paul s shoes, I m shaking in my sandals! Something needs to be said, but this is Peter we re talking about. Paul had a battle to face, and he faced it head on. What compelled Paul to speak out to everyone in attendance? But when I saw they were not straightforward about the gospel Liberalism does not mean what it meant 100 years ago. 100 years ago liberalism had to do with whether or not the Bible was inspired, whether or not Jesus was born of a virgin, and other major church doctrines. Today, liberalism is often applied to a church that has a gym, or a church that uses a certain Bible translation, or a preacher that doesn t wear a tie. We could go on and on. We need to learn to choose our battles wisely. Do we actually want to spend our time arguing over things that really do not matter in the grand scheme of things? Arguing over petty issues will never lead the lost to Jesus! Let s make sure we get the gospel right and then spend our time in its defense.

2 W HO AT MY DOOR IS STANDING? In Holman Hunt s great picture, called The Light of the World, we see One with a patient, gentle face, standing at a door which is ivy-covered, as if long closed. He wears the priestly breastplate. He bears in His hand the lamp of truth. He stands and knocks. There is no answer, and He still stands and knocks. His eye tells of love; His face beams with yearning. You look closely, and you perceive that there is no knob or latch on the outside of the door. It can be opened only from within. Do you not see the meaning? Christ, through His Gospel, knocks at your heart s door. He stands there while storms gather and break upon His unsheltered head, while the sun declines, and night comes on with its chills and its heavy dews. He waits and knocks, but you must open the door yourself. The only latch is inside. J. R. The book of Galatians talks about some of the battles these members faced (3:1; 5:1). Paul was a minister to the Gentiles, and Peter a minister to the Jews. When Peter came to town, Paul noticed Peter would shun the Gentile members when Jewish members were around (vv.11-13). After observing, and making sure he had his facts straight, Paul confronted Peter about his sin (v.14ff.). WHY IT HAS MEANING TO ME (THE MEANING) When I became a full time minister I struggled with being myself because I feared what other people would say or think about me. After studying this section I realized I was trying to please the wrong people. In a way, I was guilty of the same thing Peter was (v.12). This passage helped me understand life is not about trying to be some one I m not (v.6), adhering to the traditions of men (v.12a), or fearing rejection by my peers (v.12b). It s all about the gospel (vv.14). WHY I WANT TO SHARE IT WITH YOU (THE PURPOSE) Don t seek to be a people pleaser (Phil. 2:19-22). Don t be consumed with vain traditions (2 Tim. 2:24-26). Never compromise the gospel (Rom. 1:16-17; 1 Cor. 15:1-2). GET CONNECTED // chickamaugachurch.com // //
