1 urgent needs faith works Dear Friends, Pope Francis said not too long ago, I see clearly that the thing the church needs most today is the ability to heal wounds and to warm the hearts of the faithful... I see the church as a field hospital after battle. At Catholic Charities we have a foot in two worlds. One is the battle and one is the aftermath. One world is the day to day survival services that we provide to so many thousands of men, women and children each year. The other world is that of stabilization and self-sufficiency. Once we interact with somebody who needs an immediate, get me through today service, we start to ask the question, What can we do to make you more stable beyond today? How can we help you take care of yourself and not need this service again tomorrow? In order to make a dent in inter-generational poverty, we must have a foot in both worlds. We are the field hospital, yes, and we are the folks trying to negotiate the peace that will stop the war. This time of year, we are reminded of our place in both worlds. The weather is colder, and we are ramping up at the House of Charity for more activity and for 24/7 services. All of our programs are scrambling to get clients served with a new urgency as the first hint of winter is in the air. At the same time, we are building more housing and more services that connect people to mental health and addiction services that will keep them out of the cycle of crisis-level poverty to begin with. Immediate actions sprint each day along-side long-term preparations all surrounded by the ever-changing circumstances that affect our clients, our organization, our world. Each year in the fall we prepare for our annual Bishop s Brunch at the House of Charity. We invite every parishioner to join us after Sunday Mass every community supporter with a compassionate heart - to bring their families for a kid-friendly meal and a tour of the House of Charity. For a few hours once a year, we ask clients to give us the building to allow us to provide insight to the world of our homeless brothers and sisters. 2 Preparations for new housing construction on Second Avenue in Spokane Sisters of the Holy Names Convent in Spokane to convert to Rising Strong HOC prepares for 24/7 operations We are also preparing for the annual Catholic Charities Christmas Collection. The funds we raise are absolutely critical to our ability to serve those who are homeless, hungry and vulnerable. During this season we always look forward to visiting parishes and spreading the important news of the work we do. We will soon take ownership of the Sisters of the Holy Names Convent in Spokane in order to open Rising Strong, a new program for 2017, that will allow families to stay together and live in our care rather than losing their kids to CPS. We will continue to prepare. And we will continue to make meals for the hungry and give beds to the homeless every single day. We will hand out diapers and wipes and utility assistance and vouchers for the furniture bank every single day. We will rake leaves and mow lawns for seniors; we will provide childcare and immigration services and mental health counseling every single day. Our feet are in two worlds worlds our Pope wants us to be in. But we are firmly reminded that our feet our planted in these two worlds on the shoulders of greatness our parishioners, our supporters, our volunteers. Thanks to all of you for letting us stand on your firm ground! Dear Friends, On Sunday, October 23, we will host our 31 st annual Bishop s Brunch at the House of Charity! The event will include a delicious brunch and tours of the House of Charity and Fr. Bach Haven. Additionally, the Myrtle Woldson Institute, across the street from HOC and home to Diversion, Rapid Re-Housing and Food for All, will be open for interested guests to see. Every day, in so many ways, hope is given and lives are transformed on this stretch of Pacific Avenue in Spokane. We are honored to be able to say that the House of Charity and neighboring Catholic Charities facilities play an essential role in the Spokane community, offering critical services for homeless men and women. Our supporters make it all possible. As is tradition, the proceeds from the brunch will benefit the Sleeping Program. Your support is a great gift to those who would literally be left out in the cold without this important program. Thank you! 3 Photos by Simply Patrice Over 300 supporters attended the 20th anniversary Caring for Kids Luncheon benefiting St. Anne s Children and Family Center and Morning Star Boys Ranch. What an inspiring celebration! We took a look back at the decades of service these programs have provided in our community and were moved by the words of author Mary LoVerde who challenged us to Stay Connected to What s Really Important. Each year, this event feels like a reunion with guests greeting one and other with huge smiles and warm hugs. Thank you to our sponsors and to everyone who attended this year or in years past. 4 goodnews Did you know that in 2015 the Knights of Columbus set new all-time records in charitable monetary giving and service hours provided? Indeed, they are men of faith and men of action giving to countless local, national, and international projects. It is hard to imagine what Catholic Charities Spokane would do without our local Knights! Gifts of prayer, time, talent, and treasure continually come to our programs from the Assemblies/Councils across our Diocese. This summer, The Knights from St. Joseph s Colbert provided two very special contributions. First, with proceeds from their performance of Once Upon A Mattress, they were able to provide 66 beds and bedding for apartments at St. Michael the Archangel Haven in Walla Walla which opened in May and offers housing to formally homeless veterans. This endeavor was recognized by the Fourth Degree as one of the three To Be a Patriot award winners for This is an international award Congratulations! The Knights also coordinated and hosted the 2nd Harvest Mobile Food Bank at the House of Charity on August 30th. Boxes of delicious, fresh food were provided to hundreds of local residents. Thank you Knights for your ongoing and amazing support of our mission! SEE MORE ONLINE AT: WE K STUDENT VOLUNTEERS GOING BEYOND THE BOOKS... 6 A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY c roatia THINGS you won t want to miss in Croatia Join the Catholic Charities Foundation for a memorable and spiritual journey through Croatia, March 25th through April 2nd, Croatia, Slovenia, and the Adriatic and Dalmatian Coasts have long been considered one of the most beautiful, yet undiscovered and untraveled regions of the world. There are many sites and experiences you will see on this all-inclusive 12-day trip. Here is a preview of two: 1 Visit and tour Old Dubrovnik. This ancient city is a collection of culture, language, art, and architecture that will satisfy your heart, soul, and mind. And, its delicious Mediterranean cuisine will feed your hunger, too. 2 Every traveler s bucket list should include a visit to Plitvice Lakes National Park Its majestic 16 terraced lakes, waterfalls and dense forests are sights to behold. The cruise through this masterpiece will never be forgotten. For more information please visit CatholicCharitiesSpokane.org or contact us at (509) or croatia2017@ccspokane.org #NoWhiteFlags On September 13th, Dan Garske, Ray Hattenburg and Dave Martin (members of the Gleason Classic board) presented a $45,000 check from Gleason Initiative Foundation to Rob McCann and Bishop Skylstad. The proceeds come from another successful Gleason Classic Golf Tournament held on August 2, With these monies, Catholic Charities will be able to assist individuals and families who are suffering the effects of ALS or other neuromuscular diseases. This might mean providing utility assistance, caretaker services, mobility devices, or projects to improve life at home. We are blessed to be beneficiaries of such a worthy cause and blessed to be inspired by Steve and his Team Gleason every day!
