1 PROSPECTUS Programme for Personal Enrichment and Ministerial Professional Development LEADERSHIP BIBLICAL THEOLOGY PEOPLE LEARNING Building Committed, Confident Leaders
2 his September the New Testament Church of God will celebrate 65 years of ministry in the UK, however; the worldwide Church of God is now 132 years old. The UK division of the church was founded by some of the Windrush generation. The success of the Church is due largely to the sacrifices made by its leaders, members and supporters. For the Church to last another 65 years and beyond, the training of the next generation of leaders will be paramount. Any organisation that does not have suitably trained and qualified leadership will struggle to deliver its mission. The leadership of the New Testament Church of God is committed to leadership development and have demonstrated our commitment with financial investment in our education programme. In the last eleven years, Rev Phyllis Thompson has worked extremely hard to develop the training programme for leaders at the Leadership Training Centre. Phyllis will retire from her role as Education Director at the end of December I am quite certain that she will continue to make her contribution in other ways to the life of our Church. However, as she goes into this semiretirement phase of her life we wish her every blessing for the future. The Education programme will continue under the directorship of Rev Delroy Henry who has been appointed to succeed Phyllis from 1st December My wish is to see more of our current and emerging leaders take advantage of the training courses at the Leadership Training Centre. The long-term success of the New Testament Church of God will depend largely on whether or not we have trained leaders in place to deliver the ministry and mission of our church. The message in 2 Tim. 2:1 is still pertinent for us today: Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Tim. 2:15) (KJV) Donald Bolt - Administrative Bishop Theological education and ministerial training are critical components of life-long learning for Christian discipleship and leadership. Over the last eleven years we have sought to build on our UK legacy and international heritage to facilitate learning processes and content to enrich and enhance our denominational contribution to the Christian witness in our local, national and global contexts. It has been a most humbling and privileged opportunity to serve the Lord and the Church in this way and I wish to thank the leadership of our Church, the Education Board, the facilitators, administrators and volunteers for their gracious support during this time. We have indeed come this far by faith. and to God be the glory. Imagine if every local pastor made the effort to enrol on one course during this academic year to enrich their leadership and pastoral ministry? What if an emerging leader in every local church was supported to enrol on a course in areas of studies such as counselling, preaching, evangelism, church planting and worship to enhance their Christian service inside/outside the church. What if all local Church leaders could grasp the vision to mentor and guide the 18-35yrs old into theological education and/or ministerial training? The Leadership Training Centre and the Heritage Centre have been established to help answer these questions through shared learning. I implore each leader and member of our church to grasp this invitation and make a year of new beginnings in your life and Christian witness. Rev Phyllis Thompson B.Ed. LTh, MA Education Director The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the broken hearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD. Luke 4:18-19 (NKJV) 02
3 The Learning programmes The courses, seminars, lectures and conferences are designed and facilitated to support the formation and development of Christian leaders in their various practice of ministry. The Certificate in Ministerial Studies(CIMS) courses are open to Pastors and Church leaders from all Christian denominations. CIMS courses provide learning and development opportunities for effective Christian service within and beyond the local church. The Community Service Chaplaincy Programme (CSCP) offers training experience for effective chaplaincy ministries in hospitals, prisons, college/ universities, and other communities/ institutions. Approach to learning The courses facilitated at the Leadership Training Centre are delivered via distance learning and offer participants the opportunity to: Study at the time and place that best suit their schedule; Study individually or with others at home; Develop the skills to reflect critically upon their experience and learn from it; Participate in small online group e-discussions Three programmes are specific to the New Testament Church of God ministerial licensure process to the ranks of credential ministry: The Calling and Ministries Studies [CAMS] affirm and prepare Exhorter licensure candidates for the first rank of credentialed ministry. The Ministerial Internship Programme [MIP] connects the candidate for the rank of ordained ministry with experienced pastors for mentoring and ministry training. The Continuing Ministerial Development Programme [CMDP] supports the candidates in their preparation for the ministry of the ordained Bishop. Participate in at least two facilitator-led sessions for each course at the Leadership Training Centre; Explore biblical and theological premise for enrichment and the enhancement of Christian service in contemporary society; Learn from participating in face-to-face interaction; Gain insight from fellowship and conversation with others Apply learning to life and ministry. Janet Anderson NTCG Stoke on Trent A Journey through the Old Testament I thank God for the opportunity to access the courses at the LTC. From the very first session I knew I had made the right decision to undertake theological studies. I felt energised, inspired and motivated in my quest to be a better servant for God. In a very short time I have increased my knowledge and have experienced its impact on my prayer life, faith and witness for Jesus Christ. After attending the course, I strongly felt in my spirit that it was time to go ahead and start a mission in Swindon. We started on the 22/04/2018 with 13 people. Thank you very much for putting this course together. Howard Harvey - NTCG Gloucester Helping people in Crisis I attended the Helping people in Crisis course with the intention of obtaining some knowledge about helping people in crisis. The course was that and much much more. I gained more knowledge and confidence in carrying out my duties in the church and in fact the knowledge and skills gained are helping me in my day to day life also. If you are looking for a way to gain knowledge and build confidence in caring for people with challenges, this is the course for you. It comes highly recommend and I guarantee that you will not be disappointed. The course facilitators are super-efficient and dynamic and there was never a dull moment throughout the taught sessions. Maxine Mullings NTCG Manchester Leading with Integrity This course provided me with a better understanding of Christian leadership and it served to strengthen some of the core values I already held. It re-enforced for me the value of authentic leadership, highlighted some of the challenges of leadership and ways of managing them. I have been encouraged to make integrity a way of life and building a culture of trust amongst those I lead. The course highlighted the fact that leaders are in a position of influence, and such influence can be either negative or positive. It reinforced my commitment to ensure that I seek to build strong character qualities which includes integrity in my personal life and in the life of those I lead. The taught sessions were both informative and interactive and the fellowship with other students helped to foster a healthy learning environment. 6 The Annual Oliver Lyseight Lecture Series Mutuality in God s own image 16th February 2019 NTCG Northampton The lecture will be delivered by Rev Dr Caroline Wickens. Caroline is the Superintendent Minister for the Manchester Circuit of the Methodist Church. The Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone. I will make him a helper as his partner (Gen.2:18). This verse is often taken to refer to marriage, but what if it offers a broader way of understanding God s intention for relationships between men and women? The 2019 Oliver Lyseight lecture will explore Biblical models of collaboration and partnership in doing God s work, with a particular focus on co-operation in God s mission. We shall consider how and why these approaches contributed to the growth of the early Church, and we shall explore the impact of external pressures on the development of the Church s thinking about mission and ministry. Finally, we shall consider ways in which the Biblical images might impact on our current thinking and practice in our own churches. Oliver Lyseight is an amazing pioneer who overcame his struggles to help plant churches across the UK. He did this while in an age of inequality. Some of his achievements are organising the first New Testament Church of God, he came joint second on a list of 100 great black Britons. Giovanni 13 yrs old - NTCG Clapton Previous Lectures Access the full series of the annual Dr. Oliver Lyseight Lectures by purchasing the collection: Challenges of Black Pentecostal Leadership in the 21st Century and the collection: Pentecostal Perspective Revisited. I am studying for my MDiv with the Pentecostal Theological Seminary [PTS]in the US via the LTC. The programme of study I am following has helped me to reaffirm my ministerial vocation and calling. There is scope to take optional modules of study so that I can tailor the course to my ministry needs and direction. I have found that the theological studies undertaken have given me a greater understanding of the socio-cultural context in which I am ministering. I have also been able to deepen my understanding of scripture and used this deeper understanding to educate and empower believers in my local church. My sermon preparation and delivery have also improved. I would recommend this programme of study with PTS to all ministers and laity interested to pursue advanced study in theology and ministerial development. Bishop Darryl Gidharry - NTCG Aylesbury A Taste of Heaven Leavon Bowman s creative skills and willingness to translate ideas into painting are to be celebrated. The painting invites us to consider the unique experience we bring to the table of invitation and what we take away to share with those we encounter through the course of our lives. God has prepared everything and invites us to come to the table where there is a place for everyone A place of divine encounters; A place of new beginnings; A place of enrichment and empowerment; A place of acceptance; A place of sustenance for Kingdom life, Feast and live. 7 Academic Partners All Nations Christian College Programme Administration and Facilitators Administrative Bishop Bishop Donald Bolt NTCG has a partnership with All Nations Christian College. Students studying with NTCG and who have an equivalent of a Bachelor s degree (in any field), and at least 2 years working and ministering cross-culturally, can progress to do postgraduate studies with All Nations, including an MA in Multicultural Church in Practice or an MA in Global Ecclesiology. The former is on helping (potential) ministers to understand and be equipped for ministry in a multicultural church context and think through how to effectively minister and lead a congregation made up of people from a diverse range of cultures. The second is for those involved in church based ministry (evangelism, church planting, pastoral ministry), and who are committed to deepening their understanding of how church is impacted by the local and global contexts and what constitutes a missional church. For further information, please contact the Leadership Training Centre. Certificate Programme for Church leaders The Leadership Training Centre in partnership with the Pentecostal Theological Seminary (PTS) have created a 5 year programme of study for Church leaders - 3 years via LTC and 2 years via PTS. The programme includes (a) theological, ministerial, and leadership training that embodies the Holiness-Pentecostal faith values of Christian tradition and (b) progression routes to advanced and accredited ministerial learning opportunities at PTS. For further information contact the Leadership Training Centre. The Queen s Foundation for Ecumenical Theological Education Queen s is committed to empowering existing and emerging leaders of Black Majority and Pentecostal Churches through theological education and training. A taster course in Theology is offered each year and is a great place to start. It introduces you to the skills needed for studying theology at Higher Education level. Those who complete the taster course, or who have other prior learning at the Leadership Training Centre, for example, can apply to do a Certificate in Higher Education, which is validated by Durham University. This is normally done part time (evenings and scheduled weekends) but may be done full time. If you complete this successfully you can continue to a Diploma or BA in Theology, Ministry and Mission. For existing and emerging leaders a new and exciting post graduate programme will be on offer in 2018 with a pathway tailored for leaders in Black Majority and Pentecostal Churches. Here are two testimonials from current students: I am studying a BA in Theology, Ministry and Mission part time, and it is equipping me for ministry from a personal, practical, theoretical and professional perspective (Conrad Miller, NTCG Dudley). Studying at Queens has given me a much needed theological foundation for effective ministry in my local church. It has also opened the door to the field of black theology and I intend to mine its treasures (Nathan Turner, NTCG The Rock). Her resource brings significant scope to the material in the Heritage Centre and broadens the opportunities for research and learning about the development of African Caribbean Pentecostalism, the emergence of Black Majority Churches (outside the historic mainstream denominations) and their contribution to Christianity in the United Kingdom. The project aims to provide resources and the interpretative media to make the heritage material accessible and engaging to a wide range of audiences.
