3 From The East April 4, 2018: Wor. Jason Wilson with the 717 District Inspector Wor. Paul Bazerkanian during our official visit. It has been an honor and pleasure to have Wor. Paul Bazerkanian be our District Inspector. Greetings South Pasadena Masonic family. I hope everyone is having a great spring. It has been a great month here at lodge, with our Easter themed stated dinner and our annual Chili Cook Off our brethren, family, and friends had a great time! Our Chili Cook-off winners took home some excellent prizes this year (see more on page 9). We also had a great Entered Apprentice and Fellow Craft training night and another successful and thoughtprovoking Illumination Lecture with Most Worshipful John R. Heisner (read all about his visit and talk on page 10). At our April Stated Meeting we had our official visit by 717 District Inspector Wor. Paul Barzerkanian. It is always a pleasure to see him at our lodge. He has been very supportive of our Masonic education and our lectures, many times attending our lecture series. This summer of few officers will be traveling with him to Oklahoma to assist in the conferral of a Third Degree. It has been an honor and pleasure to have Wor. Paul Bazerkanian be our District Inspector. Worshipful Jason Wilson May Our new lodge pins have arrived! This year, instead of one large pin, we have 3 small ones. All 3 of these pins were designed by Bro. Johnny Arias. One can be worn by all and the other two by Masons only. I ve seen a bit of a dip in degree night attendance lately, so the only way to collect all 3 of these limited pins is too attend 3 degree nights! We are looking forward to several Third Degrees this summer and a couple of more Fellow Craft degrees come by and collect them all. Looking ahead we have another great lecture night planned and our lodge s 130th Anniversary Festive Board on Saturday, June 26, 2018 (get the details on page 6). Also my favorite part of summer... Hawaiian shirts at stated dinners and meetings during the summer months, starting at the June 6 th stated dinner, we will have a Hawaiian shirt contests for the best aloha, so start dusting and pressing your Hawaiian shirts now. Adrian Howard gifted the Job s Daughter with Easter Baskets filled with chocolates and other candies at our April Stated Dinner. March s Charity March 25, 2018: For March our lodge donated 300 hand made sanitary kits to the Downtown Women s Center. May

In my journey through Masonry I've come across the CEO of a fortune 500 company and a truck driver sitting next to each other rubbing shoulders and calling each other Brothers without any prejudice. Masonry has gone through some dramatic changes since it's conception: It's humble origins as a guild "union" for stonemasons, creating methods to identify (words, signs and grips) one another. Assuring that a traveling brother would secure a job and shelter during his travels. As time went by, Masonry would fall into a category for the social elite. Men of blue blood - wealth. More concerned on "do you like my cravat?" And not the ritual or deeper philosophical significance the Craft laid hidden in plain view. I would say that 95% of us that call ourselves Masons wouldn't be accepted into the Fraternity for several reasons, such as lack of money, social status or even one s place of origin. Just like everything, things have to adapt to their surroundings in order to survive, even that yellow brick road that Dorothy walked on had hurdles that she overcame. We are all friend's (the Tinman, the Cowardly Lion, and the Scarecrow) of Dorothy, friends of different backgrounds and needs. Working together we can surpass anything. To be one ask one, with such a statement Masonry now is open to everyone, it doesn't matter what is your social status, religion and orientations such things as are irrelevant to our Fraternity. What matters is how you are willing to serve, learn and work well with others. This is what makes out Craft pure and has allowed it to survive for over 300 years. We must hold ourselves to a higher standard of humility and acceptance. Learn from each other and grow to be better contributors to society and humanity. I read somewhere that: Each time you judge someone, you reveal a part of you that needs healing. May

6 You Ready?! In 2018, South Pasadena Masonic Lodge celebrates it s 130 th Anniversary. It is Worshipful Jason Wilson s wish to commemorate the occasion by having a Festive Board celebration. In the past three years we have participated in the District Table Lodges, where we partook in celebrating the 717 District and it s lodges. This year we are taking on the Table Lodge duties alone for the insane reason of transforming it into a Festive Board. Why a Festive Board? By having a Festive Board we are not obligated to tile the event, which means we can open up our celebration to family and friends. All May that attend will experience the same traditional fun we have had at our past Table Lodges, which before has been limited to Masons only. So, we are happy to announce that our 130 th Anniversary Festive Board will take place on Saturday, June 23, 2018, starring at 5pm. Tickets will be $40.00 per person. Here are some of the facts of this year s Festive Board: Brother Masons and Non-Masons are welcomed. We d like to keep all guests at least 21 years of age and older. That night we will highlight highlight Brothers from our Lodge that have made a social impact in the past 130 years. Toast will be themed to the traditional seven courses reflecting each Brother being highlighted. Toast will be given by selected Past Masters who will historically reflect on the 290 Brothers we will be toasting. The Festive Board will be a black tie affair, as it has been the tradition, and tickets will run $40 presale or $75 at the door. The admission will include an extended 60 minute hosted reception, seven course dinner, 20 + page anniversary program booklet and commemorative cannon (shot glass). Proceeds from this event will go to the Mason4Mitts program. Tickets go on sale May 13 th through our website and at our June stated dinner [Wednesday, June 6], Summer BBQ [Saturday, June 2 nd ] and Degrees). Please mark your calendars: June 23 rd, 2018, to celebrate the 130 th Anniversary of our beloved Lodge. This will undoubtedly be a historic occasion and one of the most memorable events of the year. 7 On Saturday, March , the fifth annual Chili Cook Off took place at South Pasadena Masonic Temple. The event was co-chaired by the South Pasadena Chapter of the Eastern Star and was led by Ed Spalding, PM and Pam Potter, PM. Close to 60 brothers, family, and friends gathered in the lodge dinning room where 10 home made chilies were put on display for all to taste. The judges for the evening Most Worshipful R. Stephen Doan and his wife had the pressure, and pleasure, of judging the array of chili s, from spicy to sweet, all various chilies were represented. Chili was not the only treat that evening guest enjoyed, we had grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, veggies, and over a dozen pies, cookies, brownies and cakes. The Chili Cook Off has evolved into a big family feasting event. The first place 2018 chili cook-off winner took home a nice flat screen tv. Congratulations to all who participated! May

9 The Illumination Lecture Series By Bro. Jeriel Smith April 2, 2018 The 2018 Lecture Committee Welcomes MW John R. Heisner The third Illumination Lecture of 2018 took place on April 2, with a thoughtful and significant presentation by Most Worshipful John R. Heisner: The Ancient Landmarks: A Grand Master s Working Tools. Who better than this Past Grand Master ( ) of Masons of California to take our audience of 60+ men and women back to the basic fundamentals of our Craft to lay the foundation for his optimistic view of the present and future of Freemasonry as a leading Light in the promotion of Universal Truths based upon Masonic philosophy and symbolism. The most central value of our Fraternity, he told us, is just that Brotherhood which he provocatively declared to be a gender neutral term. It s most basic principle, he added, is selfimprovement. He then proceeded to review all 25 of those Ancient Landmarks, which establish the respect and trust, the basis for all spiritual growth, needed for the pursuit of Truth. Although the last of the landmarks states that These Landmarks are unchangeable..., they can and do evolve, as does Humanity and the values we live by, toward a greater understanding of our ongoing spiritual evolution. This involves a study of nature, to comprehend where we, as humans, fit into it. This is a life-long process, wherein time, patience and perseverance accomplishes all. Having established this groundwork, Worshipful Heisner turned his May

10 attention to two concepts arising from the Landmarks: regularity and recognition. Masonic regularity depends, in large measure, on the requirements for Blue Lodges and their members, as set by their Grand Lodges. In California, these include: belief in a Supreme Being; a Book of Holy Writings on the altar; Allegiance to Grand Lodge and Country; no discussion in lodge of religion or politics; and no Woman can be made a Mason. Such rules, like our rituals, vary between Jurisdiction at any given time; and also evolve over time in many jurisdictions. Prince Hall and withdrawing it from others (e.g., Georgia and Tennessee). In each of his examples, Grand Masters working tools, the Ancient Charges, were employed to guide these momentous decisions. At the dinner following his lecture, MW John dedicated & signed and gifted copies of his book, In Search of Grand Master Hiram: two to our Lodge and one to each member of the Illumination Committee. Recognition is given by Grand Lodges to take notice of (recognize) other Grand Lodges and their constituent Blue Lodges as being regular, sometimes in their own right, even if their regularity criteria materially differ. Calling them Noble Journeys MW John described, in detail beyond our space to describe it here, the evolution(s) of California GL s denying, granting, its recognition to such Grand Lodges as Baja, France, and May
