3 Home Group Study Series: Jesus in the OT Sunday, June 10th Genesis 3:1-15 Sermon Review Question: As you reflect on last weekend s sermon, what one principle or insight stands out as being particularly helpful, or difficult to grasp? Remember the context: Genesis Chapter 3 take us to the garden and tells us one of the most famous stories of all time; the tempting of Adam and Eve. It depicts the entrance of sin in the human race and the severity of the consequences of man s disobedience. But beyond man s sinfulness and the penalties it demands, there is also the revelation of the grace of Grace Orality: Hearing God s Word Together (Bibles Closed). 4 Questions: Head Absorbing God s Word: 1. Verse 1 starts by referring to God as the Lord God. This was common place in the Old Testament but satan refers to the Lord God it was simply God. Why might this be? What does it tell us? FYI: Lord usually translates adonai, which is the equivalent of ruler or master. God usually translates elohim, which appears to mean something like "the mighty one." Heart Accepting God s Word: 2. Verse 6 is a great example of temptation. After reading this verse, what place do you think deception plays in it? Give an example from your own life where you were tempted and deceived. Hands Applying God s Word: 3. Verse 8 mentions one of the greatest consequences to our sin which is the desire to hide from God. Knowing this how do you think being in community can help with this? 3

6 Home Group Study Series: Jesus in the OT Sunday, June 17th Genesis 49:8-10 Sermon Review Question: As you reflect on last weekend s sermon, what one principle or insight stands out as being particularly helpful, or difficult to grasp? Remember the context: Genesis 49 details the blessings and predictions that Jacob gives each of his sons. He tells them that they will become a great nation and that they will become the 12 tribes of Israel and each son would receive a blessing appropriate to himself. His prophesies to his sons were not his own, but were shown to him by the Lord. Orality: Hearing God s Word Together (Bibles Closed). 7 Questions: Head Absorbing God s Word: 1. Verses 8-10 depict Jacob s words to his son Judah (who is the grandson of Abraham). Knowing that Jesus is referred to as the Lion of Judah what do these verses tell us about Jesus? Reread them and tell us what you see. HINT: Kingship Heart Accepting God s Word: 2. 9 Home Group Study Series: Jesus in the OT Sunday, June 24th Exodus 12:1-16 Sermon Review Question: As you reflect on last weekend s sermon, what one principle or insight stands out as being particularly helpful, or difficult to grasp? Remember the context: In this chapter of Exodus, we see that God is set to follow through with His promise of killing every firstborn Egyptian child. Even all firstborn princes and baby cows were included in the slaughter. In order to avoid this judgment, God told the Israelites through Moses to cover their doors with the blood of a sacrificed lamb. Orality: Hearing God s Word Together (Bibles Closed). Upon what basis is the lamb chosen? (Ex. 12:5) What does this tell you about God? 3. Reread verses How does this picture model what Christ did for us? Hands Applying God s Word: 4. Now put verses 7-13 back into context. How much faith do you think it took for them to follow exactly what they were being told? Would it of been a struggle? If so how does this compare to those we are sharing Christ with? 9

13 Questions: This week is a bit different. Please review and discuss the different parts of the Priestly garments but first read the text connect to each part (as listed below). When done answer the one main question at the bottom. THE EPHOD Exodus 28:6-12 The ephod was a shoulder-piece covering the back and reaching under the arms, kept in place by the two shoulder straps The shoulder, moreover, is symbolical of power. Typifies Christ in His high priestly ministry. Christ, the High Priest bears His people upon His shoulders, the place of strength and seat of power. The shoulders also speak of carrying a burden, Christ, the High Priest carries the whole burden alone. THE BREASTPLATE Exodus 28:13-30 Known as the breastplate of judgment represents the high priest as the spokesman of God, at the same time that he is the affectionate intercessor for Israel for each tribe and each member of it. Over the ephod the High Priest wore a breastplate or breastplate of judgement which was a pouch made of woven material. On the front of the breastplate were fastened twelve precious stones in four rows of three. On each of these stones were engraved the name of one of the tribes of Israel: URIM AND THUMMIN Exodus 28:30 It is not known for certain exactly what the Urim and Thummim really were, but it is thought that they may have been two precious stones, possibly gems, which were identical in shape. One or the other could be drawn from the pouch in order to provide a yes or no answer in seeking the Lord for guidance. 12

14 THE ROBE Exodus 28:31-36 Under the ephod the High Priest wore a robe of blue. Golden bells were attached to the hem and pomegranates made from material hung between the bells. The pomegranates speak of fruitfulness (abundant seeds) and are symbols of the Word of God as sweet and pleasant spiritual food. The sound of the bells could be heard when Aaron went into the Holy Place before the Lord, and the listening people would know that he had not been struck dead in God's presence, but that his offering on their behalf had been accepted by God. THE CROWN Exodus 28:36-38 On his head the High Priest wore a turban of fine linen which was bound around the head in coils. On the front of the forehead, attached by a blue lace ribbon, there was the golden plate engraved HOLINESS TO THE LORD. QUESTION: What parallels do you see here that reflect Jesus Christ? Is there anything you ve not noticed before? 13
