2 Welcome! New parishioners are asked to register by calling or visiting the parish office or by speaking to one of the parish staff. WHY A CATHOLIC CHRISTIAN SHOULD BE A REGISTERED PARISHIONER 1. The precepts of the Church explained that: we need to belong to a parish (your parish is the Church in the City where you are domiciled) and to contribute to its support. Everyone should do this (Canon 107). 2. To identify yourself with a worshipping community of faith. Salvation comes to us by God in community. Religion is not meant to be individualistic. Membership in a parish community is the norm. 3. To allow the priest of the parish to know you so that Letters of Recommendation can be given when needed. (Sponsorship/certificates) RECTORY HOURS MONDAY: 8:00 3:00 PM TUESDAY: 9:30 AM 12:30 PM WEDNESDAY: 8:00 AM 2:00PM THURSDAY: 8:00 AM 2:00 PM FRIDAY: 9:30 AM 12:30 PM SATURDAY AND SUNDAY CLOSED STEWARDSHIP A WAY OF LIFE August 9, 2015 $ August 7, 2016 $ COUNTERS THIS WEEK: Cathy DeVito & Robyn Nevins THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10 Jeremiah urged the people of Jerusalem to surrender to the enemy. This angered the princes, who then requested that Jeremiah be put to death. The king allowed the princes to leave him in a cistern without food or water. But after Ebed Melech pleaded for Jeremiah's life, the king decided to free him. Second Reading: Hebrews 12:1-4 This letter to the Hebrews inspires all Christians to persevere, in spite of the trials they may face. Jesus endured much suffering and was rewarded by God. Despite our struggles, we must remember Jesus' ability to endure and maintain strong faith in him. Gospel: Luke 12:49-53 Jesus tells his disciples that his message will not bring peace to the earth. Instead, even families will become sharply divided because some members will embrace him, while others condemn him. Monday NOVENA TO OUR MOTHER OF PERPETUAL HELP Every Wednesday at 8:30 am, followed with the Holy Mass Vigil: 1 Chr 15:3-4, 15-16, 16:1-2; 1 Cor 15:54b-57; Lk 11:27-28 Day: Rv 11:19a, 12:1-6a, 10ab; 1 Cor 15:20-27; Lk 1:3956 Tuesday Ez 28:1-10; Mt 19:23-30 Wednesday Ez 34:1-11; Mt 20:1-16 Thursday COME AND JOIN US Ez 36:23-28; Mt 22:1-14 Friday Ez 37:1-14; Mt 22:34-40 Please remember in your prayers, Virginia Cooney Meeks, who entered into eternal rest. Lawrence Scala 8:45 AM LITURGICAL LIFE Please pray for the sick of the Parish: Brent Bassin, Dylan Flinchem, Herbert Grobe, Emma Scannelli, Nancy Smith, William Stelmach We often hear complaints of disappointment: When I started to serve the Lord, I thought things would go well since God will bless me. How come I am beset by problems now that I am given service? I m trying to be good now and troubles come my way. These experiences are rife so they cannot be taken in isolated cases. Perhaps the Gospel can change this outlook. Jesus tells his disciples, who also may have shared this misunderstanding: Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division (v5). And he describes division within a family, the most intimate unit in society. Why is this so? Because the message of Jesus is most uncompromising and most universal. It is like a devouring fire, eating up and transforming everything along its path. It is uncompromising. Either you are with him or against him. Jesus accepts no fence-sitters or mere onlookers. He will tell the Christians of Laodices: I know your works; I know that you are either cold or hot. I wish you were either cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth (Rv3:15-16). Many people, unfortunately, are uncommitted. They stay neutral and keep a safe distance. They are content with the minimum-in praying, attending Mass on Sundays, and confession once a year. They avoid harming others but do not go out of their way to help people in need. And they think they are good Christians. Jesus does not except mediocrity. He gives his all and he demands our all, and best! Jesus message is most universal, open to all. The people of Jeremiah s time were banking on the fact that God s temple was in Jerusalem and so the city would not fall to the Babylonians. Were they not the chosen people of God? Jeremiah preached that unless they repented and left their sinful ways, the enemy would overrun them. For this message the people took offense and threw Jeremiah into the muddy well to dispatch him. He was considered a troublemaker for standing on the universal call to repentance. Also in our times mediocre people could not stand someone who decides to serve the Lord more fully. They pull him down and find fault with his good intentions. Let us not be surprised when problems come our way once we decide to commit ourselves more fully to the Lord. This is part of our dying that brings about new life. 365 Days with the Lord published by the Society of St. Paul) Automated Giving: Our Automated Giving program awareness campaign ( ParishPay ) continues. Please familiarize yourself with the details of this convenient alternative to giving via collection basket. See for for details.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us, Conscience is a judgment of reason whereby the human person recognizes the moral quality of a concrete act that he is going to perform, is in the process of performing or has already completed. In all he says and does, man is obliged to follow faithfully what he knows to be just and right (n. 1778). From this definition it emerges that the moral conscience, to be able to judge human conduct rightly, above all must be based on the solid foundation of truth, that is, it must be enlightened to know the true value of actions and the solid criteria for evaluation. Therefore, it must be able to distinguish good from evil, even where the social environment, pluralistic culture and superimposed interests do not help it do so (Address to the Pontifical Academy for Life, February 24, 2007).
