1 Session A The Dating and Homosexuality SeXtional Rev. George Borghardt WSU - Belk Auditorium Love. Marriage. Relationships. Gay Marriage. Naughty but nice snaps. Fun words like fornication. Was I born this way? How far is too far? How far isn t? Porn! When do I get married? All of this will be done without ever using the "s" word (except in the title)! Come and see! Pastor Borghardt is the President of Higher Things and serves Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in McHenry, IL. revborghardt@higherthings.org A Disappointing Holy Week Rev. Eric Brown MFA - Spainhour Hall Things looked so good on Palm Sunday there were crowds and celebrations. Yet by the end of the week, Jesus is crucified. Why? Because in Holy Week, Jesus disappointed every single group in Jerusalem by refusing to fulfill their false expectations. Instead of doing what people wanted, Jesus was determined to be the Messiah who wins salvation for His people. In this breakout, we will see how, in the course of one short week, Jesus frustrates everyone. And yet, in doing so, how He was determined to win forgiveness for the sins of the world. Pastor Brown serves Trinity Lutheran Church in Herscher, IL. pastorbrown.trinity@comcast.net Should Christianity be Legal? Rev. James Douthwaite Day Hall 304 Religious freedom has come under attack in our society. Speaking Scriptural truth is now, in some places, considered a hate crime. In some countries, converting to Christianity is illegal. What would happen to the Church if Christianity became illegal? Should it be? This breakout will discuss these kinds of questions and then take a look at a time when Christianity was illegal and many Christians suffered under great persecution. What happened to the Church then? How about when Christianity did become legal did that benefit the Church? How did Catechesis change once the Church was accepted? What can we learn from all this for our situation today, and gain confidence in our Lord s promise that though persecution will come, the gates of hell will not prevail against His Church? Come and find out! Pastor Douthwaite serves Saint Athanasius Lutheran Church in Vienna, VA. revjdoc@gmail.com Our Bible: What Would Jesus Think? Rev. We will discuss questions regarding exorcisms, possessed homes, and other claimed spiritual manifestations. How do we tell the difference between what is real and what is superstition? But what happened to the Reformation and the Lutheran Church after Luther went to heaven? On a one minute for every ten years scale, this session will give you a quick historical outline of the perils, pitfalls, and progress as Lutheranism moved from Luther s rediscovery of the biblical Gospel in Germany to how we confess the same Gospel today in America. Thomas Olson Nash Education Hall 212 Jesus came to a people whose lives were liturgically ordered or had been. He would fulfill the liturgy set forth in God's Word of the Old Testament. We will examine Ezekiel's calling as priest in Babylonia, how the liturgy had failed to be fulfilled in his day and how God directed him to lead the remnant of Judah back into a liturgical relationship with Yahweh. We will consider the errors of Israel's kings over the centuries and the coming and blessing of the King of Heaven on the cross and in our midst today. Pastor Olson is the Liturgist for Here I Stand - North Carolina and serves Trinity Lutheran Church in Tryon, NC. pto351@gmail.com Youth Ministry 101 Mrs. Crysten Sanchez Day Hall 304 When thinking about putting a youth program into place at a church, it can seem like a daunting task, and if you were asked to build something immediately, it would be daunting! There are a lot of building blocks that go into understanding who you are working with, how to build a program that is sustainable, and ultimately, the best practices that will encourage the youth you work with to continue on in the faith after leaving high school. Not only that, we also live in a culture that demands vigilance in watching out for the safety and protection of any minors we work with. Crysten Sanchez, former Youth Coordinator at a church in Iowa, and current

10 Conference Coordinator for Higher Things, will walk you through many pieces of the puzzle in putting together a successful and safe youth program that will be sustainable for the now and for the future! Come listen and discuss these topics with Dr. van Voorhis. Shocking statements like these have led some historians to conclude that the seeds of anti-semitism in Germany, which led to the Holocaust, were planted by Martin Luther himself. Is this true? How do we as Lutherans react to these shocking statements? How do we respond to those who would lay blame for the Holocaust at the feet of Martin Luther? More importantly, how should we treat our Jewish friends and neighbors today?
