UNITED To TRANSFORM The WORLD 2017 Annual Report
UNITED I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be ONE as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete UNITY to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. John 17:22-23, NIV 1984 FROM OUR CEO David Stevens, MD, MA (Ethics) I love reading the book of Proverbs. One of my favorites is, Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another (Proverbs 27:17, ESV). I m drawn to that verse because I learned a long time ago it s nearly impossible to do great things for God alone. God made us to be in fellowship with others. In ministry, we complement each other through our shared vision, but different missions. Coming together in unity, we can do far more than we could ever accomplish alone. One example of how we unite with others is through our annual Healthcare Missions Leadership Summit for mission executives. In 2017, more than 100 representatives from agencies met to share successful strategies and discuss important issues. Each year, this meeting grows to include more mission organizations that are invested in sharing Christ through healthcare missions. Another example is the Global Missions Health Conference held each November in Louisville, Kentucky. Hundreds of organizations come together to promote healthcare missions. Last year nearly 3,000 people were in attendance. They came in small groups, but they left united in their commitment to expand the reach of healthcare missions around the world. And here at CMDA, we continue aligning with like-minded organizations under our umbrella as we unite in our efforts to transform the world. Through your prayers and generous financial support, you also are united with us in spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. Thank you for joining us in ministering to students, residents, graduates and patients across the country and around the world. OUR Mission Christian Medical & Dental Associations motivates, educates and equips Christian healthcare professionals to glorify God. OUR Vision Transformed Doctors, Transforming the World. OUR Core Values Christ-like (Philippians 2:5) Controlled by the Holy Spirit (John 16:13-14) Committed to Scripture (Psalm 119:105) Communing in Prayer (Ephesians 6:18) Compassionate (John 13:34-35) Competent (Matthew 15:16) Courageous (2 Timothy 1:7) Culturally Relevant (1 Chronicles 12:32)
FROM OUR President Al Weir, III, MD The room was filled with healthcare students at the weekly CMDA gathering today. In the short 30 minutes we had, I wanted to explain what it means to be a Christian in healthcare. I explored the Christian truths of time, reality, value and life purpose. I spoke of our relationship with the Creator of the Universe, how He wants to intervene in our lives and wishes us to intervene in the lives of others to bring them into the same relationship. I spoke of our responsibilities toward God, our patients, our colleagues and the world responsibilities that are radically different because we follow Christ. I spoke about the wonderful instrument of science God has given us to navigate our way through the natural world and help those who suffer how science must never define all of reality, but is extremely helpful in defining the part of reality that can be measured. So much to explain and so little time. I ended the talk by sharing about Maria Skobtsova, the Russian atheist who came to Christ when her daughter died from meningitis, who gave her life for the Jews she hid in her home during the Holocaust. Her words are the best description of our life mission as Christians: I am your message, Lord. Throw me like a blazing torch into the night so that all may see and know what it means to be a disciple! CMDA is that blazing torch, thrown by God into the healthcare arena to show the world what it means to be true followers of Christ. I hope you can see this in these stories of dedicated Christ-followers pouring themselves into missions, student ministry, public policy and transformation. I hope the blaze of this torch will ignite you so that you will unite with us in this work, for the lost and broken of the world and for the glory of God. OUR Board President Al Weir, III, MD President-elect Gloria M. Halverson, MD Past President James R. Hines, MD Secretary/Treasurer John H. Gill, MD Gregg R. Albers, MD Peter E. Dawson, DDS Rachel B. DiSanto, MD Krystal Donaldson, BS (Student) Eric S. Edwards, PhD, MD Linda W. Flower, MD Jerome J. Hric, MD Paul K. Lim, MD Amanda J. Lucashu, DO (Resident) John D. Mellinger, MD, FACS Robert D. Orr, MD, CM Charlotte A. Paolini, DO John G. Pierce, Jr., MD Jack R. Pike, BS, PA-C James Sproull, Jr. David Stevens, MD, MA (Ethics) T. 4 in CARING It takes enormous trust for our patients to lie down on the operating table, willingly breathe in the anesthetic gasses that will render them unconscious and believe that the strangers standing over them are not just there for the money. Ultimately, we want our patients to see the love of Jesus in the way we help them, and to place their hope and trust in Jesus. David Thompson, MD His name is Dr. Mugisha Ntiyonza Nkoronko, and he is a second year resident in the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons (PAACS) program at Arusha, Tanzania. His story is quite different from a typical second year resident in a program in the United States. And that s not just because he was born in rural Tanzania. It s also because his desire to become a surgeon dates back to an experience from his childhood. Rural Tanzania, like other sub-saharan African countries, suffers a critical shortage of healthcare professionals, including surgeons. So when Mugisha s father suffered a severe head injury in 1995, there was no local help to be found. He was forced to travel more than 1,000 kilometers to find a surgeon who could drain the blood clot in his brain. That long-ago accident is the motivation that propelled Mugisha to become a medical doctor and begin training to become a general surgeon. It could have resulted in tragedy for his family; instead, it fueled a desire within his heart to get the necessary training to provide surgical care to his own people in his own country who are most in need of help. People just like his father. By 2019, Mugisha will complete his training with PAACS. But he s not simply learning how to be a surgeon. He s also learning what it means to be a Christian surgeon. The training through PAACS is exposing me to both spiritual and professional skills on how to alleviate the physical and spiritual suffering the human body experiences in this world, he said. Because of your support, PAACS has surgical training programs throughout Africa. I am grateful for the surgical and spiritual training I am receiving through PAACS and hope to serve God by becoming the best surgeon I can to care for His children, he said. PAACS is just one of CMDA s various mission outreaches that provide opportunities for healthcare professionals to use their God-given skills to care for others around the world and share the gospel with them. These ministries each meet a specific, unique need, whether it s long-term resources, short-term trips, short-term training and more. But they are all united in their goal to share God s love and transform the world for Him. PAACS now has a total of 12 surgical training programs in 8 countries 69 residents are currently in training PAACS graduate surgeons are now caring for patients in 19 countries in Africa
282 campus chapters and 78 graduate local ministry groups 1,144 student leaders working to engage with their classmates Krystal Donaldson became a follower of Christ at the age of 13 while growing up in Jamaica. But it wasn t until her freshman year at Salisbury University in Maryland that she truly understood what it meant to follow Christ, when an encounter with God freed her from past strongholds. From that point on, she was plugged into church and campus ministries to fellowship with other Christians. When she started dental school at the University of Maryland, she wanted to find that same Christ-focused community. I was really kind of nervous, because I didn t think there would be people [in dental school] who loved the Lord. And I was determined to continue to serve the Lord, she said. That was when she first heard about CMDA, and she knew she had to be involved in during her training. I was completely blown away by how Christ-centered CMDA is and by its desire to assist healthcare professionals to glorify God in their respective fields, Krystal said after researching CMDA and discovering it was committed to integrating the two things she loves the most: the Lord and her calling in dentistry. I thought that the higher up you go in healthcare, the more secular you had to be, she said. The community she found with her local campus chapter and then attending regional and national CMDA conferences made the difference, showing her it was possible to use the education she was receiving to serve God in whatever mission field He placed her. If you are a believer in healthcare, you need to be connected. This community is important for anyone to be involved in, not just students. Krystal Donaldson As she nears the end of her training, her involvement with the CMDA community continues to unite her with other believers. Her local chapter has spent time in fellowship and mentorship with healthcare professionals discussing the challenges they face in healthcare. You go to school and they teach you what you re supposed to do, but they don t have any insight into the love of Christ and actually using healthcare as a catalyst to serve people and share the gospel, she said. And that s what exactly what the CMDA community does in campus chapters and local ministry groups around the country. We have chapters on more campuses than ever before and we are growing more and more united in our efforts to mentor the next generation of Christian healthcare professionals. in COMMUNITY
in SERVICE Four years ago, the CMDA Dental Residency [+] program was just an idea percolating in Dr. Jeff Amstutz s mind. And this year, CMDA s Dental Residency [+] program graduated its first two dentists. It may have started out as just a dream, but that dream grew into a vision and is now a reality. Dr. Elise Rich and Dr. Jennifer Wade both took a chance when they joined this brand new program in Memphis, Tennessee in But they both felt God s call to do more with their careers in dentistry. So they committed the next three years of their lives to serving as residents in inner city Memphis with Christ Community Health Services, where the program is located in partnership with University of Tennessee School of Dentistry and Lutheran Medical Center dental residency program. After all, that s the ultimate goal of the residency to train and equip dentists to provide excellent dental care to the poor domestically and internationally in response to Jesus call to preach the gospel and heal the sick. Elise and Jennifer were the first residents to experience this unique combination of clinical experience and discipleship. And in the last three years since it began, six more residents have joined the program. They now all stand united in their goal to serve others. They both completed their time as residents in 2017, but their commitment to serving the underserved through dentistry is far from over. They both are now faculty within the program, as they continue to build the tradition, make an impact on those following in their footsteps and search for international mission opportunities. We are able to move forward with what God is doing through this program because of the guidance and direction we receive from CMDA, an organization focused on educating, encouraging and equipping young dentists so they might be transformed and help transform the world around them. Jeff Amstutz, DDS, MBA Their lives and the lives of the patients they touch every day have been transformed through this residency. I ve seen transformation in the lives of our residents as they grew in their dental skills, as well as their faith and walk with the Lord as they live and proclaim the gospel through dental care, said Dr. Amstutz. And I ve also seen transformation in the lives of our patients, as tears come to their eyes when our residents pray with them and share the good news of what Christ as done for them. As Dr. Amstutz looks ahead to the future, he is taking steps to grow the program in Memphis and also establish a second residency location in the U.S.
in VICTORY Before last year, Dr. David Stevens had never sued anyone in his life. But this time, there simply was no alternative. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services had issued a regulation that would have required doctors all doctors to perform gender transition procedures on children, even if the doctor believed the treatment could harm the child. And the penalty for violating this regulation was a professional death penalty. It was an unprecedented attack on the healthcare right of conscience and religious freedom in the United States doctors being coerced to violate their religious beliefs as well as their medical judgment. As a physician and as the leader of CMDA, I couldn t stand by and do nothing in the face of this assault against Christians in healthcare, said Dr. Stevens. On behalf of all of our members across the United States, CMDA joined together with The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty to file suit against the federal government in October And just before midnight on New Year s Eve, we received news that affected almost a million people when a federal judge ruled in our favor and granted an injunction, stopping enforcement of this regulation in its tracks. And because our 18,000+ members are spread out across every state, the injunction affects every single healthcare professional in the U.S. We thank God for this verdict and the court s choice to protect our rights of conscience and our medical judgment. Thank you all for stepping forward on this issue. I have lived in Vermont for 36 years and find it a very hard place for the gospel. We are like foreign missionaries up here. CMDA Member Fighting against physicianassisted suicide in 38 states 48 volunteer state directors working to protect healthcare right of conscience 2 new official CMDA Ethics Statements were released It was a much-needed victory on one of the most critical issues of our time. But it didn t stop there. Around the same time, we were also forced to sue the state of Vermont where we have been in an ongoing battle to fight a law requiring pro-life healthcare professionals to counsel or refer patients for assisted suicide. We won that case, but an appeal by Compassion & Choices would have forced doctors to participate. As a result of our lawsuit filed with Alliance Defending Freedom, they dropped their appeal and we declared another victory. These victories would have been difficult for any healthcare professional to accomplish alone, but as we band together united under the CMDA banner, work with our legal colleagues and cover our efforts in prayer, God has done wonderful things. Yes, the battles are great, but our God is greater! By trusting Him and allowing Him to work through you to make the work of CMDA possible, we will see more victories.
