All of this will be done without ever using the "s" word (except in the title)! Come and see! Pastor Borghardt is the President of Higher Things and serves Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in McHenry, IL. revborghardt@higherthings.org Scripture or Clear Reason Rev. Dr. Jayson Galler Chapman Center - Room 126 When Martin Luther took his stand at the Diet of Worms in 1521, he said he would not recant unless he was convinced by Scripture or clear reason, but elsewhere he called reason the devil's whore. So, what is the relationship between faith and reason? This session will address that question by looking at the Bible and some good Lutheran theologians and by applying their principle to theological topics and other contemporary issues, like the beginning of the universe and the beginning and ending of life. Hopefully, we ll realize that reason isn t only the devil s tool but can also be a tool of baptized believers, as we take our stand wherever we are in Pastor Galler serves Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Kilgore, TX. pastor@pilgrimlc.org Leviticus: The Life is in the Blood Rev. Christopher Gillespie Northrup Hall - Room 40 Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! Leviticus was given to instruct Israel how to live in worship before God. God is holy, and Leviticus shows us how He gives His holiness to us. From the New Testament, we learn how the tabernacle worship foreshadows the redemption found in Jesus Christ. Pastor Gillespie is the Webmaster for Higher Things and serves Grace Lutheran Church in Dyer, IN. gillespie@higherthings.org Knock Knock. Who s There? Jehovah s Witnesses Mr. Paul Norris Chapman Center - Room 142 Who is that knocking on my door? Jehovah s Witnesses are very convincing and seem like they may be fellow Christians, but what is the real source of their theology and beliefs that separates them from true Christianity? You will be introduced to the History of the Jehovah s Witnesses (JWs), their eschatology, doctrine, theology, and the New World translation of the Bible. See how they are connected to ancient heresies of the Church. Learn how JW theology stacks up against Creedal Christianity, and know how to identify the basic theological errors of JW doctrine as it compares with the true Gospel message of Christ crucified on the cross. Know your enemy, and be prepared to defend yourself from Satan s ancient lie! Paul Norris is a member at Faith Lutheran Church in Plano, TX. Paul.Norris@faithplano.org Blood, Penalties, Offerings, Priests and a Tent: Does Leviticus Still Matter? Rev. Ryan Ogrodowicz Coates University Center - Room 111 Sacrifices. Holy things. Death penalties. Bloody sacrifices, skin disease, fancy garments and mandatory festivals what does this have to do with the confessional Lutheran? Leviticus has its challenges and might seem irrelevant. However, a closer look reveals Leviticus is still God s infallible, inspired Word, testifying to Christ and Him crucified. In this session, we ll look at some key areas in Leviticus and their correspondence to the New Testament. Also, we ll examine the overarching message of the book, and its critical relationship to the rest of Holy Scripture as it points to the atoning sacrifice of Jesus. Leviticus still has a lot to offer anyone who takes the time to read it and, by the grace of God, believe it. Pastor Ogrodowicz serves Victory in Christ Lutheran Church in Newark, TX. pastoro@viccla.org How to be a Lutheran Girlfriend, Boyfriend, or None of the Above? 2 It s pretty normal for teenagers to date. It s also pretty normal for them not to. Navigating the crazy roller-coaster of dating, relationships (and the lack thereof ) can be overwhelmingly confusing. Does the Bible give us any hints on how to conduct ourselves in these important relationships, whether we re in them now or not? Come with your dating questions and hear what gifts God has for us in these vocations. Sandra Ostapowich is the Conference and Deputy Executive for Higher Things and a member at Faith Lutheran Church in Plano, TX. sandra@higherthings.org Greatest Christian Action Service (Or, How Do I Please God and Care for My Neighbor) Rev. Gary Piepkorn Coates University Center - Room 237 Flowing out of justification is sanctification. Sanctification shows itself, most dramatically and as documentation of faith to those around a believer, in service. Above all, a believer is to serve God. But without God being physically present, service to God can be shown in serving others. One of the more prominent serving areas of life is in marriage. The husband serving the wife and the wife serving the husband spills over into all other areas of one s life, as well. Serving sets the stage for confessing the Gospel too. Thus, just as Jesus said that He did not come to be served, so, too, do Christians take on the task of serving, serving like Jesus insofar as we can, and serving those that God brings into our lives. Pastor Piepkorn serves Faith In Christ Lutheran Church in Portales, NM. piepkorg@earthlink.net Standing on the Promises Apostles' Creed Rev. Michael Scudder Dicke/Smith - Room 320 There is nothing like a promise to make you feel good. It's even better if that promise is kept. The world promises so many things and delivers on very few of them. God's Word delivers on every promise, especially those confessed with the Apostles' Creed. Let the world see where you stand and confess. Pastor Scudder serves Faith Lutheran Church in Mount Pleasant, IA. pastorscuddermr@gmail.com Worship 101: Why We Do What We Do Rev. Joel Shaltanis Laurie Auditorium - Room 320 Lutherans worship the way we do for very good reasons. The words we say, the songs we sing, the rituals and ceremonies are all done for a purpose. But if you haven t learned about the reasons behind our worship (or maybe you could just use a refresher), then come to this session to learn more about the Biblical basis and rationale of Lutheran worship. Bring questions and expect to grow in understanding of why we worship the way we do. Pastor Shaltanis serves Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Plano, TX. pastorshaltanis@yahoo.com

Harrison Goodman Coates University Center - Room 111 Or, what I wish I knew to tell Ashley. When someone close to you is hurting, you just want it to stop. When it leaves scars and welts, it s terrifying. The temptation to answer with platitudes like it will be OK gives way to outright lies that only try to bury the hurt instead of facing it. The truth is sin isn't just an idea that can be pushed aside by a smile and positive thinking. Sin is brokenness and hurt, but our God really did bleed for sin. Our God really did die for you. 5 Session C Lutherans Stand on History Mrs. Jocelyn Benson Dicke/Smith - Room 320 Some consider history boring, but Martin Luther was a staunch advocate of learning history. We ll examine the Fall of the Roman Empire, the French Revolution, and the Fall of the Berlin Wall. Particularly we ll recognize what led to these critical events and what came because of them. You ll see that these events are critically important to you and to our Lord s church in these gray and latter days. Aaron Fenker Chapman Center - Room 142 Buy it or read it free online, Christian bookstores have many to choose from, or you could even pick one up at Walmart. The Bible: 2 Testaments; 66 books. We call it "holy, "God's Word, "inspired," and all sorts of other things. But what would Jesus think of all this? We've got our opinions about the Bible, but are we thinking like Jesus or not? What if someone dies before they are baptized, will they be with the Lord? My friends tell me I'm not truly a Christian because I haven't had a "believers baptism" is that true? Isn't "dedicating" babies to the Lord a wonderful way to show how good of a Christian we are? These questions and more will be answered as we investigate what Jesus has promised you in His Holy Word. Larry Rockemann Dicke/Smith - Recital Hall What s it like to be a Lutheran missionary in the streets of Peru? Come join the Lutheran Heritage Foundation s Skype conversation with Caitlin Worden, an LCMS deaconess sharing the faith with Peruvian street children. With her trusty companion, Luther s Small Catechism at her fingertips, Caitlin lays the foundation of faith for young new believers who have lived hard and even dangerous lives on the streets of Lima. You ll also learn more about the work of LHF, an LCMS mission organization celebrating 25 years of translating and publishing Luther s Small Catechism for churches around the world. Rev. Rockemann is the Development and Church Relations Director for Lutheran Heritage Foundation in Macomb, MI. lrockemann@lhfmissions.org Youth Ministry 101 Mrs. Crysten Sanchez Dicke/Smith - Room 320 When thinking about putting a youth program into place at a church, it can seem like a daunting task, and if you were asked to build something immediately, it would be daunting! There are a lot of building blocks that go into understanding who you are working
12 with, how to build a program that is sustainable, and ultimately, the best practices that will encourage the youth you work with to continue on in the faith after leaving high school. Not only that, we also live in a culture that demands vigilance in watching out for the safety and protection of any minors we work with. Crysten Sanchez, former Youth Coordinator at a church in Iowa, and current Conference Coordinator for Higher Things, will walk you through many pieces of the puzzle in putting together a successful and safe youth program that will be sustainable for the now and for the future! Crysten Sanchez is the Conference Coordinator for Here I Stand - Texas and is a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon, IA. csanchez@higherthings.org How to make a Catholic Lutheran Rev. Brett Simek Chapman Center - Room 126 Ever wish you knew more about what your Roman Catholic friends believed? Is there still a difference between being Roman Catholic and being Lutheran, or was that just a Reformation thing? Ever wish you knew a way to talk to them to get them to consider being Lutheran? Come and learn how to answer these questions as we consider what makes us distinctly Lutheran and how we can talk with our Roman Catholic friends about being Lutheran. Pastor Simek is the Catechesis Coordinator for Higher Things, Catechist for Here I Stand - Texas, and serves Hope Lutheran Church in Jerseyville, IL. rev.simek@gmail.com Here I Stand: I Believe, Help My Unbelief Dr. Daniel van Voorhis Coates University Center - Room 111 The Gospel affords us comfort and freedom, but what about when we don't feel it and are burdened with sins we can't talk about? Dr. Daniel van Voorhis is a former professor, a recovering addict and now the host of a popular podcast (Virtue in the Wasteland) and author of Monsters: Addiction, Hope, Ex-Girlfriends and Other Dangerous Things. How did addiction to alcohol and substances fit with life as a baptized child of God? How can we break the cycle with the help of friends and the freedom of the Gospel? Come listen and discuss these topics with Dr. van Voorhis. Dr. van Voorhis is the Scholar-in-Residence and Director of Curriculum for 1517.The Legacy Project and is a member of Faith Lutheran, Capistrano Beach, CA. danv@1517legacy.com The Divine Service: Not to Entertain, But to Save Us Rev. James Woelmer Laurie Auditorium - Room 320 Our Lord speaks, and we listen. He gives, and we receive. The liturgy is the structure through which forgiveness is delivered. The hymnal is one of the most important books in teaching the faith. The Church's music and hymns are Christ-centered and not mancentered. God is present serving us with His Word and Sacrament. Come and hear about what takes place on Sunday morning and why. Pastor Woelmer is the Chaplain for Here I Stand - Texas and serves Faith Lutheran Church in Plano, TX. jwoelmer@verizon.net
