1 First News & Notes Trees of the Bible In Genesis we read how God creates man, and then immediately makes all kinds of trees to grow out of the ground, including the Tree of Life The Bible is full of trees. In fact, more than 30 kinds are named in scripture. Noah used gopher wood to build the ark. Abraham and Sarah entertained angels unaware under oak trees. Elijah escaped into the wilderness and rested under a broom tree. It was under a palm tree that Deborah, prophet and judge, dispensed justice. The Ark of the covenant was made from an acacia tree. Solomon s Photo credit: temple Meggan was built Douglas using cedars of Lebanon. That wee little man Zacchaeus climbed a sycamore tree so he could glimpse Jesus passing by. In the Bible, trees symbolize strength, power, glory, wealth, honour, and restoration. The dove brings Noah an olive branch as a sign that the flood has receded and dry land has re-appeared. The psalmist uses a tree as a metaphor for a life well lived. God s providence is shown through trees, which provide shelter for animals, nesting places for the birds, and fruit as sustenance for humans. God s judgment is depicted in the cutting down of a tree. Beginning in Genesis, a relationship is created that will continue through the pages of history: God, trees, and humans. And the Bible s story of salvation begins and ends with a tree the Cross on which Jesus died. As the old hymn says, O can it be, upon a tree, the Saviour died for me. My soul is thrilled; my heart is filled, to think He died for me. Busy Servants What do hand-digging dandelions, carrying hymn books, organizing bookshelves, taking a small child on your lap, and organizing a shared lunch have in common? 4 May 13 was a busy day in Arkona. 50 Days for Girls kits were finished up under the guidance of Nancy Gosnek. Our area s goal is to make 100 kits for this project. Becky Woolvett and others are working on the next 50 during sewing evenings at Wyoming Baptist. 4

6 KIPP (Kids Intercessory Prayer Partners) Prayer Cards have been prepared for our First Kids. Please take one or two and pray for these young ones. You are welcome to get to know them better possibly sit with them in church, send them cards, find out their interests. And PRAY for them.
