June 2017 Thank you for showing an interest in this exciting new permanent post. It arises from a retirement from the Benefice of Alveston, Elberton and Littleton and some longer term thinking about ministry across the Severnside Area. The PCCs have agreed that the potential for growth can be increased by the division of the parishes into two geographically adjacent parts. This post will cover the parishes of Alveston, Elberton, Littleton and Olveston with Aust which are in the north of the area. Those to the south, Almondsbury, Pilning and Compton Greenfield, will be overseen by Revd Philip Rowe who is currently vicar of Almondsbury with Olveston. Earlier this year a time-limited position was advertised but discussions about pastoral reorganisation have now begun which make this new post possible. This information pack provides an outline of the role, the skills and experience that we are looking for, plus some further background to the Diocese. As a diocese we have a vision of Creating connections with God, each other and our communities, across Bristol, Swindon, South Gloucestershire and North Wiltshire. These are exciting times for us as we sense a real energy locally to reconnect with our communities and reignite our calling to be a Church for this and future generations. Page 4 Our vision, priorities of making disciples, growing leaders and engaging younger generations, and the strategic plan that has been agreed to support them are our response to what God is calling us to. Mission areas are a key strategic initiative that harnesses our ministry, mission and resources to work towards our vision. This can be explored further at The new role will involve working closely with Revd Philip Rowe and a large number of associate clergy and licensed lay ministers in order to enhance the mission and ministry to each village across the Severnside Area. Building on the existing links with local schools plus good links with the Methodist churches in the area the potential for growth is high. Thank you for taking the time to consider this opportunity. If this is a role that excites you and you believe that you have the necessary skills, experience and motivation, we would very much like to hear from you and we look forward to receiving your application. Please submit your application on the Application Form and ensure you have also read our Applicant Guidance Notes. Yours in the Good Shepherd Rt Revd Mike Hill Bishop of Bristol Rt Revd Lee Rayfield Bishop of Swindon Ven Christine Froude Archdeacon of Malmesbury and acting Archdeacon of Bristol

INTRODUCTION Based in the village of Alveston you will work closely with the four other villages to develop, alongside the leader of the South Severnside parishes, the mission and ministry of The Severnside Group of churches. This informal group, formed in 2010, has made good progress in promoting mission, coordinating ministries to schools and sharing resources, skills and worship with one another. Until recently the plan to have a Focal Minister in each parish was in place. The retirement of the vicar of Alveston, Elberton and Littleton in 2015 and the death last year of the SSM focal minister in Olveston provides an opportunity to build on the progress in the northern parishes and, working with the leader of the southern parishes, to take things to a new level across the Severnside Group. Plans for Pastoral reorganisation, which will see the division of the Almondsbury and Olveston Benefice into two parts and the formation of two new benefices (North and South Severnside,) is underway. When this is completed it is anticipated that the two Priests in Charge will become the vicar in each. In the North Severnside parishes we are seeking someone with strong leadership skills to work in partnership with the large team of licensed colleagues, ordained and lay, to develop faith and gifts within our congregations for the benefit of the community. The key aspects of this work will include: Strengthening the links between the churches as well as supporting village activities and clubs Investing in the development of leaders across the parishes Bringing new ideas for the use of liturgy and music in both formal and informal styles of worship Working with the schools and engaging with younger generations The four PCCs have consulted in the preparation of this application pack and are excited that, together under the leadership of a new Priest in Charge, existing resources can be shared and new ones developed in order that the mission and ministry of the church in each village will be able to flourish. For further information regarding the vacancy please contact one of the wardens listed in the contacts section. Page 5

CONTEXT About miles north of Bristol, Alveston is the most densely populated of the villages with a population of 2,600; Olveston, at the geographical centre of the Northern Severnside group parishes, has a population of 2,033. Both have retained many vital community facilities and transport links. The villages of Aust, Littleton-upon-Severn and Elberton all have under 200 people. This welcome is delivered through pastoral care, rising numbers of occasional offices and active involvement with our wider community life. The two largest churches, measured by congregation, Parish Share generation, electoral role and growth, are St Helen s Alveston and St Mary s Olveston (see table at page 17). A38 Page 6

MINISTRY TEAMS The Alveston Team comprises two Licensed Lay Ministers and one LLM Emeritus. The team meets weekly following a Tuesday morning Holy Communion service, to plan Services and events for the week ahead. The team arranges the ministry in light of each individual s strengths in order that each member can grow and fl ourish in their vocations. We are committed to growing leaders within each centre of worship and to engaging the whole congregation in the active life of the churches. Pastoral Care teamwork across the Alveston benefi ce is coordinated by two LLMs. Holy Communion is regularly taken to members of the congregations who are in a local care home and other church members who are now unable to get to church. The Olveston Team currently comprises the vicar, one honorary curate with PTO and three Licensed Lay Ministers. The Mission Leadership Team meet monthly or every four weeks after daily morning prayer to discuss policy and key ministry objectives. It works alongside 13 independently led teams responsible for each major aspect of the Olveston church life, carried out by about 180 volunteers. More information at and Facebook St Mary s Church, Olveston. Revd Ann Parker is the Focal minister at Aust. She works closely with the ministry teams in Olveston and Alveston. Page 7

ST HELEN S ALVESTON PARISH WEBSITE PARISH PROFILE Alveston is a semi-rural community in which St Helen s Church has an important role to play. There are many community events organised by the church that provide opportunities for connecting with the community we serve. These include the church fetes, Christmas lunches and Easter teas for the elderly, Remembrance Day and Not Forgotten services, children s workshops, folk concerts, quiz nights, treasure hunts, pudding nights and charity coffee mornings. The PCC comprises 18 members, and over 60 volunteers carry out many duties and tasks for our church. St Helen s is blessed by a group of accomplished musicians who support our services with a mix of musical styles. The worship group has also staged community performances of several of Roger Jones musicals. The monthly family service includes age-related activities and children are involved in the service as valued members of the team. There are strong links with local schools which we would love to develop and build upon. Volunteers have recently joined with members of the local Methodist Church to take Open the Book sessions into school. This has been a very successful venture which has been praised by parents and is extremely well supported by the headteacher and staff. We also lead termly Prayer Space sessions at special times such as Christmas and Easter. Every Tuesday afternoon the church is open and people are invited to drop in for a chat, to light a candle, say a prayer or just meditate in our peaceful surroundings. Informal prayer meetings are held fortnightly on Wednesday afternoons. These are open to all but at present attended by only a few. We are currently considering ways to develop and deepen our life of prayer together. Page 8

We host a relatively high number of weddings, funerals and baptisms. Baptisms are a particularly joyful occasion, usually carried out within services. Christmas services are very well supported by the community, local school and uniformed groups. Easter sees a wide range of services of differing styles attended by large congregations. On Easter day a cross is decorated and becomes a popular feature hanging on the church gate for the following week. House Groups meet throughout the year with special study groups hosted during Lent. These evenings provide the opportunity to discuss faith, explore less familiar parts of the Bible and ask questions in a supportive environment. St Helen s, Alveston is a Grade II listed, Victorian, Gothic style church built in Six years ago a major reordering took place which has given us more fl exibility for different activities and ensured that the building can be kept comfortably warm. The pews and plinth were removed, the kitchen area, and the toilet was developed and access to the fi rst floor of the tower was obtained via a new spiral staircase. The creation of this wonderful community space has allowed for the use of the chancel for smaller services; unrestricted space for the music group below the pulpit and variation of seating in the nave to accommodate formal and informal gatherings and community events. Page 9

ST. MARY S LITTLETON-UPON-SEVERN PARISH WEBSITE PARISH PROFILE The village of Littleton-upon-Severn is a varied and active, tightly-knit community, always open to new arrivals, and able to help one another whenever need arises. There is a good cross-section of people living here including a number of farming families and others who work locally. There are good close links between the church and the important village hall where numerous events take place including suppers, coffee mornings, a gardening club and charity fundraising events. A brilliant village system operates to inform and resolve issues within the village. As well as the usual weekly services, we have special services for Harvest and to celebrate baptisms and marriages, many of which fill the church. The annual Carol and Christingle services are strongly supported by the community and, at times of loss, the church is a great support for the whole village. The community and congregation benefits from, and hugely appreciates, the ministry of the benefice ministry team. St Mary De Malmesbury, Littleton-upon-Severn is a beautiful Grade II listed building. Between 2004 and 2006 the community worked together to raise enough money to re-roof the church and five carved stone crosses were also replaced. The church benefits from a very scenic churchyard which is still open for burials. Our Quinquennial review in March 2015 wrote: The premises are very well presented and diligently maintained by a small committed congregation. Page 10

ST JOHN S ELBERTON PARISH WEBSITE PARISH PROFILE Elberton is a stable and supportive community which values its independence and its smallness. The Church plays an important part in the life of the village; highlights include the carol service, Plough Monday celebrations and the church fete, which is an important part of village life. St John the Evangelist, Elberton stands in a very attractive churchyard. The Victorians updated the Medieval church and some of the original structure and fittings remain. The recent Quinquennial review has confirmed that the structure of the church and its surrounds are in reasonable condition. The churchyard is still open, and many former villagers wish to be buried there. Page 11

Page 12 ST MARY S OLVESTON PARISH WEBSITE PARISH PROFILE St Mary s Olveston will be at the geographical centre of the new Northern Severnside group of five parishes of Alveston, Aust, Elberton, Littleton and Olveston. Together with St Helen s Alveston, we have ambitions to build on the legacy of our late SSM focal minister, and continue to grow our rural ministry. Across the Severnside Churches Group we help with Lent Group planning, marriage preparation events and the annual Severnside Songs of Praise. We have provided two LTO leaders as focal ministers for other Severnside Parishes. St Mary s Mission Statement is to provide stimulating and challenging worship, to assist each other to grow in faith in Christ, and to show His love in the Parish and beyond. A vibrant, loyal and committed congregation ensures that St Mary s is at the heart of village life and the Severnside group of churches. We regularly hold services outside the church to be a witness to the community, including an annual open air service, Rogation walk, Palm Sunday procession with donkey plus a Walk of Witness on Good Friday and Dawn Eucharist on Easter morning. On special occasions the church is packed with families and children. Many people from within the Parish choose St. Mary s to celebrate life s important milestones such as weddings, baptisms and funerals. Numerous people with a qualifying link to the Parish also return for marriages. We encourage people to grow in faith and deepen their understanding of God s word, and our recent focus has been on encouraging spiritual growth by raising the profile of prayer. St Mary s is a very generous church in time, talents and money. Biennially, we hold a major outreach appeal to raise money for both UK and international causes, endeavouring to engage with the local community in our fundraising events. Our last three programmes raised over 49,000 whilst still managing to increase our Parish Share pledge to the Diocese each year.

At St Mary s we have a tradition of excellent music. Our 37 strong church choir is fl ourishing and sings at one service per week, alternating between evening and morning services. When the choir is present, the style of music used is mainly traditional mainstream Anglican (ie chants for psalms and canticles). Our Director of Music is a talented organist and musician who brings a sensitive interpretation of playing hymns and anthems, enhancing worship. We have a strong group of handbell ringers who ring for special occasions in church and eight tower bells which can be rung for weddings and most 10am services by a team of eight ringers. All of this is complemented by a small group called One Voice who sing less traditional hymns during communion. We have very close links with Olveston Primary School (we have three foundation governors) which draws pupils from all over Severnside area. The annual village fete is organised by church and school together and is held in the grounds of the school, the vicarage and the church. Tockington Manor School has historic links with the church and holds its annual Christmas service there. We also have one governor at Marlwood Secondary School. The Grade II* listed 12th Century St Mary s Church has a central Norman tower, (c. 1170).The original tall spire was famously destroyed in a storm on 28 November,1604. The church was extended in the 14 th century by the main nave and North and South side aisles and further extended Westwards in The roof was completely renovated in A major re-ordering project in 2009 ( 0.25m) equipped the church with new choir stalls, a clergy vestry and accessible toilet and lobby at the West end and renewed electrical and heating systems to modern standards. New facilities for a wide range of different activities included a kitchen, a second toilet, separate meeting room in the chancel, full audio-visual projection facilities in the nave including central drop down screen with rear projection, stage for erection in the nave sanctuary with eight performing microphones and a fl exible circular open area under North transept, central tower and South transept for exhibitions, tables for seating diners (90), and quizzes. High speed wi-fi is available in the church. Page 13

These all help us in our outreach, both local and international, by enabling activities such as church fetes (in partnership with local CEVC school), annual Summer Ball, twice monthly Movie Club, holiday time Children s Movie Club, high quality concerts (international, national and local artists), biennial outreach fundraising which brings the community together and raises large amounts for deserving targeted causes, oversubscribed quiz nights and a weekly coffee shop. The PCC comprises 27 members with many other local volunteers supporting the maintenance and well-being of both the community and the Church buildings. Multiple pastoral care initiatives are coordinated by St Mary s including a number of Pastoral Assistant volunteers who cover each area of the Parish. We are looking to build on our strengths to further attract younger families and also our ministry to attract the growing number of older members joining our Parish community. Page 14

ST JOHN S AUST PARISH WEBSITE PARISH PROFILE The Parish of Aust is contained within the main parish of Olveston from whom we enjoy magnifi cent support whilst allowing the DCC to be autonomous. Worship numbers at St John s have never been high; records for the last 30 years show a regular number on an average Sunday would be 10/12. As a church we feel it is important to give back and do this through our carol singing, fete and fundraising, which enable us to make donations to various charities including Bristol Children s Hospital. St John s Church dates back to medieval times and has been subjected to alteration and extension on many occasions up until the Victorian period. The church is a Grade II* listed building which was re-roofed in Over the next few years we plan to make changes to the central heating system, close off the tower vestry area and resurfacing the footpaths outside the building. 17 CONGREGATIONS AND SERVICES St Mary s (Olveston) provides a broad range of worship services, giving people the opportunity to choose a style that suits them best. Three services are held each Sunday at 8am, 10am and 6pm with an average of 100 people attending. Our service pattern is mainly traditional and includes Morning Prayer, Sung Eucharist, Evensong, Holy Communion and Celtic Communions, plus opportunities for something different on fourth Sundays. On third Sundays at 4pm we have Back to Front services where we are exploring worship with modern technology. There is a 8.30am morning prayer service each weekday which is Holy Communion on Wednesday. St John s (Aust) have two services each month led by Revd Ann Parker our non stipendiary Focal Minister. Page 17

LIVING IN ALVESTON Whilst Olveston and Alveston both currently have clergy housing, the vicarage in Olveston is planned to be sold so the vicarage at Alveston will be the residential location of the new incumbent. Page 18 The vicarage is a large, modern, centrallyheated home situated very close to the church and next door to the school in Alveston. It has fi ve bedrooms as well as several reception rooms and a modern kitchen. There is a large, shady garden with trees and shrubs plus an extensive, sunny, grassed area on which our summer fetes are often held. Alveston is a friendly thriving community with dozens of active societies and social groups, which has in the past few years won several CPRE Village of the Year awards. There are several well maintained play areas and fi elds for our children and sports teams. There are good schools in Alveston for all ages as well as a Pre-School and private Nursery. In 2015 Thornbury (the nearby town) was named in the top 50 best places to live in the UK due to low crime rate and good school performances. Alveston has a range of shops including a Post Offi ce, general stores, chemist, greengrocer, butcher and hair salon. Alveston has two hotels, Alveston House Hotel, which is an award winning hotel, and a Premier Inn linked with the 16 th century Ship Inn. We also have the Cross Hands village pub which strives to support the community with fund raising events for local charities throughout the year. There are good transport links to Bristol with its harbour side leisure areas, renowned theatres and restaurants and large shopping facilities. Parkway Station offers countrywide rail links, the Severn Bridge is only 10 minutes away and we are on the doorstep to the Cotswolds and the Wye Valley.
