2 Bishop s Foreword Teamwork One of several key values which has emerged from the recent Strategic Review in the Diocese of Derry and Raphoe is the simple statement that, We serve in teams. The pages which follow reveal the impressive extent to which that statement is played out in so many facets of diocesan and parochial life. A wide range of Boards, Committees, Councils and other groups, the membership of which is listed in this Directory, makes up a network of teams in which people from all parts of the diocese come together and share their experience and expertise for the common good. Teams are stronger than the sum of their individual members. When a team functions well, the healthy levels of encouragement, creativity, support and a refinement of ideas all combine to generate fresh effectiveness and achievement. We are blessed by God to have many people in this diocese willing to play their part in this kind of teamwork. Canon David Crooks has again done us a great service in painstakingly gathering, updating and collating the names and details which combine to make this volume so valuable as a resource and so impressive as a record of diocesan life. Thank you very much to our Diocesan Registrar. The printers, DCG, and advertisers have also played a significant part in enabling us all to have this impressive and well presented volume available without cost to us. 3 Editor s Foreword At the outset, may I on behalf of us all, express our deepest sympathy to the Bishop and Mrs Good, and to their family, and to the Bishop s Mother, on the death on New Year s Day of the Rev d. Canon Raymond Good, the Bishop s Father. May the God of all comfort sustain them at this time. The Diocesan Directory over the last few years has had a theme related to one or other of the Diocesan organisations, though in 2008, the theme was the Lambeth Conference. In 2007, Youth Work in Derry and Raphoe was the theme. This year, it s the turn of the Mothers Union. Sincere thanks to our Diocesan President, Mrs Jean Fox and to Mrs Kay Nesbitt for providing the lovely photographs of the MU in action, and the article on their activities, past and present if you are eligible and do not join, why not?! Just look at all the MU is doing, and play your part in this wonderful organisation. As usual, other organisations such as DRY and RDYC have reported on their activities. Any other organisation or group will be welcome to contribute was one of those third years, commonly called triennials, when the Diocesan Council and members of General Synod and all the numerous Diocesan Committees face the electorate! Many of those who have served faithfully in numerous capacities over many years have been reelected, and will continue to serve faithfully and to offer their talents, but it is really good to see a considerable number of new people who have been elected to the General Synod, and to the Diocesan Council, and to several of the other committees. They will bring new ideas and insights to the ongoing work of the united Dioceses. It is indeed good that so many people are prepared to give time to the service of the Church. There have been several changes amongst the clergy too. Some of the old folk like myself, who has been in Taughboyne for 25 years, just go on and on, but it s great to see new clergy coming in, and adding their talents and skills to the team. I hope that I have managed to get all these changes recorded accurately. It s hard to believe that this is now the tenth edition of Derry and Raphoe Diocesan Directory, which began in 2000, when Bishop Mehaffey asked me to set it up and edit it. It has been for me a labour of love, because I actually enjoy doing it! That enjoyment is possible because of the undeserved appreciation which clergy and people express to me. I don t in the least mind criticisms, and I welcome warmly any suggestions which may improve the Directory. Indeed, over the years, there have been many suggestions, which I believe have been of great use, and which have made this Directory considerably better than it might have been. As usual, I am in the debt of Mr Geoffrey Kelly and Miss Sandra Wallace in the Office at the Diocesan Centre. They ensure that details of membership of the committees and boards, as well as all sorts of other things, are accurately recorded, and they oversee the general proofing and production of the Directory. Nevertheless, the odd wee mistake still gets past, and I alone am responsible! To God be the glory! David W. T. 4 The Mothers Union Parenting Programme Bringing up a family can be a very fulfilling and enjoyable experience. However, there are times when the responsibility of being a parent is overwhelming and the reassurance and support of others would be welcomed. Mothers Union is an organisation long associated with being committed to supporting families and family life. In our ever changing society, Mothers Union support for young families is readily available in the form of parenting groups. Such groups usually meet weekly for 6-8 weeks and are facilitated by trained Mothers Union parenting facilitators, volunteers, trained to national standards. These group sessions aim to equip parents with support and skills, giving them the confidence they need to do the most important job they ll ever undertake. This is done through active learning, discussions and a sharing of ideas and experiences. Quite often parents attending form new friendships which continue long after the planned sessions have ended. In 2000 the Mothers Union funded the training of several parenting facilitators in Ireland. Since then, these facilitators have provided invaluable support and reassurance to parents in our communities. In June this year Derry and Raphoe Action and Outreach unit organised a Meeting and Sharing day for parenting facilitators from 6 dioceses and their support teams. This day celebrated the good work done by these volunteers and had a balance of sharing resources, good practices and practical suggestions as how best to take the programme forward. It was a wonderful privilege to have Rev. Margaret Awili, a trained parenting facilitator from Northern Uganda, with us to share her experiences of the differing role of facilitators in her country. The Mothers Union is proactive in facing the issues of the 21st century. Through the provision of parenting programmes, this organisation is encouraging and affirming parents in their role within the family. Special guests were Archdeacon Joel and Rev. Margaret Awili, in picture. 8 Dioceses of Derry and Raphoe Dioceses of Derry and Raphoe 9

5 helped us all focus on the great qualities of confirmation and where young people fit in to the church. The weekend was held in the Share Centre, Lisnaskea. With many great outdoor pursuit opportunities and group activities for our young people we feel that it was a very successful weekend. Dry has been working hard over the last year developing Sitting Duck groups and establishing resources for the diocese to use. To date there are now 14 established Sitting Ducks groups with other groups in the pipeline making the number increase to 21 groups. This could not be possible without the support of parishes, clergy, volunteers, young people and Gods spirit being able to move within the diocese. The Sitting Ducks Programme, we believe, is still growing in different ways throughout the diocese. Each group takes on different forms of youth work, which makes the project fresh and exciting. In October last year we were able to train, (in partnership with Youthlink:NI), an OCN leadership programme for 12 leaders within the diocese who wanted to develop their skills and knowledge in youth work. The OCN is a youth work qualification that covers a wide base of all the basics. We believe for the benefit of the diocese that this is a great and valuable resource to endorse. This year we are now halfway through the second intake of leaders, which has grown to 18, and will be graduating in June We hope to run the programme again in October 2009 for 20 places which mean that by June 2010 there will be 50 qualified youth workers throughout the diocese who have undergone training for the benefit of the diocese. We also had our Sitting Ducks weekend in the Corrymeela centre, Ballycastle. This was the best weekend we have ever run and felt a great sense of God presence surround us. Rev. Adrian McCartney challenged all of us what It means to be a Christian, faith, prayer and love. This year we will have volunteer jump worker, Julie Green, helping with the diocesan youth work, in partnership with St. Augustine s parish Church, Derry. We also had the launch of two important features of the diocesan youth work, first of all our Sacred Space in the diocesan office and our new website which holds all photos, event details and resources for all parishes to use. In all we have had a year of hard work and growth. This year will be harder trying to sustain growth but worthwhile. We appreciate all your help and understanding with regard to the growth of our groups and thank all who have entered in to the projects. If you do want any more information please contact Shaun at the youth office for information and packs, if you however do not want a Sitting Ducks group please do not feel that you can t contact Shaun, he is there for advice in materials, safe guarding, lending of equipment and we also have a space for you to use in the Diocesan Centre. In November we had our annual big event which brought together 200 young people in Christ Church, Derry for our large gathering event called Shine. This was a huge success and we really want to develop and grow this year s event will be called SYNCRONICITY. Our speaker last year was Sharon Hamill from CIYD who challenged us on how to shine in the world for God in every way possible. Our great band was Andy Good with Lesley and Nigel Caldwell. We had great dramas from Noel Boyd and Andrea Irvine and also hard hitting Testimonies from Tim Shiels from Cornerstone Church. Our thanks again to Canon McNee for letting us use the fabulous church and also his catering team who provided a brilliant spread for all who attended. December saw the Carols by Duck light service illuminated by the gorgeous candelabras of Lifford parish church. The RDYC band helped us remember the true theme of the season with thier festive singing and songs. After our mince pies and sholer we have our traditional trip to the local cinema which one screen is solely rented out for all who attend the night. Every year we try our best to get a Christian based movie e.g Narnia. This year was the first year in which we hosted a Confirmation weekend. The weekend could not have gone better with lots of new faces and leaders helping out. Andrew Brannigan, from Down and Dromore Diocese, lead the workshops at the weekend and 10 Dioceses of Derry and Raphoe Dioceses of Derry and Raphoe 11
