All the cards are made by hand with many different methods, including Sumi-e (Japanese ink painting), stamping and coloring with alcohol or watercolor markers, die cuts, and many other artful techniques. The card crafters use beautiful Japanese washi paper along with colorful and gorgeous scrapbook papers and cardstock. They meet monthly and each member takes a turn leading a new technique, card, or paper craft. The club currently has 11 active members that meet at Beverly s Unique Scrapbooking Store. We currently are not open to new members as space is limited. The Craft Club originally started with the intent for members to learn or hone their card making and paper crafting skills. As people began seeing our cards, they asked if they could buy them. We started off small and had one sale and made $500. These proceeds were donated to the South Sacramento Interfaith Partnership Food Closet. The following year, our club was asked to sell cards at the Sacramento Japanese Film Festival Spring Screening at SJUMC in April and at the film festival at the Crest Theatre in July. Back then, we only sold cards on the first day of the three-day event. We now sell all three days and since that first year, we have sold thousands of cards and other paper craft items. We also sell at the annual food and cultural bazaar. In the nine years we have been making and selling cards and crafts, we have donated over $13,130 to various non-profit/charity organizations (listed below). Members donate SJUMC CRAFT CLUB their own materials in making the cards and crafts and the club provides the envelopes and base cardstock. We enjoy crafting and appreciate all the support SJUMC and this community have given us. Sakura Dayori Page 17 April 2018 Commission on a Way Forward clarifies values as it presents two sketches to bishops DALLAS - What is Christ s way forward for doing mission and ministry in the worldwide United Methodist Church? That is the question bishops pondered during their February meeting in Dallas this week as they received an updated report from the Commission on a Way Forward. In the report given to the Council this week, the Commission shared with the bishops two sketches that carry forward many of the values and principles of the three sketches that were presented to the bishops at their meeting in November. The sketches of these two models represent the values, concerns and feedback we have received since we reported to the Council in November. The two sketches provide avenues for unity, contextualization and mission, said Bishop Ken Carter, one of the moderators of the Commission. Summary of the sketches of the models Here is a summary of the two sketches in process. Details may change based on the work of the Commission at its next meeting. ONE CHURCH MODEL The One Church Model gives churches the room they need to maximize the presence of United Methodist witness in as many places in the world as possible. The One Church Model provides a generous unity that gives conferences, churches, and pastors the flexibility to uniquely reach their missional context in relation to human sexuality without changing the connectional nature of The United Methodist Church. MULTI-BRANCH: ONE CHURCH MODEL This model is grounded in a unified core that includes shared doctrine and services and one Council of Bishops, while also creating different branches that have clearly defined values such as accountability, contextualization and justice. The five U.S. jurisdictions would be replaced by three connectional conferences, each covering the whole country, based on theology and perspective on LGBTQ ministry (i.e. progressive, contextual, traditional branches). Annual conferences would decide which connectional conference to affiliate with; only local churches who choose a branch other than the one chosen by their annual conference would vote to join another conference. During this week s meeting in Dallas, the bishops also heard reports on the impact of both models on pension benefits, the connection, central conferences and fiscal responsibilities. During this week s meeting in Dallas, the bishops also heard reports on the impact of both models on pension benefits, the connection, central conferences and fiscal responsibilities. Council President Bishop Bruce Ough noted that the process of seeking a way forward was grounded in three major values: 1. A renewed attention to our public mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world, especially with those who are not yet a part of our churches. 2. A focus on contextuality in a global church, and our continuing call to learn from each other, listen to each other. 3. Continuing to work with traditional, contextual and progressive values that are present in two models, one that is more aligned with a contextual church with the removed language about human sexuality, a second which differentiates between these values as different branches of one church. 8 Sakura Dayori Page 8 April 2018 Sakura Dayori Page 13 April 2018 Immigration Day On Saturday, February 17, 2018the Sacramento Japanese UMC (SJUMC) hosted Immigration Day, a workshop sponsored by the Sacramento Pentecost Circuit and the South Sacramento UMC Coalition. A combined group of fifty-two people came to hear immigration attorney Thomas Spaniolo speak about the latest information on the changing environment of immigration in the United States. The English language session at 10 a.m. was followed by a hosted lunch at noon, and the Spanish language session started at 1 p.m. Bishop Minerva G. Carcaño was on hand to encourage and welcome participants of the event. Guest immigration attorney, Lisa Kobayashi provided current information as well. Many UM members from churches outside the Sacramento area also attended. The Rev. Motoe Yamada Foor, pastor of SJUMC and Pentecost Circuit leader, welcomed participants. She recounted how the Holy Spirit brought Spaniolo and her together when they happened to be seated next to each other at the Annual Conference Session and she started talking about immigration needs in the circuit, unaware he was an immigration attorney. This set in motion the plans for the workshop. The Rev. Katai Tapa (Oak Park UMC and Tongan-U), offered the opening prayer. For the next ninety minutes, Spaniolo fielded questions and discussed such topics as temporary protected status (TPS) as it relates to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and others, filing for an employment authorization card (EAC) and current lawsuits, and DACA renewals. Of chief interest was information regarding undocumented persons and their rights, or lack thereof, how it affects their families and the actions needed to remain in the country. Also discussed was the abuse of the term chain migration referring to family unification which strictly specifies which family members can be brought over. Spaniolo stressed the need for all immigrants to pay taxes (using tax ID number to file in lieu of a Social Security Number) to prove they are here in good standing, even though, if undocumented, they cannot receive some of the benefits of a taxpayer. A comment was made that an estimated $7 billion is paid into Social Security through deductions from paychecks of undocumented workers from which they will never receive benefits. The Rev. Barbara Firebaugh-Horikoshi (Faith UMC) said grace over the lunch hosted by the SJUMC Mission Committee in conjunction with its Bowling Green Schools monthly family lunch program. Some families from the program joined the lunch and workshop. A cake was provided with Psalm 46:1 inscribed, God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble as a reminder that God is with us! Pastor Pedro Cervantes (Emmanuel UMC) offered the prayer for the afternoon session. The Spanish-speaking participants were very interested and had many questions. Our hope is to collaborate with churches in the greater Sacramento area on a monthly or bimonthly basis in order to reach more people in need of such resources, provide other services, and attract more volunteers. Most of all, we pray for all the people affected by immigration issues and ask for God s continuing guidance. By Jayne Muraki Rasmussen, Lay Leader, SJUMC (featured on the cal nev annual conference website) South Sacramento Interfaith Partnership Update Thank you SJUMC for your continued support for helping to provide the hungry in the South Sacramento area families and neighbors with emergency food.
