2 Wastewatchers under 5s B TASKFORCE Genesis 1,2 Bible Discovery: Story green, blue and white/grey fabrics or large sheets of paper pictures or toys to build up picture of the world (such as individual pictures of the sun, clouds, water, fish, birds, two people: the children could paint or draw these as an extra activity) Adapt the details in the story-script for the pictures or toys that you have available. Settle the children with space on the floor in the middle, so they can all see what you are doing. You may wish to involve them in spreading out the visual aids. Tell the Bible story: In the beginning God made the earth. The earth was covered in water. (Spread out the blue fabric.) It was dark. God said, Let there be light. And suddenly it was light. God said, That s good. And he called the light day and the dark night. That was the first day. Pause and ask: What did God say? Repeat the last few sentences and then continue: God said, That s good. And he called the light day and the dark night. That was the first day. Then God made the sky and the clouds and the rain in it. (Spread out the white/grey fabric and place cloud and rain pictures on it). God said, That s good. That was the second day. Pause and ask: What did God say? Repeat the last few sentences and then continue: God said, That s good. That was the second day. God moved the water together until dry ground appeared. (Move the blue fabric to one side and lay out the green fabric.) God called the dry ground land and the water he called sea. God said, That s good. (Ask, What did God say? By now, the children will be starting to remember: encourage them to answer enthusiastically!) Then God made the plants. He made tall trees. He made beautiful flowers. He made plants to give fruit, like the apple tree. He made strange looking plants, like the cactus. (Place your plants or plant pictures on the green fabric.) God said, That s good. ( What did God say? ) That was the third day. Then God said, Let s put lights in the sky. He made a big light for the day and smaller lights for the night. He called the big light sun, and the smaller lights moon and stars. (Place sun, moon and stars pictures on the white/grey fabric.) God said, That s good. That was the fourth day. ( What did God say? ) God said, Let s make creatures to swim in the sea. He made fish of all sorts. He made big, fast creatures, like the shark. And he made small creatures, like the seahorse. He made strange creatures, like the jellyfish. (Place the sea creatures on the blue fabric.) Then God made birds to fly in the sky. He made small birds that could nest in the trees. He made big birds, like the pelican. He made dull birds and bright birds, like the parrot. The birds flew across the sky, made nests in the trees and laid eggs in the nests. (Place the birds in the sky, trees or ground as appropriate.) God said, That s good. That was the fifth day. ( What did God say? ) Then God made lots of animals. He made big animals, like the elephant; and little animals, like the mouse. He made creatures that crawled, like the spider; and insects that flew, like the butterfly. He made fierce animals, like the lion; and soft furry animals, like the cat and the dog. He made animals to give food, like the cow; and strange looking animals, like the lizard. (Place the animals on the green fabric.) God said, That s good. Then God made people. He made a man and a woman. He called the man Adam and the woman Eve. He told them to look after the world he had made and showed them all the good things he had made. (Place the people on the green fabric.) God said, That s good. That was the sixth day. ( What did God say? ) God had finished all the work he had been doing. So God rested. That was the seventh day. Ask the children what they think God liked looking at on that day, when he 2

3 Day 1 From nothing to something had a rest. Did he think what he saw was good? (Story by Alison Dayer Scripture Union 2007) Bible discovery: Prayer the same fabric and pictures or toys as for Bible Discovery: Story Spread out the white/grey fabric and ask the children to help you put out the things that God made for the sky. Encourage the children to repeat a simple phrase after you, like: Thank you, God, for the sky and everything in it. Repeat for the blue and green fabrics. If you wish you could thank God for particular things he has made. At the end say Amen together. (Adapted from Tiddlywinks: The Big Green Book Scripture Union 2003) Game: Imaginary travels no equipment but it is useful to have enough space to move from area to area Imagine you are at the seaside together: tiptoe over the pebbles, dig in the sand, admire the cliffs, delve into rock pools, paddle in the sea. Talk about the sea, as you imagine that you are in a ferry boat going on holiday or skimming the waves on a yacht. Tell God the best bit about the seaside! Change your scene to a jungle or a forest: tall trees all round you, when you look up you cannot see the sky, just huge green leaves. Push your way through the jungle undergrowth, jump across streams, shelter when it rains hard. Listen for the sounds of animals (arrange for an adult to make sounds like monkeys chattering, birds whistling, frogs croaking, and encourage the children to guess them). Praise God for the jungle! Where else could you go in your imaginations? A desert, the Arctic or somewhere nearby that all the children know? Describe the plants you see, the animals you see and hear, what the weather is like, the different types of soil and water in that area. Tell God what you have been doing! Say this praise shout together, with everyone responding noisily with the words in bold print: Who made the earth? God did! Who made the sea? God did! Who made the plants? God did! Who made the animals? God did! What a great God we have! Wow! (Adapted from Bubbles for Leaders September-December 2004 Scripture Union 2004) Craft: Planting potting compost flowerpots seeds or bulbs (ask advice from a garden centre about easy-to-grow seeds or bulbs or choose reliable seeds, like nasturtiums) tray and water small trowels aprons clean-up and cover-up facilities. Children never tire of planting seeds and bulbs and this activity brings together the creation themes of Genesis 1 and 2. Demonstrate putting some compost in a pot and let the children copy, pushing the seeds or bulbs in gently, and covering over them with a little more compost. (Wash hands immediately!) Discuss what the seeds need to grow: remember they will need light as well as the soil and water. Explain that this is the way God made for plants to grow. Stand the pots in a shallow tray of water, to soak up water to help the seeds grow. Encourage the children to predict what will happen: how will they know if the plant is growing? 4 Wastewatchers under-5s B TASKFORCE Bible: John 2: 1-12 Bible discovery: Story six small non-transparent jugs a huge jug of water red fruit juice or squash a transparent tumbler Put a little juice into the six jugs beforehand. Set them out in a row (making sure that the children cannot see that they have anything in). Tell the story as detailed below and, at the appropriate moment, pour water into the small jugs. Show the children how it has changed colour as you pour a drink into the glass. Before you begin, tell the children that you will need their help because there is a lot of counting in the story. Use your fingers to count the numbers. One day Jesus, his mother, Mary, and all his 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 special friends were at a wedding party. It was a lovely party! There were 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 different sorts of bread to taste; 1, 2, 3, 4 different kinds of fruit; and 1, 2, 3 different kinds of cake. Everyone was very happy. Everyone that is, except for the head servant, who was very worried. All the guests were shouting: We re really thirsty! He had just discovered that all the wine had run out and there was nothing to drink. What would everyone think? They might say it was the worst party they had ever been to. The head servant went and asked Mary what he should do. I know! she whispered. I ll ask my son, Jesus, because he always seems to be able to help people with their problems. Mary went over to Jesus and his 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 special friends. Please can you help these people? Mary said. They ve completely run out of wine. Jesus went into the kitchen and saw 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 empty water jars. Fill all these jars with water, he said, pointing to the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 jars. That s crazy! thought the head servant. We ve run out of wine, not water! But the servants did as they were told. (Pour water into the six jugs.) Soon, they heard an important guest shouting for another drink. Jesus told the servants to take the guest a drink from the water jar. (Pour drink into glass.) To their amazement, they saw that it was no longer water but deep, red wine. (Sample the drink.) Delicious! This is the best wine I ve ever tasted! said the important guest. The head servant looked at Jesus and smiled. Jesus had certainly saved the day. Explain to the children that you did not really change the water into wine. It will not spoil their pleasure to show them exactly what you did and, if feasible, let them experiment themselves as they tell each other the Bible story. Emphasise the difference when Jesus did this: he really could change the water. Why do the children think he could do that? It is because he is God s Son. (Adapted from Tiddlywinks: The Big Blue Book Scripture Union 2002) Bible discovery: Singing and praying musical instruments written music for Jesus love is very wonderful Let the children play instruments as you sing Jesus love is very wonderful through twice. (see page 12 for music setting. Ask the children what amazing thing Jesus did at the wedding. Now sing together: Jesus turned the water into wine, Jesus turned the water into wine, Jesus turned water into wine, O wonderful love! Ask the children if they know of other amazing things that Jesus did and fit them into the song pattern: Jesus helped a man to see again, Jesus helped a man to see again, Jesus helped a man to see again, O wonderful love! Remind the children that Jesus is still with us now and he is still doing amazing things! Sing: 4

5 Day 2 From water into wine Jesus loves us each and every day, Jesus loves us each and every day, Jesus loves us each and every day, O wonderful love! Pray, Thank you, Jesus, for your amazing love. (Adapted from Bubbles for Leaders July-September 2005 Scripture Union 2005) Game: Dancing So amazing God from Light for Everyone CD (or available as a single track download from the online shop) or other lively praise and worship music Ask the children to sit down in a space on the floor and close their eyes. Invite them to sit quietly and listen to some music that is about how amazing God (or Jesus) is. After one or two verses, fade the music and ask the children to open their eyes. Was it hard to keep still and quiet for such lively music? Did they want to move about? Now they can! Craft: Drinking cups plastic cups (reasonably hard plastic will last better and picnic packs may provide several inexpensive colours) or plain party cups (you may need to cover patterns with paper) stickers clear inkjet labels with Jesus is special printed on (optional) drinks Remind the children about the Bible story and the fact that Jesus was at a party. Give the children the cups and stickers and encourage them to decorate the cups. Whilst they do this, talk about how special their cups look. Remind the children that Jesus is special because he is God and can do amazing things. Serve drinks in the cups or allow the children to take them home. (Be aware that inkjet labels are not washable!) (Written by Alison Dayer Scripture Union 2007) Play the music again and this time let the children respond to the rhythm, swaying or dancing or moving in whatever way seems natural to them as they express their feelings about how special Jesus is. To extend this activity, the children could pretend to be different characters in the Bible story and move the way they would to the music: they could experiment being the people getting married, the guests or the servants. 6 Wastewatchers under 5s B TASKFORCE Bible: John 9 Bible discovery: Story eight very simple drawings copied from page 13 The children will enjoy watching, if you are confident enough to sketch the drawings as you tell the Bible story. (You can draw the lines in faintly in pencil beforehand and go over them with a broad pen or paintbrush.) Tell the Bible story, drawing and pointing to the pictures, as numbered. Once there was a man who was very sad. The Bible doesn t tell us what his name was, so I m going to call him Tim (1). Tim was very sad because he couldn t see. He couldn t see the sun in the daytime (2) or the moon at night (3). He couldn t see the smiley faces of his friends (4). He couldn t see green trees (5) and colourful flowers (6). He couldn t see his own fingers (7) or his own toes (8). Tim didn t even know what his own family looked like. One day, Tim heard lots of people coming his way. I wonder what s happening! he thought to himself. Then he heard a kind voice. Don t worry! said the voice. My name is Jesus, and I m going to help you. I am here to do God s work. I am the light of the world. Quickly, Jesus made some mud. Then, very gently, he put the mud on Tim s face. (Health and safety note: make sure that the children understand that ordinarily you should never put mud in your eyes or someone else s!) Yuck! thought Tim. That feels horrible! Now then, said Jesus, I want you to go and wash off the mud in Siloam Pool. Tim carefully washed off the mud in the cool, clear water, and when he d finished he was amazed and delighted (9). Can the children guess why he was so happy now? What do they think has happened? Say, with excitement, that Tim could see! First, Tim saw the light dancing on the water. Then, he looked down and he could see his own toes peeping out of his sandals (8) and his own fingers dripping with water (7). He looked around and he could see the beautiful coloured flowers (6) and the tall, green trees (5). Then he saw the smiling faces of his friends (4), and when he looked up he could see the sun in the sky (2). All of these things were quite new to Tim, so he was very happy and excited. Soon, some of Tim s neighbours came to see what all the fuss was about. At first, they didn t recognise him because he was so happy and his eyes were wide with excitement. What s happened? How can you see? they all asked. It was a man called Jesus, said Tim. He healed my eyes so that I can see. Jesus is amazing. I must find him and thank him. Ask the children to choose the picture they like best from the ones you have shown them. Why have they chosen that picture? (Adapted from Tiddlywinks: The Big Blue Book Scripture Union 2002) Bible discovery: Singing and praying the tune of This little light of mine (kidsource 343 and in many song collections) Ask the children to close their eyes tightly and then open them again. Try this several times. What is different when our eyes are open: what can we see? Talk about how light helps us see clearly, shows the way and makes things bright. Read John 8:12 aloud: Jesus said, I am the light of the world. Sing this song to the tune of This little light of mine : Jesus is the light, shining oh so bright, Jesus is the light, shining oh so bright, Jesus is the light, shining oh so bright, Shining bright, shining bright, he s the light! 6

Explain to the children that we call Jesus light because he shows us how to live his way, he helps us understand things, makes us happy. What else can the children think of? (Adapted from Bubbles for Leaders July-September 2005 Scripture Union 2005) Game: Dark and light darkened room or a tented area (such as a blanket draped over chairs) torches something to discover with the torches (a story Bible such as The Big Bible Storybook, edible treats such as pieces of fruit) Outside, if feasible and safe, or in daylight or a well-lit room, give the children torches to play with and show them how to turn them on and off. The children will soon realise that they cannot see the lights from the torches very well. Consider how you could make them easier to see: have the children got any suggestions? Go into your darkened area and turn the torches on and off. Talk about how the children feel about the dark and how the torches light it up so that they can see. (Be aware that some children may be nervous of the dark and may not want to go into a dark area. Encourage them to stand outside and shine the torch in, but don t insist if they are very unhappy. Others may be confident to go in, if they are accompanied by you or another person.) Remind the children that we need light to help us see clearly. Tell them that Jesus helps us to know how to live and how to understand things, just as torches help us see things in the dark. Encourage the children to search the dark area with their torches to find what you have hidden and then share it together. (Written by Alison Dayer Scripture Union 2007) Craft: Wax-resist painting white wax crayon or candle watery paint and brush cover-up and clean-up equipment large and smaller sheets of paper picture to trace Draw a large picture of Jesus in wax on paper of the same colour. (Trace the picture of Jesus from page 14, if you prefer.) Also prepare individualsized pictures or write the word Jesus on smaller paper, so the children can try this for themselves later. Spread the large picture on a flat surface so the children can stand or sit around it. Look at the paper: tell the children it is a picture and ask them what they can see. Realise that you can help them see the picture more clearly. Start to brush paint over sections of the page: can they see the picture yet? Show the children how excited you are as the picture becomes more visible and you all begin to see Jesus. Mention that in today s Bible story, a man sees Jesus for the first time and Jesus is one of the first people he has ever seen. Allow the children time to brush the paint over their own picture to see what they find. Some children may wish to repeat this, drawing their own hidden picture first. 8 Wastewatchers under 5s B TASKFORCE Bible: John 19 Bible discovery: Story drawstring bag or pillowcase, or ideally a feely box two stones one small wooden cross two similar pieces of fabric (use a different texture to the bag) flowering pot plant Place the stones, crosses and cloth into a drawstring bag. For older children, you could place all the items in at once and ask them to select just one; for younger children, put one of the objects in the bag at a time. Introduce the children to the feely bag or box, explaining that they need to guess the objects by touching and not looking at them. Allow one child at a time to feel an object. Encourage them to talk about what they can feel until they are able to guess what it is. When the item has been identified place it on the floor or on a table where everyone can see it. Then ask another child to identify the next object. When all the items have been identified, explain that they need to be in a special order to tell the story. This order needs to be: cross, fabric, stone, stone, fabric, cross. Let the children help you arrange the items in this order. As you tell the Bible story, point to each of the objects or ask a child to hold them up: Cross: This is a small wooden cross like the big one the soldiers put Jesus on. Jesus died on the cross. Cloth: Jesus friends brought his body down from the cross. They took it away and wrapped it in a special cloth. Stone: They laid Jesus in a cave. They took a huge stone, much bigger than this one, and rolled it in front of the cave. Stone: Something amazing happened to the stone. When Jesus friend Mary came to the cave on the Sunday, the stone had been moved. Who could have moved it? Cloth: Jesus friends went inside the cave and found the special cloth folded up where Jesus had been. But where was Jesus? As a story finale tell the children that you have one more thing to show them that could not go in the feely bag. Show them the flowering pot plant. Tell them: Jesus had come back to life again, just like this plant is alive and beautiful. His friends were able to see and touch him. How do you think Jesus friends felt now? During the rest of the session, allow time for the children to use the feely bag and items, with a leader or on their own, to retell the story. (Adapted from Bubbles for Leaders July- September 2006 Scripture Union 2006) Bible discovery: Prayer This prayer can also be sung, if you know the nursery tune of I like peace, I like quiet. Sit in a circle, with arms folded and heads down. Say or sing twice: I feel sad, I feel sorry, Jesus died upon the cross. Then change the mood by standing up, clapping and dancing as you say or sing twice: I feel great, I feel happy, Jesus is alive again. (Adapted from Tiddlywinks: The Big Yellow Book Scripture Union 2004) Game: I am alive This would be a good activity before the Bible story to help the children understand the concept of being alive. If using the activity after the story, finish by saying: Jesus was alive again. Jesus could smell (breathe in through nose). Jesus could touch (touch different textures). Jesus could see (look around). Jesus could taste (yummy!). Jesus could hear (touch ears).

9 Day 4 From death to life With children facing you, explore our five senses, each time declaring, I am alive! or We are alive! (Be sensitive to children with impairments to any of their senses.) Say: Touch your nose! Can you smell? (Breathe in through your nose.) What can you smell? (Ask children to respond with what their senses are telling them.) I am alive! Whilst the children work, talk about the Bible story, remembering that Jesus died on the cross. Everyone was sad, but not for long. Jesus did not stay dead: God made him alive again. Jesus loves us very much and he wants us to be his friends. (Adapted from Tiddlywinks: Glitter and Glue Scripture Union 2002) Continue: Can you feel your hands? (Touch different textures.) I am alive! Ask: Where are your eyes? What can you see? Cover your eyes. What can you see? Open your eyes. Shout: I am alive! Suggest: Put your finger on your tongue. What do you like to taste with your tongue? Shout: I am alive! Figure 1 Demonstrate as you say: Touch your ears. What can you hear? Shout: I am alive! (Adapted from Tiddlywinks: The Big Yellow Book Scripture Union 2004) Craft: Shiny cross cross-shapes in thick card (see template Figure 1) sticky shapes, stars, and glitter white glue and spreader strands of knitting wool sturdy hole punch Beforehand, cut out crosses from thick card using the template below. Cut the wool into strands approximately 12 cm long. Punch a hole in the centre base of the cross. Encourage the children to decorate the crosses with brightly coloured sticky shapes and glitter. For younger children, thread several strands of wool through the hole in the bottom of the cross, and knot them. Older children will be able to thread them through by themselves but will need help with tying a knot. 9

10 Wastewatchers under 5s BTASKFORCE Bible: John 20: Bible discovery: Story washable ball-point pen elastic bands scraps of fabric or hand puppets scenery from page 15 (copied on to cardboard) Draw a face on each of your thumbs, one for Mary and one for Jesus. Wrap a piece of fabric round your thumb to make suitable clothing and hold it in place with an elastic band. You will find this much easier if another leader helps you! Make scenery for the garden from a piece of card and the picture at page 15. Lean it against your lap and hold your thumbs up in front of it as you tell the story. Settle the children so they can see what you are doing. As you tell the story, bend the thumb that represents the person who is talking. (For a large group, use hand puppets so they can all see the action easily.) Introduce the two characters and briefly explain what they are going to be talking about: Mary thought that Jesus was dead but then she met him in the garden. He was alive! Tell the children the story briefly in your own words which you can then reinforce with the mini-drama. Use this time to explain the practicalities: what a tomb is; why Jesus was there; why Mary wasn t expecting to see him. Help any children new to the group today, to know what has been happening already in the story. Use your thumb-people or puppets to act out the story-script. Create different voices, to help the children know which character is speaking and to hold their attention. MARY: I m so sad. On Friday Jesus, the best friend I ever had, died. We put him here in this garden tomb. I just don t understand. You see, we thought that Jesus was special. That he was God s son. I don t know why he had to die. It was the worst day of my life. Now the tomb is empty, someone has taken him away. Ohhh I m so sad. (Mary cries.) JESUS: What s the matter? MARY: Oh! Are you the gardener? Please sir, if you have taken away my friend, please tell me where he is? JESUS: Mary, don t you know me? MARY: Jesus? Jesus! It s really you. You re alive, this is wonderful! JESUS: Yes Mary, it s really me. Go and tell all my friends that I have come back to life, just as I said I would. Tell them I ll see them soon. MARY: Oh Jesus, of course I will. I can t wait to see their faces! This is the best day of my life! (Adapted from Tiddlywinks: The Big Yellow Book Scripture Union 2004) Bible discovery: Prayer crayons sheets of paper with a large circle drawn in the middle Talk about how great it is that Jesus is alive. It is good news and we can be very happy about it. Give the children crayons and paper. Ask them to draw their face in the circle to show how they feel about Jesus being alive. Hold up the faces so you can all see them and enjoy this praise shout. Say each line loudly and clearly; all repeat. He s with me in the night. He s with me in the night. If not already known, teach them and then sing the original version Jesus love is very wonderful. The music setting is available at page 12. Time yourselves singing all your verses: how long have you spent singing for Jesus? (Adapted from Bubbles for Leaders July-September 2006 Scripture Union 2006) Craft: Easter trees a piece of play dough pressed into a plastic tub a branching twig lots of card egg shapes crayons sticky shapes shiny ribbon This is a traditional Easter decoration idea from Sweden. This could be an activity for the whole group or each child could make their own. Push the branching twig into the play dough in the tub. Decorate the card egg shapes, with crayons or sticky shapes and hang them from the twigs, with the ribbon. Add a ribbon bow to the tub and a label saying Jesus is alive!
