12 th Sunday in Ordinary Time June 20, 2009 Delle McCormick and Marisa Werner "Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith? -Mark 4:40 1)Announcements and Prayer Requests 2) Opening Meditation (-Pablo Neruda, Cataclysm, Part X) Fear envelopes bones like new skin, envelopes blood with night s skin, the earth moves beneath the soles of the feet it is not your hair but the terror in your head, like long hair made of vertical nails, and what you see are not shattered streets, but rather, within you, your own crushed walls, your frustrated infinity 3) Opening Prayer (World of Contradictions by Mary Ann Ebert in The Way of Peace, ed. Hannah Ward & Jennifer Wild) O God of peace, your beauty calls us While conflicts rage and cares dismay: How can we smile when love impels us To strive and bleed and end the fray? When healing flees as pain consumes us Or pity fires our angry eyes, How dare an opening leaf beguile us Or birdsong taunt the thundering skies? How dare you God, assault our grieving With tender buds and radiant stars? The gossamer grass and pearly sunset Make mock of justice s call to arms. You set before us calm and beauty, Truth, justice, mercy where is peace? How can we chose when torn by tension When blessings soothe while hates increase? Creator God, your gift of freedom Reveals you trust us; come what may We walk this world of contradictions In steadfast anguish, Jesus way. 3) Opening Song: Be Not Afraid #434

4) First Reading: Job 38:1-11 A Reading from the Book of Job Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind: "Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me. "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy? "Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb? when I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band, and prescribed bounds for it, and set bars and doors, and said, 'Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stopped'?" Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God. 5) Responsorial Psalm: (lost track of source; a book somewhere in our house) We praise and adore you. Almighty God, beginning and end; giver of food and drink, clothing and warmth, love and hope: life in all its goodness R Lord Jesus, carpenter s son; Lover of outcasts, Friend of the poor; One of us yet one with God; Crucified and risen: Life in the midst of death R Holy Spirit, storm and breath of love; Bridge builder, eye-opener, Living power of Jesus; Waker of the oppressed, God of the unexpected, Untamable energy of life R Holy Trinity, forever one, Whose nature is community; Source of all sharing, In whom we love, and meet, and know our neighbor, Life in all its fullness, making all things new R

6) Second Reading A Reading from the continuing revelation of God to people of faith. None of us dared to go forward to help the injured as they writhed.... I was cowering behind a layer of other people whom I hoped would absorb bullets; the notebook in my hand was stained with perspiration from fear. Troops had already opened fire on an ambulance that had tried to collect the injured, so other ambulances kept their distance. Finally, some unlikely saviors emerged the rickshaw drivers. These were peasants and workers who made a living pedaling bicycle rickshaws, carrying passengers or freight around Beijing. It was those rickshaw drivers who slowly pedaled out toward the troops to collect the bodies of the dead and injured. Then they raced back to us, legs straining furiously, rushing toward the nearest hospital. - Nicholas D. Kristof, on witnessing the Tiananmen Square massacre, 20 years ago today. From his New York Times op-ed, "Bullets Over Beijing" (June 3, 2009). Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God. 7) Gospel Acclamation 8) Gospel Reading: Mark 4:35-41 God be with you. And also with you. A reading from the holy gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O God. On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, "Let us go across to the other side." And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the

boat was already being swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, "Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?" He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace! Be still!" Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them, "Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?" And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?" The good news of salvation. Glory and praise to our savior Jesus Christ. 9) Silent Reflection 10) Discussion 11) Intercessions (- adapted from Out of the Fire; Worship and Theology of Liberation by Gertrude Lebans.) In trust, let us pray to the one coming into our hearts to awaken holiness in our midst. Let us pray for the world, especially where there is poverty, hunger, or war. Let us pray for those who suffer in mind or body, for prisoners, for those in despair, for those who mourn and for those who wait. Let us pray for the transformation of systems and bureaucracies, of gender relations, of race relations, of class divisions, of age and ability stereotypes. Let us pray for ourselves, opening ourselves to healing and risk, to the power to let go and the courage to take on. 12) Bread Breaking Prayer (adapted from a Eucharistic Prayer for Children from internet and Evening Meal Blessing for Easter by Edward Hays of Shantivanam, Easton, Kansas in Kelly, Marcia & Jack, 100 Graces: Mealtime Blessings.)

God of Love, you have brought us here together so that we can give you thanks and praise for all the wonderful things you have done. We thank you for all that is beautiful in the world and for the happiness you have given us. We praise you for daylight and for your word which lights up our minds. We praise you for the earth, and all the people who live on it, and for our life which comes from you. We know that you are good. You love us and do great things for us. So we sing (say) together: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. God of Love, you are always thinking about your people; you never forget us. You sent Jesus, who lived and died for us and who came to show us how to live. Jesus cured sick people, cared for those who were poor and wept with those who were sad. Jesus forgave sinners and taught us to forgive each other. Jesus loved everyone and showed us how to be kind. Jesus embraced children and blessed them. So we are glad to sing (say): Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. God of Love, all over the world your people praise you. So now we pray with the whole Church a prayer that Jesus taught us: Eternal Spirit, Earth-maker, Pain-bearer, Life-giver Source of all that is and that shall be, Father and Mother of us all, Loving God, in whom is heaven: The hallowing of your name echo through the universe! The way of your justice be followed by the peoples of the world! Your heavenly will be done by all created beings! Your commonwealth of peace and freedom sustain our hope and come on earth. With the bread we need for today, feed us. In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us. In times of temptation and test, strengthen us. From trials too great to endure spare us. From the grip of all that is evil, free us. For you reign in the glory of the power that is love, now and forever. Amen.

The day is coming to a close, and, like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, we pause to break bread together. May our eyes be opened, and, in this act of common sharing, may we see the Risen Lord in one another. May we see the Lord of Life in our food, our conversation, and lives shared in common. May the blessing of God, God s peace and love, rest upon our table. Alleluia! Amen. 13) Sharing of Bread: Deep Peace Sara Thomsen 14) Silent Reflection 15) Closing Blessing May God bless us and keep us, may God s face shine upon us and grant to us and to all our broken world, peace. May the blessing of Almighty God, the Creator, the Redeemer and the Holy Spirit, come upon us and remain with us forever. Amen. 16) Closing Song: Blanket for a Sail 17) HAPPY BIRTHDAY Patricia Morrison June 18 18) Sharing the Peace

Blanket For A Sail (-Harry Nilsson) Way out on the ocean Far beyond the seven seas There's a tiny little boat Faith is keeping her afloat And a tiny little skipper With his worn and tattered coat You see the law of the ocean Says that you shall never fail Use your heart as a rudder Faith as a compass And a blanket for a sail Sleep for the weary And dreams for us all Rest your head on a pillow And I'll tell you a tale Use your heart as a blanket And a blanket for a sail Images: Altar of an RC church in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico featuring statue of ascending Christ.
