1 1 2 10/19/08 Ex As we continue in our study of the tabernacle, we come to the priestly service, for they were the only ones who could do the service of God. They were the mediators and go betweens, for man before God. 28:1-43 The priest and their garments. 28:1-5 The priesthood. 1) Moses was commanded by God to set in order the priest office. vs. 1 a) Moses was to take Aaron and his sons from among the children of Israel, for the purpose of ministering to Yahweh as priests. vs. 1a-d b) Their names are recorded, Aaron and his sons: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. vs. 1e-i 2) The garments of Aaron. vs. 2 a) They were to make holy garments for Aaron. vs. 2a b) The description is two-fold. vs. 2b 1)) For glory kabowd honor and splendor 2)) For beauty tiph arah excellent rank. 3) Moses was to gather the best craftsmen. vs. 3 a) Moses was to speak to all who are gifted artisans, whom Yahweh had filled with the spirit of wisdom. vs. 3- b b) The purpose was that they make Aaron s garments, to consecrate him, that he may minister to Yaheweh as priest. vs. 3c-e 4) The articles of clothing to be made for Aaron. vs. 4 a) A breastplate. vs. 4a-b b) An ephod. vs. 4c c) A robe. vs. 4d d) A skillfully woven tunic. vs. 4e d) A turban. vs. 4f e) A sash. vs. 4g f) The purpose is repeated, the holy garments were to be made for Aaron and his sons, that he may minister to Yahweh as priest. vs. 4h-i 5) The materials for the garments. vs. 5 a) Gold, blue and scarlet thread. vs. 5a-d b) Fine linen, vs. 5e 28:6-14 The ephod. 1) The materials of the ephod were to be of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine woven linen, artistically worked. vs. 6
2 3 4 2) The ephod was to have two shoulder straps joined at its two edges, and so it shall be joined together, at the top of the shoulders. vs. 7 3) The ephod was to have intricately woven band was to be of the same workmanship, made of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine woven linen. vs. 8 4) The ephod was to have two precious stones to join the ephod at the shoulders. vs a) They were to take two onyx stones and engrave on them the names of the sons of Israel. vs. 9 b) Six of their names on one stone, and six names on the other stone, in order of their birth. vs. 10 c) The work was to be done by an engraver in stone, like the engravings of a signet on the two stones with the names of the sons of Israel, in settings of gold. vs. 11 d) The placing and purpose of the stones. vs. 12 1)) The two stones were to be place on the shoulders of the ephod as memorial stones for the sons of Israel. vs. 12a 2)) The purpose was that Aaron as the nation s representative High Priest would bear their names before the LORD on his two shoulders as a memorial, bearing the burden of the nation, a type of Jesus Christ. vs. 12b e) They were to also make settings of gold and two chains of pure gold like braided cords, and fasten the braided chains to the settings. vs :15-29 The breastplate. 1) They were to make the breastplate of judgment artistically woven as the workmanship of the ephod. vs. 15a-b 2) The material were of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine woven linen, as the ephod. vs. 15c-g 3) The breastplate was to be doubled into a square: a span long by a spa wide, about six inches. vs. 16 4) They were to set four rows of precious stones. vs a) The first row was to be a sardius, a topaz, and an emerald. vs. 17 b) The second row was to be a turquoise, a sapphire, and a diamond. vs. 18 c) The third row, was to be a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst. vs, 19 d) The fourth row was to be a beryl, an onyx, and a jasper. vs. 20a-d
3 5 6 e) They were to be set in gold settings. vs. 20e 5) The stones were to have the names of the sons of Israel, twelve according to their names, like the engravings of a signet. vs. 21 6) Chains were to be made for the breastplate at the end, like braided cords of pure gold. vs. 22 7) There was to be two rings of gold for the breastplate, and put the two rings on the two ends of the breastplate. vs. 23 8) Then two braided chains of gold in the two rings were to be made at the ends of the breastplate. vs. 24 9) The other two ends of the two braided chains they were to fasten to the two settings, and put them on the shoulder straps of the ephod in the front. vs ) They were to make two rings of gold, and put them on the two ends of the breastplate, on the edge of it, which is on the inner side of the ephod. vs ) Two other rings of gold were to be made, and placed on the two shoulder straps, underneath the ephod toward its front, right at the seam above the intricately woven band of the ephod. vs ) This would bind the breastplate by means of its rings to the rings of the ephod, using a blue cord, so that it is above the intricately woven band of the ephod, and so that the breastplate does not come loose from the ephod. vs ) The purpose is stated. vs. 29 a) That Aaron bear the names of the sons of Israel on the breastplate of judgment over his heart. vs. 29a b) Once a year at Yon Kippur, when he went into the holy place, as a memorial before the LORD continually. vs. 29b-c 28:30 The Unim and thummin. 1) They were to put in the breastplate of judgment the Urim and the Thummim. vs, 30a a) The meaning is lights and perfections. b) They were the method by which God made know to the High Priest His will. c) Some think, they were a black and white stone, but no one knows! 2) The position was over Aaron s heart when he goes in before the LORD. vs. 30b a) The awareness of God knowing his heart. b) The love that was to motivate Aaron for the people of God.
4 7 8 3) So Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel over his heart before the LORD continually. * This was His call and duty, as the mediator for the people! 28:31-35 The robe of the ephod. 1) It was to be, the robe of the ephod, all of blue. vs. 31 2) The robe would have an opening for his head in the middle of it, with woven binding all around its opening, so that it does not tear. vs. 32 3) The hem was to have pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet, all around its hem, and bells of gold between them all around. vs, 33 4) The order was to be a golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, upon the hem of the robe all around. vs. 34 5) The robe was to be upon Aaron when he ministers, and its sound will be heard when he goes into the holy place before the LORD and when he comes out, that he may not die. vs. 35 * If the bells stopped ringing, the High Priest would be dead! 28:36-39 The holy mitre plate. 1) They were to make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it, like the engraving of a signet: HOLINESS TO THE LORD. vs. 36 2) There was to be a blue cord, that it may be on the turban; it shall be on the front of the turban. vs. 37 3) The mitre was to be on Aaron s forehead, to bear the iniquity of the holy things which the children of Israel hallow in all their holy gifts; and was to always be on his forehead, that they may be accepted before the LORD. vs. 38 4) They were to make a skillful woven tunic of fine linen and a sash of woven work. vs :40-43 The priestly garments. 1) They were to make for the son s of Aaron tunics, sashes and hats for glory and beauty. vs. 40 a) They were approaching God and doing the work of God constantly, b) They were to have the greatest reverence for God and the things of God. 2) They were to officially separate them from the general population. vs. 41 a) They were to dress them with the garments and articles. vs. 41a b) Anoint them with oil. vs. 41b
5 9 10 c) Consecrate them, commit them completely to God. vs. 41c d) Sanctify them, set them apart for the work of God. vs. 41d e) That they minister to Yahweh as priests. vs. 41f 3) They were to be modest in approaching God. vs a) They were to make them linen trousers to cover their nakedness; covering from the waist to the thighs. vs. 42 b) These were to be on Aaron and on his sons when they come into the tabernacle of meeting, or when they come near the altar to minister in the holy place. vs. 42a-b c) They purpose was that they not incur iniquity and die. vs. 42c d) This was an eternal order, a statute forever to him and his descendants after him. vs. 42d 29:1-46 The consecration and ordination of the priests. 29:1-9 The consecration. 1) The sacrifices to hollow them. vs. 1-3 a) One young bull and two rams without blemish. vs. 1 b) Unleavened bread, unleavened cakes mixed with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil (you shall make them of wheat flour). vs. 2 c) They were to place these in a basket and take them along with the bull and the two rams. vs. 3 2) The priest to be hollowed. vs. 5-9 a) Aaron and his sons were to bee brought to the door of the tabernacle of meeting and washed with water. vs. 5 b) The garments, tunic, the robe of the ephod, the ephod, and the breastplate, were to be put on Aaron and gird him with the intricately woven band of the ephod. vs. 5 c) The turban on his head and the holy crown on the turban. vs. 6 d) The anointing oil was to be poured on his head, to anoint him. vs. 7 e) Then the same was to be done to his son with their vestments. vs. 8-9a f) The priesthood shall be theirs for a perpetual statute, therefore they were to consecrate Aaron and his sons. vs. 9b-c 29:10-25 The sacrifices of consecration. 1) The bull was to be brought before the tabernacle of meeting, that Aaron and his place their hands on the head of the bull. vs. 10
6 11 12 a) Symbolic of transferring theirs sins, dying in their place, making expiation for their sins. b) The type pointing to Christ, the Lamb of God. 2) The were to kill the bull before the LORD, by the door of the tabernacle of meeting. vs. 11 3) Some of the blood was to be placed on the horns of the altar with your finger, the rest of the blood was to be placed at the base of the altar. vs. 12 4) The various part were placed on the alter to burn. vs. 13 5) The flesh of the bull, with its skin and its offal, were to be burnt with fire outside the camp. It is a sin offering. vs. 14 6) The same procedure was repeated with the ram, burning it entirely for it was a burnt offering to the LORD; a sweet aroma, an offering made by fire to the LORD. vs ) The other ram, Aaron and his sons were to also place their hands on the head of the ram. vs. 19 8) The procedure was a bit different. vs a) They were to kill the ram, take some of its blood and put it on the tip of the right ear of Aaron and his sons, their right thumb and on the big toe of their right foot, sprinkling the blood all around on the altar. vs. 20 b) Some blood on the altar, and anointing oil was to be sprinkled on Aaron and on his sons garments, in order to hallowed them. vs. 21 c) Then they were to place in the hands of Aaron and his sons the various things offered, as a wave offering to God. vs d) Then they were to receive them back from their hands and burn them on the altar as a burnt offering, as a sweet aroma before the LORD, an offering made by fire to the LORD. vs. 25 * A burnt offering was for dedication and consecration, completely consumed on the alter! 29:26-37 The food of the priest. 1) The various parts of the sacrifices that were to be Aaron and his sons are mentioned. vs ) This was to be a statute forever, regarding the heave offering. vs. 28 3) The holy garments of Aaron were to be passed down to his sons after his death, to be anointed in them and to be consecrated in them. vs. 29 4) His son would put them on for seven days, when he enters the tabernacle of
7 13 14 meeting to minister in the holy place. vs. 30 5) The ram of their consecration was to be boil in the holy place, they were to eat it and the bread that is in the basket, by the door of the tabernacle of meeting. vs ) Only they were to eat of those things of the atonement to consecrate and sanctify them; no outsider for they are holy. vs. 33 7) The remaining consecration offerings was to be burnt in the morning because it is holy. vs. 34 8) The summary statement to comply as commanded by god for seven days. vs. 35 9) They were to offer a bull every day as a sin offering for atonement, cleanse the altar after making atonement for it, anoint it to sanctify it. vs ) The duration of seven days to make atonement to sanctify the altar to be holy, only what was to touch the alter. vs. 37 3) The accompanied things for the first lamb are given. vs. 40 4) The accompanied things for the second fire to the LORD. vs. 41 5) This was to be a continual burnt offering throughout your generations at the door of the tabernacle of meeting before the LORD, where God met them to speak them. vs. 42 6) God would meet with the children of Israel, for the tabernacle was sanctified by God s glory. vs. 43 7) God would consecrate the tabernacle of meeting, the altar, both Aaron and his sons to minister to Me as priests. vs. 42 8) God would dwell among the children of Israel and be their God. vs. 45 9) The purpose and goal was that they know Yahweh was the LORD their God, who brought them up out of the land of Egypt, that He may dwell among them. for He was the LORD their God. vs :38-46 The continual burnt offerings on the alter. 1) Two lambs of the first year, day by day continually. vs. 38 2) One was to be offered in the morning, the other at twilight. vs. 39
