2 PASTOR S COLUMN OCTOBER COUNT: Every year during the month of October the ushers count the number of people who come to each Mass and we report those totals to the diocese. We are grateful to the ushers for being diligent about this during all the weekends in October. Since the change in the Mass schedule in 2011 the numbers in attendance on average for the entire weekend (average total for all three Masses) has been as follows: 718 (2011), 792 (2012), 655 (2013), 676 (2014), and 643 (2015). The 5:15 Mass averages 195 people, 8:30 Mass averages 177 people, and the 11:00 Mass averages 271 people. Looking at these totals in light of the numbers we reported in August that there are 1192 families registered at St. Joseph which totals 2939 individuals which works out to 22% of our parishioners attend Mass here on the weekend. VOCATIONS PRAYER: I want to thank all those who have been signing up for a week at a time to pray for vocations and all those who are praying on their own for vocations. As we pray for more vocations we might also keep in our prayers our seminarian, Ian McElrath, who is in his second year at St. Mary s Seminary in Baltimore. If you, or your family, are interested in taking one of the weeks of the year to pray for vocations, please sign on the appropriate week on the bulletin board in the Gathering Space. There are also extra copies of the vocation prayer available on the bulletin board for anyone to take. PARISH DIRECTORIES: The new parish directories arrived and are available in the Gathering Space. Please be mindful of the appropriate pile to take yours from. Those who had their picture taken for the directory are entitled to a directory there is a special pile of directories just for those who had their picture taken. Please mark an X next to your name to indicate you have picked up your directory. For those who didn t have their picture taken there is another stack of directories where you are asked to print your name as you take one. There is a limited number (100) of directories for those who didn t have their picture taken. THANKSGIVING DAY MASS: Mass on Thanksgiving Day will be at 10:00 am in the church. REFLECTION ON THE READINGS: We move into the month of November which is traditionally a time to pray for the dead. The readings during these last few weeks of ordinary time reflect on the end of time while the hours of daylight dwindle and the darkness seems to be there early and late each and every day. And in the midst of the darkness we begin with all hallows eve, Halloween, or the eve of All Saints. And so our readings this Sunday are not from the 31 st Sunday in Ordinary Time but from the feast of All Saints. The first reading is from the book of Revelation which is often interpreted in negative ways, but is really about the power of God to triumph even over death with the glory of resurrection. People tend to get caught up in the number 144,000 sometimes thinking that these are all the people that will be saved from the billions and billions of people that have existed from the beginning of time. It leaves us with an odd notion of a God who would only save a few of the people he created. We obviously need to understand the number as symbolic. We at times use the exaggeration, it will never happen in a million years. We use that phrase to speak about how something will never happen, or it will happen in a time so far in the future we can t even count. For these ancient people a thousand was an exaggeration number like we use millions or billions today. The number comes also from the exaggeration that there were 12,000 from each of the 12 tribes. There were a huge number of people from each of the twelve tribes of Israel that were saved. Hence 12 times 12,000 gives us the 144,000 who are saved. It represents a huge number of people, too large to count. And note how in the next paragraph it is referred to as a great multitude which no one could count. There is no limit to God s mercy. The second reading from the first letter of John calls us children of God. This reading is often used at funerals to speak about how we were children of God from the beginning and will be children of God even after death. We can never be separated from God and that there is something of God in us from the beginning. The gospel gives us the familiar but not very well understood passage of the Beatitudes. In Matthew s gospel, where we find these Beatitudes, Matthew wants to show us that Jesus is the new Moses giving the New Law on the mountain, just as Moses was given the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. Jesus gives us a new set of laws called the Beatitudes or the attitudes of being not things we should not do, but things we should do by the way we live our lives a positive set of commandments by which to live our lives. Some people even call these Beatitudes blessings because Jesus was trying to help us to see the blessings that we have in our lives, even when we are poor, hungry, persecuted, or trying to make peace. We are people who have been given tremendous gifts and the more we recognize those gifts and use them to serve God and others, the more we will know the fullness of life that God has given to us.
