PRELUDE ANNOUNCEMENTS WELCOME INTROIT: Choir THE UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA St. Paul s Pastoral Charge April 1, 2018 Easter Sunday Lighting of Christ Candle One: As we light the Christ Candle we celebrate He is Lord, He is Lord He has risen from the dead. And He is Lord. All: Every knee shall bow Every tongue confess That Jesus Christ is Lord! GOD GATHERS US TOGETHER CALL TO WORSHIP (responsively) One: Why are you weeping? All: We came seeking joy, but we are shrouded in darkness. One: Whom are you looking for? All: We are looking for Jesus, but the tomb is empty. One: Set your mind on things above and hear the heavenly hosts: Christ has risen! All: Christ has risen? One: Christ has risen indeed! All: Thanks be to God! OPENING HYMN Low in the grave he lay, Jesus my Savior, waiting the coming day, Jesus my Lord! Refrain: Up from the grave he arose; with a mighty triumph o'er his foes; he arose a victor from the dark domain, and he lives forever, with his saints to reign. He arose! He arose! Christ arose! Vainly they watch his bed, Jesus my Savior, vainly they seal the dead, Jesus my Lord! Death cannot keep its prey, Jesus my Savior; he tore the bars away, Jesus my Lord! Up From the Grave He Arose 1
PRAYER OF APPROACH Living God, rejoicing in this day of resurrection, we have come to celebrate the strength of your love - a love that triumphs even over death. As we rejoice in the miracle of your incarnate love, we thank you for the opportunity to encounter the Risen Christ here in our midst. Amen! CHILDREN S CHOIR - Item Time with the Children Prayer CHILDREN S HYMN: VU # 340 Jesus Friend of Little Children (vs. 1) 1. Jesus, friend of little children, let me be one too; take my hand, and ever keep me close to you. PRAYER OF CONFESSION One: Mighty God, You are the author of life, And the power of our salvation. All: When our strength fails, lift us and carry us onto the path of faithful living. One: When, with sinful ways and closed hearts, we reject your salvation, All: Set our minds on You, that we may return to your loving presence and recognize Your guiding light. One: When, with fearful souls and angry spirits, we choose death and despair, All: Raise us up to new life, that we may be children of the Resurrection, the Easter people You see in us. Amen ASSURANCE OF PARDON One: There is Good News everywhere. There is nothing lost that cannot be found, no dark place where light cannot shine, no awful past that cannot lead to a bright future. You are God s beloved; you are a child of the resurrection. Live into the hope and promise of Christ, knowing you are forgiven and loved. All: AMEN. In the name of the risen Christ, we are forgiven! Glory to God! WE HEAR GOD S WORD PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION SCRIPTURES: Old Testament: Isaiah 25:6-9 pg. 652 Psalm 118 Part 1, 2, 3 and Refrain Pg. 837 VU Part One (1-4) Refrain: hallelujah! 2
Part Two (14-18) Let Israel now say: 'God's love endures for ever.' Let the house of Aaron say: 'God's love endures for ever.' Let those who fear God say: 'God's love endures for ever.' R Refrain: hallelujah! God is my strength and my song; God has become my salvation. There are shouts of joy and deliverance in the tents of the righteous. The right hand of God does mighty things; the right hand of God raises up. The right hand of God does mighty things. I shall not die, but live; and I shall proclaim what God has done. God indeed punished me, but did not give me over to death. R Refrain: hallelujah! Part Three (19-24) Open to me the gates of the temple, that I may enter and give thanks to God. This is the gate of God; through it the righteous shall enter. I thank you for you have answered me; you have become my salvation. The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This is God's doing, marvellous in our eyes. This is the day that God has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it! R Refrain: hallelujah! 3
Gospel: Mark 16:1-8 pg. 54 MINISTRY OF SONG THE CHOIR MESSAGE: Easter Sunday OFFERTORY SENTENCE Offering WE RESPOND TO GOD S WORD Dedication of Offering: VU # 173 Thine Is The Glory (vs. 2) 2. Lo, Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb! Lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom. Refrain: Let the church with gladness hymns of triumph sing, for the Lord now liveth: death hath lost its sting. R Thine is the glory, risen, conquering Son: endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won. OFFERTORY PRAYER (Unison) You, O God, are the Easter One. You are the holy source of resurrection. You are the dancing spirit of life. We offer these gifts in gratitude for hope returned, for the mystery of your grace, and for the promise of resurrection. Amen. Hymn VU # 155 Jesus Christ is Risen Today (vs. 1&2) 1. Jesus Christ is risen today, hallelujah! our triumphant holy day, hallelujah! who did once, upon the cross, hallelujah! suffer to redeem our loss. 2. Hymns of praise then let us sing hallelujah! unto Christ, our heavenly King, hallelujah! who endured the cross and grave, hallelujah! sinners to redeem and save. 4
Affirmation of Faith The New Creed (in unison) We are not alone, We live in God s world. We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, To reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God. We are called to be the Church: to celebrate God s presence, to live with respect in Creation, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks, be to God. (Responsively) THE LORD S SUPPER The Lord is with you! And also with you! Lift up your voices to speak of this great love! We lift them up in joyful acclamation! It is a good and pleasant thing, joyful and salutary, always and everywhere, to give you thanks and praise, Lord God, Ever-living, Ever-Blessed, Almighty, All-loving. Through Jesus Christ, your only Son our Lord, You created all things and made us in your image. And when we had fallen into sin, You gave him to be our Saviour. He shared our human nature and lived a fully human life. He suffered rejection and condemnation, and died on the cross. You raised him up from the dead, and you exalted him to the glory of you right hand. 5
Where he reigns forever as priest and king And makes intercession for us. In witness of his glory and honour, you poured out the Holy Spirit, Building up many people into one body, Making us living members of your Holy Church, And enabling us to stand before you to sing your praises And to celebrate your mighty acts. And especially at this time, we rejoice that after His most glorious resurrection and appearance to all His apostles, He ascended to heaven in their sight, to prepare a place for us, that where He is, there we might also ascend and reign with Him in glory. Therefore, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we join in the hymn of everlasting praise. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed are you, Lord God, King of the Universe, And blessed is your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; Who on the night he was betrayed Took bread into his holy hands And looking up to heaven, gave thanks, broke it And gave it to his disciples saying, This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, This is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for everyone. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. And so, on this day of resurrection, We raise our voices to proclaim this timeless truth: Christ has died. Christ is risen! Christ will come again! Pour out your Holy Spirit on us, your people, and on these gifts of bread and cup. Make us lovers and tellers of your word. Make us healers and bestowers of your grace. And make us one body in Jesus Christ. All glory and honor is yours, Almighty God, now and for all time! Amen. 6
THE ACTION OF THE BREAD AND WINE The bread we break is a sharing in the Body of Christ. Amen. The cup of blessing, which we bless, is a sharing in the Blood of Christ. Amen. Though we are many, we are one Body because we share in the one loaf and partake of the same drink. Let us Pray. Lord, we come to your Table, trusting in your mercy and not in any goodness of our own. We are not worthy even to gather up the crumbs under your Table: but it is your nature always to have mercy, and on that we depend. So feed us with the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, your Son, that we may for ever live in him and he is us. Amen. SHARING IN COMMUNION PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Gracious God, we give you thanks for satisfying our hungry hearts with this holy meal shared in the Spirit with Jesus, your Son, our Lord. Strengthened and refreshed, we go from here to reveal your love and your righteousness in the world. This we pray through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen IN JESUS NAME WE GO TO SERVE Closing Hymn: Christ the Lord Is Risen Today Medley Christ The Lord is Risen today, All creation join to say; Raise your joys and triumphs high; Sing, O heavens, and earth reply: Lives again our glorious King: Where, O death, is now your sting? Once He died, our souls to save: Where your victory, O grave? 7
Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne: Hark, how the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own! Awake, my soul, and sing of Him who died for thee, And hail Him as thy matchless King through all eternity. Crown Him the Lord of life, who triumphed o er the grave, And rose victorious in the strife for those he came to save. His glories now we sing who died and rose on high, Who died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die. All hail the power of Jesus Name! Let angels prostrate fall; Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown Him Lord of all; Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown Him, crown Him Lord of all! And crown Him Lord of all! COMMISSIONING AND BENEDICTION (responsively) One: Christ is with us in this place. All: Alleluia! One: Christ goes with us into the world. All: Alleluia! One: Go now in peace. Christ is risen! Risen indeed! All: We go in peace Alleluia! POSTLUDE ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ We welcome all who join us in worship.
