4 THE COMMUNITY OF ST ANSELM About The Archbishop of Canterbury is inviting young Christians to spend "a year in God's time" living and praying together at Lambeth Palace in London. Apply from Feb and meanwhile subscribe below to keep in touch. This week s cover story in the Tablet takes a deeper look at the Community of St Anselm, the radical new monastic programme for young Christians at Lambeth Palace being launched by the Archbishop of Canterbury next year. The article describes the bold risk of searching for 16 young people prepared to dedicate the vast majority of a year to prayer. When applications open early next year, the Community will be recruiting young Christians with a longing to go deep and the willingness to make sacrifice and undertake the discipline that monastic life will demand, the Archbishop of Canterbury s chaplain, the Revd Dr Jo Wells, explains. The hope, she adds, is that the experience will allow participants to travel for the rest of their lives in deep communion with God whether they work in business, education, the church, or elsewhere. The Tablet also spoke with a member of the existing Chemin Neuf community at Lambeth Palace, Alan Morley-Fletcher, who is confident that young people will be up for the challenge. My experience is that they are really happy to be engaged in something that takes them beyond themselves, in terms of their relationship with God, he says. They are very prepared to take this sort of programme really seriously. Read the full article on the Tablet website Find out more about the Community of St Anselm

5 The Anglican Church of Uruguay - Project 24 hours Millan has moved to Salterain Street 1083, Montevideo. At the moment we have 32 people using the facilities, 7 mothers, 25 children of between 2 weeks and 16 years of age. Our total capacity is of 40 and therefore we are preparing and reconditioning as best as we can, in order to make good use of all the available space. This house is a blessing for our Project and we are very happy with it. We are in the process of changing our name. The children, mothers and employees have worked on various proposals and in a few days we will get back to you, with the new name (we await news, as we publish this) There is a need for children s cots and perhaps a play-pen to help these families. The prams/strollers are already too small and the small children can fall off the bunks. We are also needing chairs and/or stools, medium size garbage cannisters, & baskets to place the dirty clothes in. We have a very large roof (for hanging the washing out on) but our washing machine needs to be repaired, for when it rains; we use a clothes dryer but this needs to be repaired also. A half 200 gallon drum, with a grill would be a useful item, in order that when the mothers collect their wages, they can celebrate their achievements (by cooking something special). Most of the women work within programmes which will eventually lead to employment. There is an atmosphere of renewal and at the same time a fear in the light of changes. Many times these changes are the result of some crisis and this is a chosen change which has been planned and where the person receives support. At the end of the day: a change indeed. We thank God for the opportunities that this house now offers. We expect to begin discovering our surroundings from every angle: educational, artistic, cultural, religious, sports facilities and the open spaces of the park, the beach and service areas. If you wish to contact the CENTRE please phone where our Educators or Technicians will respond to your concerns or questions. Many thanks indeed!! May God repay all your kindness..

6 A new name, re-newed hope We d like to share with all of you, that the 24-hour Center for mothers with children which was known as RIO BRANCO, in reference to the Street the house was situated on, has moved and what s more important, has changed its name. Following a difficult process, we have moved to a beautiful house situated in the neighbourhood of Curva de Maroñas. As we took into account, the need to adopt a personal identity (which did not change with the move and therefore, with the name of the street which the home was formerly on) about one month ago, we began searching for a name which would identify us. This was discussed with the mothers, children and work team and we finally agreed on SANTA MARIA. This has to do with various areas: faith, certain characteristics of the population (mothers with children) and finally the fact that the move actually took place on the day of St Mary Magdalene. For all of us this has been extremely important and we are pleased to share our happiness with each one of you. We hope that shortly we may be able to officially inaugurate this new home, sharing our joy! Best wishes to all! Laura Castro phones: /

7 Anglican Church and Interreligious Dialogue in 2014 PARLASUR On September 9 th, at the Mercosur Building the Interreligious Dialogue Forum 2014 took place 2014, organized by the Presidency of the PARLASUR (Mercosur Parliament) and by the Uruguayan Interfaith Forum. The theme was: "Spirituality as a Human Right: a call for Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation" and the event was declared of interest by the Ministries of Education and Culture, Social Development and the Municipality of Montevideo (Area of Cultural Diversity). The day began at hs and ended at 17:00 hs, consisting of two modules, separated by a light lunch served by the host. The first module was protocol: with a welcome by the PARLASUR President, Senator Ruben Martinez Huelmo and words of the Minister of Education and Culture, Dr. Ricardo Ehrlich. Following this, the coordinator Susana Andrade (representative of the Federated Afroumbandista Institutions of Uruguay- IFA) introduced the event and gave the floor to representatives of different faiths and religious traditions present, who were given three minutes each to present their beliefs. Our official representatives were Mrs. Ellen Jacoby and Fr Marcelo Chiesa. There were nature-beliefs (indigenous charrúas and syncretic-nature, as well as afro-umbandism) Abrahamic faiths (Judaism, Christianity in several of their denominations, current and historical, and Islam), Buddhism (Soka Gokkai), Hinduism (Bhakti Yoga / Hare Krishna ), the Mormon Church and New Religious Movements (Brahma Kumaris, Theurgy), Bahai faith and the Unification Church (Moon).

8 In the afternoon, from 13:30 thru to 16:30 hs four main themes were developed: a) Discrimination and Religion b) Violence and Coexistence c) Education and Secularism d) Environment and Religions. Our Church participated in the group Education and Secularism represented by Fr Illarze, OblSB, professor of Interreligious Dialogue in ITAU * (present in his capacity as such), who shared his experiences of 16 years in Brazil on that topic. The presentations of the groups took place in plenary. As a result of the meeting two documents were forthcoming: a Declaration on Interreligious Dialogue to PARLASUR 2014 and a proposal to the State and Uruguayan Government - Press and Public Opinion, both underwritten by the participating entities and may be obtained through dialogointerreligiosouruguay@gmail.com The day closed with words of the representative from Ministry of Social Development and a presentation of classical music performed by a youth chamber orchestra who executed pieces of Mozart, Handel, Bach and Vivaldi. 9 9 TRANSLATION The judicial work "The principles of Canon Law common to the Churches of the Anglican Communion", compiled by Drs. Norman Doe and John Rees under the auspices of the Anglican Consultative Council (ACC) and published by the Anglican Communion Office in 2008 as a help for the Lambeth Conference was translated and adapted to the more latin forensic language of this part of the world. The task which was undertaken by Fr Illarze OblSB, professor of the subject within the ITAU (Anglican Theological Institute of Uruguay), had the support of the diocesan bishop, advice was sent to the coordinators of the work and to the Department of Translations of the ACA. This was done with the intention of providing a more adequate foundation for this subject in the Spanish language within the ITAU, as there was no existing translation. Although the material is for internal use of the Institute, there already has been a request for a copy from Costa Rica, in order that they may be able to teach the subject in that country. Preparation for World Day of Prayer 2015 The National Ecumenical meeting, in preparation for the World Day of Prayer 2015, took place at the Waldensian Church of Uruguay in Montevideo on September 26th & 27th. The meeting, open to all Christians (not only to women) had a meaningful moment on the Saturday morning with a Bible study on John 13: 1-17 (the foot washing by Jesus in the context of the Last Supper), which was coordinated by the group from the Conventual parish. Christians of different denominations, prayed and reflected together, praised the Lord and took back to to their communities what was shared and learned at the meeting, with a commitment to celebrate together in March 2015.

10 THE "JEITO" * (CHARACTERISTICS) of the ANGLICAN DIOCESE OF SOUTHERN BRAZIL During the last week of August, I visited Setek* visit for an intensive course known as "Immersion to Anglicanism a prerequisite in my case, to obtain the Diploma in Theology from ITAU*. The hospitality I received was very gratifying - in the first place on behalf of the bishops*, as well as diocesan officers, librarians, the department of theological education, professors, seminarians and the communities that I visited which made me feel most welcome. The communities are known for their hospitality; the tasks are organized and divided, in order that the Sunday services are noteworthy not only for the organization, as well as for the pre-planning, admonitions, prayers, homilies which have been previously written. This means that the rhythm of the celebrations and the use of space, follow an order, which make the visible symbols recognizable, even for a novice/neofite. One observes three coordinated aspects, mission, liturgy and theology --integrated and inseparable. The different communities express what they believe and what they uphold, therefore their liturgies express specific theological reflections. A married-couple both priests & psychoanalysts struggle for a healthier life style, denouncing the contamination of certain foods and work towards a more ecological industry. Their community, is a therapeutic community, where there are workshops on one s inner-self, for parents who have lost a child, people with physical illnesses all of whom form an assembly which is a great "therapeutic community". The homilies and liturgy, endeavour to express an encounter with Jesus, the healer, a vision of Jesus the therapist and healer, with Jesus who understands our inner selves. This community, like others, I will visit again in November when I return to prepare the project for my thesis. I was also told about other more Evangelical-type communities and others with a more Pentecostal influence, but what always stands out is that they live according to their beliefs and their liturgies are always a reflection of an underlying theology. Externally, one can question whether they are different models of the church, but we know that what identified the birth of the early church was the plurality and the charisms forthcoming from the Holy Spirit from the beginning of time, God has encouraged that plurality and diversity of ministries and charisms which, far from being uniform, show the need for a more inclusive, rather than exclusive, reception. Doctrinal unity is unknown to the New Testament, but rather what exists is a plurality of "theologies" that came into conflict up until the consolidation of the Canon. No doubt on another visit, I will have a clearer vision of the diversity of the ministries and charisms which would welcome man in his current requirements, within a postmodern world, where models of other cultures and times have become insufficient. 1. A portuguese word which means: manner, style, mode 2. Theological Seminary Dom Egmont Machado Krischke, of Igreja Anglicana do Brasil, Porto Alegre. 3. Anglican Institute of Theology of Uruguay 4. Diocesan Bishop, Humberto Maiztegui & Bishop Emeritus, Orlando Santos

11 It would seem that what these differences do is increase the need for theological education, both academically and practically, of the clergy and the laity, in order to give consistency to the mission. What is most noteworthy, is that they are always on mission, whether in their work-place, as within their families. One of the clergy with whom I spoke, Rev. Pilato, mentioned to me that there are days when he receives phone calls from parishioners at his work-place, requesting pastoral care and he must make the time to visit their homes, attend meetings, open the parish twice a week, also clean, although from what I could see, the women see to these tasks, they cook very well, they have sales of used clothes which are well-known throughout Porto Alegre, fix clothes which are then ironed and therefore, are very well presented. Everything is aimed towards mission, making the Church known and inviting people to participate in the life/activities thereof. Bishop Humberto during his free time from the college where he teaches, talks to other teachers and especially to students and never misses an opportunity to talk about the Church, inviting people to the events taking place within the different communities. More than once, during the week I was at Setek, I saw him with youngsters on campus, showing them the buildings and providing them with opportunities where they could express their gifts. Whilst visiting some classic-religious bookstores, I was struck by the appreciation that they have for Bishop Humberto, for his ecumenical work and especially his contribution towards liberation theology, which many adhere to. I also noted the appreciation people have for Fr Enrique as he is known there due to his knowledge of Liturgy and Sacred Art, be it Catholics, Lutherans and Anglicans. Finally, what I wish to convey to you, is that the distinctive mark of the Church in Porto Alegre, is that of being a missionary Church, where there are various theologies that reflect their different struggles within society and seek to express those, within the liturgy. What is preached is lived out and that which is lived out, is transformed into worship, in the same manner as words, deeds, gestures and the life of Jesus, in the institution of the Last Supper, were transformed into worship, as the expression of the supreme sacrifice of the Son of God for all men. 12 12 Ecumenical Gathering On Sunday, September Iglesia Metodista de BETEL There was a bible exhibition which spanned 4 continents (America, Europe, Asia & Africa)... We were also able to see a BRAILLE bible This exhibition also included a workshop and exchange led by Fr Leonardo Goyret from the Anglican Church The event 14:00 hs and closed with an Ecumenical service Organizers & hosts : Betel Methodist Church, RC Santa Mónica (Palotine Frs), Anglican Santiago Apóstol Parish and Ruben Coutiño from CICU.
