10 th Sunday after Pentecost July 21 & 24, 2016 The believer prays boldly. The Prayer of the Day beautifully centers worship for this Sunday: God s ears are open; let us then boldly ask for the blessings he promises. Morrison Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod Communion is a part of worship today. Because God speaks of communing together as an expression of unity in faith we practice close communion. All WELS members are welcome to commune with us. Visitors, please speak with the pastor or an elder before communing. Divine Service II (page 28 and following in Christian Worship Supplement) Opening Hymn: Hymn 412 STAND M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Confession M: Dear friends, let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us. C: Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin. For faithless worrying and selfish pride, For sins of habit and sins of choice, For the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do, You should cast me away from your presence forever. O Lord, I am sorry for my sins, Forgive me, for Jesus sake. Absolution (pronouncement of forgiveness) M: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his great mercy, God made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear the word of Christ through his called servant: I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Our mission is to Glorify God as we Gather around the Gospel to help people Grow in the Gospel and Go with the Gospel Welcome! We thank God that you have joined us at worship today. Restrooms are located in the basement. Hearing loop headphones and Large Print Hymnals are available from an usher. If your children need to leave worship, please take them to the basement. A TV broadcasts the service in the basement. Today we gather together in the presence of God. He is present among us in a special way through his Word and Sacrament. We humbly acknowledge our sin and rejoice in the good news of forgiveness through the life and death of Christ. This is the focus of our worship. 1

Prayer of the Day M: Let us pray. 2

O Lord, your ears are always open to the prayers of your humble servants, who come to you in Jesus name. Teach us always to ask according to your will that we may never fail to obtain the blessings you have promised; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. BE SEATED First Lesson: Genesis 18:20-32 There were just certain ways that things were done in the ancient East. This was not it. Abraham s continued pressing of God for concessions would have seemed presumptuous to any earthly master. Yet Abraham was as bold as this when talking to God! On hearing of the Lord s plans for wicked Sodom, Abraham shamelessly presses the Lord to live up to the meaning of his name. Our confidence is the same as we boldly come before our heavenly Father s throne seeking his free and faithful grace. We come, then, knowing that our dear Father will answer our prayer in the way that is best for us. Though the Lord did not find even ten righteous ones living in Sodom, Lot and his daughters were ultimately saved. 20 Then the LORD said, The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous 21 that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know. 22 The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the LORD. 23 Then Abraham approached him and said: Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24 What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it? 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right? 26 The LORD said, If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake. 27 Then Abraham spoke up again: Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes, 28 what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people? If I find forty-five there, he said, I will not destroy it. 29 Once again he spoke to him, What if only forty are found there? He said, For the sake of forty, I will not do it. 30 Then he said, May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there? He answered, I will not do it if I find thirty there. 31 Abraham said, Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there? He said, For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it. 32 Then he said, May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there? He answered, For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it. (NIV) 3

Psalm of the Day: Psalm 6 (p.66 of CW) Second Lesson James 5:13-18 C.S. Lewis said that in prayer God gives us the dignity of causality. Using the example of Elijah s earnest prayers, James encourages a bold prayer life on behalf of others in keeping with the will of the Lord. The righteous are invited to boldly pray for the sick in both body and soul, and God promises to hear those prayer of men made righteous and to respond with forgiveness and healing. Such dignity God gives us! No wonder James can make such a sweeping statement: Is any of you in trouble? He should pray. 13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. 17 Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops. (NIV) Verse of the Day (sung, page 31 CWS) Alleluia! Alleluia! Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the Word of Christ. Alleluia! Alleluia! STAND M: The Gospel according to Luke chapter 11. C: Glory be to you, O Lord. Gospel: Luke 11:1-13 The disciples came to Jesus looking for help in learning to pray. Jesus responds coupling the spiritual-gift petitions of the Lord s Prayer with examples of the boldness with which our Father invites us to ask, seek, and knock. Rooted in the Word, these requests come from hearts of faith that have been taught to seek not only what we need but even what we want. Our confidence is this: we can come again and again before our Father s throne of grace knowing that every good and perfect gift comes from our dear Father to his dear children.. 11 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples. 2 He said to them, When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. 3 Give us each day our daily bread. 4 Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. 4

And lead us not into temptation. 5 Then Jesus said to them, Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; 6 a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him. 7 And suppose the one inside answers, Don t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can t get up and give you anything. 8 I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need. 9 So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 11 Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him! (NIV) M: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to you, O Christ. BE SEATED Hymn of the Day: Hymn 410 Sermon: The Believer Follows Christ Genesis 18:20-32 Followers of Christ Pray Boldly STAND Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. 5

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. BE SEATED Offering During the offering, please sign the friendship register in your pew. Thank you! Sunday at 10:30 worship continues with the Rite of Installation. STAND Prayer of the Church Thursday, Sunday 8:00 a.m. Thursday and Sunday 8:00 a.m. worship continues on page 9 with The Sacrament RITE OF INSTALLATION M: Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ said to his Church: "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." A Christian school is one way we carry out our Lord's command as we let children come to him and do not hinder them, but rather nurture them with the life-giving word of God. We do this trusting God's promise: "Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it." Exhortation to the Teacher-elect M: Dear sister in Christ, Morrison Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church has called you to serve as a teacher. You have been prepared for this ministry by careful instruction in the Word of God so that you carry out your duties in conformity with that Word. As an ambassador of Christ you are to teach the pure doctrine of God s Word, to instruct the young in the way of salvation, and always to have in your heart the spiritual welfare of every soul under your care. You are to devote yourself to the meditation and study of the Scriptures. You are to be an example to others in godliness and Christian living, putting no stumbling block in anyone s path, so that the ministry will not be discredited. 6

You are to speak the truth in love, as the apostle Peter reminds us: Love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. The ability to carry out this calling is not in us, but comes alone from God, as St. Paul reminds the Corinthian Christians: "Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God." The Holy Spirit, who himself has called you to this ministry, will be with you. Promises by the Teacher-elect M: In keeping with the word and will of the Lord, you are about to be installed as a teacher at Morrison Zion Evangelical Lutheran School. I ask you, in the presence of God and this congregation: Are you fully determined to carry out this work according to the grace which God will give? R: I am. M: Do you believe that the canonical books of the Old and New Testament are the inspired Word of God and the only infallible rule of faith and practice? R: I do. M: Do you accept the three Ecumenical Creeds the Apostles, the Nicene, and the Athanasian as faithful testimonies to the truth of the Holy Scriptures, and do you reject all the errors which they condemn? R: I do. M: Do you solemnly promise that all your teaching will conform to the Holy Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions? R: I do. M: Will you give faithful witness to Christ in the world that God s love may be known in all that you do and say? R: I will, and I ask God to help me. M: Almighty God, who has given you the will to do these things, graciously give you the strength and compassion to perform them. 7

Exhortation to the Congregation M: Brothers and sisters in Christ, you have heard the solemn promise given by the teacher you have called. I urge you, therefore, to receive her with joy and to keep in mind always what the Word of God expects of you as members of this congregation: Work together with her for our Lord s kingdom so that by your works of service the Body of Christ might be built up. Help her by your word and example in teaching the young, remembering how the Scriptures urge you to bring up your children in the training and instruction of the Lord. Pray for her continually, that her ministry among you may be greatly blessed and that she may have a cheerful spirit in all her duties. Provide also for her physical needs, for the Lord says, The worker deserves his wages. Honor and love her, as the apostle Peter urges, "Live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble." Promises by the Congregation M: I now ask you, in the presence of God: Are you willing to receive her as a servant of Christ? Will you show her love and honor, and support her with your gifts and prayer? If so, answer: we will, and we ask God to help us. C: We will, and we ask God to help us. M: The almighty and merciful God strengthen and assist you always. The minister addresses the students: M: Students of Morriaon Zion Evangelical Lutheran School, Jesus our Savior has promised eternal life to those who trust in him. Show your love to Jesus by cheerfully obeying your teacher, so that you benefit from her instruction, especially as she teaches you God s saving Word. Give her honor and respect, so that her work will be a joy for her and an eternal blessing to you. Installation Hannah Holzhueter, I install you as a teacher at Morrison Zion Evangelical Lutheran School, in the name of the Father and of the Son ( ) and of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord pour out on you his Holy Spirit for the work committed to you that you may faithfully proclaim the gospel. 8

Prayer M: Let us pray. Almighty God, fountain of all wisdom, we praise and thank you for your goodness in giving us a Lutheran elementary school. Continue to bless our labors here, so that your Word may dwell richly in us and in our children and that your name may be glorified. Give the Holy Spirit to Hannah, and equip her with heavenly wisdom and strength, that she may lead our children to you, and despite any discouragements faithfully carry out the duties of her calling. Move our students to godliness and obedience and cause them to grow through their instruction in your word, so that they may serve you throughout their lives and finally inherit eternal life. Help us at all times to regard our teacher as one whom you have sent, so that we support her in her ministry and pray and work for the welfare of our school. Hear us for Jesus sake. C: (spoken) Amen. M: Go, then, take up the work to which you have been called. The Lord bless you and make you a blessing to many, that you may bear fruit, and that your fruit may remain to eternal life. STAND Preface M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up unto the Lord. THE SACRAMENT M: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. C: It is good and right so to do. M: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who rose from the dead in glorious triumph to bring forgiveness to the world and everlasting life to all who believe. Therefore with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song: 9

Holy, Holy, Holy (sung) Isaiah 6:3; Matthew 21:9 The word hosanna is a Hebrew word that means Lord, save us! The crowds cried Hosanna! at Jesus entrance into Jerusalem, and it is still the cry of Christians today. The Lord has saved us! Hosanna! 1. O holy, holy, holy 2. Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna, mighty Lord! Prayer of Thanksgiving M: Blessed are you, O Lord of heaven and earth. We praise and thank you for sending your Son, Jesus Christ, and we remember the great acts of love through which he has ransomed us from sin, death, and the devil s power. By his incarnation, he became one with us. By his perfect life, he fulfilled your holy will. By his innocent death, he overcame hell. By his rising from the grave, he opened heaven. Invited by your grace and instructed by your Word, we approach your table with repentant and joyful hearts. Strengthen us through Christ s body and blood, and preserve us in the true faith until we feast with him and all his ransomed people in glory everlasting. C: Amen. Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Words of Institution As he speaks the Words of Institution, the minister both proclaims the words of Jesus to the congregation and sets apart the bread and wine for the Lord s use. M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. 10

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen.
