The Diocese of St. Davids Continuing Ministerial Development 2016 Programme
Dear colleagues, I am pleased to introduce this Continuing Ministerial Development programme for the year ahead and to commend it to you and to those with whom you minister in your benefice / local ministry area (LMA). Our residential clergy conference often proves to be a highlight for many and we trust that this year s conference under the theme Be joyful; keep the faith will no exception. With four eminent speakers to instruct and inspire us, we look forward to experiencing ever deeper joy in our own lives and the lives of those whom we are privileged to serve. Such joy in Christ provides a stable foundation when leading our churches in challenging times of change and development. Once again this year we will profit from the expertise of the Revd. John Hancock in helping us to discern God s direction for the diocese and its constituent benefices / LMAs. This valuable input will be augmented by the provision of another residential Leading your Church into Growth (LyCiG) conference under the leadership of the Venerable Bob Jackson and his colleagues. Many benefited from the first LyCiG conference, held in 2014, and we hope that another enthusiastic group of clergy and lay ministers from a number of benefices and LMAs will attend this year, having prayerful expectancy that desires renewal and growth. Later in the same month, we will be delighted to welcome the Revd. Canon Dr. Sandra Millar back to the Diocese as she shares with us the crucial findings of extensive research undertaken on the impact that the occasional offices can have both on individuals, families and communities, and on the growth of our churches. We are called to care for the world and the people entrusted to us. The two CMD days offered either side of Easter emphasise this dual vocation. The Revd. David Rhodes has written extensively on theological perspectives which enable us to reach out with hope in those seemingly chance, often surprising, sometimes demanding, encounters when we meet someone who lives on the margins of our societies. We look forward to the encouragement and challenge that he will give us. More broadly, we recognise that our world also is in turmoil as a result of our changing climate and that we, as those who affirm God as maker and sustainer of all things, are given a particular, theologically-grounded vocation as creation s stewards. Input from colleagues with a particular environmental expertise will aid us in rising to this call. Finally, the theme of health in its broadest sense features prominently. The Revd. Euryl Howells and his colleagues from the Hywel Dda University Health Board will highlight key contemporary issues in healthcare and will assist us in forging stronger links between our hospitals and churches so that together we may participate more fully in the task of bringing health and wholeness. Following on from this, Tim Teeling from the organisation West Wales Action on Mental Health will talk on the conditions that may affect any of us during our lives and there will be opportunity to hear personal stories from those affected by mental illness. The Province has also organised a number of training days across Wales at which the Revd. Dr. Beatrice Brandon, the Church of England Archbishops Advisor for the Healing Ministry, will offer an overview of the ministry of deliverance and provide clear guidance for appropriate action in this sensitive, yet vital, area. Taken together, I hope that these events will provide an energising and worthwhile programme for Continuing Ministerial Development during 2016 that will help to enrich your various ministries. I expect full participation in the programme by all serving clerics and this requirement is shared by my fellow bishops in Wales and beyond, as indicated in the importance given to diligent CMD attendance in the documentation which must be completed if a cleric seeks a post in another diocese. However, if you are unable to attend a particular training commitment, please contact your Archdeacon to explain the reasons for absence and to offer your apologies.

Tuesday 19 April Teifi Suite, Halliwell Conference Centre Revd. David Rhodes Faith in Dark Places For many of us, relating appropriately to people on the margins of society can be challenging. Apart from anything else, there appears to be so little common ground. Homeless people seem different to the rest of us. Especially those with addiction problems. The day explores the common ground we find unexpectedly hidden in the Gospel. We reflect on the words of Jesus that he had come to proclaim good news to the poor and the ways in which we may receive good news from the poor. Difficult pastoral situations don t always have easy answers, but we may find God is helping us to see those situations as less difficult and even enriching. Jean Vanier once said: We are healed by the broken and they reveal to us the presence of Jesus. The question is: how might that happen? Speaker David Rhodes started out as a journalist and became Christian after a chance encounter while covering a news story. He served in parish ministry for a number of years before moving to work alongside homeless people in Leeds. His encounters with people on the margins led to some deep friendships and a number of books on social justice and spirituality. David s most recent book, Finding Mr Goldman, is a contemporary parable about the redemption of an evil man - who receives good news from the poor am 11.00am 12.45pm 1.45pm 3.30pm Eucharist (University Chapel) Morning session Lunch Afternoon session Close
The following CMD day is a provincial event being held in our diocese for all serving clerics. The day aims to provide an overview of the deliverance ministry with regard to both people and places, to suggest some appropriate responses to the most common types of enquiry and to set out key issues including authorisation and accountability, boundaries, guidelines for good practice, multi-disciplinary considerations, ecumenical perspectives, insurance issues, cautions and safeguards. Speaker The Revd. Dr. Beatrice Brandon DD is the Church of England Archbishops Advisor for the Healing Ministry 9.30am 10.10am 11.30am 11.50am 1.00pm Arrival, registration and coffee Welcome: notices, introductions and opening prayers Session 1: an introduction to the deliverance ministry (DM) the most common types of enquiry, and suggestions for appropriate responses Session 2: boundaries, guidelines, resources, the wider DM scene and emerging trends Lunch (provided)* 1.50pm Session 3: group work on case-studies to help integration of the contents of sessions 1 and pm 3.20pm 3.50pm Tea Session 4: plenary A Service of Thanksgiving for the Deliverance Ministry * This will be a simple meal of sandwiches and fruit, with vegetarian options offered. 7 Note on attendance The Church in Wales requires all serving clerics to attend one of the sessions being offered across Wales. It is assumed, therefore, that all clerics from the Diocese of St. Davids intend to attend on 18 May in Carmarthen. If you are unable to attend this event then please contact Ainsley Griffiths in order to make arrangements to attend one of the other events, as detailed below: Wednesday 13 April Glasdir Business and Conference Centre, Plas yn Dre, Llanrwst, LL26 0DF Wednesday 13 July Cardiff Metropolitan University, Llandaff Campus, Western Avenue, Cardiff, CF5 2YB Tuesday 20 September International Pavilion, Royal Welsh Showground, Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, Powys, LD2 3SY
Monday 27 June Thursday 30 June The Royal Agricultural University, Cirencester, Gloucestershire, GL7 6JS Clergy Conference 2016: Be joyful, keep the faith Speakers The Revd. Professor Densil Morgan Professor of Theology, University of Wales: Trinity Saint David The Revd. Dr. Peter Waddell Dean of Chapel, University of Winchester Dr. Meg Warner Teaching Fellow in the Department of Theology & Religious Studies, King s College, London The Revd. Dr. Catherine Wright Tutor in Christian History & Spirituality and Dean of Women, Ridley Hall, Cambridge Amid all the changes and chances of this fleeting world, including the various challenges and opportunities which the Church is invited to embrace in every generation, the call to participate more fully and vibrantly in the eternal joy of the blessed Trinity resounds. How then do we understand and receive that summons to joy which flows through Scripture and the Christian tradition? How might the vocation to live joyfully shape our lives individually and corporately so that the world might know the Gospel we proclaim truly to be good news? We shall be privileged to welcome into our midst several esteemed writers and speakers having expertise in a range of theological disciplines to help us to explore these vital issues. Further details of the timetable, together with registration information, will be circulated around Eastertime.
Wednesday 7 Friday 9 September University of Wales: Trinity Saint David (Lampeter Campus) Leading your Church into Growth Conference (LyCiG) The LyCiG residential training course is now in its 21 st year, with hundreds of clergy and other church leaders attending every year. There is an annual national course open to all but also several dioceses are offering the course to their clergy and leaders in any given year. This is the second course for St Davids, following the successful conference at Aberystwyth in LyCiG is designed for clergy and lay leaders from across different traditions who are looking for help and encouragement in leading their churches into growth. The course to be held in our diocese would be particularly relevant for Local Ministry Areas, whether they are already well-established, new and currently taking shape, or planned for some future date. The course takes the form of an open seminar with interactive talks and practical exercises. Each course is led by a selection of members of the experienced LyCiG team, who are mainly practitioners from a mix of Anglican traditions. Training sessions are interspersed with opportunities for worship and reflection. The response from course members tends to be overwhelmingly enthusiastic. Typical comments from evaluation forms include: I wish I had come years ago - this course should be standard for all clergy I have come home charged and ready to go There were things worth taking away from every session All clergy should come on this course I am going back to my parish refreshed and inspired, with loads of enthusiasm I found the whole course very useful and inspiring.. Plenty of food for thought Content superb! Although the LyCiG team discovered that churches do tend to grow numerically in the years following their clergy or leaders attending a course, it was also clear that much more could be achieved if whole church communities could be given the opportunity to share in the experience of LyCiG training. So a new version of the course LyCiG-Local has now been published for local church use, and the residential course has been re-vamped to match up with the LyCiG-Local sessions. All leaders on the residential course should find it valuable in itself but we hope that many will also feel able to lead LyCiG-Local courses back home in the year following the residential. LyCiG-Local has a full set of resources, including a DVD, to make delivering this as straightforward as possible. It is hoped that this new and powerful combination of a residential and a local course will enable every church to flourish and grow in the future. Leadership Team Fr. Damian Feeney Ven. Bob Jackson Revd. Dr. John Marsh Revd. 10 Wednesday 28 September Teifi Suite, Halliwell Conference Centre Revd. Canon Dr. Sandra Millar Every step of the way: making the most of the occasional offices This training day will be based on extensive research that has been undertaken recently by the Archbishops Council of the Church of England on the impact ministry surrounding baptism and funerals can have. (See and for more details). Normally this is presented in two separate days but Sandra has agreed to offer both aspects in condensed form for us. Baptism: New research and resources around baptism are enriching this key ministry where we meet families for their first steps on their journey of faith and are having an impact on church growth. We will explore major new research findings emerging from the Funerals Project so as to: Discover exciting new resources to help support our baptism ministry; Discover how the new Church of England baptismal liturgies are making a difference; Learn about new baptism preparation resources which were published in Funerals: In our funeral ministry we are privileged to show God s love and share God s story with thousands every year. Recent research and resources are enhancing these crucial encounters. During the day we will: Explore major new research findings emerging from the Archbishops Council Funerals Project; Discover exciting new resources to help support funeral ministry; Hear how GraveTalk is helping to break the taboo around death, dying and funerals. Speaker The Revd Canon Dr Sandra Millar is Head of Projects and Development for the Church of England Archbishops Council. Formerly Children s and Families Adviser for the Diocese of Gloucester, she is the author of a number of books on ministry to children and families. Sandra facilitated a very well-received training day on ministry to families in the diocese in March 2014 and we are delighted to welcome her back. 9.00am 9.40am 12.00pm 12.15pm 1.15pm 2.00pm 4.00pm Eucharist Session 1: Baptism matters Short coffee break Session 2: Come back after Lunch Session 3: Taking funerals seriously Close
Wednesday 19 October Teifi Suite, Halliwell Conference Centre Revd. Euryl Howells and colleagues Together for Health Care across the Life-course Caring professions integrate with people at all stages in life from the cradle to the grave. This provides a contextual framework for health themes within the hospital setting and community. Ill health affects us all, from long-term chronic progressive disease or a life-threatening illness, to the short-term recoverable. The journey has its fears, apprehensions, anxieties with lone travelling. The NHS and faith communities should sing from the same hymn-sheet demonstrating effective team working that centres on quality person care. The day will outline the work of the Chaplaincy Department in a 21 st century context and draw in others with differing specialisms to consider other issues. Multi-disciplinary teams will highlight work in palliative care and in mental health services with emphasis on the community. Organ donation is also pertinent and relevant and will be considered both from a donating and receiving angle. Finally, we can examine further developing partnerships between chaplaincy and the parochial teams. As the song writer and singer Paul McCartney said: I love to hear a choir. I love the humanity... to see the faces of real people devoting themselves to a piece of music. I like the teamwork. It makes me feel optimistic about the human race when I see them cooperating like that. Speaker The Revd. Euryl Howells is Senior Chaplain with the Hywel Dda University Health Board and has extensive experience of hospital chaplaincy in Wales and England and of the key issues relating to health and wellbeing in the contemporary context. As a former parish priest he is well placed to help us make the links between the (often short-term) care people receive in hospital and the ongoing care which our churches can help provide. 9.15am 10.15am 11.30am 11.50am 1.05pm 2.00pm 3.15pm 3.35pm 4.50pm 5.00pm Eucharist with healing as the theme Session 1 (title to be confirmed) Session 2 (title to be confirmed) Lunch (please bring a packed lunch or purchase a meal from the university cafeteria) Session 3 (title to be confirmed) Tea Session 4 (title to be confirmed) Concluding remarks Close
Tuesday 22 November Wilfred Fleming Room, Halliwell Conference Centre Tim Teeling from West Wales Action for Mental Health Mental Health Awareness The purpose of the day is to raise awareness of the nature and impact of mental health issues by: Describing the terms mental illness and mental health; Identifying common mental health diagnosis; Discussing recovery for those experiencing mental illness; Challenge stigma associated with mental illness; Become aware of own well-being. Speaker Tim Teeling has worked in the mental health field for over 25 years, as a nurse in day and in-patient settings and as a community nurse, together with work for West Wales Action for Mental Health (WWAMH) for 15 years in many capacities. He has a diagnosis as bi-polar but has been well for over 5 years. Tim has a degree in Theology and is currently working towards his MTh, as well as developing a Spirituality and Mental Health project within WWAMH. If you would like any further information about Tim or the work of WWAMH, please contact him on tim@wwamh.org.uk am 11.00am 1.00pm 2.00pm 4.00pm Eucharist Morning session Lunch Afternoon session Close Please note that this day is strictly limited to 20 participants.
