To spread its light from age to age shall be our chief endeavor. Yes, indeed! Through life it guides our way; in death it is our stay. No question about it! Lord, grant, while worlds endure, we keep its teachings pure throughout all generations. Just how are we going to do that? Might I suggest and wholeheartedly recommend that we gather each Sunday, not only to worship our gracious God, but to stay and study his errorless Word. Then God s Word, passed on to our generation, will do exactly as we sing it will fortify and encourage us as we continue to pass it to the next generation. Sunday School, Teen Class, and Adult Bible Class begins on Sunday, September 16. See you there! By the way, in the next several issues of The Gloria Dei Grapevine we will look at various hymns from our hymnal, Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal, to remind us of some remarkable truths based on God Word. I pray that you enjoy and benefit from them. Lord Jesus Christ, the Church s Head Lord, Jesus Christ, the Church s head, You are her one foundation. In you she trusts, before you bows, And waits for your salvation. Built on this rock secure, Your church shall endure Though all the world decay And all things pass away. Oh, hear, oh, hear us Jesus! Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 536, verse 1 Pastor Johann Mentzer ( ) was the author of this week s devotional hymn. He carried crosses that few can imagine. During his ministry, his prince in Saxony, Germany, joined with Peter the Great of Russia to wage war against Sweden. The most promising young men of Pastor Mentzer s parish were being siphoned into the war machine. The military funerals followed. Pastor Mentzer s first wife, Eva Maria, died while giving birth to twins. He was left, a broken-hearted singleparent, with six children to raise. In 1704 he married Anna Magdalena. The infant mortality rate at that time was about 60%. But of the seven children Anna bore him, only one survived. Within three weeks, Pastor and Anna stood at the graveside of four of their children. Oh, my God, he prayed. You allow one painful distress after another only for the high praise of your name! It was during this time that Pastor Mentzer wrote his most enduring hymn: O That I had a Thousand Voices (CW 194 and 242). Of the 40 hymns he wrote in his lifetime, almost all of them fell under the categories of Cross and Comfort or Praise and Thanksgiving. And is it any wonder? Praise and thanksgiving can only come from the unshakable knowledge that the cross Continued on page 3

3 Lord Jesus Christ, the Church s Head Continued from page 1 of our Savior is our only lasting comfort! Three hundred years later, our distresses, though perhaps not as severe, are not so very different than theirs. We still stand, red-eye over a mound of freshly dug earth. We turn restlessly on our bed consumed by trouble that belongs to tomorrow. But greatest of all is our guilt before a holy God and our liability to eternal punishment. It took nothing short of the holy, precious blood and the innocent sufferings and death of our Lord Jesus to pay the price of our freedom from death and raise us to life everlasting! Our praise for the strong medicine of Jesus cross is reflected in the stout, biblical imagery and humble, plaintive prayer of that first verse. God s truth then leads us confidently to sing the closing verse: And for your gospel let us dare To sacrifice all treasure; Teach us to bear your blessed cross, To find in you all pleasure. Oh, grant us steadfastness In joy and distress. Lord, for your mercy s sake, Let us by grace partake Of endless joy and glory. Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 536, verse 4 Choir Practice will begin Monday, September 17. Choir meets every Monday at 7 pm. If you are interested in joining please see Kay Himm. The next Men s Breakfast and Bible Study will be on September 15, at 8:00 am. There is a sign up sheet on the bulletin board.

Our first meeting will be held on September 9. Our first District event, the annual Archery Campout, will be held October at Killarney Lutheran Campground in Onsted, MI. Look for more information on our bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall. It seems strange to think about Christmas while I sit here with the air conditioning running, but it s going to come faster than we can imagine. Ladies, start thinking about hosting a table for our annual Ladies Advent by Candlelight. This year it will be held on Thursday, December 6. It really is a wonderful way to spend the evening and share the birth of our Savior with the special women in your life.
5 Piano Fund $9, $8, $7, $6, $5, $2, $4, $3, $2, $1, At our June Voters' Meeting a Piano Fund was established to purchase a new Yamaha Clavinova CVP705 to replace our present Clavinova since the key striking pressure and technology is greatly challenged. The MSRP of the CVP705 is *9, If you would like to contribute to this please mark SPECIAL on your envelope and write PIANO. Remember, these gifts should not replace your regular, generous GENERAL FUND offering. Our goal is to have the new Clavinova here by mid- September when choir begins, November 3, 2018 The Capitol Theatre 7:00 pm Since giving up his job as a grocery truck driver in 2002, Tim Hawkins has been establishing himself as one of the most in-demand comedians in the country. With 3000,000,000 video views online and over 100 sold-out concerts every year, his Jackwagon Crew has grown into a revolution of multi-generational proportions. Tim s gut-busting comedy show entertains the entire family while doubling down on the funny, a daunting task in an age where the obscene has become routine. His act is one part gifted + 2 parts twisted the only certainty being his on the nose observations that expose the ridiculousness of daily life while marveling in its hilarity. The perils of marriage, homeschooling, and growing up in the Midwest may not exemplify the rock star life, but they make for really good punch lines. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall
