[5] THE CHRISTIAN TEMPLE - III SURVEYING THE MINISTERIAL TEMPLE.- By studying the complete worship space in the Christian church (its "topography"), and continuing with what was presented in previous editions, we can distinguish three major places or areas where the community worships. They are: the place of the faithful (nave), the place for musicians and singers, and the clergy. Taken together, these give us a clear vision that when the people of God gather to celebrate they do so hierarchically (specific places for laity, clergy and ministers) and functionally (as the functions to be performed during worship ). I. THE PLACE OF LAITY (or the FAITHFUL).- The term "secular" is derived from the Greek word "laos" = people. Laity are therefore members of the People of God. We also use other terms synonymously: the faithful or the believers. Technically that place is called the NAVE and takes in the largest part of the building, and is the richest in diversity and especially as a symbol of the unity of the community. In the NAVE children, the elderly, men and women, healthy and sick, rich and poor, different cultural and ethnic groups, as we as both sinners and the righteous congregate. It is a cross section of society that responds to the call of the Lord and come to meet him, realizing the priesthood of all believers, interceding for society with the Father, through Christ, the only and eternal mediator, and in the power Holy Spirit. A good NAVE should take into account certain anthropological values to fully implement its mission and facilitate the development of good liturgy. These values are: comfort, visibility, audibility, action, and internalization. They help create a physical space where the whole human being, both through bodily, as well as spiritual senses, can participate in the Sacrament. This holistic participation is one of the characteristics of Christian worship. a) COMFORT. In order to pray well the body should feel comfortable and be in a correct position, because it allows for better concentration in the liturgical action. Therefore, the

[6] seats (benches or chairs) should be adequately designed and sized. The ambient temperature should be controlled, with light and proper ventilation. External noise should be avoided, and areas of movement and accessibility should be taken into account. b) VISIBILITY.- There are two places that ought to be viewed from anywhere in the temple, because they are the center of attention: the altar (where the Eucharistic action is performed) and the ambo (from where the Word of God is proclaimed, the sermon presented, and the prayer of the faithful are said). The seats should be arranged so that all present can see the liturgical action and it would also be desirable they can see one another. The seating of the faithful as theater audience is not the most suitable for a celebration of the Christian community. Natural and artificial lighting are of paramount importance. c) AUDIBILITY.- All participants must be able to hear clearly what the different ministers (celebrant, readers, guides, singers) say so that they can, in turn, respond in due form and so participate fully in the rite. Current technology is of great help. And yet, devices must be properly calibrated. The staff (celebrants and readers) must trained to properly use of them, guarding against architectural site conditions which may have created "deaf spots" and thinking about the growing number of people using hearing aids. d) ACTION.- The gathered People of God is not an immobile and passive assembly. It expresses itself corporately with various body positions and corporate movements. The nave should allow for comfortable and organized movement, such as for example, in processions, in Gospel proclamations, intercessions, greetings of peace, receiving communion, baptismal liturgies, or weddings. For this reason care needs to be taken in allowing enough aisle space for movement. As well, the space between the benches or chairs, the dimensions of the presbytery and placement of the ambo and the altar, all need to allow for a fluid movement of people. Care needs to be taken that objects and furniture in the nave not inhibit mobility (and prevent crowding).

[7] e) INTERNALIZATION.- All furniture and decor must tend to create an environment and a spirit of reverence and devotion in the faithful, so that people can feel the presence of the Lord among them, grow in faith and strengthen the sense of belonging to the Body of Christ (the Church) through ritual and ceremonial celebration. Practical care must be taken to prevent decorative elements, the colour of the walls, paintings, sculptures, memorials, etc., do not become elements which distract the believer from the essential, which is the ACTIVE, FULL AND CONSCIOUS participation in the liturgical action that is taking place in the temple. 8 [8] The Annual Synod The time of our annual Synod is once again approaching. This year, it will take place in diocesan facilities located at Reconquista 522 (the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and the Lafone Hall), on the 19th and 20th November. Please hold this gathering in your prayers over the next months.

[9] So that all may be informed about what the Synod is and how it functions, please read the following excerpt from our Diocesan Canons. CANON VII.- the Synod of IAU The synod is the general assembly of the IAU, the supreme legislative body and official representative body giving general direction of the Church, preserving the rights and obligations of the episcopate and those established by the Provincial Canons Convocation, frequency and types of Synods It is the duty of the Diocesan Bishop, or whomever replaces him canonically, to summon, in writing, the regular annual meeting of the Synod, with no less than thirty days in advance. For an extraordinary synod, the same shall be in writing, with the issue or issues to be addressed in detail, and with an anticipation of at least fifteen calendar days. The convocation can be executed: a) by choice of the Diocesan Bishop b) upon request: CED, or the Fiscal Commission, or one third of the members of the House of Laity and Clergy The Synod of the IAU will meet ordinarily once a year, the place and date determined in their previous meeting, and extraordinarily when circumstances warrant, respecting the canonical provisions on the subject There are 3 types of Synod: a) Regular: held annually to discuss the progress of the spiritual and material matters that make the normal life of the IAU, respecting the Constitution and Canons of the IAU and the Province of which is part; b) extraordinary: to treat serious and / or urgent matters seriously affecting the institutional life of the IAU. Here you can only discuss the subject of the call; c) elective: convened to elect a bishop, in accordance with the Canons of the IAU and the Province Functions of the Synod The are type types of functions of the Synod: general and specific General functions: without prejudice to others that may arise:

[10] a) to assist, within its responsibilities, the diocesan bishop in the government of the Church. b) to consider and approve resolutions for better governance of the Church. c) to issue its own rules d) to create, replace, reform, in whole or in part, the Constitution and Canons of the IAU, in accordance with the Constitution and Canons of the IAU and the Province. e) to establish standards and general Resolutions for the IAU. f) to create commissions and / or working groups, or to recommend their creation to the CED for specific tasks that may arise Specific functions: without prejudice to others that may arise: a) receive and consider management reports from the Bishop, the CED, the Diocesan Treasurer (including Balance, Budget and amount of parish and diocesan assessments for the following year), the Fiscal Commission, and the various committees and / or working groups of the IAU. b) to elect, by secret ballot, members who occupy elected office, as established in these canons. c) to appoint the lay and clerical representatives of the IAU and alternates for the Provincial Synod meeting in accordance with the Provincial Canons. d) to elect scrutineers to oversee the voting process. Almighty and everliving God, source of all wisdom and understanding, be present with those who take counsel at Diocesan Synod for the renewal and mission of your Church. Teach us in all things to seek first your honor and glory. Guide us to perceive what is right, and grant us both the courage to pursue it and the grace to accomplish it; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP p 818)

[11] Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers; but their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night. They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper.
