Jesus said, "Behold I stand at the door and knock, if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him..." (Revelation 3:20a) God will save you. Just talk to Him. He loves you. Then the LORD said to the woman, What is this you have done? And the woman said, The serpent deceived me, and I ate. Genesis 3:11-13 After man and woman sinned against God, the first recorded words from their mouths were an argument in defense of their righteousness in the form of blameshifting. Adam blamed God for Eve and blamed Eve for giving him the fruit. Well done, Adam, a double blame shift. And Eve, she goes for and pioneers the defense that has stood through the ages: She blames the serpent the devil made me do it! Like it or not, blameshifting merely serves to expose to us the selfrighteousness that resides in our hearts. It distracts the exposing of our sin by exposing the perceived sin of another. This can be done in a variety of ways Oh Yeah! Well, you ; At least I don t ; and If you hadn t done, I wouldn t have are a few of the more common tactics that we employ to defend our righteousness and place ourselves above our accusers in the selfrighteous pecking order. The bottom line is simply this: Adam chose to sin and Eve chose to sin. Adam is responsible for his sin and needs to take ownership for it and Eve is responsible for her sin and needs to take ownership for it. God wasn t fooled, nor was He distracted by their blaming of others. Each is punished according to their deeds. Although we may be able to throw each other off track, I don t think God is fooled or derailed by our own attempts at blame shifting either. Maybe, that s the most important thing to consider. When I reflect on my own attempts of blame shifting, I find myself frequently asking the question, Dan, why didn t you just take ownership of your sin and let the matter be settled? I am greatly comforted in knowing that I have a Savior who is ready to hear my confessions and delights in cleansing me of all my unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). We are fallen sinners saved by grace and in need of that grace every day. We shouldn t be surprised when our sin rears its ugly head, exposes itself and others point this out to us. Now, here s the big question for us: When our sin is exposed, is that exposure for the sake of its destruction or its defense? Do I go to the throne of grace to find the mercy of God s forgiveness and His cleansing grace or to the throne of self to defend it at all cost? Wow, our blame shifting actually sounds foolish when put in the light of truth! Pastor Dan My brother writes an internet column called The Right Rendition. He comments on Christian life, cultural philosophies, politics, and various other items. He wrote the following this week. I thought it was worth passing on to you. What Are You Putting In Your Bucket? There's an old manuscript that has this in it: "Give careful thought to what you're doing: You work hard, but have little; you eat, but are never filled; you drink, but you're still thirsty; you're never satisfied. You buy nice clothes, but they are never enough, and you never have enough money because your pockets have holes in them." I read a story about a man who was inspired by a children's book about buckets. In so many words it said WE are responsible for what we put into our bucket. So, he decided to work on one of his pressing needs: More patience. He went to the hardware store and bought a metal bucket. He said he looked like a dairy farmer, but he carried that bucket with him wherever he went, enduring the questions and comments it brought: "Do you have a bladder problem?" "Did you lose your cow?" "Expecting a flood?" But he persevered, and soon learned that what he needed-- more patience-- was HIS choice to have. It wasn't other people or things that caused his impatience, it was his own attitude toward-- well, everything. Life doesn't work the way we want it to-- it will ALWAYS go in a way we don't want or can't predict. The way we react to life is OUR decision. If we continue to fill our buckets with those things that don't really matter, then the people and things around us won't matter, either. If we fill our buckets with care and compassion and patience and love and understanding, we will soon learn what is really important and what will last through the ups and downs of life. We learn not only how to be a better person, but we learn how to be content with what we have. What are you putting in your bucket? It is ALWAYS our decision to choose to act in a Christ-like way. Gal 5:14-18 sums this up very well. Pastor Mike

3 Notes From the Church Office Girls and Boys Camps at Camp Leeper are all over for this summer and they went well. Girls Camp had more campers than ever and the girls had a great time. Their theme was In the Garden and followed that theme throughout camp. Boys Camp also had a good group and their theme was I ve Got Your Back. I heard a message from one of the young volunteers out there and it was a very good message that we all need to take to heart. It was about thinking of others because we all tend to be thinking about ourselves too much. As the Bible says: Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interest of others. (Phil. 2:4) This scripture expresses the boys camp theme of I ve Got Your Back. July was a month of ministry to children. We are so thankful for all the camp leaders, teachers, and helpers that influence our children to come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. We don t always see the results of our efforts but God knows and what a great thing to be a part of God s plan and knowing that we may see these kids one day in Heaven because of ministry at Camp Leeper. Vacation Bible School is being planned as this newsletter is being put together. The theme is God of Wonders and Pastor Josh is having several meetings with workers to prepare for our VBS. We are so thankful for Pastor Josh, Chasity, and their family. We can t wait to see what God is going to do in our VBS this year. The Associational Hymn Sing will be at Wyaconda on August 6, at 7 P.M. There are other things coming up in August on our calendar that is in this newsletter so be sure and look it over. School will also be starting and the ministerial alliance is doing the backpack ministry and a lunch for teachers so check with the church office on how you can help in some of our upcoming ministries. Remember Jesus said in John 15:4 "As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me." To abide in Christ means that we stay connected to Him and just as the sap flows through a vine, the Holy Spirit flows through us. He does the fruit bearing. We concentrate on our personal relationship with Him and allow the Holy Spirit to flow through us so that He can use us and produce fruit. Pam Blaine On July 10 th we held our annual chicken dinner here at the church, we had 17 in attendance. We missed the chicken that Verlee brought each year, but J s Foods fried chicken was good too. Everyone brought sides to go with the fried chicken. Our August meeting will be on August 14 th at 2:00 PM and we will be hosting the birthday party at the Scotland County Care Center for those who have birthdays in August. We need to bring cookies, or cup cakes (with no paper). We also need 2 gallons of ice cream and juice to serve twenty to twentyfive residents. 4 Impact Student Ministries School Starts on August 20 and that means our children and youth ministries will be starting very soon. To kick off the school year, SCMA and FCA will be hosting the Vespers Service for the Antique Fair and Tiger Tailgate. All are welcome to attend this event on Wednesday, August 22 at 6:00 PM on the square. Don t forget to bring your lawn chair. On Wednesday, August 29, Impact Kids and Impact 180 will kick off the year. As usual, the church will be hopping at 5:30 every Wednesday during the school year. High School Impact Youth will also begin that evening at 6:45 pm. All ladies are invited to this small group study. This will begin on Tuesday, August 28 at Melinda Burrus s home. This group has a light supper at 6:00 PM, followed by prayer time and then the study. It s a wonderful time of fellowship and worship. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. See Melinda for directions to her home. Last Month the men of the church had a Men s Night Fellowship in Burlington, Iowa. They started out the evening at a BBQ joint and then attended a Burlington Bees game. It was the hottest day of the year, but they all survived and lived to tell the tales. Talk with Pastor Josh about how you can serve in these ministries. These are critical as we serve the children, youth and parents of our community.

Please plan to attend the closing program on Friday at 7:00 PM. You will be such an encouragement and witness to the families of the children attending VBS.
