Week 2 Elementary (22.6) - July 8/9 The Wicked Tenants Bible Passages: Matthew 21:33-45 Main Point: God will judge those who reject Jesus. Big Picture Question: Why did Jesus tell parables? Jesus told parables to teach people about God and His kingdom. Key Bible Verse: Mark 6:34- When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things. Leader Preparation Your role as a leader in the classroom is the most important role in the Loop as you are the direct connection to the whole reason we gather - to share the love of Christ with kids at Park! If you are not prepared to lead well in your service, then that affects the experience of the children in your care. To help prepare for this lesson, use the following study guide to set the context for this week s lesson. And don t forget to pray before, during and after! A couple of days after Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem and the day after He cleansed the temple, Jesus returned to the temple complex and began teaching. The chief priests and elders questioned Jesus. Who gave You this authority? they asked. These religious leaders did not want to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. So Jesus told them parables to get them thinking and to teach them about Himself. The parable of the wicked tenants illustrates the story of Israel s history. As you teach kids, help them connect the story to what happened in Israel s history. First, the landowner is God the Father. He chose to bless the world through Abraham s family, the people of Israel. The vineyard is Israel. The tenants are the leaders of Israel. Throughout history, God sent the Old Testament prophets to speak to God s people. But they did not listen to the prophets. Like the tenants of the vineyard, Israel s leaders persecuted the prophets. So God the Father sent His Son, Jesus. Jesus knew that the people were going to kill Him like the tenants killed the landowner s son. Jesus led the leaders to conclude themselves what would be fair: that the landowner would punish the tenants and find workers who respect Him. God too is just. God will judge those who reject Jesus. He planned to choose a people who respect and trust Him those who have faith and form a community of believers from every nation to live under His righteous leadership. Those who encounter Jesus can either accept and trust Him or walk away and reject Him. No one who meets Jesus will walk away unchanged. Pray that God would change the hearts of the kids you teach so that they would come to trust in Jesus, the Son of the loving and just Master, who wants everyone to come to repentance. (2 Pet. 3:9)

Welcome // (15 minutes) Leaders: Pay attention to kids as they enter the room and be sure to greet them with a big smile! Make sure that you make each kid feel special when they arrive each week. Invite them to come sit with you and ask the discussion question below, allowing every child the chance to share. Arriving Discussion Younger As kids arrive, ask them to describe a time they disobeyed their parents. Did they face any consequences? What were they? Older As kids arrive, invite them to share about a situation that didn t seem fair. Ask kids to describe what is fair. How do they decide what is fair or unfair? Say: In our story today we will learn about a parable Jesus told to explain how God feels about people who reject His ways. We all disobey sometimes. How does God feel about disobedience? Coloring Page/Activity Page Younger Invite kids to complete the Vine Words activity page. Instruct them to find and circle the words from the word bank. Say: The words you circled in the word search are all important parts of the Bible story we will hear later today. Make sure you pay close attention to find out what these words have to do with the parable we are learning about. Older Invite kids to complete Accept and Reject on the activity page. Kids should unscramble the names of books of the Bible. Kids should fill in the numbered boxes to decode the Bible story main point. Provide Bibles to help kids. Say: Today we will hear a parable that teaches us that God will judge those who reject Jesus. Pre-Lesson Activities (Optional) Option 1: Follow the vine Use yarn to mark a path around the room. Wind it around chairs, under tables, and over any other obstacles in your space. Use tape to secure the path. Challenge kids to follow the vine from one end to the other. Say: Our story today is about men who worked at a vineyard. A vineyard is like a farm for growing grapes. We call it a vineyard because grapes grow on vines. What do you think men who work at a Option 2: Tower game Use the rectangular wooden blocks to create a tower. Position three blocks side-by-side horizontally to form the first story. Then add three perpendicular blocks side-by-side to create the second story. Alternate the direction of the blocks for each story until the tower is 18 stories tall. Invite kids to play a construction game. Explain the rules: On a player s turn, he will remove any block from the tower below the top story. The player 2

vineyard would do if the man who owns the vineyard asked them for the grapes they had grown? must then add the block to the top of the tower. Players may only touch the tower with one hand at a time. A player s turn ends when 10 seconds have passed or the next player touches the tower, whichever happens first. The game ends when the tower falls. Say: How did you decide which blocks to move? What made you decide if a block could not be moved? In today s Bible story, Jesus talked about Himself as the cornerstone. In a building, the cornerstone is the most important stone. We ll find out more soon. TRANSITION TO LARGE GROUP LESSON Large Group // (25 minutes) Opening Time: Use this time to welcome all of the kids to Loop Kids this weekend! You can open this time by asking the group if anyone has any epic week highlights or asking a fun group question! Songs: Choose 2 songs to sing at the beginning of your large group time. If you have older kids in your group, invite them to come to the front to help lead the others! Ask the group why we sing songs of praise and worship each week? Answer: To praise God for who He is and what He has done for us! Visitors & Birthdays: Ask the group if there are any first time visitors today. If there are, have them stand and introduce themselves (share their name, age, and a fun fact like favorite ice cream flavor or pizza topping). Then, ask if there are any kids in the group that have a birthday this week. If you have any kids with a birthday, invite them to stand and sing happy birthday as a group. Then let them pick a toy out of the prize bucket! Offering: As you move into the time to collect offering, ask the group why we collect offering each week. Help them come to realize that we should give back to God because He has generously given to us. Not only has He blessed us with physical and material things like health, food, and a home, but even more so He has met our deep spiritual needs of a Savior to forgive our sins! Encourage them to see the many reasons we can generously give back to God. Share that when we give to the offering box in Loop Kids, our money and tithes go to help sponsor our friends- Vivian, who lives in Kenya, Africa, and Birat, who lives in India. It helps provide them with money for food, clothing, and school. Intro the Lesson: [Large Group Leader enters wearing hiking boots and a large backpack. He or she is carrying a trash bag that is nearly full.] Leader: Well if it isn t my favorite campers! How are all of you doing this fine day? Very well, I hope. You aren t leaving trash all over the campsite, are you? Someone in the site next to mine left a lot of food wrappers and other garbage all over the place. That can be dangerous, as it attracts bears or other 3

animals to the site. Plus it s just plain inconsiderate. Yep, those people were friendly but turned out not to be very good tenants of the campground. A tenant is someone who is allowed to use something by the person who owns it. In fact, there s a parable that Jesus told about some tenants who weren t good tenants either. How would you all like me to tell you about it? [ Allow responses.] Awesome. Big Picture Question If you remember our big picture question, say it with me. Why did Jesus tell parables? Jesus told parables to teach people about God and His kingdom. That s exactly right. As we get ready to hear this parable, think about what Jesus was teaching about God and about God s kingdom. Let s review the parables we have heard so far. Jesus told a parable about how people respond to the gospel. Does anyone remember what that parable was called? ( the parable of the sower ) Jesus taught that not everyone who hears the gospel believes it. Then the parable of the unmerciful servant taught us that God shows mercy to us so that we will show mercy to others. Jesus also told the parable of the good Samaritan because Jesus calls us to love others as He has loved us. We learned through the three parables in Luke 15 that Jesus is the One who seeks and saves the lost. Can anyone tell me why Jesus told the parable about the Pharisee and the tax collector? (God rejects the proud but gives grace to the humble.) Today s Bible story is called The Wicked Tenants. A tenant is someone who lives on another person s property, like a renter. This story is found in the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament. Now, even though Jesus told a story about some people who worked on a farm, you know that like all of Jesus parables the story is actually about much more. Let s find out why Jesus told this parable. Bible Story Video Open your Bible to Matthew 21: Use the Bible storytelling tips on the Bible story page to help you tell the story, or show the Bible story video The Wicked Tenants. Oh my goodness! Those men were not nice at all! The vineyard did not belong to them. The man who owned the vineyard paid them to work the ground and grow grapes, but the grapes belonged to the vineyard owner, not the tenants. When he tried to get his grapes, they responded with violence and cruelty. They even killed the vineyard owner s son. Wait a minute does that sound like a familiar outcome? Who else sent His Son only to have the men kill Him? [ Allow responses.] That s right. This parable is about God and Jesus. God is like the landowner. He created the nation of Israel and gave special responsibility to the religious leaders to help care for the people of Israel and guide them to obey Him and wait for the Messiah, Jesus. However, the religious leaders did not want to listen to Jesus when He finally arrived and began teaching. Instead of listening to Jesus, they hated Him and plotted to kill Him! Jesus was explaining to the people that He is the One God sent to bring people to God. Just as the people said that the landowner in the parable should punish the wicked tenants, we know that God will judge those who reject Jesus. Christ connection 4

The next part of Jesus teaching can be a little tricky to understand. Jesus compared Himself to a cornerstone. A cornerstone is a stone in a building placed at the corner, where two walls come together. It is important because if the cornerstone is set wrong, it affects both walls, making the whole building wrong. Jesus was explaining to the religious leaders that He is the most important part of God s kingdom. He is the One through whom God s kingdom would be brought to earth. Just as God will judge those who reject Jesus, God will accept those who believe in Him. Jesus importance is shown all throughout God s plan to send Him to die for sin and rescue people like you and me, who could not do anything to rescue ourselves. Key Bible Verse Show the key passage poster. Lead the boys and girls to read together Mark 6:34. Leader: While Jesus was on earth, He taught people many things. Jesus is more than just a good teacher though; Jesus is God s Son. Jesus came because of His love and compassion for us and because of His desire to obey God s plan. Discussion Starter Video Leader: Have you ever needed help but been unwilling to let someone help you? Think about that as you check out this video. Show the Unit 22, Session 6 discussion starter video. Discuss reasons why a person may reject help even if he or she needs it. Why do you think people reject Jesus? What do you expect to happen to people who reject the help they need? Leader: We all have the choice to trust Jesus or reject Him. The Bible teaches that we all are sinners and deserve death. We cannot save ourselves and need Jesus to rescue us. When we believe in Jesus, He forgives our sin and gives us new life. Then we can show other people who Jesus is through our words and actions so they might trust Him and believe in Him too. Invite kids to pray before dismissing to small groups. Leader: Thank You, Lord, for giving us Your Son. Thank You for making the way for us to be rescued from sin. Give us courage to tell the world about You. Use us as part of Your plan to bring more people into Your kingdom. Amen. DISMISS TO SMALL GROUPS Small Group (30 minutes) Bible Story Review: Choose one of the following review activities that best fits your small group. If your campus doesn t have enough kids to do either of the activities, feel free to just use the review questions as your review time. As often as you re able to, encourage your kids to open their Bible and find the passage to help them become familiar with using the Bible. You can even take time to help familiarize them with using the Bible (finding the Old and New Testaments, using the Table of Contents, understanding the difference between a book, chapter and verse, etc). 5

Younger Distribute a Bible to each kid and help kids look up Matthew 21: Assign roles to different kids and allow them to act out the story. You may want to use costumes or props to help engage the kids. Then, ask the following questions: Who built the vineyard? ( the man who owned the land, Matt. 21:33 ) Who farmed the land and was supposed to take care of the grapes? ( the tenants, Matt. 21:33 ) What did the tenants do to the servants sent by the landowner? ( They beat them, threw rocks at them, and even killed one; Matt. 21:34-36 ) Who did the landowner eventually send to get the grapes? ( He sent his own son, Matt. 21:37 ) What did the tenants do to the landowner s son? ( They killed him to try to steal his inheritance, Matt. 21:38-39 ) What will happen to people who reject Jesus? ( God will judge those who reject Jesus, Matt. 21:42-43 ) Say: In the parable, the landowner sent his son to correct the tenants, but they killed him. Similarly, God sent Jesus to show people how to have a relationship with Him again, but the religious leaders rejected Him and killed Him on a cross. This was all part of God s plan, though. Jesus died to pay the penalty for sin. Anyone who believes in Jesus will receive forgiveness and new life, but those who reject Jesus will be judged by God for their sin. Older Invite a volunteer to sit in a chair at the front of the room. Point out that the volunteer is competing against the rest of the kids. Explain that you will ask a review question. Kids who think they know the answer should raise their hands. The volunteer should choose someone with a hand raised to answer. Then the volunteer should state whether or not she thinks the player s answer is correct. If the volunteer thinks the player is correct and he is, the volunteer earns one point. If he is not correct, the rest of the kids earn a point. If the volunteer thinks the player is incorrect and he is, the volunteer earns one point. If the player s answer is correct, the rest of the kids earn a point. Announce the answer and award points appropriately. Questions: In what section of the Bible can we find this parable? ( the Gospels, the New Testament ) To whom did Jesus tell this parable? ( the religious leaders in the temple, Matt. 21:23 ) Name one of the three things the landowner created in the vineyard. ( a wall, a pit, a tower; Matt. 21:33 ) What fruit was grown in the vineyard? ( grapes, Matt. 21:34 ) How did the tenants treat the landowner s servants? ( They attacked them, Matt. 21:35-36 ) How did the landowner think the tenants would treat his son? ( He thought they would respect his son, Matt. 21:37 ) What did the tenants do to the landowner s son? ( They killed him, Matt. 21:39 ) What did the religious leaders think should happen to the tenants? ( They thought they deserved to die, Matt. 21:41 ) Why did Jesus tell parables? Jesus told parables to teach people about God and His kingdom. Say: Great job, everyone. Jesus told this story about the vineyard and the tenants to teach the religious leaders about Himself. The vineyard is 6

like God s kingdom, and the tenants are like the leaders of Israel. Like the landowner had sent his servants, God sent His prophets. But the people rejected the prophets. So God sent His Son. Do you think the people respected Him? No. The religious leaders rejected Jesus. God will reject those who reject Jesus. Bible Story Activity Younger: Prayer grapes Provide each kid with a green chenille stem and purple construction paper. Instruct the kids to tear off bits of construction paper, each about an inch or two in diameter. Ask the kids to write down the names of friends, family members, or other people they know who may be rejecting Jesus on the different bits, crumple them into small balls, and glue them in clusters to a sheet of white paper. Then they can use their green chenille stems to make a bit of grapevine and glue it to the paper near the top of the grape cluster. Help kids write the Scripture reference for the parable at the top of their papers. Say: In the parable, the landowner wanted to collect the grapes that were his. The wicked tenants killed the son in hopes of keeping the vineyard and its grapes for themselves. In a way, people are like the grapes in the parable. God wants to gather people to Himself. We know that God will judge those who reject Jesus, so we can pray for people who do not yet believe in Jesus to put their faith in Him and be saved. Take your grape clusters home and pray for the people you wrote down. Ask God to gather those people into His kingdom. Older: Pray for Christians in Indonesia Display a map of the world. Point out the location of Indonesia in Southeast Asia. Provide index cards for kids to take notes as you share facts about the country. Suggest kids draw an outline of Indonesia on one side of the card. Indonesia is home to the world s largest Muslim population. Indonesia is made up of thousands of islands. Some Muslims in Indonesia have declared war against Christians living there. Less than 9 percent of the population is Christian. Pray for new believers who are pressured to give up their faith. Say: Men and women risk their lives to tell others about Jesus. We know that God will reject those who reject Jesus. And if people reject Jesus, they will reject His followers. Let s pray for missionaries who face persecution for their faith around the world. Pray that those fighting against believers would come to know and love Jesus too. Key Bible Verse Activity Ask for volunteers to say the key passage from memory. Praise the efforts of each kid who attempts reciting the verse. Then assign each kid a word from the verse and see how fast the group can say it, with each kid saying only his own word in the proper order. Say: When Jesus taught about God and His kingdom, many people were excited to see Him and listen to Him. Jesus had compassion on them. But some people rejected Jesus. Today we learned that God will judge those who reject Jesus. 7

Appendix I: Sharing the Gospel One of the greatest privileges we have as leaders is sharing the Gospel with the kids who come to the Loop! You are encouraged to be prayerful and expectant when looking for opportunities to share the good news, whether it is during the Large Group Lesson or in a conversation in your small group. Use the following guide to share the Gospel, pausing for understanding and answering any questions the child might have. If a child is ready to give their life to Christ, lead them in prayer and let your Coordinator know so we can celebrate together! Ask kids if they have ever heard the word gospel. Clarify that the word gospel means good news. It is the message about Christ, the kingdom of God, and salvation. Use the following guide to share the gospel with kids. GOD RULES. Explain to kids that the Bible tells us God created everything, and He is in charge of everything. Invite a volunteer to read Genesis 1:1 from the Bible. Read Revelation 4:11 or Colossians 1:16-17 aloud and explain what these verses mean Implications: God made you, and you belong to God. God created you to know, trust, and love Him most of all. God is holy and righteous. God s commands are holy and righteous. You must obey God s commands all the time. WE SINNED. Tell kids that since the time of Adam and Eve, everyone has chosen to disobey God. (Romans 3:23) The Bible calls this sin. Because God is holy, God cannot be around sin. Sin separates us from God and deserves God s punishment of death. (Romans 6:23) Implications: You have disobeyed God s commands. You are a sinner. You deserve God s punishment of death and hell. You are helpless to save yourself. GOD PROVIDED. Choose a child to read John 3:16 aloud. Say that God sent His Son, Jesus, the perfect solution to our sin problem, to rescue us from the punishment we deserve. It s something we, as sinners, could never earn on our own. Jesus alone saves us. Read and explain Ephesians 2:8-9. Implications: You must depend on God s mercy in order to be saved. Jesus came into the world to save you. JESUS GIVES. Share with kids that Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again. Because Jesus gave up His life for us, we can be welcomed into God s family for eternity. This is the best gift ever! Read Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21; or 1 Peter 3:18. Implications: Jesus died on the cross to be punished in your place. WE RESPOND. Tell kids that they can respond to Jesus. Read Romans 10:9-10,13. Review these aspects of our response: Believe in your heart that Jesus alone saves you through what He s already done on the cross. Repent, turning from self and sin to Jesus. Tell God and others that your faith is in Jesus. Offer to talk with any child who is interested in responding to Jesus. Implications: God tells you to believe in Jesus and repent of your sins and you will be saved. If you are trusting in Jesus for your salvation, you must follow Him. Jesus has promised that when you die He will bring you to heaven to live with and enjoy God forever. 8

Appendix II: Bible Lesson The following is this week s lesson written out in story form. You can use this if your video doesn t play or if you just want to read the story out loud to your group of kids. If you have mostly younger children, read only the bold words to make it a shorter, easier to understand story. The Wicked Tenants Matthew 21:33-45 Jesus was teaching in the temple. He told the religious leaders to listen to this story: A landowner planted a vineyard. He built a wall around the vineyard and dug a pit for crushing grapes. He also built a tower. The landowner rented the vineyard to some tenants and left the country. When it was time for the harvest, the owner sent some servants to get his grapes. But the tenants grabbed the servants. They beat up one servant, killed another, and threw stones at a third. So the owner sent more servants to his vineyard, but the tenants attacked them, too. Finally, the owner sent his son. He expected the tenants to respect him. But the tenants threw the son out of the vineyard and killed him. Jesus asked, When the owner comes back to the vineyard, what do you think he should do to those tenants? The religious leaders answered, They deserve to die! The owner should rent the vineyard to people who respect him. Jesus replied, Don t you know what the Scriptures say? The stone that the builders tossed aside is now the cornerstone the most important stone of all. God did this, and it is amazing to us. Then Jesus said, So I tell you, God s kingdom will be taken away from you and given to people who do what He commands. Anyone who trips over this stone will be broken to pieces, and this stone will crush anyone it falls on. When the religious leaders heard Jesus story, they knew that Jesus was talking about them. Christ Connection: Jesus told this story to teach the religious leaders about Himself. God sent His own Son, Jesus, to earth but the religious leaders rejected Him. Jesus is the cornerstone the most important One of all. Only He can save us from our sin. 9

Appendix III: Games for Extra Time On the weeks when your service runs long, or if you went through the curriculum quicker than expected, use the following game ideas as an add-on activity! Be sure to not replace the curriculum with only games, but the following activities might come in handy from time to time. All My Friends Who... Supplies: Chairs for all but one person Have kids stand in a circle. Someone (a leader) starts in the middle and says, Hey, all my friends who (something) stand up and recognize! The (something) is something about yourself that is true. Everyone else who has this in common must leave their spot and find a new one. The person in the middle must seek out a spot in the circle. The one who does not find a spot becomes IT. Huckle Buckle Beanstalk (a game from Canada) Supplies: A small object to hide Players begin by facing the wall with their eyes closed while one player is chosen to place a small object on the floor somewhere in the room. On the word go, the players begin to wander (no running) around the room until they spot the object on the floor. Once a player sees the object, they yell "Huckle Buckle Beanstalk" and sit down on the floor.the game continues until one player remains who hasn't yet spotted the object. He or she gets to hide the object for the next round. The Zoo-keeper (a game from Estonia) Supplies: Write out different animals on enough paper slips for each child to have one. Each player is given the name of an animal on a slip of paper. They sit in a circle facing outward. The zoo-keeper walks in the outside of the circle and tells a story about the zoo. When the animal name of a player is mentioned in the story, that player must get up and follow the zookeeper. Soon a great line of players forms in this way. When all the players are in line, the zookeeper tells them to become their animals, and they all imitate which animal they are supposed to be (e.g. a bird, elephant, etc). After a while the zookeeper sits down. When the players notice the zookeeper sitting, they also sit. The player who is the last one to sit becomes the zookeeper, and the game starts all over again. Players will have different identities. Wax Museum One person is the museum guard, and everyone else pretends to be dinosaurs in a museum exhibit. The museum guard closes their eyes, faces away from the crowd, and the dinosaurs come to life. As soon as the guard turns around, the dinos freeze. If the guard spots any movement, the dinosaur is out and must sit down. The last dino standing becomes the museum guard and you can play again. Simon Says One person is chosen to be "Simon" the others stand in a straight line. Simon then calls out an action for the children to follow. It can be anything like touch your toes or jump 10 times on 1 foot, but they must say Simon Says before they call out the action. If they don t say Simon Says before the action and someone does what they say, they must sit down. Play until there is one kid left and they can become the new Simon. Knot Game Have the kids stand in a circle then all move to the center. Have each kid grab the hand of someone across from him or her. You must grab two hands from different people. Once everyone is connected, have each group untangle themselves into a circle without letting go of hands. 10
