Mark Hayes Confession and Forgiveness P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, the Maker of heaven and earth, the Word made flesh, the Lord and giver of life. C: Amen. P: Let us come into the light of Christ, confessing our need for God's mercy. (silence for reflection) P: God of peace, C: We confess that we are not at peace with others or with ourselves. We bring to you all that tears us apart: discord in our families, violence in our world, our own conflicted hearts. In your mercy, mend us. Reconnect us to one another and to you. Let peace reign over all the earth, through the Prince of peace, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. P: In the Word who has come to dwell with us, God has given us grace upon grace: forgiveness that is stronger than our sins, love that can heal every broken heart. Hear this word of God's pardon and peace: in the name of + Jesus our Savior, you re sins are forgiven. Rise, shine, for your light has come. C: Amen

5 Gospel Luke 2: When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord"), 24 and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, "a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons." 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Messiah. 27 Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, 29 "Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel." 33And the child's father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, "This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed 35 so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed and a sword will pierce your own soul too." 36There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37 then as a widow to the age of eighty- four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. 39 When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. 40 The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him. 7 Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,* who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 8 (Please be seated following Sharing of Peace) Community Time-During this time we would like to welcome and introduce guests at SLC. The Meal Communion Distribution-All Baptized Christians are welcome to join with us in this meal where we believe the true body and blood of Christ are really present and received under the form of bread and wine. At SLC, we commune by Intinction. As you are ushered forward, please come to the stations on either side of the Baptismal font, extend your hand to receive the bread (or ask for a gluten free wafer), and then dip it either into the wine or grape juice. White grape juice is available as a substitute and is offered in the second chalice. You are also invited to remain at the altar rail for a brief time of prayer and meditation if you wish. Adults who do not receive the supper or children who have not received First Communion instruction are encouraged to come forward for a blessing. 9 Offertory Prayer P: Let us pray. Merciful Father, C: we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us-- ourselves, our time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love. Receive them for the sake of him who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Great Thanksgiving (Sung to the Tune Good Christian Friends Rejoice ) P: Oh, may the Good Lord be with you. As we celebrate the 500 th anniversary of the year of the Reformation, here is something you may not know about Martin Luther and the Reformation. The Reformation paved the way for what we still refer to as a Protestant work ethic. Luther s teachings about the priesthood of all believers helped dissolve the wall between temporal and spiritual realms. In doing so, everyday work and labor was affirmed and seen as pleasing to God; it was no longer considered an inferior life to that of a monastic life or the priesthood.
