2 PASTOR S COLUMN FALL RAFFLE: Thanks to all those who helped to make our Fall Raffle a success. Thanks to all those who purchased tickets to support our parish, Lori Vasconi and Carol Koch for managing the day to day details, all those who sold tickets, and the Women s Guild for serving and cleaning up after the dinner. The $10,000 prize winner was Robert Kuzel, the $2,000 prize winner was Dorothy Yao, and the $1,000 prize winner was Dorothy Yao. COMPUTER UPGRADE: A tremendous note of thanks goes out to John Kutchenriter for upgrading our internet and cable system in the offices and in the Guild Hall. John has been working on trying to solve the problems we were having for months. This past week he was able to get us up and running where we need to be. All of his hard work has been a tremendous gift to our parish. Some of the hardware for this upgrade came from your CSA pledges. Thanks to John and to all of you for helping to put us back online. PARISH COMEDY NIGHT: Mark Friday, January 18, 2019 on your calendar! We will be holding another parish comedy night consisting of dinner, professional comedians with clean humor. These have been wonderful evenings and hope you will consider joining us for this year s event. Invite family, friends and neighbors. Tickets will be on sale soon consider them as stocking stuffers for Christmas. SCRIPTURE CLASS INFANCY NARRATIVES: Fr. Tom Whitman will be offering a four week Scripture Class on the Infancy Narratives (stories of the birth of Jesus). It will begin on Wednesday, November 7, at 7:00pm in the choir room. The other dates vary: Monday, November 12, Tuesday, November 20, and Monday, November 26 all at 7:00pm. You can sign up on the bulletin board in the Gathering Space. PARISH ALL SOULS SERVICE: On Friday, November 2, at 7:00pm we will hold our annual All Souls Service in the church. We invite families and individuals who have lost a loved one since last All Souls Day to come and pray together for those who have died and to pray for those who continue to mourn their loss. ANNULMENT SEMINARS: The Office of the Tribunal and Matrimonial Concerns is once again taking their services on the road and offering information sessions for persons in need of an annulment. We ask all priests, deacons, and lay persons in pastoral ministry to please invite anyone whom you know to be in need of an annulment to consider attending the next session on October 24, at Sacred Heart Church, Erie. The session will begin at 6:30 PM and will include a presentation on the annulment process and the opportunity to meet one-on-one with members of the tribunal staff to answer individual questions. CEMETERY LAWN CARE: We are in the process of taking bids for cutting grass at both St. Mary Cemetery and St. Rose Cemetery. If you are interested in bidding this job please contact the Cemetery at PARISH COUNCIL NOMINATIONS: In December a few members of Parish Council will be completing their terms and we are looking for people who may be interested in serving in their place. If there is someone you would like to nominate, or if you wish to nominate yourself, please write their/your name on a piece of paper, place it in an envelope marked Parish Council and drop it in the collection basket or at the parish office by November 4. To be eligible to serve on council: You need to be a registered member of St. Joseph Parish for at least one year, You must be at least 18 years of age and have been confirmed, You cannot be a parent, child, or cohabitant of any other member of Council. REFLECTION ON THE READINGS: Our readings today focus on the fact that Jesus entered into our human nature to understand the things we go through, even to the point of entering our temptations, our sufferings, and even our death. The purpose of doing all that was so that we might be able to share in the fullness

3 Reflection on the Readings continued of his life to be lifted up from our human life to share in his divine life. The first reading comes from a section of the book of the prophet Isaiah in which the Suffering Servant is described. There seems to have been someone in Isaiah s time who was innocent and who chose to suffer to save the people. This became an image of who Jesus would be and who Jesus was and is for us. Jesus didn t come to get all kinds of praise and awards from us, but to show us in person what real love and concern for another person is really like. He was willing to enter into our struggles, our suffering, and even our death in order to show us how much he loves us. The second reading from the letter to the Hebrews focuses on the fact that Jesus is God and yet he chose to humble himself to become one of us in everything that we as humans experience joy, love, suffering, and death. Jesus understands what it is to be human and what it is that we rejoice in and what it is that we struggle with. Jesus experienced our humanity in order to show us to the way to enter into his divine life, to be one with him in heaven. Jesus wants us to come to the fullness of our potential. We were made in God s image and likeness and we are thus meant to be one with God as the culmination of all that we are as human beings. But too often we settle for much less, we settle for being human. The gospel today takes place right after Jesus explains to his disciples for the third time that he will suffer and die. But the disciples still don t get it. In fact today they ask for places of glory at the right and left of Jesus in his kingdom. How patient Jesus is with them, and with us, in one more time speaking about how his kingdom is not about power or glory, but about service. But what is the point of this service. Service is the reaching out to those in need around us and trying to help them get back on their feet or to raise them up to a place where they can survive or thrive on their own. Service is about trying to raise people up to a higher level, trying to level the playing field in order that we all have enough. Ultimately the service of Jesus is about trying to raise us all up to the level of God, to the level of real glory, to the place where we are all one, one in peace, one in joy, one in love, united in the heart of a God who desires nothing less than to be one with us.
