Simon K. John (832) When we go through certain situations in our lives, we are seldom ready to submit ourselves to God to realize our purpose on the matter. The lives of Moses, David, Paul, to name a few, show us what God put them through to mold them into what God wanted them to become, to be able to lead the people of Israel. Moses, after receiveing his education in the Pharaoh s palace, went to shepherd his father-in-law s sheep, all this to be able to lead the people of Israel at God s appointed time. David, shepherding his father s sheep, learned how to protect them from the claws of the wild animals. Paul, on the road to Damascus, after hearing Jesus speak to him, could not see. But, during those times, if Moses, David, or Paul questioned why they had to go through what they did, would not have been able to be used by God for the purpose they were called for. God called Moses to lead his people from Egypt from the hand of the Pharaoh to their promised land. David, in everyone s sight was only good to be a shepherd boy, but in God s sight, he was worthy to be the King of Israel. Paul, a Roman citizen, started off persecuting the followers of Jesus. After his conversion, God used him mightily to preach the gospel. For everything that God has planned for us, there is a time. In Isaiah 64: 8, it says But now, O Lord, You are SECRETARY Sunny Thomas (361) our Father; We are the clay, and You our potter; And all we are the work of Your hand. When we submit ourselves to God, when we surrender our lives to God, in his time, he will do all things. What we as God s children should do is to obey, as the psalmist says in Psalm 46: 10, Be still, and know that I am God! 3 father s day celebrations at cif WHAT MAKES A DAD - Anonymous God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle's flight, The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed, The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need, Then God combined these qualities, When there was nothing more to add, He knew His masterpiece was complete, And so, He called it... Dad Dear Dad, A letter to my dad There are no words to describe my love for you. You are my strong tower. You taught me to trust in the Lord and how to walk in faith. You have encouraged me to reach for the stars. Thank you for all the times you helped me believe that anything is possible. I want to be more because you believe in me. You are so proud of me and your confidence in me reminds me that I am meant for greater things! I can always count on you in every situation, and to pray for me in the most inconvenient times. 4 Face to Face with Sam Shaji EDITOR: When did you start playing the drums? SAM SHAJI: I was ten when I started playing the drums. When I was nine, I used to play the bass drum during cottage meetings and my dad noticed that and encouraged me to learn to play the drums. EDITOR: What or who were your early passions and influences? SAM SHAJI: I thought the drums were shiny! My cousin, Lance, was the first one I looked up to and he had a drum set at home and that s how it started. We stayed with them for three months but I never got to play with it. I always wanted to try it out. EDITOR: So how long have you been playing drums now? SAM SHAJI: Too long. 7 years. EDITOR: Drums are normally seen as an instrument playing in a band situation accompanying other musicians. How did you come to realize its potential as an instrument? SAM SHAJI: Actually even though it s in a band setting, a lot of kids, boys that are Pentecostal wants to play the drums. Why? Cause worship has made it to a point where you need drums, and guitar or the piano. And boys only have two selections mostly; it s either the guitar or drums. People like piano too, but I m saying for me, I didn t want to go into piano. My options were either guitar or drums and I picked drums. But yeah, a lot of Pentecostal boys want to play the drums. EDITOR: I don t think it s just boys. I want to play drums too! SAM SHAJI: No, no that s not what I m saying. I know a lot of girls who play the drums. But my friends from other Christian denominations always tell me how Pentecostal kids are so talented, cuz everytime they ask, what do you do, we say, we sing, we play, we do something. They weren t brought up in a situation where they have seen instruments being used during worship. EDITOR: What types of music do you listen to? SAM SHAJI: Um, I listen to bands, but obviously I listen to Christian music, but lately I ve been listening to bands. EDITOR: By Christian music, what do you mean? Gospel, Christian pop? SAM SHAJI: No, no, gospel is only with Israel. Israel is a conservative gospel singer, he s good, that s the only gospel I listen to. I listen to worship songs mostly, cuz when you listen to new songs coming out, you notice a trend. If you listen to western music, you know what s going to happen. If I go for worship music, I d probably say, the basic Hillsong and Elevation worship. But now I m listening to bands that have drums in it. So more like, maybe OneRepublic, Imagine Dragons, The Script... EDITOR: Since you re a drummer, when you listen to songs, or a band, is it easier for you to pick up the drums? Because for me, I have to put everything else down to hear the drums. SAM SHAJI: Yes, you have to. I remember the first lesson I had for drums was to get the drum part by itself. I usually listen to it and I just play with my hands or put it in my head, oh this is the beat. That helps me with worship music. EDITOR: What types of music do you like to play? SAM SHAJI: I only play worship music. I like worship music. EDITOR: What s your preference? English or Malayalam worship songs? EDITOR: When I started, I wanted to play Malayalam so much! But now I just want to play English. EDITOR: What s the difference? SAM SHAJI: Malayalam is so repetitive. You can count the number of fundamental beats in your fingers. English is so different. Once you get to know it, it s really a lot of complex beats. There has been times when I ve had to sit down and listen to a song again and again. And again. I like English, it s challenging. EDITOR: When you first started playing, what were your main challenges, and how have they changed over time? SAM SHAJI: Well, in the beginning, the biggest problem was, I had one beat for the whole thing. My timing was ok, but I always only had one beat. I never changed it. Another thing was, I didn t know how to play the different part of the drums. Malayalam songs had one beat, but I really struggled with English songs. At that time, I just needed to learn new beats. But as I grew, I listened to different things. Now it s not beats, it s dynamics, going loud and soft, I m never worried about the beats, I just want to play the song. In drums, not a lot of people think about this, but you never want to do too much and you never want to do too little. It has to be enough for the congregation. It s always about the congregation. EDITOR: What are your tips to improve the hands technique? SAM SHAJI: Oh, hands technique. Every drummer has the basic things they need to do. If you are right handed, your left hand is always going to be your weakest and if you are left handed, your right hand is going to be the weakest. There is this metronome technique that I used to do, I need to do it more. You basically play doubles with your left hand. But I m usually trying to make sure my left hand is ok. EDITOR: What are some of the most important instruments you use? SAM SHAJI: Obviously the drums and I also play the bass drum during cottage meetings. At your wedding, I played the Cajon. EDITOR: What other musical instruments do you play? SAM SHAJI: I m in the school band and the marching band and I play the clarinet. Calvary Indian Fellowship June

5 Men s Fellowship BY JUBY VARGHESE Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brothers to dwell together in unity. Psalm 133:1 core reasons for the successful growth of many spiritual organizations. Let s join our hearts in upcoming men s fellowship and make it a success. Calvary Indian Fellowship conducted its first men s fellowship on June 22, 2016 at Bro. Rejimon Daniel s house. Men s fellowship is a time of encouragement and spiritual growth by spending time in prayer. CIF s men prayed about various issues affecting our community and churches. This meeting made us feel the burden of caring and praying for fellow members more than ever. It is imperative that we continue to conduct men s fellowship regularly and by the grace of our Lord may many more join us. Fellowships like these are one of the Women s Fellowship BY SINDHU CHERIAN The first Ladies Meeting of Calvary Indian Fellowship was held on June 7, 2016 presided by Pastor Simon John. The guest speaker was Sister Mini from Neyyatinkara, Kerala, India. Her message was based on Ephesians 1: 17 and 18; I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in His holy people. This is a prayer of enlightenment by Paul for believers. God wants us to know the hope of His calling and to take a look at what is waiting for us in heaven. Hope of His calling means that he took the initiative for our salvation. It is the certainty of increased blessing and joy in Christ, beginning now and lasting through all eternity. She stressed on the fact that at the end of the day, what you have done for the kingdom of God is what matters. 5 Calvary Indian Fellowship June 2016

6 Youth Fellowship BY SIJO SAMUEL Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 We live in a devious and challenging world. Much to our dismay, our children are subject to harsh moral and ethical challenges which can leave them stranded in their own consciousness. To help them scale those walls, it is important to teach them the core values the scripture says. We, at Calvary Indian Fellowship, provide such opportunities to develop Biblical ethics by helping our children dive deeper into the The Word and also discover their talents in music, public speaking, acting, media and various other areas. As a body of Christ our goal is to portray the love of Jesus through our children. On that note, here is an overlay of our past youth fellowship; started with prayer and our children ministered to us during a short time of worship. Next up, the Sunday School teachers amused us with their spin on a Modern Day Good Samaritan skit which showcased genuine compassion from someone we least expect. There is no youth event without our vibrant toddlers singing their favorite number and the elementary kids reciting their verses. To add flavor to the event, our high school girls danced to a devotional Hindi song, which was truly entertaining. The activities that followed were speech, Bible quiz, a melodious duet by the adults and an inspirational thought by our Pastor. Finally, we closed with prayer thanking God for every opportunity that comes our way. MARANATHA. Quick Humor! The Rev. Billy Graham tells of a time early in his ministry when he arrived in a small town to preach a sermon. Wanting to mail a letter, he asked a young boy where the post office was. When the boy had told him, Rev. Graham thanked him and said, If you ll come to the church this evening, you can hear me telling everyone how to get to heaven. I don t think I ll be there, the boy said. You don t even know your way to the post office. Kids Cooking Corner Mango Ice Cream Recipe 1 can mango pulp 1 tub whipping cream 1 container vanilla ice cream 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder 1 handful pistachios (coarsley chopped) 1. Whip the ice cream, whipping cream and mango pulp. 2. When well blended, combine the cardamom and pistachios. 3. Pour into a dish and freeze for 24 hours. Enjoy! Calvary Indian Fellowship June
