EDITORIAL THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR ISN'T ALWAYS We have a lot going on at Central over the next two months to keep you busy and most importantly we have a lot of opportunity for you to get connected in meaningful ways. Andrew Pletṯ Communications Pastor Central Community Church According to recent studies, the number one growing epidemic in our society today is loneliness. We are emotionally distant and disconnected like never before even though we are connected like never before through technology and social media. The irony seems to be that more we do and the larger our social circle becomes, the greater our battle with loneliness gets. Here is the tension of this season and one that we are keenly aware of here at Central. While we want you to take advantage of all of the great opportunities in the life of our church, and we also want you to be able to deeply grow in your faith and connect with others in a meaningful way. There are a lot of things going on at Central over the next two months in particular. In December we have two CentralKids productions happening; One at our Scott St location on Sunday December 8th (see opposite page for details) and another at our Niagara Falls Campus on Saturday, December 14 (see previous page for details). We have a 60's Plus Christmas Banquet on December 3, A Young Adults Christmas Banquet, A Youth Banquet, 4 Christmas Eve services and a trio of amazing guest speakers live at each Campus on December 29. December is a full month! Our new year begins with a series called Multiply, Encounter Nights in Niagara Falls, and the official 8 THE LOOP - A MAGAZINE OF CENTRAL COMMUNITY CHURCH launch of our Scott St. Capital Campaign. Add to that our Jr. High retreat and our Partner Renewal focus and it is easy to feel overwhelmed by everything going on. At a church as big as ours it is easy to feel isolated and alone, but it doesn't have to be that way. We have dedicated a tremendous amount of time, process and human resource into opportunities for you to grow in your faith and connect with others in meaningful relationship. If we were to use church words to describe it we would say that it is our discipleship process, but we don't use that word often simply because people with very little church background don't know what that means. Beginning January 21 you need to block Tuesday nights off on your calendar. Here at our Scott St. Campus we have an extensive amount of opportunities to learn about Jesus, grow in your faith, receive support, connect with others and use your gifts and passions as a volunteer. You don't have to walk alone, and we're putting more time and energy into helping your grow spiritually, emotionally and relationally than we've ever done before. If you want to find out more, just stop by our CentralConnect booth at any one of our campuses and we will be sure to help you get connected as soon as possible.

THE LEAD PASTOR The Christmas Myth A look at our December series and what you can look forward to as we gear up for another great Christmas season. Bill Markham - Lead Pastor of Central Community Church It is impossible to escape the image of Santa Claus in our culture today. The image of Santa Claus is a permanent fixture in our modern Christmas Celebration. We force our kids to sit on Santa's knee at the Mall and say ho-ho-ho while handing out gifts. We incorporate Santa Claus in the decorations around our houses and drink Coke with his picture on it. So, where did he come from and why does it matter? The true story of Santa Claus begins with a man named Nicholas, who was born during the third century in the village of Patara, on the southern coast of Turkey (You can find the full history of St. Nicholas in the article on page 16). His wealthy parents, who raised him to be a devout Christian, died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young. Obeying Jesus' words to "sell what you own and give the money to the poor," Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, sick, and suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God and was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man. Bishop Nicholas became known throughout the land for his generosity to those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships. He was a defender of the Truth and a devoted follower of Jesus. So, how did this godly man become the rosy cheeked, red satin and white cotton clad, sleigh riding, jolly, home invader? Time has a way of eroding the true meaning and purpose behind events. We, for whatever reason, like to add details to our stories. The big fish we caught grows inches longer, the crises we survived mounts in intensity, and the heroic deed grows in leaps and bounds every time we regale to our friends and family the re-tellings. Which makes me wonder, have we lost the true meaning of Christmas? Have we mythologized what actually happened two thousand years ago when a baby was born in a humble manger in a remote village called Bethlehem? This month, we are going to explore what really happened that first Christmas night. We will look back at the original context of the story and what it meant for those who first witnessed it and as a result, what this should mean for us today. We are going to explore the simple, yet profound reality, that Christmas is all about JESUS!

OUR FINANCES Operations Update How our operations are impacting and enabling growth and powerful ministry at Central Mike Hicks - Associate Pastor: Operations Central Community Church mikehicks@centralcc.ca As we close out 2013 my mind is racing to recount all of the amazing things that God has done in our Church. Over the past year we have seen large numbers of people give their lives to Jesus, get baptized and become part of LifeGroups at Central. We have set multiple attendance records at our campuses and we continue to grow at a staggering rate. We have traveled the world to bring the hope of Jesus to Africa, India and Ecuador and this past spring our Scott St. Campus voted 97% in favour of purchasing new land and beginning the journey of developing that land for the next generation at Central. This has been an amazing year, and I am proud of our Operations Team and their very important role in the current and future growth of our church. It is our Operations ministry that provides the necessary organizational structure as well as policies and procedures that enable our church to grow and engage in life-giving ministry. Thank you to all of the staff and volunteers who gave their time, expertise and energy to the different teams within our Operations department. In fiscal year 2013, Central Community Church established a weekly budget of $48,800 to maintain and improve our ministry involvement both in the Niagara Region, Ontario and around the world. To date this year we have given, as a percentage of budget performance, an amount equal to 96.3%. You might be thinking, What does that mean, Mike? 96% is pretty good! Let me answer that question using an old Star Trek analogy (Thank you in advance for letting me geek out a bit.) The engines on the Enterprise need 100% power for the ship to run at full speed and maintain acceleration. Captain Kirk calls engineering and says, We need more power Scotty! The Klingons are gaining on us. Scotty replies, I'm giving you all we ve got Captain but our power levels are only at 96%!" The Captain replies, Well do something Scotty you have to find us more power! 12 THE LOOP - A MAGAZINE OF CENTRAL COMMUNITY CHURCH The 3.7% Central is missing in our budget results in a loss of acceleration as we drive toward our destination. You are part of a church that has radical faith, an aggressive vision for the future and extravagant generosity with mission giving. We are counting on you more now than ever to help us run at maximum speed as we finish off this year and move into There are currently several different ways for you to give toward the vibrant ministries happening at Central s three campuses. 1) Debit Or Credit Card: Available at Central Info (Scott & NF only) 2) Automatic Withdrawal: This is a fantastic way to give! Contact our accounting department for more information (accounting@ centralcc.ca) 3) Online: Give online anytime through Central's secure PayPal account on our website ( 4) During Church: Each week you have an opportunity to contribute during our weekend experiences. We still accept cash and checks in our offering envelopes. In 2014 our plan is to continue to improve the giving experience by making it simple, seamless and as easy as possible. We have designed new envelopes to better handle information and resources as we process your gifts of cash and checks. In addition our Communications Team is redesigning our online giving experience to maximize security and ease of use. I started off by telling you just a few of the stories and statistics from 2013 that are worth celebrating together. This is your generosity at work, and why giving is such a crucial part of what we do at Central. At the end of the day we are about changed lives. We take this responsibility seriously and we thank you for your generous support in this last year. We pray that God will bless you for your obedience and sacrifice as you give to the work God has called us to do at Central. If you have yet to begin regular giving, can I encourage you to become a part of the story that God is writing through our church in 2014?
Thank You For Your Generosity In Let's Finish This Year Strong. Our Giving As Of Nov 24, 2013 $332,000 Amount Needed By The End Of 2013 To Make 100% Budget 13 THE LOOP - A MAGAZINE OF CENTRAL COMMUNITY CHURCH
MISSION+CAUSES IT'S JUST BETTER TO GIVE As a church not only are we passionate about helping people spiritually, but practically as well. This is part of our mandate. This winter you can help us make a practical difference in our region with the simple act of donating your gently used winter outerwear. Jonathan Gallo - Mission Director Central Community Church jonathangallo@centralcc.ca Whether we first heard that phrase from someone we respected, or read it in the Bible (Acts 20:35), one thing is certain, the awareness of that socially transferable ideal is heightened at this time of year. Whether we give to friends, relatives, neighbours, or to people we have never met, Christmas is a time of giving. Food drives, clothing drives, toy drives, volunteer service, mission projects and helping orphans are just some of the ways to give. We often view our service to others at this time of year as something we do in response to what God has done for us. We feel compelled to give because God first gave Himself to us in Jesus. While this is true, I wonder if there is more to it. I wonder if giving is really a divine setup for spiritual fulfillment. If God, who is the definition of love, created us in His image it only makes sense that we find fulfillment as we love and serve others. I believe that God finds satisfaction through giving and he designed us to do the same. In John 4, Jesus was encouraged to by his disciples to eat to get his strength back. At first glance, His response to them is strange. He tells them my nourishment is to serve. In other words "when I serve I get energy for everything else in my life." This past fall we had over 70 volunteers serving 1000 kids at 9 sites across the Niagara Region in our Light the Night Campaign. In our Warm Niagara campaign we have had countless people who have been able to help families that do not have the means to purchase coats and boots. I have had the benefit of hearing so many great stories lately. Those who seem most blessed are not always the ones receiving, but the ones who are on the giving end. This Christmas we have a chance to experience a deeper level of spiritual fulfillment through our Merry Christmas World campaign. Locally we are sponsoring 150 under-resourced families with non perishable food, gift cards, and presents for the kids. You can put a package together with our LiveDifferent Team or sponsor a family for as little as $75. Internationally this year we are working with some missionary friends of ours in Honduras by sponsoring a water project to bring fresh water to over 1200 families. Our goal is to raise $15,000 for this project. We should not give out of a selfish motivation, but with hearts that are filled with generosity and thanksgiving. We should recognize that perhaps our ability to give is really God s gift back to us. This Christmas we want to encourage you to experience the joy of giving through our Merry Christmas World campaign.
2013 LOCAL INITIATIVE Sponsor a family today for $75. Build a basket, get gifts for the kids or donate the funds and let us do it for you. We have 150 families in the Niagara Region we are sponsoring INTERNATIONAL INITIATIVE Help us raise $20,000 to build a sustainable water source for 1200 families in the Schools of Hope Project in Honduras. This will help supply a feeding program to over 1500 kids twice a day, provide clean drinking water and transform a community for years to come. 19 THE HISTORICAL FIGURE BEHIND SANTA CLAUS 19 THE LOOP - A MAGAZINE OF CENTRAL COMMUNITY CHURCH An ancient merchant had three lovely daughters. But due to a tragic turn of events, he had lost all hope that his daughters would be able to marry and live a happy life. It was the third century, and this businessman had lost his fortune when pirates pillaged his ship. His beautiful daughters were of marrying age, and without money he could give them no dowry. In those days, young women without a dowry had few options for survival. Many were forced into slavery or prostitution. The father prayed around the clock that somehow God would grant a miracle for his family. A young Christian bishop discovered the plight of this man and his daughters. This bishop was a wealthy man, having received a large inheritance at the death of his parents. One evening, in the middle of the night, the bishop secretly slipped a sack of gold through a window into the merchant's house. This timely gift saved the virtue of the man's oldest daughter. Later, another sack saved the second daughter. Anticipating a third gift of gold, the father determined to discover who was helping his family. He stayed up all night and when the sack was dropped through the window, the father ran down the road and apprehended the mysterious benefactor. The merchant immediately recognized the young bishop and tried to give thanks to him. The humble minister deflected the praise. "No, all thanks go to God, not to me." The father answered, "I need to let everybody know you did this." The bishop responded, "No, you must promise me that not until I'm dead will you let anyone know how you received the gold." This compassionate bishop believed literally Christ s injunction that when we give, we should do so in secret, sacrificially in Christ s name and not our own. The merchant promised that he would tell no one of the way this minister helped save this family. And it wasn t until after his death that the world learned the numerous stories of the generosity of this bishop of the early Church, Saint Nicholas. Through his timely gifts, Saint Nicholas helped to restore the hope of this family, and hundreds more in his community. But the ministry of Bishop Nicholas extended beyond giving gifts. History tells us that he was persecuted by the Roman authorities and imprisoned for his faith. Later, when Emperor Constantine made Christianity the state religion, Nicholas boldly defended the doctrine of the Trinity at the Council of Nicea. Continued On Page 22
Continued From Page 21 Throughout his ministry, Bishop Nicholas selflessly poured out his life and his fortune as he served the people in and around his home. The Giving Bishop The story of our modern Santa Claus begins with this same Nicholas, who was born during the third century in Patara, a village in what is now Demre, Turkey. His wealthy parents raised him as a Christian. But they died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young, and he was left with their fortune. Obeying Jesus' words to "sell what you own and give the money to the poor," Nicholas used his inheritance to assist the suffering, the sick, and the poor. During the persecution of Christians by Roman Emperor Diocletian, Bishop Nicholas was exiled and imprisoned along with thousands of other Christians. Though he suffered for his faith in Jesus Christ, mercifully Nicholas survived this persecution and was eventually released. After returning to his post as bishop, Nicholas was called upon to defend Christianity against the heresy of Arianism. A contemporary of Nicholas and an early church theologian, Arius taught that God the Father and God the Son did not exist together eternally. Arius also taught that the pre-incarnate Jesus was a divine being created by (and possibly inferior to) the Father at some point, before which the Son did not exist. Tradition tells us that Nicholas vigorously fought Arianism, and was listed as a participant in the First Council of Nicaea. This important gathering, held in Nicaea in Bithynia (present-day Iznik in Turkey), was convened by the Roman Emperor Constantine I in 325 A.D. This was the first ecumenical council of the early Christian Church, and it produced the first uniform Christian doctrine -- the Nicene Creed. It is also believed that Nicholas participated in the destruction of several pagan temples, among them the temple of Artemis. Because the celebration of the goddess Diana's birth is on December 6th, some have speculated that this date was deliberately chosen for Nicholas's feast day to overshadow or replace the pagan celebrations. But December 6th is also listed as the date of Nicholas's death, which is more likely the reason the feast is celebrated on this day. St. Nicholas in Europe Through the centuries St. Nicholas has continued to be venerated by Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians -- and he is honored by Protestant Christians. By his example of generosity to those in need, St. Nicholas is a model of Christ's call to selfless giving. Widely celebrated in Europe, St. Nicholas' feast day on December 6th kept alive the stories of his generosity and kindness. In Germany and Poland, boys dressed as bishops begged alms for the poor. In the Netherlands and Belgium, St. Nicholas arrived on a steamship from Spain to ride a white horse on his gift-giving rounds. December 6th is still the main day for gift giving in much of Europe. In the Netherlands, candies are thrown in the door, along with chocolate initial letters, small gifts, and riddles. Dutch children leave carrots and hay in their shoes for St. Nick's horse, hoping it will be exchanged for gifts. Simple gift-giving on St. Nicholas Day helps to preserve a Christmas Day focus on the Christ Child. The story of St. Nicholas was almost forgotten during the 16th century as Protestants downplayed the veneration of the saints. Both reformers and counter-reformers tried to eliminate the customs of St. Nicholas' Day, but they had very little long-term success. Because the common people loved St. Nicholas, he survived on the European continent as people continued to place nuts, apples, and sweets in shoes left beside beds, on windowsills, or before the hearth. 22 Continued From Page 20 The first Europeans to arrive in the New World brought the story of St. Nicholas with them. The Vikings dedicated their cathedral to him in Greenland. On his first voyage, Columbus named a Haitian port for St. Nicholas on December 6, In Florida, Spaniards named an early settlement St. Nicholas Ferry, now known as Jacksonville. St. Nicholas Becomes Santa Claus According to the Saint Nicholas Center Web site, after the American Revolution, New Yorkers were looking to break with British tradition, and they remembered with pride the colony's nearly-forgotten Dutch roots. John Pintard, an influential patriot who founded the New York Historical Society in 1804, promoted St. Nicholas as the patron saint of both the society and the city. In January 1809, Washington Irving published the satirical Knickerbocker's History of New York, which made numerous references to a jolly St. Nicholas character. This was not a saintly European bishop, but rather a Dutch burgher with a clay pipe. The jolly elf image received a big boost in 1823 from a poem destined to become immensely popular, "A Visit from St. Nicholas," -- now better known as "The Night Before Christmas." Washington Irving's St. Nicholas strongly influenced the poem's portrayal of a round, pipe-smoking, elf-like St. Nicholas. The poem generally has been attributed to Clement Clark Moore, a professor of biblical languages at New York's Episcopal General Theological Seminary. In North America, the popular name Santa Claus was taken from the Dutch Sinterklaas, which originated with a contracted form of Sint Nicolaas (Saint Nicholas). The "Mall Santa" that we are all familiar with -- sporting a red suit with white cuffs and collar, and black leather belt, became the popular image in the United States in the late 19th century and early 20th century because of the "Merry Old Santa Claus" images created by political cartoonist Thomas Nast. Beginning in 1863, Nast began a series of annual drawings in Harper's Weekly that were inspired by the descriptions found in Washington Irving's work. These drawings established a rotund Santa with flowing beard, fur garments, and a clay pipe. Nast drew his Santa until 1886, and his work had a major influence in creating the modern American Santa Claus. In the mid-20th Century a series of Coca-Cola advertisements featuring a rotund and jovial Santa Claus was drawn by artist Haddon Sundblom and further popularized Nast's depiction. There are, of course, controversial aspects of the American Santa Claus fiction. Some Christians believe he takes the focus of Christmas away from Jesus Christ, placing it on a fictional character with little redemptive value. Others insist that it is unhealthy for parents to lie to their children to enforce their belief in Santa Claus. And others say that Santa Claus is a symbol of the commercialization and consumerism that has seized the Christmas holiday in the West. Still for others, Santa Claus and the modern celebration of Christmas is seen as an intrusion upon their own national traditions. But beneath all the symbolism and tradition that has been attached to the modern American Santa Claus, he, like so many other "Father Christmas" characters before him can hearken back to a simple Christian bishop who loved God and loved people. Bishop Nicholas displayed his love through the giving of gifts, just as our Heavenly Father gave the gift of His Son to us that first Christmas morning 2000 years ago. In this season, we celebrate how God gave His Son, Jesus, to bring hope to the world. May each of us prayerfully consider how we, like Nicholas, can give of ourselves to help restore hope to those that God brings into our lives.
