1 Continuing Ministerial Development Programme Updated 8/9/14 Discipleship Vocation & Ministry Team

2 F OREWORD Scripture is full of examples of men and women learning new ways of being and new skills, and developing their God-given gifts and calling for the sake of God s mission to the whole world. So we should be keen to do the same especially when our diocese offers so much in the way of expertise and enthusiasm. Here is the new, annual menu of CMD opportunities for clergy and other authorised ministers which we hope will feed you intellectually, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. You may like to have some time out to refresh your soul through art or music, investigate the minutiae of legal niceties or think about your preaching so sign up now to avoid disappointment. This menu is primarily for those in authorised ministry. All the diocesan teams offer a range of things for other lay people and members of congregations so we have given links to the website where you can find out more about these but take some time for yourself and look at these (mostly free!) offers. Don t delay in booking to avoid disappointment. Revd Canon Dr Hazel Whitehead Director of Discipleship, Vocation and Ministry 2

This practical course explores how to increase our awareness of how we interact and engage with those around us. We will identify our default styles of communication and consider different practices that will help us communicate more effectively. This will encourage us to give and receive better attention and be fully present no matter what situations we find ourselves in. Phillip taught movement analysis at a number of universities and drama schools and alongside individual coaching in movement and presentation skills. He is the Vicar of All Saints Weston in the north of the Diocese. Jo is Diocesan Adviser for Adult Education and previously worked in higher education and in health education. 22 P REACHING ON CREATION AND HOPE Open to all who preach Tuesday 17 th March am - 4pm St Mary s Church Room, Petworth Road, Chiddingfold GU8 4UF Revd Canon Russell Bowman-Eadie In the current debates about the ecological crisis, two theological themes are of crucial importance to the church: creation and hope. A sense of the world as God s creation is fundamental to developing ways of living which are sustainable and just; at the same time having an appropriate respect for the world. And, when the prospect for the world s sustainable life looks at times bleak, it is essential that we can face the future with hope that is more than a facile optimism but grounded fully in God. In this day s workshop we will explore how we can preach on these themes which creatively link Scripture in ways which provide hope despite and beyond the collapse of inherited cultural certainties. For hope in Christ necessarily entails hope for the world and for God s new world. Russell Bowman-Eadie was until his retirement the Director of Continuing Ministerial Development for the Diocese of Bath and Wells and Canon Treasurer of Wells Cathedral. He is a Fellow and Tutor of the College of Preachers as well as a member of the American Academy of Homiletics and continues to lead preaching workshops in Anglican and Ecumenical settings. 35 S AFEGUARDING TRAINING Safeguarding Training is essential for clergy, LLMs, those with PTO, Safeguarding Officers, Pastoral Assistants, Youth Workers, Children and Family Workers, to name just some key roles, and important for anyone actively engaged in leading and helping with a whole range of church activities. Training should be renewed every three years. The shape of Safeguarding Training has changed. There are now a range of modules available. This is in response to The need for refresher training for people who attended the roll out of the current provision during 2011 A recognition that for some roles more time needs to be spent covering aspects in more detail, to ensure confident leadership in Safeguarding matters The development of Church of England national standards for safeguarding training, currently under development in response to previous inquiries and reflecting the need for confident leadership in Safeguarding matters A recognition that there is a need for easier and more widespread access to Basic Awareness training for volunteers in parishes Module One Module Two Module Three Module Four Module Five Basic Awareness Safeguarding Children and Young People also available as E-Learning Basic Awareness Safeguarding Adults who are Vulnerable Leadership Training Domestic Abuse Safer Ways with Social Media For detailed information on the content of these courses, to find out which ones you should attend, and for a booking form, please go to or safeguarding.training@cofeguildford.org.uk 35

36 M AJOR AWARDS A major award of 1000 per annum is given to a few people each year if they are studying at M level or above. Currently, we have people studying Bonhoeffer, all kinds of spirituality, theology and education and Fresh Expressions. If you wish to discuss ideas you have about further study, please contact Hazel Whitehead For more information about translating your Diploma/Foundation Degree to an Honours Degree please contact Hazel: hazel.whitehead@cofeguildford.org.uk or Revd Dr Steve Summers: steve.summers@cofeguildford.org.uk E XTENDED MINISTERIAL DEVELOPMENT LEAVE EMDL is an opportunity for stipendiary clergy to develop their ministry over a three month period. A limited number of grants is available every year and we plan about eighteen months ahead. Clergy who are eligible will be approached by Hazel Whitehead but please get in touch if you would like to discuss the possibility of having EMDL. Please do not assume you can have EMDL or make arrangements without discussion. S HORTER MINISTERIAL DEVELOPMENT LEAVE Occasionally, there is a good reason why a clergy person needs a four week period of study leave for a particular purpose, e.g. at a point of transition. For a discussion about any of the above please contact Hazel.whitehead@cofeguildford.org.uk or tel
