1 Only One Thing Is Needed: Glorify October 9 & 12, 2014 Martha chose service. Mary chose sitting at Jesus feet. Martha was rebuked for focusing on herself and not on The One Thing Needed. Today God reminds us that if we seek to glorify or praise him we are to do it on his terms, not ours. We have failed individually and as a congregation to always give The One Thing Needed top priority in our lives. We often set our own desires and purposes above God s. In worship today we join together to repent of this sin. We then hear God proclaim the Gospel of forgiveness to us and rejoice. It renews and refocuses us on God so that we can glorify him in our lives. Communion is a part of worship today. Because God speaks of communing together as an expression of unity in faith we practice close communion. All WELS members are welcome to commune with us. Visitors, please speak with the pastor or an elder before communing. Corporate Confession and Absolution God encourages his children to confess sins (1 John 1:9). He also gives examples of how they have confessed. His apostle St. James exhorts, Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed (James 5:16). As we begin our special Appeal worship, we confess that like Martha we have often been distracted by many things. Personal likes, dislikes, ideas, and preferences have pushed the One Thing Needed to the background. We ask god to forgive us. Then, empowered by the forgiveness, we recommit ourselves to focus on the One Thing Needed as the motivation to glorify the Lord. REMAIN SEATED M: In the name of the father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. M: In Holy Baptism, God gives us the Holy Spirit, who works in us both the desire to throw off the slavery of sin and the power to live a new life. He is present among us in a special way through his Word and Sacrament. We humbly acknowledge our sin and rejoice in the good news of forgiveness through the life and death of Christ. This is the focus of our worship.

2 Prayer M: Let us pray. Father of mercies and God of all comfort, you are our strength every morning, our salvation in times of distress. With contrite hearts and troubled spirits we come to you for healing and help. Create in us pure hearts, and wash away all our sins in the blood of your Son, Jesus Christ. Restore to us the joy of your salvation, and refresh us with your Holy Spirit, that we may declare your praise and teach your saving ways, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Hymn: Hymn 738 Lesson: The prophet points Israel and us to the One Thing Needed. The people disobeyed God. They did not always glorify him. There was no defense for their sins. But God acted, for his own sake to take away their sin. The One Thing Needed is what God does for us, not our feeble, inadequate, or even disobedient acts of service. 18 Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. 19 See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. 20 The wild animals honor me, the jackals and the owls, because I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen, 21 the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise. 22 Yet you have not called on me, Jacob, you have not wearied yourselves for me, Israel. 23 You have not brought me sheep for burnt offerings, nor honored me with your sacrifices. God, compassionate Father and friend, remember not our sins but rather remember your love and mercy. Relieve our distress and satisfy us with eternal peace, through your son, Jesus Christ our Lord. STAND Gospel: Martha sought to glorify Jesus by serving him a meal. A good choice. But somewhere along the line her focus went off of Jesus and onto herself. Mary was just sitting there. She was doing all the work! Jesus rebukes her and tells her that it is always better to choose to focus on The One thing Needed. 3

4 38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, Lord, don t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me! 41 Martha, Martha, the Lord answered, you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her. (NIV) M: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to you, O Christ! C: Almighty God, merciful Father, I confess to you that I have not loved you with all my heart. In what I have done and left undone, I have pursued my ways instead of your ways. I have not loved my brothers and sisters as myself. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. I am truly sorry for my sins. I repent of them. I beg for your mercy, O Lord. 5 M: Forgive us for the sake of Jesus Christ who suffered and died for us. C: Cleanse me from my sins. Release me from my guilt. Grant me your holy Spirit to amend my sinful life. At the gathering you will receive information about our capital appeal and have the opportunity to ask any questions you might have about the appeal and our ministry plans. Refreshments and childcare will be available. Each gathering will meet in the church basement. We will meet at 9:15 and 11:45 a.m. this Sunday. We will also meet at 8:15 p.m. this Thursday, October 16. We will also meet at 9:15 and 11:45 a.m. next Sunday, October 19. A gathering should last about an hour. You are invited: Next November (2015) Pastor Daniel Cole from St. John Lutheran Church, Maribel (WELS) will be hosting a trip to Israel, including Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Nazareth, Galilee, and many other places where Jesus walked and talked during this ministry on this earth. A trip like this can give a great deal of perspective to the historical accounts we find in God's Word. Gary Pufahl, pastor at Christ, Big Bend, Wis. Pufahl is one of several Northwestern Publishing House (NPH) customers who were featured in a new video that highlights the impact NPH has on those it serves. Congregations recently received a copy of this video that shares how God works through NPH, the synod s publishing house since "NPH remains the trusted publisher for WELS," says Mr. Bill Ziche, NPH president. "We re working hard to fulfill that and to make sure we re meeting people s needs." NPH has called two new editors to continue to look at new ways to address the spiritual needs of people today. Rev. Dan Schroeder will be working to refresh existing Bible studies and to create new ones that are relevant in today s world. In a newly established position, Rev. Christopher Doerr will be focusing on creating resources to reach newer Christians within WELS as well as those who may or may not be Christian outside WELS. Using electronic means to distribute its products is another way NPH is looking to reach a wider audience as well as meet the needs of its longtime customers. Over 110 new, bestselling, and classic NPH book titles are available as e-books, and Meditations, a collection of daily devotions and prayers, is now available as an Apple app. Since its release in March, more than 16,500 people from 138 countries have downloaded the Meditations app to take advantage of this daily dose of God s Word. Besides creating new products, NPH is working to let people know about its wide array of materials that is already available. Congregations and schools can host book fairs in which NPH will ship a customizable Glorify Gather Grow Go WELS News selection of materials to the church, literally bringing the Milwaukee store to any location. NPH itself is hosting weekly and monthly events at its Milwaukee store to reach out in its community. Whether [our neighbors] are church members or not, we have an opportunity to reach them with the Word through our ministry at NPH, says Ziche. A refreshed logo, with a cross and Bible in the forefront, demonstrates NPH s resolve to carry out its mission to deliver biblically sound Christ-centered resources within WELS and beyond. The updated logo symbolizes what NPH is doing, says Ziche. We re staying true to our roots in what we do and true to our mission and calling, but at the same time we re making sure that we re fresh and relevant in today s world.
