1 Mid-Week Lent 3 Jesus is Our Perfect High Priest February 28, 2018 Welcome to Worship Welcome and thank you for joining us for worship today! In our service we gather before our almighty and saving God to offer him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God s holy and powerful Word. Through this Word, God strengthens our faith and draws us closer to him. PREPARING FOR WORSHIP Jesus is our Great High Priest and he is our perfect High Priest. He was perfect already in the way he prayed. He finished his work and was made perfect by the way he obeyed his heavenly Father, even to the point of death. Tonight we see the importance of having a perfect High Priest. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP God, our rock and fortress, protect your people who confess your name, and strengthen the hearts of those who trust your mercy, that they may proclaim your goodness and praise you for your unfailing love. I pray this in the name of Jesus my Great High Priest. Amen. We thank you for providing all that we need for body and life. Bless us who have gathered in your name. Forgive our sins. Speak to our hearts. Dispel our sorrows with the comfort of your Word, and receive our hymns of thanks and praise, through Jesus Christ, our living Savior, who reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 3 LET MY PRAYER RISE BEFORE YOU Psalm 141 M: Let our prayers be acceptable in your sight. Come and help us in time of need that we may sing your praise in holy joy now and forever, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. C: Amen. 4

4 PSALM OF THE DAY The Lord provided redemption, a payment, people needed. This psalm invites us to ponder with delight what our Lord has done for us. The Psalm will be sung in unison. Psalm 119c Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long. I have more insight that all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes. I have more understanding than the elders, for I obey your precepts. Refrain I have kept my feet from every evil path so that I might obey your Word. I have not departed from your laws, for you yourself have taught me. How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Refrain 5

5 PSALM PRAYER M: God of majesty and power, the works of your hands are gracious and glorious, worthy of praise. Fill us with awe and reverence for your mighty deeds that we may follow your precepts all our days; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. C: Amen. PASSION HISTORY Mark 14:27-42 Gethsemane Jesus said to them, You will all fall away because of me. For it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered But after I am raised, I will go ahead of you into Galilee. 29 But Peter said to him, Even if all fall away, I will not. 30 Jesus said to him, Amen I tell you: Today this very night before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times. 31 But Peter kept saying emphatically, Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you. And they all said the same thing. 32 They went to a place named Gethsemane. Jesus told his disciples, Sit here while I pray. 33 Then he took Peter, James, and John along with him and began to be troubled and distressed. 34 He said to them, My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow, even to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch. 35 Going forward a little, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36 He also said, Abba, Father, everything is possible for you. Take this cup away from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will. 37 When he returned to the disciples, he found them sleeping. He said to Peter, Simon, are you sleeping? Were you not strong enough to keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. 39 Again he went away and prayed, saying the same thing. 40 When he returned, he found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. They did not know what they should answer him. 41 He returned the third time and said to them, Are you going to continue sleeping and resting? It is enough. The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise, let us go. Look, my betrayer is near. (EHV) 1 27 Zechariah 13:7 6

HYMN Lord Jesus, You Are Going Forth Christian Worship #126 SERMON Hebrews 5:7-9 Jesus is Our Perfect High Priest In the days of his flesh, he offered prayers and pleas with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8 Although he was the Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered. 9 After he was brought to his goal, he became the source of eternal salvation for everyone who obeys him, (EHV) 7

9 LORD, HAVE MERCY M: For the well-being of people everywhere, for the growth of your church in all the world, and for the strengthening of all who serve and worship here, we pray, O Lord: M: For one another, young and old, for your blessings that come with every stage of life, and for joy in doing your will, we pray, O Lord: M: For our public servants who work day and night to bring protection, justice, learning, and health to this and every place, we pray to you, O Lord: M: For favorable weather and bountiful harvests, for clothing and food, for health of body, mind, and spirit, and for deliverance from all sin and every form of evil, we pray to you, O Lord: 10

10 M: For the faithful who have gone before us, who have shared with us your good news, whose souls are now at rest in your heavenly kingdom, we give you thanks, O Lord: M: In thanksgiving for your many and varied gifts to us, we now commend ourselves to your care. Be our shield and strength, O Lord. LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. PRAYER FOR PEACE M: Lord God, all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works come from you. Give to us, your servants, that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey your commandments. Defend us also from the fear of our enemies that we may live in peace and quietness, through the merits of Jesus Christ our Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 12 Thank you for worshiping with us this evening. We pray that you were edified by the Word of God as it was presented in the spoken word and in song. We thank Pastor Mark Schewe for serving us with the Word and leading us in worship. Pastor Schewe serves at our sister congregation in Clovis, St. Peter Lutheran Church. This evening Pastor Schroeder is preaching at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Livermore. We thank those who organized, prepared, and setup our Lenten fellowship meal this evening before worship. Join us next week as we continue to focus on Jesus Christ is our Great High Priest with the theme: Jesus is Our Self-Sacrificing High Priest.
