Festival of Homiletics San Antonio 2017 Brueggemann Worship Service Monday, May 15, :30 pm Convention Center, Lila Cockrell Theater Prelude Opening Sentences William McConnell David Gambrell Psalm 49:1 4, 10, 12 Hear this, all you people! Listen, inhabitants of the world, both low and high, rich and poor together. I will speak wisdom with my mouth and have understanding in my heart. I will solve my riddle to the sound of the harp. When we look at the wise, they die; with fools they die together. Mortals cannot abide in their pomp; like beasts, they perish. Hymn God of Grace and God of Glory (1) God of grace and God of glory, on thy people pour thy power; crown thine ancient church s story; bring its bud to glorious flower. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the facing of this hour, for the facing of this hour. (2) Lo! The hosts of evil round us scorn thy Christ, assail his ways! From the fears that long have bound us free our hearts to faith and praise. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the living of these days, for the living of these days. (3) Cure thy children s warring madness;

bend our pride to thy control; shame our wanton, selfish gladness, rich in things and poor in soul. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, lest we miss thy kingdom s goal, lest we miss thy kingdom s goal. (4) Save us from weak resignation to the evils we deplore. Let the gift of thy salvation be our glory evermore. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, serving thee whom we adore, serving thee whom we adore. Scripture Dawn M. Hand Judges 12:1 6 The men of Ephraim were called to arms, and they crossed to Zaphon and said to Jephthah, Why did you cross over to fight against the Ammonites, and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house down over you! Jephthah said to them, My people and I were engaged in conflict with the Ammonites who oppressed us severely. But when I called you, you did not deliver me from their hand. When I saw that you would not deliver me, I took my life in my hand, and crossed over against the Ammonites, and the LORD gave them into my hand. Why then have you come up to me this day, to fight against me? Then Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead and fought with Ephraim; and the men of Gilead defeated Ephraim, because they said, You are fugitives from Ephraim, you Gileadites in the heart of Ephraim and Manasseh. Then the Gileadites took the fords of the Jordan against the Ephraimites. Whenever one of the fugitives of Ephraim said, Let me go over, the men of Gilead would say to him, Are you an Ephraimite When he said, No, they said to him, Then say Shibboleth, and he said, Sibboleth, for he could not pronounce it right. Then they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand of the Ephraimites fell at that time. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Scripture Walter Brueggemann 1 Corinthians 1:10 31 Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose. For it has been reported to me by Chloe s people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters. What I mean is that each of you says, I belong to Paul, or I belong to Apollos, or I belong to Cephas, or I belong to Christ. Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of

Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power. For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart. Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For God s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God s weakness is stronger than human strength. Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, so that no one might boast in the presence of God. He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, in order that, as it is written, Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Sermon Hymn Getting Our Sibilant Right; the Evangelical Shibboleth Walter Brueggemann Somos uno en Cristo / We Are One in Christ Jesus We are one in Christ Jesus, all one body, all one spirit, all together. We are one in Christ Jesus, all one body, all one spirit, all together. We share one God, one mighty Lord, one abiding faith, one binding love, one single baptism, one Holy Comforter, the Holy Spirit, uniting all.

We are one in Christ Jesus, all one body, all one spirit, all together. We are one in Christ Jesus, all one body, all one spirit, all together. We share one God, one mighty Lord, one abiding faith, one binding love, one single baptism, one Holy Comforter, the Holy Spirit, uniting all. Communion David Gambrell, Dawn M. Hand The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Blessed are you, O Lord our God. You are our rock and strength, our salvation in every generation. You send prophets to call us back when we stray, and in returning to you we find refuge and steadfast love. Therefore we praise you, joining the song of the universal church and the heavenly choir: Response Santo, santo, santo / Holy, Holy, Holy (Argentine Santo) Holy, holy, holy. My heart, my heart adores you! My heart knows how to say to you: you are holy, Lord! Santo, santo, santo. Mi corazón te_adora! Mi corazón te sabe decir: Santo_eres, Señor! Blessed is Jesus Christ our Savior. Christ spoke with authority to show your will; even the demons knew his voice and listened to him. Still he calls us to share your message of love with all.

With thanksgiving, we remember how he took bread, and blessed it, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, saying: Take, eat. This is my body, given for you. With thanksgiving, we remember how he took the cup, saying: This cup is the new covenant sealed in my blood. As often as you share this meal, do this remembering me. Remembering your goodness and grace, we offer ourselves to you with gratitude as we share this joyful feast. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us and upon this bread and cup. Make us one in the body and blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. Teach us the wisdom of the cross, the message of Christ crucified. Let the weak be lifted up, and the mighty made humble, so that we may boast in nothing other than the grace of the Lord. Through the Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Spirit, we bless you, God of glory, now and forever. Amen. Jesus said: I am the bread of life. Jesus said: I am the vine, you are the branches. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. Communion Hymn Come to the Table of Grace (1) Come to the table of grace. Come to the table of grace. This is God s table; it s not yours or mine. Come to the table of grace. (2) Come to the table of peace

(3) Come to the table of love (4) Come to the table of hope (5) Come to the table of joy Prayer Dawn M. Hand Holy God, we give you thanks that you have claimed us as your own and nourished us in this meal as members of Christ s body. By the work of your Spirit within us give us grace to glorify you as one, living body in the world; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. Hymn When I Survey the Wondrous Cross (1) When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. (2) Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ my God; all the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood. (3) See, from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down; did e er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown? (4) Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small; love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all. Blessing and Charge Walter Brueggemann, David Gambrell The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit

Sermon Hymn Returning to God with All Our Hearts - Even the Super Crappy Parts Nadia Bolz-Weber Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing (1) Come, thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace; streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above; praise the mount! I m fixed upon it, mount of God s unchanging love! Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God; he, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood. (3) O to grace how great a debtor daily I m constrained to be! Let that grace now, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; here s my heart, O take and seal it; seal it for thy courts above. 12 Festival of Homiletics San Antonio 2017 Carter Florence Worship Service Tuesday, May 16, :30 pm Scottish Rite Theatre Prelude Opening Sentences William McConnell David Gambrell Psalm 36:5 9 Your love and faithfulness, O God, are higher than the heavens. Your righteousness and justice are deeper than the sea. You prepare a feast for us from the abundance of your house. You invite us to drink deeply from the fountain of pure joy. Hymn You Thirsty Ones, Come (1) You thirsty ones, come to the spring! Have you no money? Come, buy wine and milk; come, buy and eat without a price or sum, without a price or sum. (2) Why do you work and earn and spend on that which is not bread? O listen now and come to me; eat what is good instead; eat what is good instead. (3) This food delights and satisfies, the food your God can give; incline your ear and come to me; O hear that you may live, O hear that you may live. (4) Return while God may still be found, and call while God will hear; now let the wicked quit their ways while yet the Lord is near, while yet the Lord is near. (5) My word like heaven s snow descends; it falls like heaven s rain; it waters all the thirsty earth and shall not go in vain, and shall not go in vain. 1

Scripture Anna Carter Florence John 4:3 30 [Jesus] left Judea and started back to Galilee. But he had to go through Samaria. So he came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob s well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon. A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, Give me a drink. (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria? (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, Give me a drink, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water. The woman said to him, Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it? Jesus said to her, Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life. The woman said to him, Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water. Jesus said to her, Go, call your husband, and come back. The woman answered him, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, You are right in saying, I have no husband ; for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true! The woman said to him, Sir, I see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem. Jesus said to her, Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. The woman said to him, I know that Messiah is coming (who is called Christ). When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us. Jesus said to her, I am he, the one who is speaking to you. Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that he was speaking with a woman, but no one said, What do you want? or, Why are you speaking with her? Then the woman left her water jar and went back to the city. She said to the people, Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah, can he? They left the city and were on their way to him. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Sermon Hymn The Wall at the Well Anna Carter Florence I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say (1) I heard the voice of Jesus say, Come unto me and rest; lay down, O weary one, lay down your head upon my breast. I came to Jesus as I was, so weary, worn, and sad; I found in him a resting place, and he has made me glad. 2

(2) I heard the voice of Jesus say, Behold, I freely give the living water, thirsty one; stoop down and drink and live. I came to Jesus, and I drank of that life-giving stream; my thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in him. (3) I heard the voice of Jesus say, I am this dark world s light; look unto me, your morn shall rise, and all your day be bright. I looked to Jesus, and I found in him my star, my sun; and in that light of life I ll walk till traveling days are done. Prayer Reconciling God, pour out your peace. David Gambrell We pray for the church Help us to worship you in spirit and truth, to proclaim the coming of the Savior, and share living water with the world. Reconciling God We pray for the earth Hold the good world you have made in the hollow of your gentle hand. Repair its brokenness; restore its glory. Reconciling God We pray for all nations Speak peace to the peoples of the earth. Help us to seek justice and dignity for all and work together for the common good. Reconciling God We pray for our communities Help us to feed neighbors who are hungry, and give drink to those who are thirsty, sharing bread of life and living water with all. Reconciling God We pray for loved ones Heal the divisions in our own families, protect the victims of violence, and let children live in safety. Reconciling God We give you thanks, O God, that through our Savior Christ you continue to break down the dividing walls between us. Help us to welcome all people no longer strangers or aliens, but citizens with the saints and members of your household; 3

for all are one in you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Hymn The Church of Christ Cannot Be Bound (1) The church of Christ cannot be bound by walls of wood or stone. Where charity and love are found, there can the church be known. (2) True faith will open up the door and step into the street. True service will seek out the poor and ask to wash their feet. (3) True love will not sit idly by when justice is denied. True mercy hears the homeless cry and welcomes them inside. (4) If what we have we freely share to meet our neighbor s need, then we extend the Spirit s care through every selfless deed. (5) The church of Christ cannot be bound by walls of wood or stone. Where charity and love are found, there can the church be known. 16 Festival of Homiletics San Antonio 2017 McKenzie Murphy Worship Service Tuesday, May 16, :30 AM Travis Park UMC Prelude Ashley Cleveland Joshua Sommerville Welcome Dawn M. Hand Prayer to the Holy Spirit O Great Spirit whose breath gives life to the world, and whose voice is heard in the soft breeze: We need your strength and wisdom. Cause us to walk in beauty. Give us eyes ever to behold the red and purple sunset. Make us wise so that we may understand what you have taught us. Help us learn the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock. Make us always ready to come to you with clean hands and steady eyes, so when life fades, like the fading sunset, our spirits may come to you without shame. Come Great Spirit, come. Amen. Gathering Song First Reading Isaiah 55:11 So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. Ashley Cleveland Dawn M. Hand 2 Timothy 4:1-2 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favorable or unfavorable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching.

Song of Preparation Gospel Reading Ashley Cleveland Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie Luke 13:10-17 On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, Woman, you are set free from your infirmity. Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God. Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue leader said to the people, There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath. The Lord answered him, You hypocrites! Doesn t each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water? Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her? When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated, but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing. Sermon Work the WORD Let the Word Do the Work Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie Apostles Creed Ecumenical Version I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. The tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread." But he answered, "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, 'He will command his angels concerning you,' and 'On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.'" Jesus said to him, "Again it is written, 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour; and he said to him, "All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me." Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden, Sprung in completeness where his feet pass. Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning, Born of the one light Eden saw play. Praise with elation, praise ev'ry morning, God's recreation of the new day. First Reading Cindy Senarighi 2 Timothy 1:3-7 I am grateful to God whom I worship with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did when I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day.

Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you. For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline. 2 Timothy 2:1-2 You then, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus; and what you have heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will be able to teach others as well. Lord's Prayer O God, whose love makes us one family May your unspeakable name be revered Now, here on earth may your commonwealth come On earth as in heaven may your dreams come true Give us today our bread for today Forgive us our wrongs as we forgive Lead us away from the perilous trial Liberate us from the evil For the kingdom is yours and yours alone The power is yours and yours alone The glory is yours and yours alone Now and forever, amen... The Pharisee was amazed to see that he did not first wash before dinner. Then the Lord said to him, Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. You fools! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also?

So give for alms those things that are within; and see, everything will be clean for you. But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and herbs of all kinds, and neglect justice and the love of God; it is these you ought to have practiced, without neglecting the others." 26 Festival of Homiletics San Antonio 2017 Thompson Worship Service Wednesday, May 17, 2017, 11:00 am Scottish Rite Theatre Prelude Opening Sentences William McConnell David Gambrell Psalm 23:4, 6 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. For you are with me, O Lord, your rod and your staff they comfort me. Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life. And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Hymn Here in This Place (1) Here in this place the new light is streaming; now is the darkness vanished away; see in this space our fears and our dreamings brought here to you in the light of this day. Gather us in, the lost and forsaken; gather us in, the blind and the lame; call to us now, and we shall awaken; we shall arise at the sound of our name. (2) We are the young, our lives are a mystery. We are the old who yearn for your face. We have been sung throughout all of history, called to be light to the whole human race. Gather us in, the rich and the haughty; gather us in, the proud and the strong; give us a heart, so meek and so lowly; give us the courage to enter the song. (3) Here we will take the wine and the water; here we will take the bread of new birth. Here you shall call your sons and your daughters, call us anew to be salt for the earth. Give us to drink the wine of compassion; give us to eat the bread that is you; nourish us well, and teach us to fashion 1

lives that are holy and hearts that are true. (4) Not in the dark of buildings confining, not in some heaven, light years away: here in this place the new light is shining; now is the kingdom, and now is the day. Gather us in and hold us forever; gather us in and make us your own; gather us in, all peoples together, fire of love in our flesh and our bone. Scripture Lisa Thompson Ezekiel 37:1 14 The hand of the Lord came upon me, and brought me out by the spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. The Holy One led me all around them; there were very many lying in the valley, and they were very dry. God said to me, Mortal, can these bones live? I answered, O Lord God, you know. Then the Lord said to me, Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the Lord. So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied, suddenly there was a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. Then God said to me, Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live. I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood on their feet, a vast multitude. Then the Holy One said to me, Mortal, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are cut off completely. Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: I am going to open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people; and I will bring you back to the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people. I will put my spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you on your own soil; then you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken and will act, says the Lord. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Sermon Hymn Let These Bones Live! Lisa Thompson My Shepherd Will Supply My Need (1) My shepherd, you supply my need; Jehovah is your name. In pastures fresh you make me feed, beside the living stream. You bring my wandering spirit back when I forsake your ways, and lead me, for your mercy s sake, in paths of truth and grace. 2

(2) When I walk through the shades of death your presence is my stay; one word of your supporting breath drives all my fears away. Your hand, in sight of all my foes, does still my table spread; my cup with blessings overflows; your oil anoints my head. (3) The sure provisions of my God attend me all my days; O may your house be my abode, and all my work be praise. There would I find a settled rest, while others go and come; no more a stranger, or a guest, but like a child at home. Prayer Out of the depths we cry to you: O Lord, hear our prayer. We pray for those whose hope is lost, who feel dried up and cut off from you. By your grace, open their graves; bring them back to the land of the living. Out of the depths we cry to you We pray for those who are oppressed, held captive by the power of death. Release them from their chains; unbind them and let them go! Out of the depths we cry to you We pray for those who weep, lost and lifeless in fear and regret. Grant them the peace of your presence; show them what your love can do. Out of the depths we cry to you We pray for those who are dying, the light of life fading from their eyes. Help them to believe in you so that they may live and never die. Out of the depths we cry to you Empower and equip us, O God, to live out the words we pray offering hope to the hopeless, liberty to those who are oppressed, comfort to those who weep, and abundant life to all. Out of the depths we cry to you 3

Guide us by your Word, O Lord, and fill us with your Spirit so that we may share your transforming love through our own words and actions; through Jesus Christ, the resurrection and the life. Amen. Hymn Soon and Very Soon (1) Soon and very soon we are going to see the King. Soon and very soon we are going to see the King. Soon and very soon we are going to see the King. Hallelujah, hallelujah, we re going to see the King! (2) No more crying there: we are going to see the King. No more crying there: we are going to see the King. No more crying there: we are going to see the King. Hallelujah, hallelujah, we re going to see the King! (3) No more dying there: we are going to see the King. No more dying there: we are going to see the King. No more dying there: we are going to see the King. Hallelujah, hallelujah, we re going to see the King! (4) Soon and very soon we are going to see the King. Soon and very soon we are going to see the King. Soon and very soon we are going to see the King. Hallelujah, hallelujah, we re going to see the King! Blessing and Charge David Gambrell, Lisa Thompson May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace and faith, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Alleluia! Sweet Holy Spirit, sweet heavenly Dove, stay right here with us, filling us with your love; and for these blessings we lift our hearts in praise; without a doubt we ll know that we have been revived when we shall leave this place. Joshua Sommerville Words from Dawn M. Hand Sweet, Sweet Spirit UMH #334 Sweet Holy Spirit, sweet heavenly Dove, stay right here with us, filling us with your love; and for these blessings we lift our hearts in praise; without a doubt we ll know that we have been revived when we shall leave this place. First Reading Dawn M. Hand Psalm 25 To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul. O my God, in you I trust; let me not be put to shame; let not my enemies exult over me. Let none who wait for you be put to shame; let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous. Make me to know your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths.

Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all day long. Be mindful of your mercy, O LORD, and of your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for your goodness sake, O LORD! Good and upright is the LORD; therefore the LORD instructs sinners in the way. and leads the humble in what is right, and teaches them their way. All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep the LORD s covenant and his decrees. The Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Gospel Reading Raquel S. Lettsome Luke 10:25-37 The Parable of the Good Samaritan Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he said, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? What do you read there?" He answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself."

And he said to him, "You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live." But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbour?" Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan while travelling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, 'Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.' Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?" He said, "The one who showed him mercy." Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise." I will say this is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice, for God has made me glad. God has made me glad; God has made me glad. I will rejoice, for God has made me glad. God has made me glad; God has made me glad. I will rejoice, for God has made me glad.

Psalm 114 Dawn M. Hand Sung response: Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord. When Israel went out from Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language, Judah became God s sanctuary, Israel God s dominion. The sea looked and fled; Jordan turned back. The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs. Why is it, O sea, that you flee? O Jordan, that you turn back? O mountains, that you skip like rams? O hills, like lambs? Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the LORD, at the presence of the God of Jacob, who turns the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of water. Sung response: Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea. Hear the word of the LORD: Be still, and know that I am God! The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Hymn Calm to the Waves Calm to the waves. Calm to the wind. Jesus whispers, Peace, be still. Balm to our hearts. Fears at an end. In stillness, hear his voice. Scripture Michael Renninger Mark 4:35 41 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, Let us go across to the other side. And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing? He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Peace! Be still! Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them, Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith? And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
