4 4 FIDES COMPANIS One of many blessings in our Anglican Communion is that we can experience the sense of family from one province to another respecting episcopal jurisdictions in order to be closer in spirit and solidarity. I want to share a story about that. First, the initiative started with a relationship between a parish in Monterrey, Mexico and one in Toronto, Canada and for years we have been in communion exchanging our prayer lists. A second step was to create a blog to provide and share information about our ministries, posting updates every week. These initiatives are with the blessing of the bishops of the Diocese of Northern Mexico and the Diocese of Toronto. This humble step is leaving a precedent that with goodwill we can be creative and bring together communities which have common missions. In January 2015, we started to explore a similar experience with the Diocese of Uruguay and we are confident that between Mexico, Uruguay and Canada we can send a message to other congregations and dioceses to imitate this step, a partnership in faith. This is the reason for the name of our renewed blog "Fides Companis", meaning faithful companions in the mission of the Church. We invite you to believe that small steps, taken with faith and commitment can contribute and encourage to reduce geographical distances, to embrace diversity, to proclaim in the common language of faith and love, that we care about each other. 5 5 On Friday September 11 we were present at the meeting which took place at the IMPO = (National Office of Official Publications and Printing, entitled: "More Dialogue, more Rights more Development A special venue on the date which recalls times of tensions and clashes which prompt us to seek alternatives, along the path of integration and fundamental rights. Time has gone by since the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were set and which after 15 years, give way to new Sustainable Development Goals (ODS) which are to be presented for their approval at the 70th General Assembly of the United Nations, to be held between 25 & 27 September, inst. As well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there were representatives from various civilian organizations who shared their ideas these were: CLAEH, RENeA, Cotidiano Mujer and ANONG. Regarding the government sector, we listened to the Ministry of Social Development and to Ms Bertha Sanseverin, Deputy.... Participation... participation participation and action were subjects which prevailed at the gathering. Hand-in-hand with Processes which have already taken place, seeking to keep a record of what s been successful within the local scene. Additionally, having Proposals in order to take the initiative and declare the will to be part of what will be built, as the future unfolds.

6 6 Participation and Humanity - in order to understand development and growth, not merely as a financial/numerical growth but as one which includes rights, quality of life and integration. We invite you to continue joining forces with ideas and initiatives regarding new Development Goals, especially in their implementation and enforcement. We appreciate the participation and generosity of the speakers who did so in a committed, provocative and constructive manner, as well as the listening and sharing on behalf of the audience. There can be more of us, the challenge is to undertake the initiative and organize our agendas. Beyond 2015 campaign coordination - ANONG

7 7 LITURGICAL SYMBOLS.- (IX) BELLS Their use in Christian churches seems to have started about years ago. It is said that they came from the East, and the remotest written mention dates from the VI century (A.C.). Saint Gregory of Tours ( ) in his "History of the Francs" confirms the use in Gaul, from which it spread to Ireland, Scotland (Celtic Christianity) during the VI century, then to England (VII century) and from the VIII century the use was common throughout Christendom. From that time till our days, in different Churches, including Anglicanism, there exists a special ritual for the consecration of bells, officiated by the Bishop, and using Holy Water and Holy Oils. He also says six prayers, each remembering a special function of the bell and asking God "to bless, hallow and sanctify it with thy heavenly benediction". The ceremony ended with an old and long hymn (10 stanzas) no longer sung, which began: " Lift it gently to the steeple, let our bell be set on high; there fulfill its daily mission, midway 'twixt the earth and sky"... Bells were rung at special moments in the community (happy or sad ones). In England I saw an old bell, with the latin inscription: "vivos voco, mortuos plango, fulgura frango" (i.e.: "l convoke the living, cry for the dead, and overcome the thunderbolt"). The functions of bells were: 1) to call believers for religious offices; 2) to announce the Consecration of elements during the Eucharist; 3) The call to pray for the moments of the "Ângelus" (at 9,00, 12,00 and 17,00) and of the "De Profundis" (around 20,00 hours); 4) Peeling at weddings, processions and civic occassions; 5) In funerals; 6) In the inductions of a new Parish Priest; 7) In the old times: in moments of great danger or public commotion.

8 8 In my last Parish in Porto Alegre (South of Brazil) there were bells, which were rung before and after the mass, at weddings and funerals, and sometimes in rivalry with those of the nearby Roman Parish. Bells' voices vary from treble to tenor; their size from the tiniest handbells to the big ones; their weight from grams to tons (The Big Bell of St. Paul's Cathedral at London weighs 18 tons and that of Köln, in Germany, weighs 27 tons The Anglican Cathedrals, at Buenos Aires and Montevideo, don't have bells, and that s a pity, but our parishes of St. Peter and St. Paul, in Progreso, and Holy Spirit, in Malvin have a bell which is rung before and after the Sunday Eucharist. In my recent travels to Quebec (Canada), I had the chance to hear the bells being rung in a peculiar way, called "change-ringing" (or "changement de sonnerie"). It is peculiar because in it, there's no attempt to produce a conventional melody (like in a carrillon). The ring of bells for "change-ringing" consists of a few large bells (8 in Quebec, from 850 to 300 kgs.), rigged to swing freely, each controlled by its own rope and with its own ringer. The set of bells is comparatively unwieldy, hence the emergence of permutations rather than melody as the organizing principle. Usually the ringers (in Quebec there were 8, plus the "Captain") ring the bells for an hour. People ca n see them in action, looking through a window in the front of the Cathedral. (Holy Trinity Cathedral, by the way, from 1804). The sound of bells, for which some people are nostalgic, have a voice whose intention is to take the human being out of his confinement and lead him to the heights of God, to a life of fulness. Bells are also messengers of Christ's invitation to gather with Him, to listen to his Word, to feed our souls and bodies with the bread and wine of His body and blood, to receive His life... Fr. 11 11 WE PRAY & GIVE THANKS FOR The Anglican Church of Uruguay and our mission to be God s instrument in the midst of our society; our clergy and their families and the workers at each Project and their families. We pray for our upcoming annual Synod. That God will give us a sense of the next steps on our journey towards maturity. For each person who draws near to a Parish / Mission / Project May we be open to welcome every one of them For the sick, the lonely, homeless, those who haven t sufficient food We also pray for those who are unemployed, those going through transitions, and those facing difficult decisions....
